Opis - Until the last couple of decades, the art-music of Portugal was relatively little known outside its home country, but with releases dedicated to Jose Fernandes (1906-1983) (BC94746) and Antonio Fragoso (1897-1918) (BC94158), Brilliant Classics has been in the vanguard of those record labels who have introduced a vital musical culture on the edge of the European mainstream to an international audience. Both albums featured the Portuguese violinist Carlos Damas and his colleagues Jill Lawson and Jian Hong; they partner each other once again in music by Frederico de Freitas (1902-1980). A contemporary of Fernandes and Fragoso, de Freitas wrote in the same Romantic and then post-Romantic vein, somewhat removed from the upheavals of 20th-century musical culture that took place in the centre of Europe, writing charming and melodic music with a folkloric character after the manner of de Falla"s ballets. This recording, which surveys Freitas"s output for violin, includes two works that stand almost at opposite ends of his career: the Berceuse from 1922 and the Dança do Palhaço ("Dance of the Clown") from 1964. However, the Nocturne for violin and piano and Sonata for violin and cello, both composed in 1923, were perceived at the time as highly innovative and modern, especially on account of the use of bitonality and polyrhythms. His outstanding ability as a contrapuntist is is clearly evident in a work such as the Sonata, which is the most extensive work on the disc. The detailed booklet notes are written by the English scholar of Portuguese music (and much else) Ivan Moody, who is also a critic for Gramophone. Of the Fragoso album, Musicweb International noted that "the label's recordings are nowadays reliably among the best - this one is no different". Frederico de Freitas (1902-1980) was one of the most important musical figures of 20th century Portugal: a composer, conductor (founder of the Portuguese radio orchestra), writer, teacher and instrumentalist (piano, violin). His early compositions are inspired by the musical trends of the time (polyrhythms and polytonality), later he developed a more classical style, in which his own harmonic language (augmented modality) and the inspiration of his country"s rich folk music tradition are the most important elements. This CD contains De Freitas" complete works for violin and piano, music of a rich originality, worthy to discover and cherish. Portuguese violinist Carlos Damas is a strong advocate of this music: sensuous tone, intimacy and passion, perfectly suited to the music?s mood. Pianist Jill Lawson is an excellent partner, the duo having successfully recorded for Brilliant Classics already (Antonio Fragoso, works for violin and piano, BC 94158). Opis - Despite the fact that he came from a modest background, the composer and harpsichordist Jean-Henri d"Anglebert managed to carve out an impressive career for himself in 17th-century Paris, which culminated with his appointment as harpsichordist at the court of King Louis XIV. His musical style is characterised by a rich and expressive contrapuntal and harmonic language, as well as lavish ornamentation. The four Suites heard here constitute D"Anglebert"s Pieces de Clavecin, which represent one of the most significant musical achievements of the second half of the 17th century. It is the composer"s magnum opus, in which he took what he had learnt about the French school of composition and performance from his predecessor at Louis XIV"s court, the highly influential Jacques Champion de Chambonnieres, and enhanced it with his unique artistry. His sophisticated ornamentation was unprecedented at the time and posed a real challenge for performers. Other remarkable features of the Suites include striking examples of the Prélude non mesuré (written without rhythm or metre indications), solemn and meditative Gaillardes and Passacailles contrasted with lively Correnti and Gigues, and an intimate homage to Chambonnieres which closes the fourth Suite. The Lully transcriptions showcase D"Anglebert"s admiration for, and close affinity with, the composer " he played the harpsichord in many of the performances of Lully"s tragédies lyriques " and invest what was the widespread and sometimes commonplace practice of transcription with a much greater artistic value, using the harpsichord to suggest orchestral textures. D"Anglebert"s complete harpsichord works are performed by early music specialist Francesco Cera, who regularly appears with leading early music ensembles and has been acclaimed for his "great intelligence" and "impeccable interpretative command" (Amadeus). Other information: - Recorded in 2013 in Italy. - This important release present the complete music for harpsichord on 3 CD"s by Henri D"Anglebert. - D"Angelbert was a famous keyboard virtuoso and composer at the court of Louis the XIV, the Sun King. His style is typically French, expressed in a rich counterpoint and lavish ornamentation, a free and improvisatory style, in which sometimes the metre indications are missing ("non mesuré?) and a high level of virtuosity. - Francesco Cera is one of the foremost Italian cembalists, having recorded extensively for various labels, and is considered a specialist in the French repertoire. He plays a magnificent instrument, a copy after Tibaut 1691. - A valuable addition to the ever growing discography of Baroque keyboard masters on Brilliant Classics (Rameau, Couperin, Duphly, Buxtehude, Reincken, Böhm, Muffat, Gronau, Froberger and many more)! - Booklet includes liner notes and artist biographies. Ritter: Complete Organ Music Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

