Seven Interpretive Essays on Peruvian Reality - 2870498698

Seven Interpretive Essays on Peruvian Reality University of Texas Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Once again I repeat that I am not an impartial; objective critic. My judgments are nourished by my ideals, my sentiments, my passions. I have an avowed and resolute ambition: to assist in the creation of Peruvian socialism. I am far removed from the academic techniques of the university. -From the Author's Note Jose Carlos Mariategui was one of the leading South American social philosophers of the early twentieth century. He identified the future of Peru with the welfare of the Indian at a time when similar ideas were beginning to develop in Middle America and the Andean region. Generations of Peruvian and other Latin American social thinkers have been profoundly influenced by his writings. Seven Interpretive Essays on Peruvian Reality (Siete ensayos de interpretacion de la realidad peruana), first published in 1928, is Mariategui's major statement of his position and has gone into many editions, not only in Peru but also in other Latin American countries. The topics discussed in the essays-economic evolution, the problem of the Indian, the land problem, public education, the religious factor, regionalism and centralism, and the literary process-are in many respects as relevant today as when the book was written. Mariategui's thinking was strongly tinged with Marxism. Because contemporary sociology, anthropology, and economics have been influenced by Marxism much more in Latin America than in North America, it is important that North Americans become more aware of Mariategui's position and accord it its proper historical significance. Jorge Basadre, the distinguished Peruvian historian, in an introduction written especially for this translation, provides an account of Mariategui's life and describes the political and intellectual climate in which these essays were written.

Social Life of Things - 2826703846

Social Life of Things Cambridge University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The meaning that people attribute to things necessarily derives from human transactions and motivations, particularly from how those things are used and circulated. The contributors to this volume examine how things are sold and traded in a variety of social and cultural settings, both present and past. Focusing on culturally defined aspects of exchange and socially regulated processes of circulation, the essays illuminate the ways in which people find value in things and things give value to social relations. By looking at things as if they lead social lives, the authors provide a new way to understand how value is externalized and sought after. They discuss a wide range of goods - from oriental carpets to human relics - to reveal both that the underlying logic of everyday economic life is not so far removed from that which explains the circulation of exotica, and that the distinction between contemporary economics and simpler, more distant ones is less obvious than has been thought. As the editor argues in his introduction, beneath the seeming infinitude of human wants, and the apparent multiplicity of material forms, there in fact lie complex, but specific, social and political mechanisms that regulate taste, trade, and desire. Containing contributions from American and British social anthropologists and historians, the volume bridges the disciplines of social history, cultural anthropology, and economics, and marks a major step in our understanding of the cultural basis of economic life and the sociology of culture. It will appeal to anthropologists, social historians, economists, archaeologists, and historians of art.

City of Modernity. Lódz Harrassowitz

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

City of Modernity consists of 33 essays about Lódz, a city that started out as an agricultural settlement and became a metropolis within a single generation, all thanks to technological progress. Its population of 767 in 1820, it had grown to 767,000 by 1939. At the turn of the century, it emblematized modernization and industrialization, and was a symbol of industrial-era modernity. It was often compared to Manchester and its truly American pace of development was admired. The city's rapid economic career was impressive, but it also exacted a high social cost. The authors, representing a variety of fields (history, sociology, literary, theatre and film studies, cultural anthropology) analyze many aspects of Lódz's economic, social and cultural life before the outbreak of World War II. In reference to Lódz modernism, they explore notions like modernity, metropolitanism and peripherality, multi-culturalism and multi-ethnicity (Lódz was a labor destination for German settlers, Polish peasants, Jews, as well as newcomers from the Russian interior), the phenomenon of workers' movements which peaked during the revolution of 1905, and the expansion of mass entertainment. The publication also looks at issues linked to urban infrastructure, animators of cultural life, and the emergence of new religious, political, and emancipation movements.

