Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... "This is Courtney Summers doing what she does better than anybody-revealing truths beneath the surface of what we think we know. I'm the Girl captures the glittering allure of beauty as power and the insatiable need of the powerful to possess beautiful things."-Angeline Boulley, #1 New York Times bestselling and Printz Award-winning author of Firekeeper's Daughter"Scorchingly smart and on point, Courtney Summers' latest novel advances her even more fearlessly into the conversation about female autonomy, sexuality, and the damage wrought when young women try to win in a system rigged against them. Taut, unfiltered and unapologetically emotional, I'm the Girl digs in its nails and doesn't let go."-Paula McLain, author of When the Stars Go Dark and The Paris WifeA searing, suspenseful and groundbreaking new queer young adult novel from New York Times bestselling and Edgar-award Winning author Courtney Summers When sixteen-year-old Georgia Avis discovers the dead body of thirteen-year-old Ashley James, she teams up with Ashley's older sister, Nora, to find and bring the killer to justice before he strikes again. But their investigation throws Georgia into a world of unimaginable privilege and wealth, without conscience or consequence, and as Ashley's killer closes in, Georgia will discover when money, power and beauty rule, it might not be a matter of who is guilty-but who is guiltiest.A spiritual successor to the breakout hit Sadie, I'm the Girl is a masterfully written, bold, and unflinching account of how one young woman feels in her body as she struggles to navigate a deadly and predatory power structure while asking readers one question: if this is the way the world is, do you accept it?

Letter from America Penguin

Powieści i opowiadania

When Alistair Cooke retired in March 2004 and then died a few weeks later, he was acclaimed by many as one of the greatest broadcasters of all time. His Letters from America, which began in 1946 and continued uninterrupted every week until early 2004, kept the world in touch with what was happening in Cooke's wry, liberal and humane style. This selection, made largely by Cooke himself and supplemented by his literary executor, gives us the very best of these legendary broadcasts. Over half have never appeared in print before. It is a remarkable portrait of a continent - and a man. Fred Astaire 26 June 1987 Movie stars don't make it. Nor statesmen. Not Prime Ministers, or dictators unless they die in office. Not even a world-famous rock star, unless he's assassinated. But last Monday, none of the three national television networks hesitated about the story that would lead the evening news. On millions of little screens in this country and I don't doubt in many other countries around the world, the first shots were of an imp, a graceful wraith, a firefly in impeccable white tie and tails. And for much longer than the lead story usually runs, for a full five minutes on NBC, we were given a loving retrospective of the dead man, ending with the firm declaration by Nureyev that 'He was not just the best ballroom dancer, or tap dancer, he was simply the greatest, most imaginative, dancer of our time.' And the newsmen were right to remind us of the immortal comment of the Hollywood mogul, who, with the no-nonsense directness of an expert, reported on Fred Astaire's first film test: 'Has enormous ears, can't act, can't sing, dances a little.' That Hollywood mogul, long gone, spent his life ducking round corners, to avoid being identified as the oaf who looked in the sky and never saw the brightest star. However, that expert opinion was, as the lawyers say, controlling at the time and in Astaire's first movies, there was no thought of allowing him to act or sing. But not for long. And thanks to the invention of television, and the need to fill vast stretches of the afternoon and night with old movies, it has been possible for my daughter, for instance, to claim Fred Astaire as her favourite film star from the evidence of all the movies he made fifteen, ten, five, three years before she was born. When I got the news on Monday evening here, and realized with immediate professional satisfaction that the BBC had smartly on hand a musical obituary tribute to him I put together eight years ago, I couldn't help recalling the casual, comic way this and similar radio obituaries came about. I was in London at the end of 1979, and Richard Rodgers - one of the two or three greatest of American songwriters - had just died, I believe on New Year's Eve or the night before. Britons, by then, were getting accustomed, without pain, to making what used to be a two-day Christmas holiday into a ten-day much-needed rest. For all laborious research purposes, the BBC was shut up. And there was no retrospective programme on the life and