'You know how to win a battle, Hannibal; you do not know how to use the victory!' Livy's great history of Rome contains, in Books 21 to 30, the definitive ancient account of Hannibal's invasion of Italy in 218 BC, and the war he fought with the Romans over the following sixteen years. Livy describes the bloody siege of the Spanish city of Saguntum, Rome's ally, which sparked the war, and the Carthaginian leader's famous march with elephants over the Alps into Italy. Livy's gripping story-telling vividly conveys the drama of the great battles, the disastrous encounters at Trasimene and Cannae, and the final confrontation between Hannibal and the youthful Scipio Africanus. Individuals as well as events are brought powerfully to life, as the long course of the Second Punic War unfolds. This new translation captures the brilliance of Livy's style, and is accompanied by a fascinating introduction and notes. The complete Livy in English, available in five volumes from Oxford World's Classics. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

'If life could write, it would write like Tolstoy.' Isaac Babel Tolstoy's epic masterpiece intertwines the lives of private and public individuals during the time of the Napoleonic wars and the French invasion of Russia. The fortunes of the Rostovs and the Bolkonskys, of Pierre, Natasha, and Andrei, are intimately connected with the national history that is played out in parallel with their lives. Balls and soirees alternate with councils of war and the machinations of statesmen and generals, scenes of violent battles with everyday human passions in a work whose extraordinary imaginative power has never been surpassed. The prodigious cast of characters, both great and small, seem to act and move as if connected by threads of destiny as the novel relentlessly questions ideas of free will, fate, and providence. Yet Tolstoy's portrayal of marital relations and scenes of domesticity is as truthful and poignant as the grand themes that underlie them. In this revised and updated version of the definitive and highly acclaimed Maude translation, Tolstoy's genius and the power of his prose are made newly available to the contemporary reader.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. 'the glory of wealth and physical beauty is fluid and fragile; but virtue is held brilliant and eternal' The Roman historian Sallust lived through troubled times. He deplored the moral and political decline of the Republic, and in his two monographs he set out to exemplify the reasons for the years of civil strife. Catiline's Conspiracy is an account of the rebellion against the state led by the disaffected Catiline. For Sallust it was 'especially memorable because of the unprecedented nature of the crime and the danger it caused'. Rome's fight against the king of Numidia in The Jugurthine War is a graphic depiction of power struggles in Rome and brutal battles in Africa that eventually resulted in the capture of Jugurtha. Sallust's abrupt and distinctive style is the perfect vehicle for his moral urgency, bitter condemnation, and satirical cynicism. This new translation, which also includes Sallust's fragmentary Histories, captures his effects in an accessible English idiom, and provides a comprehensive introduction to his work as history and literature.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. " When Books Went to War winds up feeling like the bibliophile's equivalent of It's a Wonderful Life ." - Janet Maslin, New York Times "Whether or not you're a book lover, you'll be moved by the impeccably researched tale. Grade: A." - Entertainment Weekly "Thoroughly engaging, enlightening, and often uplifting . . . I was enthralled and moved." - Tim O'Brien When America entered World War II in 1941, we faced an enemy that had banned and burned over 100 million books and caused fearful citizens to hide or destroy many more. Outraged librarians launched a campaign to send free books to American troops and gathered 20 million hardcover donations. In 1943, the War Department and the publishing industry stepped in with an extraordinary program: 120 million small, lightweight paperbacks, for troops to carry in their pockets and their rucksacks, in every theater of war. Comprising 1,200 different titles of every imaginable type, these paperbacks were beloved by the troops and are still fondly remembered today. Soldiers read them while waiting to land at Normandy; in hellish trenches in the midst of battles in the Pacific; in field hospitals; and on long bombing flights. They wrote to the authors, many of whom responded to every letter. They helped rescue The Great Gatsby from obscurity. They made Betty Smith, author of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn , into a national icon. When Books Went to War is an inspiring story for history buffs and book lovers alike.§

