Opis - Whilst the name of Antonio Caldara is unfortunately somewhat of a rarity on the programmes of today"s recital halls and opera houses, the eminent English musician Charles Avison had no hesitation in describing the Italian as a composer "...whose works have been thoroughly proved and have stood the never failing test of time". Born in Venice in 1670, Caldara had a desirable musical education, not only being the son of a violinist but also gaining a place as a chorister at St Mark"s Basilica, where also he received instrumental tuition at the "cello and keyboard from the most illustrious Venetian musicians of the day. Whilst an abundance of insights into the composer are available to us through his many large-scale works for the stage, it is perhaps of significant interest that we see, through these sonatas, the original creative roots of the musician from Venice, composing these sonatas for his own instrument, the "cello. These are certainly treasures of the solo ?cello repertoire, holding a valued place amongst any collection of fine baroque chamber music, and we must furthermore hope that public recognition of this distinguished composer will grow in affection through these exquisite works. Opis - Even within Vivaldi"s vast treasure-store of concertos (555 and counting) there is very little music that features solo plucked instruments. Three of the works on this disc (two sonatas, and a D major concerto) were intended for the lute, while the fourth was for mandolin. When the revival of "early music" in the first half of the 20th century brought with it a re-discovery of Vivaldi"s music, there simply were no lute players, and it became traditional for these works to be adapted for guitar. The concerto in C has latterly gained wide popularity, at least in its original guise as a mandolin concerto; playing it on the guitar requires minimal rearrangement and introduces it to a broader listenership. More intimate than the concertos, the two sonatas are slightly odd in that, rather than being a dialogue between two equal soloists as one might expect, the violin and the guitar actually play the melodies together for much of the time, with the former sometimes sustaining longer notes while the latter plays arpeggiated patterns. Massimo Scattolin was a pupil of the great Segovía; composers such as Astor Piazzolla and Violet Archer have written concertos for him. Here he is accompanied by a chamber ensemble based in Vivaldi?s own city of Venice. Opis - It is fitting that the first repertoire chosen for this recording with Czech Philharmonic is music that has been central to the pianist for most of his life. Antonín Dvorˇák"s Piano Concerto in G minor is the least known of the composer"s three completed concertos. It was written during 1879 and was premiered in Prague in March 1878 by pianist Karel ze Slavkovsky, the orchestra being led by Adolf Cˇech. It has only been revisited infrequently by a handful of pianists since. In the autumn of 1989, when the communist regime finally gave way to democracy, and playwright Václav Havel became the head of state, Rudolf Firkušný finally agreed to return to Prague. On the 28th May, 1990, he performed the solo part in Bohuslav Martinu"s Piano Concerto no.2 at the Prague Spring festival with the Czech Philharmonic under the direction of Jirˇí Beˇlohlávek. It was an extraordinary confluence of events: pianist Firkušný returning to Prague after 44 years of exile, in order to perform a work he had premiered in Paris in 1935, the writer of which being an eminent Czech composer in the 100th year anniversary of his birth. On this newly compiled 2cd set we can now find Firkusny"s recordings of the Dvorak piano concerto as well as both the Dvorak piano quintets. A unique rerelease of a very important recording. Francesco Geminiani, a great violin virtuoso of his time, also enjoyed a fruitful career as a composer and teacher. He published the first of two keyboard collections, Pieces de Clavecin , in 1743. Born in 1639, Alessandro Stradella stands as one of the most productive and popular musicians of his generation ? a composer who enjoyed such a high reputation that he never lacked powerful patrons and commissions. Regarded by some as the Mozart of the 17th century, Stradella wrote most of his works for voices; this set documents Stradella?s other side. Twelve sonatas for violin and continuo, nine Sonatas for two violins and continuo, various other ?miscellaneous? compositions such as the Sonata ?for two choirs?, featuring two violins and two cornets (each with continuo); a joyful cornucopia of styles and instrumental combinations. Although there is little key contrast in each individual piece, variation of tempo and metre offer contrast between movements, and Stradella is deftly inventive in his use of figures based on adjacent notes. For all the density of their counterpoint, these sonatas revel in a continual readiness to push the boundaries of 17th-century conventions.Stradella?s instrumental works have long been viewed as incidental cut-offs ? products of necessity rather than compulsion.
