Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... G-man's Life The FBI Being Deep Throat Public Affairs

Inne 1

The first full portrait of one of the most enduringly mysterious public figures of our era - the man who Bob Woodward called "Deep Throat", and who thought of himself as the "Lone Ranger". Mark Felt, one of the most celebrated sources in American history, comes vividly to life in this combination of biography and autobiography. Felt learned spy craft in World War II and rose to the number two position at the FBI. But his place in history was secured when he decided to share his views on the probe of the Watergate break-in with Bob Woodward. Felt assiduously stayed away from "leaking" facts, but as Woodward and Carl Bernstein ploughed their way through the cover-up conspiracy, Felt guided them towards truth and away from errors. Felt's life story would make a good book, but seen through the filter of his role in Watergate, it becomes an amazing tale. Felt is now old, frail and forgetful. But he wrote an account of Watergate in 1982 and in it says that the FBI needed a "Lone Ranger" to protect the agency from the corruption the White House was imposing upon it. He had been tried, convicted and pardoned for his role in authorizing break-ins of the apartments of the Weather Underground and he was bitter at how the country he had served so long had treated him. But he did not, as he might have done, seize credit for being Deep Throat. It was only as he neared the end of his life that he confided his secret to his family which then shared it with their lawyer, John O'Connor. The answer to the question of who is Mark Felt? And why did he risk so much for his country is brilliantly answered in "A G-Man's Life". Underpinned by Felt's 1979 memoir and secret manuscript written in the 1980s, "A G-Man's Life" combines significant new revelations from his personal letters and memos, together with his family's and intimate associate's account of his life. Fascinating additional material from Felt includes his thoughts on how he provided guidance to Woodward and why. John O'Connor wrote the "Vanity Fair" story, which disclosed Mr Felt's identity as "Deep Throat". Together, they re-ignite this key event from the past, defining Mark Felt's role, and answering crucial questions on the scandal that rocked not just America, but the world.

When Emperor Meiji began his rule, in 1867, Japan was a splintered empire, dominated by the shogun and the daimyos, who ruled over the country's more than 250 decentralized domains and who were, in the main, cut off from the outside world, staunchly antiforeign, and committed to the traditions of the past. Before long, the shogun surrendered to the emperor, a new constitution was adopted, and Japan emerged as a modern, industrialized state. Despite the length of his reign, little has been written about the strangely obscured figure of Meiji himself, the first emperor ever to meet a European. Most historians discuss the period that takes his name while barely mentioning the man, assuming that he had no real involvement in affairs of state. Even Japanese who believe Meiji to have been their nation's greatest ruler may have trouble recalling a single personal accomplishment that might account for such a glorious reputation. Renowned Japan scholar Donald Keene sifts the available evidence to present a rich portrait not only of Meiji but also of rapid and sometimes violent change during this pivotal period in Japan's history. In this vivid and engrossing biography, we move with the emperor through his early, traditional education; join in the formal processions that acquainted the young emperor with his country and its people; observe his behavior in court, his marriage, and his relationships with various consorts; and follow his maturation into a "Confucian" sovereign dedicated to simplicity, frugality, and hard work. Later, during Japan's wars with China and Russia, we witness Meiji's struggle to reconcile his personal commitment to peace and his nation's increasingly militarized experience of modernization. Emperor of Japan conveys in sparkling prose the complexity of the man and offers an unrivaled portrait of Japan in a period of unique interest.

Great Movies IV The University of Chicago Press

No film critic has ever been as influential--or as beloved-- as Roger Ebert. Over more than four decades, he built a reputation writing reviews for the Chicago Sun-Times and, later, arguing onscreen with rival Chicago Tribune critic Gene Siskel and later Richard Roeper about the movies they loved and loathed. But Ebert went well beyond a mere "thumbs up" or "thumbs down." Readers could always sense the man behind the words, a man with interests beyond film and a lifetime's distilled wisdom about the larger world. Although the world lost one of its most important critics far too early, Ebert lives on in the minds of moviegoers today, who continually find themselves debating what he might have thought about a current movie. The Great Movies IV is the fourth--and final--collection of Roger Ebert's essays, comprising sixty-two reviews of films ranging from the silent era to the recent past. From films like The Cabinet of Caligari and Viridiana that have been considered canonical for decades to movies only recently recognized as masterpieces to Superman, The Big Lebowski, and Pink Floyd: The Wall, the pieces gathered here demonstrate the critical acumen seen in Ebert's daily reviews and the more reflective and wide-ranging considerations that the longer format allowed him to offer. Ebert's essays are joined here by an insightful foreword by film critic Matt Zoller Seitz, the current editor-in-chief of the official Roger Ebert website, and a touching introduction by Chaz Ebert. A fitting capstone to a truly remarkable career, The Great Movies IV will introduce newcomers to some of the most exceptional movies ever made, while revealing new insights to connoisseurs as well.

