Opis - The fourth volume in Stefano Molardi"s authoritative collection of J.S. Bach"s organ works, this four-CD release brings together some of the German composer"s most famous music. Chief among these is the Toccata and Fugue in D minor BWV565; with its unforgettable opening bars " doubled in the octave " flourished chromaticism, pauses and arpeggios on the diminished seventh, the piece has consistently drawn much critical attention. Some scholars have debated whether it was originally written for the violin, thanks to its astonishing virtuosity and use of parallel thirds and sixths, and others have questioned whether the composition was even penned by Bach himself. Also included on this release are the "Neumeister" chorales; assembled by Johann Gottfried Neumeister in the 18th century, the collection wasn"t actually published until the 1980s, with the result that these little-recorded preludes still have plenty of room for a new interpretation. August Gottfried Ritter (1811-1885) is no household name, but to organists he one of the most significant figures in the history of their instrument; while his three-volume method of playing Kunst des Orgelspiels becoming a source of reference in Germany and elsewhere, his Geschichte des Orgelspiels compendium established his renown through bringing to light composers from the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, some of whom had already been forgotten by the time it was published in 1884. Today he is regarded as the founder of the modern German organ school.Placing a selection of rare works alongside his more famous organ music, this collection forms a unique tribute to the German composer?s genius. The four Organ Sonatas are first to be presented, pieces which are all cyclical in nature, with Op.23 forming his largest composition for organ, a work of vast proportions that was dedicated to Liszt and which includes Ritter?s debut use of organ toccata form. The second theme of Op.11 recalls the Adagio from the Toccata BWV564, a possible tribute to Bach whose music Ritter studied from an early age, and this baroque influence is expanded on in the second disc, in which the Toccata in D minor?s use of the stylus phantasticus, the Fugue in C minor?s treatment of J.S. Opis - Recorded earlier this year, here"s a small but distinguished volume in the growing Brilliant Classics organ library. The songs and chamber music of Tarquinio Merula (1595-1665) now place him in estimation as one of the most vital and original figures of North Italian musical life after Claudio Monteverdi, but too little attention has been paid to his organ music, which has had only one or two comprehensive recordings " though when one hears the Capriccio Cromatico, it"s easy to hear why Gustav Leonhardt and others might pick it out to illustrate the most inventive and challenging works of 16th-century organ music from whatever country. Indeed the piece, and several others like it here, sounds as though it could have been composed yesterday. The juxtaposition of keys is always striking, the movement between them unexpected and yet keenly plotted: Merula leaves the outright bizarre to Gesualdo. As the organist Enrico Viccardi remarks in his helpfully contextual booklet notes, "it is the keyboard compositions that clearly reveal his originality and his readiness to experiment". He highlights Merula"s debt to Claudio Merulo, but also the reworked, more advanced nature of that debt in the magnificent Toccata on the Second Tone. Viccardi has used an original 1647 organ, built by Giovanni Chiappani in the church of San Pietro Apostolo, Mezzana Casati and restored sympathetically in the 19th and 20th centuries. The temperament is uneven but not eccentrically so. This is a release that should receive wide attention in the organ press but also be of interest to anyone who is captivated by the music of Monteverdi and his time. Tarquinio Merula (1595-1665) was a foremost member of the Venetian School, active as a composer of a substantial vocal oeuvre and instrumental music for keyboard. This new recording contains the complete works for organ by Merula, consisting of Toccatas, Canzones, Capriccio and three Intonazione Cromatica. Keywords of Merula"s innovative style are chromatiscm and a great expressive intensity. Sandro Ivo Bartoli has shown himself a fine champion of early 20th-century piano music, especially from his home country. His previous disc was of arrangements of Liszt by that formidable polymath Ferruccio Busoni; his next issue for Brilliant Classics will be of Busoni's monumental testament to the fugue, the Fantasia Contrappuntistica. Here he tackles slightly lighter repertoire, less well-known but of considerable interest to the ever-growing audience for Romantic rarities.The combination of piano and orchestra might seem ideally suited to the style(s) of Ottorino Respighi, offering as it does the generic possibilities for weighty declamation, broad melodies and attention-drawing virtuosity: all these qualities can be heard in abundance in his best works in for this medium, the Concerto in modo misolidio and the Toccata. Presented here for the first time as a coupling, both of Respighi's great works for piano and orchestra take inspiration from early music, as may be judged from their archaic titles. Pre-Baroque modes and forms, in which Respighi became something of an expert in the dawn of early-music scholarship, pepper these score with an exotic, yet historically conscientious flavour.The Concerto is grand in manner and generous in scale; the single-movement Toccata is much more driven, and indeed hectic at times. A student of Alessandro Scarlatti and Pasquini he held important posts as organist and composer in Florence and Rome. However he went to Spain to join the Jesuit Society from where he was sent to South America, where he settled in Cordoba (Argentina) as missionary and composer. " Zipoli wrote in the Italian keyboard style as a worthy successor of Frescobaldi, Scarlatti and Pasquini. He wrote for both organ and harpsichord, and both instruments are included in this new recording of his complete output for the keyboard. ? Played by Carlo Guandalino on a historical 1612 organ of Castelnuovo Scrivia, and by Laura Farabollini on a copy of a 17th century French Taskin harpsichord.
