Complete Archaeology of Greece - From Hunter Gatherers to the 20th Century A.D John Wiley and Sons Ltd
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
The Complete Archaeology of Greece provides, for the first time, a comprehensive overview of the story of Greece from the first hunter-gatherers up to the Modern era. In 22 chapters and an introduction, John Bintliff surveys all phases of Greek culture, including the traditional foci of the Classical Greek and the Bronze Ages, but also detailing its beginnings in the Greek Palaeolithic (ca. 400,000 B.P.) up to the early modern period (1950 A.D.). Each chronological period is fully explained with the latest discoveries and theories, and richly illustrated. The author focuses on developments during each succeeding period of growth and change in Greek society, the evolution of their material culture, settlement patterns in the rural as well as urban landscapes, and the significance of their symbolic or representational culture--the ways in which architecture, art, and even everyday objects can reveal the social order and lifeways of the ancient Greeks. John Bintliff features well-known works of Greek art, architecture, and ancient texts, but also integrates the newest archaeological discoveries, surveys and excavations for a more comprehensive picture of the Greek past.

Towards a New Architecture Martino Fine Books
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
2014 Reprint of 1927 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. This classic work is a collection of essays written by Le Corbusier advocating for and exploring the concept of modern architecture. The book has had a lasting effect on the architectural profession, serving as the manifesto for a generation of architects, a subject of hatred for others, and unquestionably a critical piece of architectural theory. The architectural historian Reyner Banham once claimed that its influence was unquestionably "beyond that of any other architectural work published in this [20th] century to date". That unparalleled influence has continued, unabated, into the 21st century. The polemical book contains seven essays. Each essay dismisses the contemporary trends of eclecticism and art deco, replacing them with architecture that was meant to be more than a stylistic experiment; rather, an architecture that would fundamentally change how humans interacted with buildings. This new mode of living derived from a new spirit defining the industrial age, demanding a rebirth of architecture based on function and a new aesthetic based on pure form.

Architecture of Failure, The John Hunt Publishing
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Against those who consider architecture to be a wholly optimistic activity, this book shows how the history of modern architecture is inextricably tied to ideas of failure and ruin. By means of an original reading of the earliest origins of modernism, the Architecture of Failure exposes the ways in which failure has been suppressed, ignored and denied in the way we design our cities. It examines the 19th century fantasy architecture of the iron and glass exhibition palaces, strange, unprecedented, dream-like structures, almost all now lost, existing only as melancholy archive fragments; it traces the cultural legacy of these buildings through the heroics of the early 20th century, post-war radicals and recent developments, discussing related themes in art, literature, politics and philosophy. Critiquing the capitalist symbolism of the self-styled contemporary avant-garde, the book outlines a new history of contemporary architecture, and attempts to recover a radical approach to understanding what we build. Exploding the Myths of Modern Architecture Mijnbestseller.nl
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
The Modern movement began in the 1920s when a small group of young architects felt all that had gone before should be rejected and that architectural design should start afresh. This fresh start, they declared, should be based on modern technology and a new, modern approach to life. Their innovations became the 20th century's dominant movement in architecture, crystallizing into the international style of the 1920s and '30s. In Exploding the Myths of Modern Architecture, Malcolm Millais explores the forces and factors that led to the emergence of the Modern movement, arguing that it was based on completely false premises. Millais offers a rarely heard perspective on the Modern movement, explaining its failures and how the well-meaning "revolutionaries" behind it gained and maintained power.