August Gottfried Ritter (1811-1885) is no household name, but to organists he one of the most significant figures in the history of their instrument; while his three-volume method of playing Kunst des Orgelspiels becoming a source of reference in Germany and elsewhere, his Geschichte des Orgelspiels compendium established his renown through bringing to light composers from the Renaissance and the Baroque periods, some of whom had already been forgotten by the time it was published in 1884. Today he is regarded as the founder of the modern German organ school.Placing a selection of rare works alongside his more famous organ music, this collection forms a unique tribute to the German composer?s genius. The four Organ Sonatas are first to be presented, pieces which are all cyclical in nature, with Op.23 forming his largest composition for organ, a work of vast proportions that was dedicated to Liszt and which includes Ritter?s debut use of organ toccata form. The second theme of Op.11 recalls the Adagio from the Toccata BWV564, a possible tribute to Bach whose music Ritter studied from an early age, and this baroque influence is expanded on in the second disc, in which the Toccata in D minor?s use of the stylus phantasticus, the Fugue in C minor?s treatment of J.S. Bach?s Fugue BWV546 and the Fugue in B ?after Handel? are just a few examples of the predilection for all things past that penetrated the Romantic period. The Sandri organ of the Santuario Maria Ausiliatrice in Aprica, Italy, was the instrument of choice for this recording, played with poise and authority by the Italian organist Massimo Gabba, a specialist of the Romantic repertoire. Having recorded several CDs for leading labels such as Tactus, Elegia and Brilliant Classics, Gabba?s performances have been widely acclaimed in the Italian and international press (Diapason, Organ Yearbook, Ars Organi etc.). He is currently Professor of Organ and Composition at the ?G. Tartini? Conservatory in Trieste.Other information:- Recorded September 2013, for the first time on CD: the complete organ works by Ritter!- August Gottfried Ritter lived from 1811-1885, a near contemporary of Liszt (1811-1886), and that is not the only connection: Ritter was one of the most significant organ composers of 19-th century Germany, and like Liszt in his organ works, was inspired by the great contrapuntists Bach and Handel. Some of his works are of substantial proportions, written in a 19-th century pendant of the ?Stylus Phantasticus?, full of imagination and theatrical musical gestures.- Organist Massimo Gabba chose for this recording the magnificent Sandri instrument of the Santuaria Maria Ausiliatrice in Aprica, Italy.- Gabba earlier recorded a superb ?Romantic Handel Transcriptions? for Brilliant Classics (BC 94709), and is considered one of Italy?s leading organists.- The booklet contains full specifications of the organ, liner notes and artist biography.

CLASSICAL OBOE CONCERTOS Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

There are about one hundred classical oboe concertos, most of which were composed by oboists hoping to promote appreciation of their own skills. Following in their footsteps, the Latvian oboist Andrius Puskunigis has compiled a recording of four concertos for oboe and oboe d?amore that represent the classic Viennese style. From around 1750, the oboe, an instrument hitherto largely used in chamber and church music, began to make its way into concert halls, and to be played by virtuoso soloists. The instrument?s construction was evolving to increase the penetration of its hi register, making it more suitable both as an orchestral and a concertante instrument. Even so, the oboe of Mozart?s day could still only play two keys, thus restricting its technical range of available music and expression. Mozart overcame those limitations most wholly successfully, as one might imagine, but none of the other works here is negligible. His friend Carl Ditters van Dittersdorf composed four concertos for the instrument and its close but obsolescent relative, the sweeter and gentler oboe d?amore, which is heard here in the A major concerto. The first and most exuberant of three concertos by Giuseppe Ferlendis (1755 - 1810) opens the recording with pleasant and undemanding, slightly Haydnesque sequences. Then comes a greater rarity, the C major concerto by Leopold Hofmann (1738 - 1793) of more archaically Baroque cut, owing a little of its dash and brio to the Italian concertos for the instrument such as those composed by Vivaldi. In true classical style, the cadenzas for each concerto were composed/improvised by Puskunigis, who also contributes booklet notes which give valuable context to the Classical-era oboe and discuss the particularities of each composer?s writing for the instrument. From around 1750 the oboe, an instrument hitherto largely used in chamber music and church music, began to make its way into the concert halls, and to be played by virtuoso soloists. The Oboe Concertos on this new recording represent the Classical Viennese Style, with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as its undisputed genius. Although the other composers, Ferlendis, Ditters von Dittersdorf and Hofmann are lesser known, their Oboe (or Oboe d?Amore) Concertos share the same grace, sparkle and melodious flow as Mozart?s masterwork.Andrius Puskunigis, Lithuanian, is first oboist of the Heidelberger Sinfoniker under Thomas Fey, and as such a specialist in Authentic performance Practice. His earlier recording for Brilliant Classics, the Bach Oboe Concertos (BC94991), won international praise for its stylistic purity, transparence and ?Spielfreude?.The St. Christopher Chamber Orchestra is one of the finest groups of Lithuania. They recorded over 20 CD?s, for BIS, Fleur du Son, Ambitus and other labels.

