Powieści i opowiadania
So I was the 6787th person in Beijing wanting to act in the film and TV industry. There were 6786 young and beautiful, or ugly and old people before me trying to get a role. I felt the competition, but compared with 1.6 billion people in China, 6786 was only the population of my village. I felt an urge to conquer this new village.' Life as a film extra in Beijing might seem hard, but Fenfang - the spirited heroine of Xiaolu Guo's new novel - won't be defeated. She has travelled 1800 miles to seek her fortune in the city, and has no desire to return to the never-ending sweet potato fields back home. Determined to live a modern life, Fenfang works as a cleaner in the Young Pioneer's movie theatre, falls in love with unsuitable men and keeps her kitchen cupboard stocked with UFO instant noodles. As Fenfang might say, Heavenly bastard in the sky, isn't it about time I got my lucky break?

Mirror Fragments - Monika Osiecka
Książki & Multimedia > Książki
Opis - Monika Osiecka"s Mirror Fragments is a fascinating record of a woman"s experience, an artist"s self-reflection. It is an intimate diary composed of words, sculptures, and the author"s own photographs. Don"t be misled by the impression that the central focus of this unusual publication, this album, yet not album, is the image. Subtle nudes, female figures emerging out of stone, rugged abstract forms with mysterious sounding names like "Biała Marianna" (White Marianna). Don"t think of it as travel sketches, at the center of which are huge blocks of marble in Carrara. Or the stone door-frame of an exotic temple. Or words. Mirror Fragments is a journey of beholding. You can begin reading anywhere you please; the words compliment the images; the images take you to story lines recorded in poetic micro narratives; we discover motifs common to both in photographs brought back from sculpture symposiums or from expeditions to far-off places. Photographs of a pleated dress from Pietrasanta, which lies like the folds of the marble cliffs in Carrara, is linked in the artist"s vision with the rhythm of the gothic stairs in Wells Cathedral. "My life is fragments of a mirror, in each bit another world", she writes of herself. "All that holds them together is my looking." We follow this vision on every page of this beautifully edited book. Monika Osiecka reveals for us a private tale, woven from fragments: of the joys of creation, of a woman"s sensuality, and of the experience of motherhood. Of love and good-byes, the trauma of being hospitalized and the ecstasy of a journey with no destination. She writes in this artistic self-commentary, so rare in Polish art, "Creation is the one time of complete fulfillment that I know." The material of her creative works is mostly stone. The analogy, the sisterly contiguity of the artist?s material and experience is a feature of her entire ouvre. Discourses, Fragments, Handbook Oxford University Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
'About things that are within our power and those that are not.' Epictetus's Discourses have been the most widely read and influential of all writings of Stoic philosophy, from antiquity onwards. They set out the core ethical principles of Stoicism in a form designed to help people put them into practice and to use them as a basis for leading a good human life. Epictetus was a teacher, and a freed slave, whose discourses have a vivid informality, animated by anecdotes and dialogue. Forceful, direct, and challenging, their central message is that the basis of happiness is up to us, and that we all have the capacity, through sustained reflection and hard work, of achieving this goal. They still speak eloquently to modern readers seeking meaning in their own lives. This is the only complete modern translation of the Discourses, together with the Handbook or manual of key themes, and surviving fragments. Robin Hard's accurate and accessible translation is accompanied by Christopher Gill's full introduction and comprehensive notes. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

The Ancient Egyptian Book of Thoth II: Revised Transliteration and Translation, New Fragments, and Material for Future Study Harrassowitz
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
This two volume work (text and plates) is the continuation and supplement to the two volume editio princeps from 2005 (which has been reissued as a reprint*). With all four volumes, a comprehensive edition of all known fragments of the Book of Thoth is now available. Since the publication of the first edition, some 89 "new" fragments have been identified, which are edited in this work. Richard Jasnow and Karl-Theodor Zauzich have made considerable progress in the reconstruction of the Book of Thoth and gained a deeper understanding of the composition. New and alternative readings have been incorporated into this work as well as the interpretations of other scholars. A glossary contains digital facsimiles of all the Demotic and hieratic words in the Book of Thoth. The plate volume publishes digital hand-copies of all manuscript witnesses and photographic images of the 89 "new" fragments. The author's goal is to provide a firm basis for future research on the Book of Thoth.Structured as a dialogue between "master" and "disciple," the composition is associated with the House of Life, the intellectual center of the Egyptian temple. The Book of Thoth may be understood as an initiation text in which the master questions the disciple, who must prove himself worthy of entering the institution. The writer engages with the theology of Egyptian scribal practice; he thus covers many topics, such as sacred geography, the underworld, and animal knowledge.
