Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Vietnam's Forgotten Army NEW YORK UNIVERSITY PRESS

"Vietnam's Forgotten Army: Heroism and Betrayal in the ARVN" chronicles the lives of Pham Van Dinh and Tran Ngoc Hue, two of the brightest young stars in the Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN). Both men fought with valour in a war that seemed to have no end, exemplifying ARVN bravery and determination that is largely forgotten or ignored in the West. However, while Hue fought until he was captured by the North Vietnamese Army and then endured thirteen years of captivity, Dinh surrendered and defected to the enemy, for whom he served as a teacher in the reeducation of his former ARVN comrades. An understanding of how two lives that were so similar diverged so dramatically provides a lens through which to understand the ARVN and South Vietnam's complex relationship with Americas government and military. The lives of Dinh and Hue reflect the ARVNs battlefield successes, from the recapture of the Citadel in Hue City in the Tet Offensive of 1968, to Dinhs unheralded role in the seizure of Hamburger Hill a year later. However, their careers expose an ARVN that was over-politicized, tactically flawed, and dependent on American logistical and firepower support.Marginalized within an American war, ARVN faced a grim fate as U.S. forces began to exit the conflict. As the structure of the ARVN/U.S. alliance unravelled, Dinh and Hue were left alone to make the most difficult decisions of their lives. Andrew Wiest weaves historical analysis with a compelling narrative, culled from extensive interviews with Dinh, Hue, and other key figures. Once both military superstars, Dinh is viewed by a traitor by many within the South Vietnamese community, while Hue, an expatriate living in northern Virginia, is seen as a hero who never let go of his ideals. Their experiences and legacies mirror that of the ARVNs rise and fall as well as the tragic history of South Vietnam.

League of Regrettable Superheroes Quirk Books

A fun, funny, and affectionate look at the strangest superheroes to ever appear in comics, some so hilariously odd that it's hard to believe they were ever published. Featuring vintage comic book art, with equally colourful commentary from a die-hard comic book blogger and cartoonist, The League of Regrettable Superheroes is a different window into the superhero phenomenon that's become so prevalent in movies, television and pop culture. For every Batman or Spiderman who hit the big time with a blockbuster movie, there are countless failures, also-rans, and D-listers. Some were shockingly ill-conceived, some were hilariously off-target, and some were justmind-numbingly weird. And now, finally, these long-forgotten heroes will get their day in the sun. The League of Regrettable Superheroes presents one hundred of the strangest superheroes to ever see print, complete with backstories, vintage art, and colourful commentary from author Jon Morris. Within these pages, you'll meet heroic characters like Captain Tootsie (Tootsie Roll spokeshero) Bee Man (like Batman, but with bees!), Squirrel Girl (a rare bright spot in comics' darkest hours), Prez (America's groovy teenage president/vampire fighter) and Skateman (roller-skated avenger in a pre-Rollerblade world). The League of Regrettable Superheroes celebrates the artistic train-wrecks that can only happen in the anything-goes world of comics, where a creative misfire can produce entertainingly bizarre results. Drawing on the entire history of the medium, the book includes characters that haven't seen the light of day in decades, pulling from defunct and long-forgotten comics publishers as well as DC and Marvel. Author Jon Morris, cartoonist and founder of the comic book blog Gone and Forgotten, provides insight and context, as well as curation, for this astonishing roster of not-ready-for-prime-time heroes.

Excerpt from Tecumseh: Or, the Battle of the Thames, a National Drama: In Five ActsThis night a native bar unfolds a sceneThat, yet, abides within the mem'ry green; His first attempt the Thespian art to reach,Heroic deeds through mimic life to teach.Long had the Nation, ere to arms she rushed,Suffered - till pity wept and virtue blush'd;Spies round the land like gaunt Hyena's prowl'd,While faction, like an unchain'd maniac howl'd.Our gallant mariners - forbear the theme -Their blood, from scourgings, dyed the ocean stream:The savage axe was whetted for our doom,The vandal torch was lighted to consume.Columbia dropp'd the olive from her hand,She grasp'd her arrows and drew forth her brand; In awe profound, the nations from afar,Gazed to behold her ride on Vict'ry's car.High beat the gen'rous heart - her praises rungFrom every voice that had a Freeman's tongue. The foe, at length, humanity was taught,And back the dove the peaceful olive brought.Rank'd with those feats that admiration claims,In brilliance stands "The Battle of the Thames;"At Raisin's stream, and at Miami's flood,Had the stern Indian glutted him with blood.Lo! Perry's voice in startling thunder spoke,And Johnson! soon, the savage sceptre broke:The mighty Chief, before him, prostrate fell,With whom expired the last appaling yell. The West, in mourning weeds, look'd on and smil'd,And hail'd the Champion as her first-born child. The poet, now, will this event explore,He craves your candor, but - asks no more.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The #1 New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove returns with Beartown-an instant New York Times bestseller-about a forgotten town fractured by scandal, and the amateur hockey team that might just change everything.People say Beartown is finished. A tiny community nestled deep in the forest, it is slowly losing ground to the ever encroaching trees. But down by the lake stands an old ice rink, built generations ago by the working men who founded this town. And in that ice rink is the reason people in Beartown believe tomorrow will be better than today. Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semi-finals, and they actually have a shot at winning. All the dreams of this place now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys.Being responsible for the hopes of an entire town is a heavy burden, and the semi-final match is the catalyst for a violent act that will leave a young girl traumatized and a town in turmoil. Accusations are made and, like ripples on a pond, they travel through all of Beartown, leaving no resident unaffected.Beartown explores the hopes that bring a small community together, the secrets that tear it apart, and the courage it takes for an individual to go against the grain. In this story of a small forest town, Fredrik Backman has found the entire world. "Like Friday Night Lights, this is about more than youth sports; it's part coming-of-age novel, part study of moral failure, and finally a chronicle of groupthink in which an unlikely hero steps forward to save more than one person from self-destruction" (Kirkus Reviews).