Mozart: Chamber Music Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

For many Mozart is more ?perfector? than ?innovator?, a composer who drew on an already extant vocabulary to create some of the greatest works in European culture. In this recording, however, we are introduced to Mozart the ?trailblazer?: the first composer in history to take wind instruments seriously. Whereas his colleagues were inclined to employ the so-called Harmonie merely to reinforce the general sonority, Mozart took it upon himself to exploit the character of each of these instruments, endowing them with a much more individualistic, distinctive role ? as soloists, in the orchestra or in chamber music, the subject of this engaging release.Such writing is evident in the Quartet for oboe and strings, a work of wide leaps and brilliant passages that was composed for the Mannheim virtuoso Friedrich Ramm, and the Flute Quartet in D ? written for the highly accomplished amateur musician Ferdinand Dejean and in which the principal voice, equipped with pearling runs in the first movement, is treated with great care, displaying nothing of the composer?s supposed aversion to the instrument. Both works are milestones of their respective genres, and they are joined on this recording by three pieces originally composed for mechanical organ (and arranged for this recording by flautist Markus Brönnimann), originally commissioned by Count Deym to be used as accompaniment for a newly erected mausoleum in Vienna. Among these, the Fantasia in F minor K608 stands out as the most intense and dramatic, combining rigorous harmonic invention with memorable melody, polyphonic complexity and compositional virtuosity. Brönnimann?s suggestion as to a possible comparison with the works of the American-born composer Conlon Nancarrow, as mentioned in the booklet note, reveals just how forwardthinking this music was for its time.At hand to perform these works is Ensemble Pyramide, a group whose diverse repertoire ranges from Baroque to 21st century and whose recital programmes are often based around the juxtaposition between new and old. Based in Zurich and awarded the city?s cultural stipend ?Werkjahr für Interpretation? in 2006, its recordings for radio and on CD (which take in labels such as Naxos and Ars Musici) are complemented by an active recording schedule throughout Europe.Other information:- Recorded in 2013 in Switzerland.- At the centre of this new recording are beautiful arrangements for wind ensemble of three works written originally for mechanical organ, works of surprising dramatic and emotional character, two of which are in the dark and tragic key of F minor. The arrangement for flute, oboe, violin, viola and cello enhances rather than diminishes the dramatic impact of the original works.- The other two works are featuring wind instruments as soloist (a specialty of Mozart, the great emancipator of winds): the genial D major Flute Quartet and the delightful Oboe Quartet, works of great melodic invention and instrumental joy.- Clear articulation, warmth of tone and infective pleasure characterise the performances of the Ensemble Pyramide, who already made a wonderful recording of French chamber music by Koechlin and Maurice Emmanuel on Brilliant Classics, BC 9422.- Booklet contains engaging liner notes on the music.

D'Anglebert: Complete Harpsichord Music MAC

Muzyka na CD

Despite the fact that he came from a modest background, the composer and harpsichordist Jean-Henri d’Anglebert managed to carve out an impressive career for himself in 17th-century Paris, which culminated with his appointment as harpsichordist at the court of King Louis XIV. His musical style is characterised by a rich and expressive contrapuntal and harmonic language, as well as lavish ornamentation. The four Suites heard here constitute D’Anglebert’s Pieces de Clavecin, which represent one of the most significant musical achievements of the second half of the 17th century. It is the composer’s magnum opus, in which he took what he had learnt about the French school of composition and performance from his predecessor at Louis XIV’s court, the highly influential Jacques Champion de Chambonnieres, and enhanced it with his unique artistry. The Lully transcriptions showcase D’Anglebert’s admiration for, and close affinity with, the composer – he played the harpsichord in many of the performances of Lully’s tragédies lyriques – and invest what was the widespread and sometimes commonplace practice of transcription with a much greater artistic value, using the harpsichord to suggest orchestral textures. D’Anglebert’s complete harpsichord works are performed by early music specialist Francesco Cera, who regularly appears with leading early music ensembles and has been acclaimed for his ‘great intelligence’ and ‘impeccable interpretative command’ (Amadeus). Other information: - Recorded in 2013 in Italy. - This important release present the complete music for harpsichord on 3 CD’s by Henri D’Anglebert. - D’Angelbert was a famous keyboard virtuoso and composer at the court of Louis the XIV, the Sun King.