Arthur W. Pink Collection Vol 2 Bottom of the Hill Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Arthur W. Pink Collection Vol 2 includes three Arthur Pink classics; Comfort for Christians, The Beatitudes, and Regeneration or The New Birth. "The work unto which the servant of Christ is called is many-sided. Not only is he to preach the Gospel to the unsaved, to feed God's people with knowledge and understanding (Jer. 3:15), and to take up the stumbling stone out of their way (Isa. 57:14), but he is also charged to "cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show My people their transgression" (Isa. 58:1 and cf. 1 Tim. 4:2). While another important part of his commission is stated in, "Comfort ye, My people, said your God" (Isa. 40:1). "What an honorable title, "My people!" What an assuring relationship: "your God!" What a pleasant task: "comfort ye My people!" A threefold reason may be suggested for the duplicating of the charge. First, because sometimes the souls of believers refuse to be comforted (Ps. 77:2), and the consolation needs to be repeated. Second, to press this duty the more emphatically upon the preacher's heart, that he need not be sparing in administering cheer. Third, to assure us how heartily desirous God himself is that His people should be of good cheer (Phil. 4:4)." "Opinion has been much divided concerning the design, scope, and application of the Sermon on the Mount. Most commentators have seen in it an exposition of Christian ethics. Men such as the late Count Tolstoi have regarded it as the setting forth of a "golden rule" for all men to live by. Others have dwelt upon its dispensational bearings, insisting that it belongs not to the saints of the present dispensation but to believers within a future millennium. Two inspired statements, however, reveal its true scope. In Matthew 5:1, 2, we learn that Christ was here teaching His disciples. From Matthew 7:28, 29, it is clear that He was also addressing a great multitude of the people. Thus it is evident that this address of our Lord contains instruction both for believers and unbelievers alike." Two chief obstacles lie in the way of the salvation of any of Adam's fallen descendants: bondage to the guilt and penalty of sin, bondage to the power and presence of sin; or, in other words, their being bound for Hell and their being unfit for Heaven. These obstacles are, so far as man is concerned, entirely insurmountable. This fact was unequivocally established by Christ, when, in answer to His disciples' question, "Who then can be saved?", He answered, "with men this is impossible." A lost sinner might more easily create a world than save his own soul. But (forever be His name praised), the Lord Jesus went on to say, "with God all things are possible" (Matt. 19:25, 26). Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar. Born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society and quickly rose in prominence. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death,' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

This is the true story of C.S. Lewis - one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century - whose books for children and adults have become much-loved classics. Part of the story of C.S. Lewis has been made famous through the film 'Shadowlands'. Here this fascinating man's entire life-story is told by those who knew him personally. C.S. Lewis was born in Belfast in 1898 and was sent to England for a public school education with his elder brother, Warren. Lewis exhibited a genius for imagination and perception from his earliest years. Brought up in a Christian household, Lewis lost his faith in his teenage years but was to regain it, with reluctance, as a fellow at Magdalen College, Oxford. His faith subsequently influenced his writings. He became a vigorous champion of the Christian faith through classics such as Mere Christianity and through his BBC broadcasts. His Chronicles of Narnia became children's classics and he was deluged with correspondence from his young readers. In his latter years he unexpectedly fell deeply in love with a divorced American, Joy Greshem, and married her, only to suffer the devastation of her death a few years later. C.S.Lewis died in 1963 at his home in Oxford. During his lifetime C.S. Lewis suggested to his friend, Roger Lancelyn Green, who was a fellow English scholar, that he would undertake his biography one day. After Lewis's death in 1963 Lancelyn Green and Walter Hooper were approached by several of Lewis's friends, to write the biography. Warren Lewis, brother to Jack, contributed a great deal to the writing. The authors had at their disposal a vast collection of letters and diaries, as well as the recollections of many surviving family members and friends. Walter Hooper has enhanced the original text with additional material to provide a new, expanded edition which all C.S. Lewis fans will be keen to own.