music of Richard Rodgers in the BBC's archives. Of course, in a gramophone library that looks like an annex to the Pentagon, there were hundreds, perhaps thousands, of recordings of his songs. The SOS went out to a writer, a producer, and - I presume - a man who had the key to the gramophone library. The silent place was unlocked, and the three of them laboured through the day to put together an hour's tribute to Richard Rodgers. It was done. It was competent enough, but rushed to an impossible deadline. This hasty improvisation happened just when my own music producer and I, who had enjoyed working together for six years or so on American popular music, were wondering what we could offer next. We'd done a sketch history of jazz, through individuals. We'd gone through all the popular music of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, and were stumped for a new series, at which point I asked if we mightn't go and talk to the head of the channel, network or whatever. We went in, and the genial boss asked me what we had in mind. 'A morgue,' I said. A what? 'Where', I asked, 'is your morgue?' He was not familiar with the word, a newspaper term. 'Well,' I said, 'all newspapers have them.' 'How d'you mean?' 'If, I explained, 'Mrs Thatcher died tonight and you woke up and read a two-sentence obituary, you'd be rightly outraged. But if you saw a two-page obituary, you'd take it for granted. When d'you suppose it was written?' 'That's right,' he said thoughtfully. What I was proposing was a morgue of the Americans eminent in popular music and jazz, so they'd not get caught short again. A splendid idea, the man said; pick your stars. We made a list and were commissioned to return to America and finish all of them. Naturally, we looked at a calendar, and birthdates of Hoagy Carmichael, Earl Hines, Harold Arlen, Ethel Merman, Stephane Grappelli, Ella Fitzgerald. But then, in a spasm of panic, we thought of two giants - if the word can be used about two comparative midgets: Irving Berlin and Fred Astaire. Berlin was then 91. And Fred Astaire was just crowding 80. The boss man, to whom the idea of a morgue had been, only a few minutes before, quaint if not morbid, wondered what we were waiting for. Better get busy, at once, on Berlin and then on Astaire. I remember doing the Astaire obit, then and there, while I was still in London. Meanwhile, we'd simply pray every night that the Lord would keep Irving Berlin breathing till I could get home and get busy. I remember being picked up in a car by a charming young girl to get to the BBC and record my Astaire narration - there wasn't a moment to lose. She asked me, in the car, what the script was that I was clutching. 'It's an obituary', I said, 'of Fred Astaire.' 'Fred Astaire,' she shrieked, 'dead?' and almost swerved into a bus. 'Of course, he's not dead,' I said, 'but he's going to be one day.' She, too, was new to the institution of a morgue. I recalled that when I was a correspondent for a British paper in the United States, and when for example. Dean Acheson was appointed Secretary of State, the first cable I had from my editor said, 'Welcome Acheson obituary soonest.' How ghoulish, she said. I imagine that to two generations at least, it's assumed that Fred Astaire, this slim, pop-eyed newcomer to Hollywood who couldn't act, couldn't sing, danced a little, only made a fool of the mogul through the movies he made, with Ginger Rogers, in the mid- and late 1930s. But long before then, from the mid-1920s on, he was already an incomparable star - as a dancer - to theatre audiences both in New York and in London. Perhaps more in London than anywhere, certainly in the 1920s, with the early Gershwin hits, Funny Face and Lady Be Good, and lastly, in 1933, in Cole Porter's Gay Divorce (which was the title of the theatre show; Hollywood would not then allow so shocking a title and called the movie version, The Gay Divorcee). Of all the thousands of words that have been written this week, and will be written, there is a passage I went back to on Tuesday night which, I think, as well as anything I know, sums up Astaire's overall appeal - the appeal that takes in but transcends one's admiration for his dancing and for his inimitably intimate singing style. This was written in November 1933, by a theatre critic who had so little feel for dancing that he marvelled why London should go on about 'Mr Astaire's doing well enough what the Tiller Girls at Blackpool do superbly'. The critic, the writer, was James Agate, the irascible, dogmatic, opinionated but brilliant journalist, and I believe the best critic of acting we have had this century. He is writing his review of Gay Divorce, after declaring yet again his contempt for musical comedy as an entertainment for idiots, deploring the play's plot and the acting and hoping 'Micawberishly, for something to turn up'. 'Presently,' he wrote, 'Mr Fred Astaire obliged, and there is really no more to be said.' Except

