Spatial development of Polish and Ukrainian Big Cities at the Beginning of the 21st Century - Habrel Mykola, Marszał Tadeusz
Książki & Multimedia > Książki
Opis - Poland and Ukraine have a centuries-long history of neighbourly relations. There have been various periods in the long coexistence of the two nations, sometimes good and sometimes painful - besides conflicts that are difficult to forget there are many examples of creative cooperation and joint Polish-Ukrainian achievements. The collapse of the communist system and changes on the political map of this part of the world have created new conditions and new opportunities for the development of relations between Poland and Ukraine. Apart from intensifying economic cooperation, commercial exchange and movement of population (not only in the border region), there is a growing scientific and cultural cooperation. Poland's membership in the European Union and NATO on the one hand, and Ukraine's striving for strengthening the ties with the Western world on the other hand make fostering the partnership relations even more important for achievement of convergent strategic political goals serving the best interests of both nations. During the past two decades, starting from the political breakthrough in the early 1990s, both countries have gone a long way towards reinstatement of democracy, self-government and market mechanisms, and recreation of contacts with the world. Today, Poland anci Ukraine arc dtffeTent countries than twenty years ago. Still, much effort is needed from both nations to completely eliminate the economic and social backwardness caused by five decades of 'real socialism', 'socialist democracy' and 'centrally planned economy'. Among major issues that need to be addressed are those relating to spatial development and sustainable socio-economic relations. Large cities are places where concentration of social and economic problems is greatest; at the same time big cities are natural 'growth poles'. The development of large urban agglomerations and metropolitan areas will determine the competitiveness of countries and regions. Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... It shows how these values can and are being incorporated in local government policy and how they shape voluntary efforts by community groups. Topics covered in separate chapters range from urban design, democracy, and culture to energy, water, transporation, food, waste, health, economy and recreation. Originally conceived as a workbook for students in urban and environment studies, public administration, geography, and planning, Greening Cities is also must reading for community leaders, activists, and indeed anyone concerned about and commited to building a more just and sustainable society.

Society, economy, environment Wydawnictwo Naukowe Bogucki

Sustainable development is one of the most frequently used terms in contemporary social and spatial analysis. Theorists, researchers, planners and politicians discuss the problem in all its possible aspects. Sometimes one gets the impression that the notion of sustainable development is used to describe so many different things that its real meaning seems to be lost. The problem is especially complicated when we discuss the sustainable development of urban areas. The concentration of social and economic phenomena in a relatively small area intensifies the problems stemming from the dynamics of development. And the natural environment is often forgotten in urban development plans. Thus the issue of the sustainable development of cities evokes many doubts, misunderstandings and debates on such questions as:

Sustainable Development Goals and Sustainable Supply Chains in the Post-global Economy Springer International Publishing
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
This book presents a collection of studies on current best practices for delivering sustainable development policies within supply chains. It critiques the limitations of existing business theory and practice on sustainable supply chain management, and discusses opportunities for new conceptual models for businesses to engage with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It examines how businesses can work towards implementing Sustainable Development Goals in the contexts of entrepreneurial initiative, industry collaboration and regional development. SDGs renew the sustainable development agenda for global communities and ask businesses and organisations to reset their sustainable development policies. A strategy to embed sustainable development principles into business operations along the supply chain operations, which has been a conceptual and, in many instances, practitioner, business and industry achievement of the past decades, is not enough to shift the economic and social conditions of poor populations around the world. How would the global supply chains of the future look like? What social relations does it envisage? How will businesses and organisations engage with societies, environments and complex institutional contexts in emerging markets and developing countries, which are faced with issues of population growth, needed leaps in infrastructure provision, educational and health improvements, cultural and institutional shifts? The books challenges current approaches to sustainable supply chain practices guided by discussion on SDGs. It reviews implementation issues of existing sustainable development approaches, assesses the advancement of sustainable development strategies and examines the opportunities for global value chains to increase their positive social and environmental inputs in regions, communities and organisations. The book collects both conceptual and empirical studies set in a variety of business and organisational contexts, such as manufacturing, retail, procurement, cities and industrial parks. It contests the accepted axioms of sustainable practices in the global supply chains and proposes new models for organisations and production networks to engage with societies and address market and production effects on communities and institutions.

