Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... From the reviews of the first edition of Architecture of New York City. "It should provide joy to anyone even vaguely interested in this city and its artifacts. It is very likely to turn them into enthusiasts." --New York Times Book Review ".weaves the little-known stories of 80 buildings and landmarks into a colorful tapestry of New York's whirlwind history. This richly illustrated guide can be read from beginning to end with great pleasure." --Publishers Weekly ".Reynolds takes a new look at the older glories of New York. The architecture is freshly seen and is clearly researched. Reynolds' splendid photographs present highly original views of familiar (and not so familiar) important structures and sites." --Adolph Placzek, former president of the Society of Architectural Historians The history of New York City is a rich pageant of culture, commerce, social change, and human drama stretching back five hundred years. And when we know where to look for it, it is all there for us to see, vividly etched into the cityscape. Now in this celebration of New York's architecture, Donald Martin Reynolds helps us to see and appreciate, as never before, the city's monuments and masterpieces, and to hear the tales they have to tell. With the help of nearly 200 striking photographs (20 of them new to this edition), Dr. Reynolds takes us on an unforgettable tour of five centuries of architectural change and innovation--from 16th-century Dutch canals and 18th-century farmhouses, to the elevator buildings of the 1870s (precursors of skyscrapers) and the Art Deco, Bauhaus, and Post-modern buildings that make up New York City's celebrated skyline. Floor by floor stone by stone, detail by detail Dr. Reynolds lovingly describes 90 of the city's most striking buildings, bridges, parks, and places. He tells us when, why, and how they were built and who built them, and in the process, he evokes the illustrious and exciting history of this restless, ceaselessly seductive metropolis.

*The New York Times bestseller****Updated to include Obama's second term, Trump's first year and a half, climate change, nuclear winter, Korea, Russia, Iran, China, Libya, ISIS, and Syria** 'This is not history for history's sake, however - this is the history of our present and future, long beyond cold war, into war on terror, war on drugs' Ed Vulliamy, GuardianThe Untold History of the United States is filmmaker Oliver Stone and historian Peter Kuznick's riveting landmark account of the rise and decline of the American empire - the most powerful and dominant nation the world has ever seen. Probing the dark corners of the administrations of eighteen presidents, from Woodrow Wilson to Donald Trump, they dare to ask just how far the US has drifted from its founding democratic ideals. Beginning with the bloody suppression of the Filipino struggle for independence and spanning the two World Wars, it documents how US administrations have repeatedly intervened in conflicts on foreign soil, taking part in covert operations and wars in Latin American, Asia and the Middle East.At various times it has overthrown elected leaders in favour of right-wing dictators, for both economic and political gain. Examining America's atomic history, Stone and Kuznick argue that the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were militarily unnecessary and morally indefensible. They show how the United States has repeatedly brandished nuclear threats and come terrifyingly close to nuclear war. They expose how US presidents have trampled on the US constitution and international law and lay bare the recent transformation of United States into a national security state with the closest links to Russia since the end of the Second World War. Using the latest research and recently declassified records, The Untold History builds a meticulously documented and shocking picture of the American empire, showing how it has determined the course of world events for the interests of the few across the twentieth century and beyond.

Niall Ferguson's "The War of the World: History's Age of Hatred" re-tells the story of history's most savage century as a continual war that raged for 100 years. At the beginning of the twentieth century, globalizing, booming economies married to technological breakthroughs seemed to promise a better world for most people. Instead, the 20th century proved to be overwhelmingly the most violent, frightening and brutalized in history with fanatical, often genocidal warfare engulfing most societies between the outbreak of the First World War and the end of the Cold War. What turned it into a bloodbath? From the plains of Poland to the killing fields of Cambodia, Niall Ferguson reveals how economic boom-and-bust, decaying empires and - above all - poisonous ideas of race led men to treat each other as aliens. It was an age of hatred that ended with the twilight, not the triumph, of the West. And, he warns, it could happen all over again. "A heartbreaking, serious and thoughtful survey of human evil that is utterly fascinating and dramatic". (Simon Sebag Montefiore, "The New York Times"). "Unputdownable, controversial, compelling". ("Independent on Sunday")."A big, bold and brilliantly belligerent book". ("Sunday Telegraph"). "Hums with energy, quotable insights and pithy summaries". ("Observer"). "Gripping". (Tristram Hunt). Niall Ferguson is one of Britain's most renowned historians. He is Laurence A. Tisch Professor of History at Harvard University, a Senior Research Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford and a Senior Fellow of the Hoover Institution, Stanford University. He is the bestselling author of "Paper and Iron", "The House of Rothschild", "The Pity of War", "The Cash Nexus", "Empire", "Colossus", "The War of the World" and "The Ascent of Money".

This monumental history asks the simple question: How did we end up in a war in Vietnam? To answer that question Fredrik Logevall traces the forty-year path that led us from World War I to the first American casualties in 1959. Using fresh archives in Washington, Hanoi, and Paris, Cornell University Professor of History Fredrik Logevall shows how senior French and United States officials proved unwilling to confront reality in Vietnam, despite having excellent intelligence information at their disposal, and despite possessing their own private doubts about the prospects. And, to an astonishing degree, Embers of War shows how the problems Americans faced in Vietnam had been faced before them by the French. In Bernard Fall's words, Americans were "dreaming different dreams than the French but walking in the same footsteps." FREDRIK LOGEVALL is John S. Knight Professor of International Studies and Professor of History at Cornell University, where he serves as director of the Mario Einaudi Center for International Studies."A balanced, deeply researched history of how, as French colonial rule faltered, a succession of American leaders moved step by step down a road toward full-blown war."--Pulitzer Prize citation. ""Embers of War", a remarkable new history of the first Vietnamese war by Fredrik Logevall" The Economist. "Fredrik Logevall's excellent book "Choosing War "(1999) chronicled the American escalation of the Vietnam War in the early 1960s. With "Embers of "War, he has written an even more impressive book about the French conflict in Vietnam and the beginning of the American one...It is the most comprehensive history of that time. Logevall, a professor of history at Cornell University, has drawn from many years of previous scholarship as well as his own. And he has produced a powerful portrait of the terrible and futile French war from which Americans learned little as they moved toward their own engagement in Vietnam." The New York Times Book Review-Editor's Choice. 2013 Pulitzer Prize-winning history of America's four-decade-long road to war in Vietnam.

Thompson Submachine Gun - 2878800865

Thompson Submachine Gun Bloomsbury Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Thompson submachine gun, or Tommy gun developed an almost iconic status during the 20th century. It had an unusual beginning, for it was developed during the dying days of World War I as a 'one-man, hand-held machine gun'. The war ended before these first prototypes could be shipped to Europe but once the M1921 Thompson formally entered production it was used by the criminals working in Chicago and New York during the 1920s. With the police increasingly outgunned they too were forced to equip themselves with the Tommy gun. It quickly came to be used in Hollywood films, and by the end of the 1930s it would have probably faded from view had history not intervened. With the entry of the US into World War II there was an urgent need to equip and arm a force of epic proportions; the Thompson submachine gun began a second career as part of the US Army. It also became the weapon of choice for the small band of British commandos as they conducted a number of daring raids against the heart of occupied Europe.