Sock Knitting Master Class Interweave Press Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Finalist in the About.com Reader's Choice Awards for Best Knitting Book of 2011. "Budd's latest book is a trove of expertise, with patterns from 15 of the craftiest sockistas around, no surnames necessary...Every project adheres to the holy trinity of custom sock knitting--fit, comfort, aesthetics. And if you can't get enough of this collected wisdom in words alone, a 95-minute sock tutorial by Budd is included on an accompanying DVD." - Cheryl Krementz, Yarn Market News "Ann Budd is at it again. She's pulled together another great collection of patterns, this time from master sock designers. There are 17 sock designs, and there isn't one I wouldn't love to wear." - Cindy Koepke, Knitcircus "It seems like just about all the big names in knitting -- particularly sock knitting -- are featured in Ann Budd's excellent new book Sock Knitting Master Class...In addition to the fantastic patterns, which offer a wide variety of options for both toe-up and top-down knitters (and even one sock that goes both directions!), an introductory section covers just about all you'd ever need to know about some of the design choices that go into making a sock." - About.com Guide to Knitting "If the designers aren't enough to draw you in, there's much more in here for sock novices and sock aficionados alike. With topics like sock design, toe up and top down construction, and the best bind offs for toe-up socks, this book will take you from zero to sock in no time." - KnitPurl yarn shop (Portland, OR) "This book is a really valuable collection of patterns and techniques that any sock knitter will use again and again." - Jenny, KnitPicks.com "I'm really glad to have this book because it has so many patterns, from lace to cable to colorwork, and the socks are all beautiful. Also, the techniques have plenty of charts, diagrams and photographs to make learning easy." - Pamela MacKenzie, MyCentralJersey.com "The facts alone will make you want this book: 15 of the knitting world's best sock designers, 18 sock designs, Ann Budd talking basic how-tos and design tips and Clara Parkes talking sock yarn, and a 95 minute DVD. All of the technique and yarn information is so well organized and thought out that a knitter could read the book and not knit a single sock and still come away having learned a lot about sock knitting." - Knitty.com "...the patterns! Beautiful, yet functional stitch designs and fun colors." - CraftGossip.com Knitting Editor "It's not often that I scoop a book from the top of the review pile and take it home with me, and it's even less common for me to sit down and read it right away. But with sock knitting on my mind, I was intrigued, so last night I sat down to peruse this over a cup of tea. I was absolutely delighted to see that the first chapter of the book is devoted to explaining the whys and wherefores of sock construction. Top-down or toe-up? She's got it covered. Heel flap, short row or afterthought heel? Ditto. Want to choose from a pointed toe, a spiral or star toe, or a toe band? She's got your back with that, too. This book seems like just the right foundation for someone who's ready to strike out on their own - even if the starting place is just switching out the heel or toe treatment for one that suits them better." - Austen Gilliland, craft editor, CanadianLiving.com "You think you already know everything there is to know about socks? After all, there are a multitude of sock books on the market these days, perfectly good books. You know everything. Except...do you really? Most (though not all) sock books I own are either filled with patterns with not a whole lot of time spent on technique, or they're full of guidance but with blah patterns. Of course, some do hit the balance between pattern and technique. Some are fairly exhaustive, in fact, and you may already have them on your shelves. But...they're not THIS book. First, this book is by Ann Budd, a genius in our time...Master Class is the right name!" - KnittingScholar.com "Some features I particularly like in the book: each pattern has a box listing the different techniques used in the pattern; an overview of different styles of creating parts of the sock, such as a few different heel types, toes, and cuff treatments; both top-down and toe-up construction techniques; a handy DVD in the back. If you are looking for some great new sock patterns or just looking to get started knitting socks, this book is sure to have what you need." - A Woolie Tale yarn shop "If you're a fan of socks and of learning more about how to put together socks successfully, this one is a must-read." - About.com Guide to Knitting