Lviv and Łódź at the Turn of 20th Century - Habrel Mykola, Kobojek Elżbieta
Książki & Multimedia > Książki
Opis - The attempt to make a comparative study of Lviv and Łódź in search of certain regularities seems at the first glimpse rather farfetched, because apparently there are rather few analogies between the city of Lviv with its long history and multifunctional tradition and the monofunctional, rather young, industrial city of Łódź. But deeper analysis shows that despite many differences in the course of the history of both cities, some common tendencies can be traced, such as dynamic demographic and spatial development in the second half of the 19th century based on introduction of railway transport, the building of socio-economic and spatial structures of these cities by multi-cultural local communities, and going through half-a-century period of centralized socialist economy after the Second World War. As a result of these processes as well as the influence of globalization, today we can observe in Łódź and in Lviv similar problems and phenomena, influencing their spatial development and functional restructuring. Economic History of Japan: 1600-1900: Economic History of Japan 1914-1955 Oxford University Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
This multi-volume series covers the whole of modern Japanese economic history. The series encompasses both the institutional aspects of Japanese economic development, and the results of econometric and cliometric research to place the key moments of Japanese economic history in a more general context. Volume three, A Dual Structure, covers the first half of the twentieth century when Japan's economic modernization brought the country into the circle of world powers between the two world wars; the economic system established in the Second World War transformed the economy; and postwar reconstruction provided the foundations for an extraordinary economic dynamism. Where appropriate the book looks back to the nineteenth century and forward to the 1960s. Thematic in its approach, A Dual Structure explores how it was that during a prolonged period of hardship for the world economy, particularly during the deflation of the 1920s and the worldwide depression in the early 1930s, Japan's economy managed to overcome these crises and turbulence, before entering into a period of remarkable high-speed economic growth.Issues examined in particular include the development and transformation of Japan's financial system and monetary policy, the emergence of big business as an economic power, the Japanese empire and its colonies, wartime controls, and the economic democratization, reconstruction, and high-speed growth that followed. At the centre of this study is a consideration of the 'dual structure' of the Japanese economy which emerges in this inter-war period, of small-scale companies on the one hand, large industrial firms on the other, and the increasing flow of labor into the cities which resulted. Written by leading Japanese scholars, and available for the first time in English-translation, the contributions have been abridged and re-written for a non-Japanese readership.

The Raqqa Diaries - Mohammed Samer
Książki & Multimedia > Książki
Opis - "A clarion call to all of us that we should not give up. Somewhere there is a voice in the wreckage." (Michael Palin). Since ISIS occupied Raqqa in eastern Syria, it has become one of the most isolated and fear-ridden cities on earth. The sale of televisions has been banned, wearing trousers the wrong length is a punishable offence, and using a mobile phone is considered an unforgivable crime. No journalists are allowed in and the penalty for speaking yo the western media is death by beheading. Despite this, after several months of nervy and often interrupted conversations, the BBC was able to make contact with a small activist group, Al-Sharqiya 24. Finally, courageously, one of their members agreed to write a personal diary about his experiences. Having seen friends and relatives butchered, his community's life shattered and the local economy ruined by these hate-fuelled extremists, Samer is fighting back in the only way he can: by telling the world what is happening to his beloved city. This is Samer's story. Future Is Asian Harper Collins Publishers
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
A compelling, eye-opening account of how Asia is creating a new template for the future of the world from Parag Khanna, a renowned globalization scholar and former senior advisor to the US National Intelligence Council and Special Operations Forces.Asia is where the action is. Five billion people, one-third of the global economy, two-thirds of global economic growth, a third of the Fortune 100 companies, eight of the ten largest armies, five nuclear powers, and massive technological innovation. Whether using demography, geography, or economy as a metric, Asia is already the present-and it is certainly the future. In The Future Is Asian, Parag Khanna sweeps us along on his travels spanning Saudi Arabia to Japan and Russia to Australia, explaining how Asia is by far the most ethnically, linguistically, and culturally diverse region of the planet. Even for Asians, Asia is dizzying to navigate. That complexity leads to common misdiagnoses: Western thinking on Asia conflates the entire region with China, predicts World War III around every corner, and regularly forecasts debt-driven collapse for the region's major economies. But in the real world, the region is experiencing a confident new wave of growth. India and Southeast Asia are now outpacing China, leaders have put aside territorial disputes in favor of integration, and today's infrastructure investments are the platform for the next generation of urban and digital growth. We cannot afford to continue to get Asia so wrong, warns Khanna. If the nineteenth century featured the Europeanization of the world, and the twentieth century its Americanization, then the twenty-first century is surely the time of Asianization. With America's universities and tech sector dependent on Asian talent and politicians singing the praises of Asia's glittering cities and efficient governments, Asia is firmly in our nation's consciousness. Now The Future Is Asian accurately shows Asia from the inside out, telling the story of how this mega-region is coming together and reshaping the entire planet at the same time.

