Robert Schumann is probably best known for his copious amount of piano works and lieder ? music that, fuelled by vivid imaginings and unfettered emotions, represents one of the highest expressions of the Romantic spirit. It shouldn?t be forgotten, however, that the composer also wrote masterly works for the organ, an instrument which interested him only occasionally but which he praised in his Rules for House and Life (1850): ?If you pass near a church and you hear the organ playing, go inside and listen? Never waste an opportunity to practise the organ: there is no other instrument able so swiftly to dispense with all that is impure and imprecise, both in the music itself and in the manner of playing it.?It was Schumann?s deep admiration for J.S. Bach that led him to a detailed study of counterpoint ? one which, together with his encounter with the Pedalflügel (a piano with a pedalboard), led him to compose the three groups of works comprising this release. Given that the pedal piano is now all but obsolete, the conventional organ suffices more than adequately for this type of repertoire, and the Mascioni Organ of Pontevico ? inaugurated in 2009 and combining traditional elements with innovative design concepts ? is a particularly fine specimen on which to play it. The father of Felix and Fanny Mendelssohn eagerly facilitated their artistic upbringing. Felix's musical career took off from a young age and he was dubbed by Robert Schumann as 'the Mozart of the 19th century', while his similarly talented older sister was expected to keep music only as a hobby. This did not stop her from composing many pieces for playing in the home, some of which were later published under Felix's name. She is considered the most important female composer of the era.This collection brings together the Piano Trios of the siblings. Felix's unusually scored Trio for piano, violin and viola in C minor was written when he was just ten years old; beginning with a Baroque-style theme, its elfin motif, as featured later, is a clear pre-cursor to the music of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Louise Farrenc was a woman in a man?s world: 19th-century musical Paris. Clara Schumann had previously been the only woman to be praised for her compositions and performances; it was generally considered that to earn money from music was a masculine pursuit. Farrenc not only achieved the near impossible of getting her music published, leading to Robert Schumann?s praise of her work, but was awarded a piano professorship at the Paris Conservatoire. Compositions for piano formed a part of her oeuvre, alongside works for chamber ensemble and orchestra. These pieces gradually fell out of the repertoire and only began to be revisited towards the end of the 20th century.This special collection brings together Farrenc?s two piano quintets, both scored for the slightly unusual forces of piano, violin, viola, cello and double bass. The works, both of which owe much to the inspiration of Hummel and Mendelssohn, provide a pleasing contrast to each other ? the first being in the solemn key of A minor and the second in the sunnier E major.
