Nature Landscape and Building for Sustainability University of Minnesota Press
Sztuka
The complexity and scale of the environmental problems confronting humanity today provoke a wide range of responses, from indifference to anger to creativity. Among a growing number of architects, landscape architects, and planners, however, these problems have inspired a new vision-sustainability-to guide their practices. In Nature, Landscape, and Building for Sustainability, a diverse group of contributors considers the concept of sustainability, both philosophically and practically. Some take a broad view of the divisions between nature and humanity, exploring the incomprehensible scale of human intervention in the natural world, the relationship between how we feel about nature and what we do about it, and the commodification of the natural world. Other essays focus on sustainable design practices: sustainability

Regenerative Design for Sustainable Development John Wiley & Sons Inc
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Landscape Architecture Regenerative Design for Sustainable Development Winner, 1994 Merit Award for Communications, American Society of Landscape Architects "Regenerative Design for Sustainable Development is nothing less than a user's manual for planet Earth that integrates the principles of ecological design with practical realities better than anything I've read. John Lyle has written the best book now available on the theory and practice of sustainability ...essential reading for natural resource professionals, architects, planners, educators, environmentalists, and the general public." --David W. Orr, Professor and Chair Environmental Studies Program, Oberlin College. "John Lyle has written a splendid book, Regenerative Design for Sustainable Development. It is perfectly topical; it is committed to the unity of art and science, design and planning, man and nature. It is itself exemplary, and it is a repository of exemplary adaptations. It has carried the environmental movement to a new threshold of ecological planning and design. It should be widely read and employed." --Ian L. McHarg, FASLA."In these times of widespread urban stress and regional disruption, the cogent thoughts of John Tillman Lyle on sustainable cities are on target and highly constructive. They are must reading for planning professionals and all concerned citizens." --John Ormsbee Simonds, FASLA. "More designers need to broaden their horizons in the way John Lyle has put forth in this book. In general, there are far too few land planners, landscape architects, or architects who have any working procedure that approximates what sustainable design entails. This book provides important historical background and contemporary experience to help guide the way."--Pliny Fisk III, Center for Maximum Potential Building Systems. From the despoliation of our rivers and lakes by industrial runoff to the destruction of our atmosphere by sulphur emissions and CFCs, production cycles based on a one-way flow of materials and energy have pushed us to the brink of environmental collapse. It is time for a change, and in this groundbreaking book, John Tillman Lyle offers us a blueprint for implementing that change. This book provides civil engineers, architects, land development planners, and others with practical, realistic approaches to reversing this deadly course. Throughout, the emphasis is on proven regenerative practices for water use, land use, energy use, and building design. Most importantly, it provides ways to reestablish connections between people and nature, between art and science, and between technology and daily life.

Frank Lloyd Wright, English edition Birkhäuser Berlin
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Frank Lloyd Wright (1867 1959) exercised a shaping influence on architectural history throughout the world. The author, Daniel Treiber, has produced a well-researched and thorough presentation that highlights the fundamental aspects of the American architect s work that are relevant from a contemporary perspective. Frank Lloyd Wright (1867 - 1959) exercised a shaping influence on architectural history throughout the world as only very few other architects beside him have done. His structures - developed from landscape, program, material, and construction - are highly individual and independent of the stylistic developments of modern architecture. His constant attempts to invent new things gave rise to the idiosyncratic forms and constructions that are typical of his work.§The author, Daniel Treiber, has produced a well-researched and thorough presentation that highlights the fundamental aspects of the American architect's work that are relevant from a contemporary perspective. He systematically investigates the forms, types, and strategies of Wright s oeuvre and accompanies his outstanding texts with a lavish offering of photographs and plans.§Thanks to his many years of experience teaching design and architectural history at the École d architecture in Lille, France, and elsewhere, the author possesses a deep and comprehensive expert knowledge of his subject.