Quaestiones Geographicae 25: Spatial aspects of the Polish transformation Uniwersytet Adama Mickiewicza w Poznaniu
GEODEZJA I KARTOGRAFIA
The book you are holding is the 25th volume of the journal Quaestiones Geographicae, and also the first volume of its new series B entitled "Human Geography and Spatial Management". This is a good occasion to outline briefly the history of the journal and its prospects. Quaestiones Geographicae was established in 1974 as an annual of the then Institute of Geography, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań. Its first editor was Prof. Dr hab. Stefan Kozarski. Initially the scope of the journal covered issues in both physical and socio-economic geography; since 1982, exclusively physical geography. In 2006 there appeared the idea of a return to the original conception of the journal, although in a somewhat modified organisational form. Starting with volume 25, Quaestiones Geographicae will include two series, A - Physical Geography and B - Human Geography and Spatial Management. Each year the given volume will contain two numbers, one in each series. The publisher of the journal is the Faculty of Geographical and Geological Sciences of Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. The first number of the new series, prepared on the occasion of a conference of the International Geographical Union in Brisbane, contains articles presenting the latest achievements of the Faculty in socio-economic geography. However, it is the publisher's intention to make the journal increasingly international in scope. We hope to invite authors from a variety of centres all over the world, representing not only geosciences but also other disciplines (like spatial planning, regional economics, and environmental science) to send their contributions that can be subsumed under the Human Geography and Spatial Management series. Preferably, they should be works with a deep theoretical background, overviews, or comparative studies of interest to an international readership. The first number of the series is theme-oriented and devoted to spatial aspects of the postcommunist transformation in Poland. Fifteen years of the transformation of the socio-economic system is a period long enough to allow some generalisations. The articles collected in the book address key issues of the transformation, such as the role of a knowledge-based economy in regional development (Z. Chojnicki, T. Czyż), the first experiences of regional policy after Poland's accession to the European Union (P. Churski, T. Stryjakiewicz), the transformation of towns and cities (J. Parysek), rural areas (B. Głębocki, A. Kołodziejczak) and large industrial enterprises (H. Rogacki), and finally the issue of transborder and inter-territorial co-operation of Polish communes and regions (T. Kaczmarek). Spis treści: TADEUSZ STRYJAKIEWICZ: Introduction ZBYSZKO CHOJNICKI, TERESA CZYŻ: The role of knowledge in the shaping of a knowledge-based economy and economic development of Poland: a regional approach PAWEŁ CHURSKI, TADEUSZ STRYJAKIEWICZ: New experiences of Polish regional policy in the first years of membership in the European Union JERZY J. PARYSEK: Processes affecting the development and transformation of towns in Central European states: the case of Poland BENICJUSZ GŁĘBOCKI: Changes in the agrarian structure of Poland in 1990-2002 ANNA KOŁODZIEJCZAK: Agriculture and the countryside in Poland: alternative scenarios of change HENRYK ROGALKI: Large industrial enterprises in Poland: changes in the regional pattern TOMASZ KACZMAREK: Transborder co-operation and inter-territorial partnership of Polish communes and regions