"Dazzling . . . In this extremely creepy book, Hayder's third, the diabolically gifted British author spins a fascinating mystery from the legacy of Japanese atrocities during World War II."--"Entertainment Weekly" "A haunting, lyrical, disturbing, important, suspenseful, wonderfully written and beautiful book. You will love reading it, and you will not soon forget the experience."--Harlan Coben Grey has a lot to prove and even more to hide. A young Englishwoman obsessed with a past she cannot understand, she has come to Tokyo following rumors of a rare piece of film footage shot during the notorious Nanking Massacre in 1937, which has been lost for decades. But the only man who can help, a survivor of the massacre and now a visiting professor at a prestigious Tokyo university, will have nothing to do with her. Increasingly desperate in an alien city, Grey accepts a job as a hostess in an upmarket nightspot catering to Japanese businessmen and wealthy yakuza, where one gangster--an old man in a wheelchair surrounded by a terrifying entourage, rumored to rely on a powerful elixir for his continued health--might be the key to the answers Grey seeks. Taut and gritty, with the redolent atmosphere of Ian Rankin and the spine-tingling characters of Thomas Harris, "The Devil of Nanking" is a tour de force that confirms Mo Hayder as a thriller writer of the first order. "Wrenching . . . A beautifully controlled thriller about culture clash . . . Scary."--Douglas Wolk, "The New York Times Book Review" "There is a terrible beauty to both narratives as they unfold toward an agonizing but inevitable conclusion, with the two stories dovetailing exquisitely . . . "The Devil of Nanking" just may be one of the best books of the year."--Tom and Enid Schantz, "The Denver Post "

5. September 1970. Austria has lost a national hero. Jochen Rindt is dead. The 1965 Le Mans winner who drove his way from airfield races to Formula Two and right on to Formula One, where he was to be crowned champion posthumously, was a dazzling personality. Born in Germany and raised in Austria, he knew how to polarize relationships. The book portrays his sheltered childhood with his grandparents after he lost his parents in the war, the onset of puberty, his rapid yet stormy career, and its tragic end in Monza. This is a portrait of a champion with hidden depths.Dr. Erich Glavitza, journalist, author, racing and stunt driver and, on top of that, a PhD in philosophy, knew Rindt well and, in his well-known relaxed manner, has painted this picture of Jochen Rindt, that is as compelling as it is insightful and sensitive. He describes Rindt's impetuous character and the little-known, completely different relationship he had with his half-brother, with whom Glavitza spoke at length for this book. Finally, Erich Glavitza analyses in detail the fatal accident at Monza with the F1 Lotus. This is a comprehensive study of Jochen Rindt, the man and the racing driver, which is richly illustrated with private photos and with racing pictures some of which have never been shown before. These include ones from Alois Rottensteiner, who was also close to Rindt and part of the racing scene of the 1960s and 1970s. The preface is by Bernie Ecclestone, Rindt's manager and friend. To mark the 50th anniversary of the racing driver's death, McKlein is presenting this 400-page large-format biography in a noble design and slipcase.-------------------------------------------------------------5 septembre 1970, l'Autriche perd un héros national : Jochen Rindt est décédé. Gulliver's Travels Penguin Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A wickedly clever satire uses comic inversions to offer telling insights into the nature of man and society, the "Penguin Classics" edition of Jonathan Swift's "Gulliver's Travels" is edited with an introduction and notes by Robert Demaria, Jr. "Gulliver's Travels" describes the four voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, a ship's surgeon. In "Lilliput" he discovers a world in miniature; towering over the people and their city, he is able to view their society from the viewpoint of a god. However, in Brobdingnag, a land of giants, tiny Gulliver himself comes under observation, exhibited as a curiosity at markets and fairs. In Laputa, a flying island, he encounters a society of speculators and projectors who have lost all grip on everyday reality; while they plan and calculate, their country lies in ruins. Gulliver's final voyage takes him to the land of the Houyhnhnms, gentle horses whom he quickly comes to admire - in contrast to the Yahoos, filthy bestial creatures who bear a disturbing resemblance to humans. This text, based on the first edition of 1726, reproduces all the original illustrations and includes an introduction by Robert Demaria, Jr, which discusses the ways "Gulliver's Travels" has been interpreted since its first publication. Jonathan Swift (1667-1745) was born in Dublin. Sent to Kilkenny Grammar School when he was six, Swift later attended Trinity College, Dublin, where he received his BA degree in 1686. He is considered the foremost prose satirist in the English language, which stemmed from his criticism of Britain's repressive colonial policies in Ireland. Among Swift's best known works is his ironic masterpiece, "A Modest Proposal" (1729), and his novel, "Gulliver's Travels" (1726). If you enjoyed "Gulliver's Travels", you might like H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine", also available in "Penguin Classics". "A masterwork of irony...that contains both a dark and bitter meaning and a joyous, extraordinary creativity of imagination". (Malcolm Bradbury).