Dogs Are People Too- The Practical Guide to Understanding and Training Your Dog (because you're more alike than you think!) is a comprehensive guide for novice to experienced owners on how to best understand and interact with their dogs for utmost success.Professional ReviewsFinding a dog training book that is entertaining, yet not lightweight, is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack. With Dogs Are People Too, Mary Jean Alsina presents an extremely unique, science-based perspective about dogs and their owners. The tone of the book is conversational, charming, and thought-provoking with its unique perspective about the similarities between dogs and humans.- John ViscontiAlsina neatly draws on a variety of sources to outline how dog guardians can learn to better communicate with their dogs, read their emotions and understand what they are trying to say.- Susan Nilson I highly recommend that dog owners read Dogs Are People Too as it delivers an excellent overview of important concepts they need to be aware of. Dogs Are People Too acts as a comprehensive guide to canine guardianship, giving owners the information they need to enhance their bond with their dogs, and is a valuable foundation of dog owner education.- Angelica SteinkerI'd always suspected that my dogs were the better versions of me and now this book proves it. This is the bridge that helps you to relate to your dog as you would to your child, your friend, your partner. It applies what you know already to the language of dogs and you will find yourself nodding absently and consistently in agreement as you flip the pages. Don't think of this as a dog training manual. Rather, it is a guide for understanding dogs.- Zarina MakAbout the author - Mary Jean Alsina, CPDT-KA, PCT-A, M.A., is a certified professional science-based dog trainer with over 10 years' experience. During this time, she has worked with hundreds and hundreds of dogs exhibiting issues ranging from typical puppy behavior to severe fear and aggression as adults. Alsina is a former New Jersey public school teacher who taught instrumental music (band and strings) for 20 years. She also has an extensive knowledge of the human and canine learning process. "If you've ever thought, for even a moment, that you'd like to explore improvisational piecing techniques, then this is a must-have book for you. And, if you haven't thought about exploring improvisation, then this book is still for you. Why? Because it is so crammed full of eye-candy that you'll wonder why you haven't yet played with this process." - Malka Dubrawsky, author, Fresh Quilting "Jacquie and Katie are right up there as two of my favorite quilters and bloggers. This book is absolutely gorgeous, right down to how it feels in your hand (something I find weirdly important!)." - Ashley Newcomb, FilmintheFridge.com "What we really like about this book is this duo's deep respect for traditional quiltmaking and their oh-so-true advice to master the foundational techniques for making quilts in order to better manipulate them for your improvisational masterpieces." - Generation Q magazine "When it comes to modern quilting, I have a whole lotta opinions! I feel pretty strongly that it's a specifically definable aesthetic movement. I think that modern quilting is waaaay more about design than it is about using a specific a line of fabric or currently on trend color combos. And in my opinion, this book, is really and truly an example of modern quilting." - Alissa Haight Carlton, author, Modern Minimal and Block Party: The Modern Quilting Bee "Jacquie and Katie are two women who I so greatly admire and am in awe of. Both of them in their own way have sparked a flame in me like only a few others have." - Monica Solorio-Snow, TheHappyZombie.com "Page after page of gorgeous quilty goodness." - Rashida Coleman-Hale, author, I Love Patchwork and Zakka Style "It's fabulous! Thoughtful and approachable instructions for a variety of improvisationally-pieced quilt projects." - Elizabeth Hartmann, author Modern Patchwork and The Practical Guide to Patchwork "I really cannot recommend this book enough... for me it has hit a new standard as far as quilting books go." - Amber Carrillo, One Shabby Chick "These ladies know how to TEACH what they know. The extensive step-by-step diagrams are impressive. No detail left behind. Sometimes all the elements of a book come together in such a way that the end result is nothing short of spectacular." - Kathy Mack, Pink Chalk Studio "A book that is truly a work of art, that clearly speaks to the modern quilting community!" - Angela Waters, author, Free-Motion Quilting with Angela Walters "Refreshing and invigorating." - Rita Hodge, Red PepperQuilts.com "Amazing projects." - ewMamaSew.com "There's just the right, hard-to-find mix here. Enough support, tips, technique and design to give you confidence and skills, plus improvisational