Palestine Israel & the Politics of Popular Culture Duke University Press

Inne 1

This important volume rethinks the traditional parameters of Middle East studies and the dominant trends in scholarship on Israel and Palestine by focusing on popular culture?from the internet to music videos, tourism to advertising, comics to cafĂŠ culture. The essays in this collection challenge the idea that the production and consumption of culture is peripheral to history and politics. They demonstrate that attention to popular culture yields deeper and more nuanced accounts of politics and power. Further, the contributors consider Israel and Palestine not as discrete national entities but rather in relation to one another, as mutually constituted within regional and global political, economic, and cultural processes. Scholars from the fields of history, sociology, ethnomusicology, literary studies, anthropology, and political science look at how narratives of occupation and resistance circulate in popular culture in Israel and the occupied territories and in the broader regional and global spheres. They contemplate Israeli films of the 1980s and 1990s, Palestinian underground music, Israeli tourism to Palestinian villages, the rendering of the conflict in journalist Joe Sacco's graphic novel Palestine, urban life in nineteenth-century Jerusalem, the use of the internet in Palestinian refugee camps, and more. Together, these essays signal broader approaches and new conceptual paradigms within which the cultural politics of Palestine and Israel might be understood. This volume is the first to address the social ramifications of music's behaviorally manipulative effects, its morally questionable uses and control mechanisms, and its economic and artistic regulation through commercialization, thus highlighting not only music's diverse uses at the social level but also the ever-fragile relationship between aesthetics and morality. This landmark publication in the study of children and childhood signals the recognition of a significant area of study. Childhood Studies has both matured and experienced remarkable diversification over the past twenty-five years and this Handbook, an essential guide to the subject, is an indication that childhood has become a legitimate field of study in its own right. With contributions from an international line-up of leading scholars, from across a range of disciplines including sociology, social policy, social work, education, cultural studies, history, geography and law, this collection of specially-commissioned essays maps the field whilst setting a research agenda for future study. Divided into six parts - concepts; historical and socio-economic contexts; generational relations; everyday lives; practice and participation; children's rights and place in the world - this substantive reference work charts how childhood studies has moved beyond developmental issues to focus on broader issues of children in society, as actors and agents, and as subjects of policy intervention.Providing a comprehensive overview of key theoretical and empirical work in the field, this Handbook, now available in paperback, will be an indispensable reference resource for all those concerned with the study of children and childhood.

Production Studies Taylor & Francis Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Production Studies is a landmark collection that closely examines the texts, institutions, and practices of media industries in order to allow media studies students and scholars to think more precisely and holistically about media production as a cultural activity. The book is comprised of all new essays exploring the cultures, social organization, work practices, and belief systems of media practitioners. Each section results from a combination of situated fieldwork, empirical or from-the-ground-up studies, and critical analysis. Individual chapters draw upon a diverse array of earlier production studies across a range of ethnographic, sociological, critical, material, and political-economic methodologies as each author presents their own contemporary research.§§The contributors include distinguished and new scholars from a range of academic disciplines - Film and Media Studies, Communication, Sociology, and Anthropology. The authors and editors are especially interested in how the cultural activities of production workers fit within and animate the new realities of a post-Fordist and neoliberal economy, flexible and outsourced labor practices, multimedia convergence, and multinational, corporate conglomeration.

Public Sex/Gay Space - 2875916210

Public Sex/Gay Space Columbia University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Male homosexual activity in public and semipublic locations is a central but seldom explored dimension of gay culture around the world. The majority of existing research emphasizes the impersonality of such erotic interaction and underscores the element of danger involved. While never denying the danger of anonymous public sex in the age of AIDS, the contributors to Public Sex/Gay Space go beyond narrow moralisms about the need to regulate unsafe sexual practices to discuss the significance of sex in public. William Leap has brought together contributions from such fields as anthropology, sociology, literary criticism, and history to reinvigorate the discussion on this issue, with twelve essays providing a more nuanced portrait of why public sexual activity is such an integral part of gay culture. The authors present rich ethnographic snapshots of male sex in public places--many drawn from interviews with participants or, in some instances, the authors' personal experiences.Contributors investigate a broad cultural spectrum of gay sexual space and activity: in a public park in contemporary Hanoi, at the beachfront community of New York's Fire Island, and in nineteenth-century Amsterdam, for example. They explore issues such as visibility and secrecy, as well as economic status and social class, and interrogate the historical trajectories through which certain locations come to be favored sites for sexual encounters. Together, they offer insight into the ways in which public sex calls into question the very line that divides "public" from "private."

Museum Highlights - 2877181127

Museum Highlights MIT Press Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Andrea Fraser's work, writes Pierre Bourdieu in his foreword to Museum Highlights, is able to "trigger a social mechanism, a sort of machine infernale whose operation causes the hidden truth of social reality to reveal itself." It often does this by incorporating and inhabiting the social role it sets out to critique -- as in a performance piece in which she leads a tour as a museum docent and describes the men's room in the same elevated language that she uses to describe seventeenth-century Dutch paintings. Influenced by the interdisciplinarity of postmodernism, Fraser's interventionist art draws on four primary artistic and intellectual frameworks -- institutional critique, with its site-specific examination of cultural context; performance; feminism, with its investigation of identity formation; and Bourdieu's reflexive sociology. Fraser's writings form an integral part of her artistic practice, and this collection of texts written between 1985 and 2003 -- including the performance script for the docent's tour that gives the book its title -- both documents and represents her work. The writings in Museum Highlights are arranged to reflect different aspects of Fraser's artistic practice. They include essays that trace the development of critical "artistic practice" as cultural resistance; performance scripts that explore art institutions and the public sphere; and texts that explore the ambivalent relationship of art to the economic and political interests of its time. The final piece, "Isn't This a Wonderful Place? (A Tour of a Tour of the Guggenheim Bilbao)," reflects on the role of museums in an era of globalization. Among the book's 30 illustrations are stills from performance pieces, some never before published.
