Stopniowo coraz większy wpływ na jego twórczość wywierała muzyka jego ojczystych Węgier, co możemy usłyszeć w sonacie skrzypcowej E-mol. Austro-niemiecki chwyt na jego duszy zaczynał się rozluźniać. Bartók zaczął nosić tradycyjne węgierskie stroje i odmawiał mówienia w domu po niemiecku. Niedługo po ukończeniu sonaty skrzypcowej w 1903 r. udał się na wieś, gdzie zainteresował się węgierską muzyką i piosenką ludową. Jego badania, prowadzone wraz z innym kompozytorem, Zoltanem Kodalyem i poświęcone węgierskiej muzyce ludowej są wręcz legendarne, ale Bartók szukał inspiracji także poza granicami narodowymi, o czym świadczą ludowe motywy siedmiogrodzkie, rumuńskie i słowackie obecne w zawartych na tej płycie jego wczesnych utworach na fortepian i skrzypce.

The third instalment of this survey of Bela Bartók's output for violin offers the two violin sonatas and the two rhapsodies. The sonatas, masterpieces of immense complexity and difficulty, show Bartók from his most austere, uncompromising side, whereas the rhapsodies abound in tuneful melodies of a folk-like nature, brilliant and virtuosic.In the first half of the 20th century, Béla Bartók was one of the principal ambassadors of Hungarian music. He was influenced by the folk music of Eastern Europe and strove to break the confines of the traditions of Western Classical music, in order to create harmonies, rhythms and performance practices that were more relevant to his turbulent era.While the two sonatas differ in their relation to the Classical model, the influence of Eastern Europe can be heard in both: the arpeggios at the beginning of No.1 imitate the sound of the Hungarian cimbalom, and there is evidence of Hungarian folk music in its dance-like finale as well as in the hor lunga-style melody of the Romanian peasant music in No.2, which recurs several times throughout the piece. The two Rhapsodies similarly share the influence; the slow 'Lassú' movement of No.1, for example, uses an exotic Transylvanian melody followed by a much more cheerful 'Friss' movement. Exoticism returns in the 'Lassú' of No.2, combined with a hint of melancholy, which is counteracted by the riotous dance of the 'Friss' thanks to its improvisatory nature and use of six separate tunes.The disc features Antal Zalai, praised by Igor Oistrakh as 'an exceptional violinist who has a perfect technique, beautiful large tone, real musical finesse and maturity as well as a noble personality'. Joining him is József Balog, one of the most celebrated pianists of his generation and winner of the 2005 Annie Fischer Award. This wonderful two-disc set charts the progress of Dvořák?s relationship with the concerto form over the course of his career, from the tentative but beautifully peaceful Piano Concerto of his early days to the masterwork that is the Cello Concerto, widely considered the greatest of all concertos for the instrument. This evolution was accompanied by a range of musical and personal influences: the concertos interact with Dvořák?s other key pieces, such as his famous Slavonic Dances, showing snippets of his main musical preoccupations as well as his changing geographic location; and are testament to his important relationships with some of the star soloists of his day ? such as the violinist Joseph Joachim or the cellist Hanuš Wihan ? for whom he wrote most of the concertos.Alongside Dvořák?s most famous examples of the concerto form, we are also treated to less-known soloist-and-orchestra works, including the charming Romance in F minor and the dazzling Mazurek in E minor. How many works by Hindemith can you name? This is the question underpinning the opening note written by the artists on this release, as it would appear that this composer ? undoubtedly one of the 20th century?s most famous ? in fact wrote ?the least famous music of the 20th century?. Jill and Eliot Lawson have therefore taken it upon themselves to try and go a little way towards changing this premise; through presenting the complete sonatas for violin and piano of Paul Hindemith, they hope to reveal the ?magic? of one of music history?s most original voices.The first half of the release is dedicated to the sonatas Op.11, works that were devised as early as 1917 ? by which time Hindemith, first and foremost a violinist, was already a master of his instrument. While No.1 is largely atonal and bears the influences of Debussy (one of the composer?s greatest idols at the time), No.2 has vaster proportions and more obviously refers to the late German Romanticism of Reger, Strauss and Korngold. Fast-forward 15 years and we come to the final two sonatas ? works that reveal a unique blend combining years of experimentation and artistic development with elegance, confidence and ease. Premiered in 1936, the Sonata in E major was composed during a time of great personal duress following the Nazis? attack of the composer in the press. It marks the first in a series in which Hindemith set out to write a sonata for every instrument; the C major sonata, dating from the composer?s exile in Switzerland, also features in what amounts to a 26-strong collection of veritable instrumental portraits.Both leading instrumentalists in their respective fields, brother-and-sister duo Eliot (violin) and Jill (piano) Lawson give consummate performances.