Mao Zedong (also known as Mao Tse-tung) is regarded as one of the most controversial figures in modern world history. Having conquered the country, he ruled the People's Republic of China from its establishment as a Communist state in 1949 until the time of his death in 1976. Brilliant and ruthless, his legacy includes guerrilla warfare tactics, violent cultural revolutions, and enduring Communist propaganda. He was named one of the 100 most influential figures of the 20th century by Time Magazine.Eric Margolis, of the Huffington Post writes of Chairman Mao:"Mao was an accomplished poet, writer and historian, a profound thinker, and a superb military strategist. He crushed the US-backed Nationalist's 4.3-million strong armies in a series of titanic battles, forcing his rival, Chiang Kai-shek, to flee to Taiwan... The Great Helmsman united fractured, war-torn China, restoring its pride and self-confidence after two centuries of humiliation. Mao thwarted both Soviet and U.S. efforts to turn China into a client state, and built up China's military power... Mao's aides dared not tell him millions were starving. Red Emperor Mao was prodigal with his people's lives, and, according to aides who were close to him, was shockingly indifferent to their suffering. Mao horrified even brutal Soviet leaders by saying he was prepared to lose half his people to emerge victorious from a nuclear war...The second volume in this special collection contains three important lectures and essays by Chairman Mao dealing with guerrilla warfare:*Part 1 - On Guerrilla Warfare*Part 2 - Problems of Strategy in Guerrilla War against Japan*Part 3 - On Protracted WarExcerpt from "Collected Writings of Chairman Mao: Volume 2 - Guerrilla Warfare" by Mao Zedong.Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. In September 1812, Napoleon, in the course of swallowing all of Europe, invaded Russia at the head of a great army totaling several hundred thousand infantry, cavalry, and artillery. At that time, Russia was weak and her ill-prepared army was not concentrated. The most important phase of her strategy was the use made of Cossack cavalry and detachments of peasants to carry on guerrilla operations. After giving up Moscow, the Russians formed nine guerrilla divisions of about five hundred men each. These, and vast groups of organized peasants, carried on partisan warfare and continually harassed the French Army. When the French Army was withdrawing, cold and starving, Russian guerrillas blocked the way and, in combination with regular troops, carried out counterattacks on the French rear, pursuing and defeating them. The army of the heroic Napoleon was almost entirely annihilated, and the guerrillas captured many officers, men, cannon, and rifles. Though the victory was the result of various factors and depended largely on the activities of the regular army the function of the partisan groups was extremely important. The corrupt and poorly organized country that was Russia defeated and destroyed an army led by the most famous soldier of Europe and won the war in spite of the fact that her ability to organize guerrilla regimes was not fully developed. At times, guerrilla groups were hindered in their operations and the supply of equipment and arms was insufficient. If we use the Russian saying, it was a case of a battle between "the fist and the axe."

It remains a stroke of fortune that in the turbulent times of the 17th century with its numerous cultural and military upheavals the artistic depiction of human life took a similarly rapid and proliferous development. Never before in history had society in all its squalor and splendor been presented in so many pictures of outstanding artistic quality. At the end of the 16th century the Golden Age of Painting began to evolve especially in the Low Countries. Many contemporary paintings also show events from the Eighty Years War, the United Provinces' struggle for independence from Spain. However, an entire generation of artists also chose to paint events from the great European conflict which erupted at the same time: the Thirty Years War.Born in Antwerp, Pieter Snayers was a fairly typical representative of this generation of painters. From a military historian's point of view, his works are considered particularly authentic. Many of his paintings showing sieges betray meticulous care in the depiction of the cities and fortresses concerned. Snayers' topographical and analytical approach remains unsurpassed. Even his paintings of major battles (which rarely occurred) defy any form of profound criticism. Snayers' rendering of the everyday life of the common people involved is straightforward, graphic and occasionally dramatic. We are thus able to gain insight into the events of his time unimpeded by clichés and historic myth.Pieter Snayers' works are on display in numerous collections worldwide. With the help of his paintings, many of which are very large in format, this lavishly illustrated book will seek to relate the history of the conflicts depicted. Author Roland Sennewald has compiled a collection of more than 100 of Snayers' works from all over the world, creating an impressive testimony of his creative talent and relating the story of both the Eighty and Thirty Years Wars, and the times before and after.