Road That Is Not Road and Open City Ritoque Chile MIT Press Massachusets Institute of Tech nology
Sztuka
foreword by Joseph Rykwert Several thousand miles south of the equator along the Pacific coast of South America, is the site of the Open City Amereida. It is a laboratory for thought and work, conceived and built by the faculty of architecture of the Catholic University of Valparaiso. Here architects, poets, artists, and engineers have been engaged in one of architectural education's most radical experiments for several decades. The school has long been a destination for those seeking an alternative to conventional academic practice and teaching. Now, its significance is being felt beyond the borders of Chile and South America. Ann Pendleton-Jullian tells the story of the Open City in Ritoque, Chile, a designed city still in formation that has no master plan, no imposed ordering devices, and no hierarchical networks of infrastructure. The strange buildings placed among dunes and grasslands reflect instead the mind's translation of urban phenomena and natural phenomena relative to the construction of memory, and a process of composition that is not dependent on stylistic precedents, drawing boards, or academic discourse. Teaching takes place on site and employs poetic methods to activate the design process; the endeavor is considered more important than the result. More than 100 photographs are included, capturing the mystical spirit of the place and of its architecture. Pendleton-Jullian discusses influences behind the Open City -- the work and working methods of Surrealist French poets, the words and creative attitude of Le Corbusier, the heritage of the South American landscape and culture. Some of the more provocative issues that the work raises include the idea of "city" as it relates to human activity, to its physical reality, and to its intention; the premise of utopianism that rejects the foundations of utopia building; and issues of the sacred relative to the landscape in a modern context. Graham Foundation/MIT Press Series in Contemporary Architectural Discourse"The fascinating premise of this book is the belief in the possibility of founding a city in poetic acts, removing architecture from abstract geometry and centering it on the poetic word. I am very positive about this book and certainly recommend it. The questions it raises are extremely important for the practice of architecture, and particularly for the teaching of the discipline. The author describes the Open City and its theoretical premises with great love. The existence of the experimental city itself is rather unknown in North America. This is a work that deserves to be better known in the English speaking world, in the context of other important pedagogical experiments in architecture ranging from the Bauhaus and Ulm to Cooper Union." -- Alberto Pérez-Gómez, Saidye Rosner Bronfman Professor of the History of Architecture; Director, History and Theory of Architecture Graduate Program, McGill University

Emergence of Biophilic Design Springer Nature Switzerland AG
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
This book addresses the emergence of biophilic design, a form of design that looks at people's intrinsic connection with nature. There is no denying that biophilic design is rapidly expanding globally as an effective response to pressing issues in urban areas and built environments. From being a term few had heard of in 2012, when the author's research began, to one that is currently trending in a broad range of disciplines, the story of its emergence has never been properly told. The story of the emergence of biophilic design is the story of a social movement and how a gathering of people with a common interest and passion can spark a global trend. The book and the stories within are not only engaging but also informative and educational, offering readers an in-depth understanding of what biophilic design is all about, and how to promote its implementation in their own built environment. Hopefully, they will inspire people to act, to campaign and to implement initiatives in their urban environment, with the confidence that they are capable of making a difference. The author spent three years researching the emergence of biophilic design, and why and how it was driven by certain people who championed the concept. Part of the author's research involved a three-month tour of ten North American cities, during which she interviewed 26 key players. These people ranged from community leaders, landscape architects, and academics, to the CEOs of NGOs and government leaders. The result is a collection of stories that illustrate the evolution of biophilic design, and how it was frequently born from a passion for, belief in and love of nature, as well as a response to an urban crisis.

Christopher Payne - Asylum MIT Press Ltd
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
For more than half the nation's history, vast mental hospitals were a prominent feature of the American landscape. From the mid-nineteenth century to the early twentieth, over 250 institutions for the insane were built throughout the United States; by 1948, they housed more than a half million patients. The blueprint for these hospitals was set by Pennsylvania hospital superintendant Thomas Story Kirkbride: a central administration building flanked symmetrically by pavilions and surrounded by lavish grounds with pastoral vistas. Kirkbride and others believed that well-designed buildings and grounds, a peaceful environment, a regimen of fresh air, and places for work, exercise, and cultural activities would heal mental illness. But in the second half of the twentieth century, after the introduction of psychotropic drugs and policy shifts toward community-based care, patient populations declined dramatically, leaving many of these beautiful, massive buildings--and the patients who lived in them--neglected and abandoned.Architect and photographer Christopher Payne spent six years documenting the decay of state mental hospitals like these, visiting seventy institutions in thirty states. Through his lens we see splendid, palatial exteriors (some designed by such prominent architects as H. H. Richardson and Samuel Sloan) and crumbling interiors--chairs stacked against walls with peeling paint in a grand hallway; brightly colored toothbrushes still hanging on a rack; stacks of suitcases, never packed for the trip home. Accompanying Payne's striking and powerful photographs is an essay by Oliver Sacks (who described his own experience working at a state mental hospital in his book Awakenings). Sacks pays tribute to Payne's photographs and to the lives once lived in these places, "where one could be both mad and safe."
