Nowa, symfoniczna wersja albumu Quadrophenia, pierwotnie wydanego przez zespół The Who w 1973 r., została zorkiestrowana przez profesjonalną kompozytorkę, aranżerkę, autorkę piosenek i wreszcie piosenkarkę Rachel Fuller, prywatnie partnerkę Pete'a Townshenda. Album został nagrany dla wytwórni Deutsche Grammophon, a koncertowa premiera dzieła w wykonaniu Royal Philharmonic Orchestra oraz London Oriana Choir będzie miała miejsce latem w Royal Albert Hall. Projekt zapisuje najnowszy rozdział w trwającej całe życie kampanii Townshenda mającej na celu zerwanie ze stereotypem 3-minutowej piosenki popularnej i wprowadzenie muzyki rockowej na wyższy artystyczny poziom. Już w latach 60. Townshend zdefiniował ideę "opery rockowej" (Tommy), a Quadrophenia stanowi kolejny etap tego procesu. Wymyślona i napisana przez Townshenda w 1973 Quadrophenia doczekała się wersji filmowej, a następnie teatralnej, była też w całości wykonywana podczas ostatnich tras koncertowych zespołu The Who. Przez ostatnie trzy lata Townshend pracował bardzo intensywnie z Rachel Fuller nad zupełnie nowymi aranżacjami tego dzieła na orkiestrę, solistów i chór. To nowe wcielenie klasycznej opery rockowej zostało nagrane we wrześniu 2014 w legendarnych londyńskich Air Studios, a wykonawcami byli: Royal Philharmonic Orchestra pod dyrekcją Roberta Zieglera, popularny brytyjski tenor Alfie Boe oraz grający na elektrycznej gitarze i pojawiający się także w partiach wokalnych sam Townshend. Townshend ponownie wystąpi podczas światowej premiery swojego dzieła na żywo w Royal Albert Hall w Londynie, 5 lipca 2015 razem z RPO, Zieglerem, Boe'em i innymi zaproszonymi gwiazdami. Wielki gwiazdor rocka rozpoczyna tym projektem prace nad zaaranżowaniem na orkiestrę całej swojej muzyki, z myślą o przyszłych pokoleniach. Rachel Fuller, która przyszła na świat w roku wydania albumu Quadrophenia, przyznaje, że zetknęła się z albumem zespołu The Who dopiero sporo lat po spotkaniu Townshenda w nagraniowym studio w Londynie, podczas prób do trasy koncertowej zespołu The Who w 1996 r., kiedy pracowała z Ute Lemper. "Zakochałam się w tej muzyce od momentu, kiedy ją po raz pierwszy usłyszałam 10 lat temu. Zorkiestrowałam ten utwór z miłości do Pete'a. Ta praca była czystą przyjemnością, ponieważ dzieło jest bardzo orkiestrowe z natury, nawet w wersji rockowej, więc aranżacja orkiestrowa była łatwa. Starałam się zachować bardzo wiernie oryginalny zamysł kompozytora, ponieważ to on jest tu najważniejszy i chciałam uszanować jego pracę". Alfie Boe, który śpiewa partie pierwotnie wykonywane przez Rogera Daltreya, urodził sie również w 1973 roku, ale słuchał albumu Quadrophenia przez wiele lat. "Mam ten album we krwi. Wychowałem się na muzyce rockowej i zawsze fantazjowałem, że zostanę śpiewakiem rockowym, zanim otrzymałem wykształcenie operowe. Zawsze wydawało mi się, że śpiewak operowy może sprawdzić się w tego typu repertuarze. To trudniejsze do śpiewania od opery, ale bardzo emocjonujące. Muzyka jest pełna emocji, pozytywnych uczuć i siły, można ją porównać z symfoniami Beethovena czy Mozarta". Dyrygent Robert Ziegler wspomina jak słuchał zespołu The Who, kiedy był nastolatkiem w Los Angeles, potem spotkał Townshenda podczas pracy nad dokumentalną audycją radiową o producencie filmowym Kenie Russellu, który reżyserował film oparty na operze Tommy.