All rights reserved.Above all, Marxists regard man's activity in production as the most fundamental practical activity, the determinant of all his other activities. Man's knowledge depends mainly on his activity in material production, through which he comes gradually to understand the phenomena, the properties and the laws of nature, and the relations between himself and nature; and through his activity in production he also gradually comes to understand, in varying degrees, certain relations that exist between man and man. None of this knowledge can be acquired apart from activity in production. In a classless society every person, as a member of society, joins in common effort with the other members, enters into definite relations of production with them and engages in production to meet man's material needs. In all class societies, the members of the different social classes also enter, in different ways, into definite relations of production and engage in production to meet their material needs. This is the primary source from which human knowledge develops.

All rights reserved.WE MUST ORGANIZE THE MASSES AND UNITE WITH THEMModern warfare is not a matter in which armies alone can determine victory or defeat. Especially in guerrilla combat, we must rely on the force of the popular masses, for it is only thus that we can have a guarantee of success. The support of the masses offers us great advantages as regards transport, assistance to wounded, intelligence, disruption of the enemy's position, etc. At the same time, the enemy can be put into an isolated position, thus further increasing our advantages. If, by misfortune, we are defeated, it will also be possible to escape or to find concealment. Consequently, we must not lightly give battle in places where the masses are not organized and linked to us. WE MUST NOT FEAR THE ENEMYWhen we see the enemy, simply because he has a weapon in his hands, we must not be frightened to death, like a rat who sees a cat. We must not be afraid of approaching him or infiltrating into his midst, in order to carry out sabotage. We are men; our enemies are also men; we are all men, so what should we fear? The fact that he has weapons? We can find a way to seize his weapons. All we are afraid of is getting killed by the enemy. But when we undergo the oppression of the enemy to such a point as this, how can anyone still fear death? And if we do not fear death, then what is there to fear about the enemy? So when we see the enemy, whether he is many or few, we must act as though he can satisfy our hunger, and immediately swallow him.

Magestorm Nexus

Gry fantasy

Magestorm is a new board game series that brings the role of magic in a fantasy battle to the highest levels, with players being able to control at the same time one mage and one army. Background The game is set in Aleen, the world of the Two Suns, where the forces of magic flow across the land and the seas, penetrating deeply under the mountains and hovering up over the winds. After millennia living in the Western Continent, the humans come back to Tys, the Old Continent, from across the Deep Sea, leaving their lands destroyed by a long and raging war, and they are not welcome anymore. The original peoples living there react to the invaders, starting a big clash. The battles among the different factions are fought in the shadow of mighty mages, which help their mortal allies with their incredible powers and spells while trying to achieve their personal goals. The Mages are ultra-powerful beings that with their abilities and their spells forge the destiny of the Magestorm universe. The powers of each mage are very different, and by choosing a different mage to play a certain battle, the game experience changes completely. Game system Magestorm is a scenario-based game, and each scenario is inspired to events from the history of the world of Aleen, describing a battle and the composition of the armies, the mages used, how to set up the battlefield, the duration of the game in rounds and victory conditions - conquering a number of objectives, passing through the opponent army with the minimum number of casualties, escorting a caravan through the battlefield, and so on. The 10 scenarios included in the basic set of Magestorm will feature growing difficult levels. The game is characterized by easy-to-learn game mechanics. Each player will be commanding his troops and casting his spells to help them during the battle. The armies are divided in units, composed by troops, represented on the battlefield by figures mounted on bases. Their characteristics and abilities are shown on troop cards, through icons and values. During the game, in the role of the mage, each player will cast spells using a special mage board that is used to keep track of the magical powers available to the mage. Every round a mage will have new magic energy at his disposal, represented by new power point tokens placed on the mage board, that he will be able to use later to cast his spells. Every mage has his personal way to magic and in the game this aspect is reflected by the mage board, which allows the mage/player to decide how to channel his magic powers and cast his spells. The units in each army are moved on the board using a system based on objective markers: each player will place objectives on the board, marking hexes which are a target for his units. The units, then, will advance towards their closest objective. When enemy units meet, a combat will occur. Players will compare their troop values, modified by terrain, spells and special powers, and roll dice to determine initiative and the success of attacks. Each round of battle is composed by two turns, one for each player. In each turn, the active player plays following four phases: Magic Phase, moving the power point tokens already on his mage board and generating new power points; Strategic Phase, casting strategic spells and using the strategic points at his disposal; Movement Phase, moving all his units in play; and Combat Phase, resolving eventual combats triggered in the previous phase. The winner will be the player that first completes the victory conditions of the scenario.
