The Life Games of Akiva Rubinstein, Vol. 1: Uncrowned King

Szachy > Inne wydawnictwa

Akiva Rubinstein occupies a unique position in chess history. One of the greatest artists ever to sit down at a chessboard, Rubinstein was also the strongest player never to get a shot at the title of World Champion.   This book focuses on the years 1882-1920, covering Rubinstein#8217;s rise from a modest upbringing to his emergence as Emanuel Lasker#8217;s chief challenger in the last years leading up to World War I. It also examines the effects this conflict had on his sensitive psyche and the way it influenced his play in the post-War years.   The most definitive work ever done on the first part of Rubinstein#8217;s career, this  revised and expanded edition  of The Life Games of Akiva Rubinstein, Volume 1: Uncrowned King offers almost 500 games, many of them deeply annotated with notes translated from top players of the pre-World War I era, including Lasker, Tarrasch, Schlechter and Rubinstein.  The authors have also made many new annotations to the games and uncovered quite a bit of interesting material, including recent discoveries on Rubinstein#8217;s stay in Sweden after World War I.    The second edition of The Life Games of Akiva Rubinstein, Volume 1: Uncrowned King is 20 percent larger than its predecessor and with its wealth of crosstables, archival photos, multiple indexes and through bibliography it offers a treasure trove for the Rubinstein fan.   International Master  Nikolay Minev  was three times champion of his native Bulgaria and represented his country six times in Chess Olympiads, several times on top board. An expert on endings, Minev was one of the principal contributors to Chess Informant#8217;s mammoth Encyclopedia of Chess Endings series. He served for many years as editor of the Bulgarian national chess magazine Shakhmatna misl and was a regular columnist for Inside Chess for over ten years. Since 1983 Minev has made his home in Seattle.   International Master  John Donaldson  has served nine times as Captain for the US national chess team, most recently at the Olympiad in Turin 2006 where the Americans placed third. The author of more than thirty books covering all aspects of the game, Donaldson also has two Grandmaster norms. He has served since 1998 as the Director of the Mechanics#8217; Institute Chess Club in San Francisco and makes his home across the Bay in Berkeley. John Watson, The Week in Chess: "A book that belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in the all-time great players." Paul Kane, The Compulsive Reader: "A wonderful tribute to a sophisticated, subtle chess player. A splendid volume of record, deserving full praise and recommendation." Dr. W. Schweitzer, Rochade Europa: "A great achievement." Johannes Fischer, KARL Magazine: "Also because of the many pictures and the nicely readable lay-out this is a very good book." British Chess Magazine: "This is an enlarged second edition (...) and includes a number of newly-discovered games (...) Anyone who failed to get the first edition now have a quite undeserved opportunity to remedy their omission with profit." Thomas Beherens, Chess-International: "If you are intersted in chess history, then this book offers quite a lot of reading material on an almost academic level (...) Moreover, it also is a big trainining book (...) recommended to learn to play real strategic chess."

Manifold Greatness: the Making of the King James Bible tells the story of the creation and immediate afterlife of the King James translation of the bible, first published in 1611. The King James Bible is the most printed book in existence, with one billion copies in print. Its effect on the English language is incalculable, both in common parlance and in literature. Richly illustrated with manuscripts, artefacts, and archival material concerning the Oxford Translators such as the annotated Bodleian Bishops' Bible of 1602, pages from the Wycliffite and Tyndale bibles and an edition of the Bishop's Bible owned by Elizabeth I, this book also contains material on the later reception of the King James Bible in America, including a chapter on the King James Bible and the Folger Shakespeare Library.Eight chapters contributed by leading academics in the field discuss the history of biblical translation, the political background to the project, the Oxford Translators (including Henry Savile, John Rainolds, and John Harmar) and their working milieu, the book and its cultural politics, and the reception and influence of the King James Bible up until 1769 (the publication date of the 'Oxford Standard' edition, the first revision of the 1611 translation). Published to commemorate the four-hundredth anniversary of the publication of the King James Bible and marking the first collaboration of two of the world's leading libraries, this book brings together key research and documentation to provide a lively and meticulous account of this publishing phenomenon.

Incarnate Word Wipf & Stock Publishers

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Incarnate Word contains a selection of the key writings on the doctrines of Christology produced by the theologians of Mercersburg Seminary during the middle of the nineteenth century. Despite the seminary's small stature and marginal position within American religious life, these texts represent some of the most profound wrestlings with the doctrine of the person of Christ that appeared in antebellum America, engaging the latest in German theological scholarship as well as the riches of the Christian tradition. As such, they command more than mere historical interest, providing rich conversation partners for contemporary debates in Reformed Christology, and anticipating the insights of such key twentieth-century theologians as T. F. Torrance. The present critical edition carefully preserves the original texts, while providing extensive introductions, annotations, and bibliography to orient the modern reader and facilitate further scholarship. The Mercersburg Theology Study Series is an attempt to make available for the first time, in attractive, readable, and scholarly modern editions, the key writings of the nineteenth-century movement known as the Mercersburg Theology. An ambitious multi-year project, this aims to make an important contribution to the scholarly community and to the broader reading public, who can at last be properly introduced to this unique blend of American and European, Reformed and catholic theology. ""Nevin is one of the most important theologians in all of American history but sadly he is neglected by nearly all but fervent acolytes. The writings in this volume stand at the center of his oeuvre, and deserve a wide hearing from historians of religion, and especially theologians, who still have much to learn from this Christocentric, evangelical-Catholic intellectual (and his colleagues Schaff and Gans, also represented here.) The essays in your hand have been judiciously selected, well introduced, and helpfully annotated. They offer to a new generation of scholars and church folks a treasure trove of thinking on the incarnation of God."" --Douglas A. Sweeney, Professor of Church History and the History of Christian Thought, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School, Deerfield, IL ""The Mercersburg theologians, seeking a church that would be at once Catholic, evangelical, and reformed, remain relevant today for their recovery of biblical, patristic, and Reformation themes, unified by then new currents in German thought. These essays on Christology, ably edited by William Evans, give us insight into the heart of their theology. . . . His introductions and notes show clearly and articulately how the Mercersburg theologians linked the doctrines of incarnation, cross, resurrection, spirit and church, without the overemphasis on one or another of them that so often skews theological reflection."" --Eugene TeSelle, Professor emeritus of Theology and Church History, Vanderbilt Divinity School, Nashville, TN ""Rejecting the traditions of Princeton and New England, the Mercersburg theologians set forth a vibrant and mystical understanding of the living Savior which resourced and permeated their high ecclesiological and sacramental convictions, challenging the Reformed sensibilities of their days and continuing to inspire theologians today. The resultant collection will be of interest to church historians and doctrinal theologians, both those with particular interests in the Reformed tradition and those with wider concerns for the ecumenical conversation. Lucidly introduced, scrupulously edited, and beautifully presented, this text is a delightful addition to the library."" --Paul T Nimmo, Professor of Divinity, King's College, University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland Authors: John Williamson Nevin (1803-1886), and P