tools to give you freedom in your quilting approach." - SewMamaSew.com "One thing I've come across again and again when teaching others or just doing a casual sewing day, is that lots of people are (dare I say?) s.c.a.r.e.d or simply say they 'don't know how' to do improv. So if you've ever found yourself saying those words, this book would be a great addition to your sewing book library." - Penny Layman, Sew Take a Hike "So many beautiful ideas, packed into one gorgeous book." - Susan Beal, author, Modern Log Cabin Quilting "Jacquie and Katie talk the reader through innovative techniques that, to me, represent what the modern quilt movement is all about. If you've ever seen a quilt that has gorgeously crazy piecing that seems like it would be impossible to do, then this book can break it down for you and expose the mysteries behind it." - Blair Stocker, Wisecraft

The Diamond Dutch: Strategic Ideas Powerful Weapons

Szachy > Książki New In Chess

"The Dutch Defence is a diamond in the treasure box of modern chess openings.#8221;  -- Viktor Moskalenko The widely-played Dutch Defence is a sharp choice. Black does not try to preserve a positional balance, but chooses to fight it out.  No author is more qualified to explore new ideas in the Dutch than Viktor Moskalenko, a renowned champion of dynamic play. The Diamond Dutch  is not a repertoire book. Moskalenko himself plays this chess opening with both colours and covers the entire spectrum for White as well as Black: -- various Anti-Dutch weapons -- the Stonewall System -- the Classical System -- the Leningrad System. As Moskalenko thoroughly shakes up the lines of yet another chess opening, he keeps both the strategic principles and the tactical finesses firmly in sight.  He presents a host of novelties, daring recommendations, new resources and cunning tricks. As always he describes his ideas in his  inimitable style full of humour and enthusiasm, and illustrates them with plenty of his own games. Viktor Moskalenko  (1960) is an International Grandmaster and a well-known chess coach. The former Ukrainian champion has won many tournaments in Spain, his new home country. He is the author of The Fabulous Budapest Gambit (2007), The Flexible French (2008), Revolutionize Your Chess (2009), The Wonderful Winawer (2010) and The Perfect Pirc-Modern (2013). Glenn Flear, author of 'Starting Out: Open Games': "These days there is a tendency for books on the Dutch to touch only one system, here you have everything, and even with handy antidotes from White's point of view. There are plenty of themes and general strategy for more modest readers, as well as some cutting-edge theory which will challenge oppenents of all standards (..) Books by Viktor Moskalenko are always great fun. They are the perfect medicine if you suffer from opening preparation blues!(..) For anyone who comes into contact with the Dutch, a gem and a valuable one at that!" Dennis Monokroussos, ChessToday: "Moskalenko makes the book as user-friendly as possible, with little stories, highlighted tactics, transpositional subtleties and other helpful tidbits (..) A fascinating collection of analyses of the Dutch, and I can't imagine why any player using this opening would want to do without it." Marshtower Chess Reviews: "With a plethora of new ideas, sparkling games and delivered in very enthusiastic style, The Diamond Dutch is a significant addition to the literature on 1.d4 f5. It is entirely accessible to players from 'improving club player' standard upwards. Viktor Moskalenko is one of my favourite authors and I can happily recommend his latest book, which keeps up the very high standards of his previous volumes."  Martin Rieger, SchachWelt: "Moskalenko's explanations are understandable and convincing, his tips and recommendations show his great know-how and the reader always has the pleasant feeling that he is learning something new." Lukas Wedrychowski, DailyChess.org: "Those who have read Moskalenko before, know that he only writes about things he is a great expert in (..) This book will be of great value to many players." Uwe Bekemann, German Correspondence Chess Federation: "A very good basis for both Black and White to understand the ideas behind the Dutch Defence and learn and play many new lines." John D.Warth, Chess Club of Southern Indiana: "What makes this book compelling is the intensity of its cu tting-edge lines, but organized for maximum understanding and readability. Like a well-ordered mathematics text, shaded boxes enclose important points. Those boxes denote weapons, puzzles, traps, and chapter summaries for better clarity. Club and tournament players will enjoy the many illustrative games (..) An eminently enjoyable book." Elburg Chess Reviews: "Loaded with astounding ideas." John Hartmann Chess Book Reviews: "I do not think there is a better guide to the Dutch
