Francesca Caccini was certainly an exceptional woman. Not only was she a 'diva' of the Baroque world who had the voice 'of a nightingale', but she was also a lutenist, poet, and the first ever female to compose a full-scale opera (La liberazione di Ruggiero). She first rose to fame at just thirteen years old when she performed in scenes of Peri's Euridice to widespread acclaim, earning the nickname 'La Cecchina' (Little Francesca) by which she would be known for the rest of her life.The songs in this collection would more than likely have been performed by La Cecchina herself at the Medici court, where she was employed as a musician, and many are representative of her florid style of composition; Caccini was known to be meticulous in the notation of her works, ensuring that each emphasis, syllable and melisma fell in exactly the right place. Fluid melisma and ornamentation are indeed characteristics of the works O vive rose, Non so se quel sorriso and Ch'Amor sia nudo, with those of the latter offset by lilting dance rhythms in the accompaniment. Anyone who has attended law school knows that it invokes an important intellectual transformation, frequently referred to as "learning to think like a lawyer". This process, which forces students to think and talk in radically new and toward different ways about conflicts, is directed by professors in the course of their lectures and examinations, and conducted via spoken and written language. Beth Mertz's book is the first study to truly delve into that language to reveal the complexities of how this process takes place. Only a decade after its first performance, and Martha has already been performed as far afield as Algiers, San Francisco and Sydney.The seed of the opera can be found in the pastiche ballet Lady Harriette, whose Act 1 Flotow was commissioned by the Paris Opéra to write in 1844. Set in Richmond, England, during the reign of Queen Anne, the plot centres around Lady Harriet Durham who, tired of court life, decides to have some fun by visiting the local fair with her foppish cousin Lord Tristan and maid Nancy. Disguised as servant girls, both she and Nancy hire themselves off to the rich farmer Plumkett and his foster brother Lyonel (whose origins are unknown, the only vestige being a ring which his father left him and which he should present to the queen if ever he is in danger) -- only to be wooed by the two men, who have each fallen for the maid and her lady respectively. When the next day Queen Anne is out hunting with Lady Harriet and her court, a chance encounter with Lyonel sees him make claim to his 'maid', and he is subsequently arrested, having been declared insane by Harriet and Lord Tristan. But when his ring is brought to the queen, Harriet is told that he is in fact the son of the unjustly banished Early of Derby, and she rushes back to the farm to relay the news and to ask for Lyonel's hand in marriage. Lyonel at first angrily rejects her, but a replica of Richmond Fair sees the initial encounter between the four characters renewed, giving rise to jubilant celebrations.Made in Berlin in 1944 while Germany was still in a state of 'total war', this recording remains one of the most acclaimed interpretations of the opera. This performance, recorded live at the La Scala opera house in Milan on February 13, 1968, is the only recording of this opera ever issued with complete libretto at mid-price. Alfredo Catalani (1854?1893) was long ignored internationally among the numerous Italian opera composers of the late nineteenth century. In recent years Catalani has become more familiar with a revival of interest in his masterpiece, La Wally, one aria from which has always had currency and which achieved even wider fame in recent years from its use in films and commercials. This has led to further explorations, including a revival of Catalani?s nextbest stage work, Loreley, the first of his operas to attract attention outside of Italy. Like La Wally, Loreley has always had one excerpt which has kept the opera?s title in circulation, the atmospheric ?Dance of the Ondine? (also known as ?Dance of the Water Spirits?) from Act III, occasionally heard in concert programs and on recordings of light Romantic orchestral music. Greek soprano Elena Suliotis was a musical ?comet? whose first appearances in the late 1960s caused considerable critical excitement? a voice, the New York Times said, with ?the potential for greatness.? After a short career, Suliotis developed vocal problems and her career was truncated. This is one of the rare recordings preserving that short period of vocal splendor that has become a modern legend.?This 1968 performance certainly makes a strong case for the opera, with a fine cast and conductor, pulling out all the stops ? there is much here to admire and enjoy ?
