Dictionary of German Biography v 9 Saur Verlag KG

Historia

The Dictionary of German Biography is the English-language version of the renowned Deutsche Biographische Enzyklopädie. It is a unique and comprehensive work containing biographies of some 56,000 people from the German-speaking world: covering individuals from Germany, Austria, Switzerland and other regions where German is or was spoken. Chronologically, the dictionary's coverage stretches all the way from the time of Charlemagne to the present day and includes only individuals whose life and works have come to an end. The Dictionary of German Biography was produced by a team of outstanding scholars headed by Editors in Chief Walther Killy and Rudolf Vierhaus. An advisory board made up of experts in individual fields ensured that the same rigorous standards were observed for all subject areas. More than 500 leading academics from around the world contributed articles for the Dictionary. This commitment to high academic standards has already made the Dictionary a standard work in Germany. Completed between 1995 and 2003, the 10 volume German version of the Dictionary of German Biography and its supplementary volumes provide the latest information in a unique, compact format, covering all persons from A to Z. It is the obvious choice for people wanting biographical information from a vast number of areas. Each entry opens with a concise biographical summary allowing the user to place the relevant individual immediately. These summaries consist of the person's surname (with all its variations), first name, Pseudonyms, maiden names and wrongly attributed names (where applicable), title, occupation and dates and places of birth and death. The articles themselves outline the most important events in the person's life, including details of education, significant encounters, career, family and friendships, associations, achievements, prizes and honours. For those wishing to study an individual in greater depth, the entries also contain bibliographical references to further literature on that person. The Dictionary of German Biography also contains approximately 1,000 extensive articles written specifically for this edition and signed by recognized experts on particularly significant people. The Dictionary of German Biography provides a wealth of fascinating information. For many it is an endless source of delight simply to browse from one entry to the next. Of course, all the world-famous Germans can be found here. Political leaders whose influence effected the world well beyond the bounds of modern-day Germany, such as Charlemagne, Frederick the Great, Bismarck and Hitler, are all covered in depth as are outstanding names from the world of science, such as Kepler, Copernicus and Einstein. You can find detailed articles on the great philosophers Kant, Hegel and Nietzsche, the composers Bach, Mozart and Wagner, writers such as Goethe, Kafka and Brecht, inventors such as Diesel and captains of industry such as Thyssen, Daimler and Krupp. The Dictionary of German Biography also contains numerous entries for people who despite great achievements remained relatively unknown or have since been forgotten. There are entries for Adolf Dassler, founder of the company Adidas, and Oskar Schindler, for example. All individuals covered in the Dictionary of German Biography, whether household names, or virtually forgotten people of earlier times, have one thing in common: they left their mark on an era and helped shape later developments. They are people who have influenced the past and present. The Dictionary of German Biography not only gives the latest information on the people we remember, it brings the past to life. The individual biographies have been put together to form a comprehensive history of German-speaking Europe. The Dictionary will therefore be of great interest to anyone who is interested in German history, culture and biographies. It will also be of interest to those specializing in one of the many subject areas in which the individual people covered here were influential well beyond the German-speaking world.

Auch als 'World Biographical Index' Online und auf CD-ROM lieferbar Comp. by Schmuck, Hilmar The microfiche edition of the Greek Biographical Archive (GBA) contains biographical articles from 90 reference books amounting to 148 volumes published between 1677 and 1996. For this Archive biographical entries from encyclopedias, manuals, calendars, almanacs, articles, and from newspapers and journals scattered around the world have been cumulated. Thus quick and easy access is facilitated to a wealth of information, much of which could previously only be found with great effort. The GBA provides a uniquely broad survey of the many areas of Greek life, with biographies of emperors, aristocrats, freedom fighters, patriarchs, metropolitans, clerics, military officers, poets, artists, scientists and merchants -- both the ruling class and the ordinary people of what was once a great empire have been brought together here. Individuals from Greece, Asia Minor, the Aegean islands and lower Italy for the Byzantine era, and the area of today?s Greece for the following period have been included. In its three volumes the Greek Biographical Index (GBI) offers an alphabetically arranged list of the 73,600 individuals included in the GBA from the 4th century up to the 1980s and thus gives access to the 91,380 biographical articles in the Archive. In addition to the main entries, the GBI contains cross-references that have been completed with biographical dates in order to better facilitate the use of this index. As the GBI is an Index to the Greek Biographical Archive, the user can tell at a glance whether or not any particular individual appears in the Archive, and if so, where the information is to be found. The Index specifies every individual?s name with his/her biographical dates and profession. References to the exact locations of the entries in the Greek Biographical Archive plus the abbreviated titles of the biographical sources used are also given. A key to the abbreviations used is provided. Primarily, the Greek Biographical Index serves as a register to the GBA. Thanks to its highly condensed form it greatly aids the search for and selection of individuals listed in the Archive. Furthermore, as a work in its own right, the Index represents a valuable tool for biographical research: information given by the Index allows the immediate identification of the person in question as well as his/her historical period. The Greek Biographical Index provides its user with direct access to the biographical source material; both the original works in printed form and the microfiches of the GBA. It therefore constitutes an essential reference work for anybody interested in the history of Greece and those areas previously a part of the Eastern Roman Empire, whether for private, genealogical or academic purposes.

Values Clarification in Counseling and Psychotherapy - 2878161999

Values Clarification in Counseling and Psychotherapy Oxford University Press Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This work meets a long-standing need in the helping professions by being the first and only comprehensive book devoted to these priority-defining and goal-setting values clarification strategies for counseling and psychotherapy by providing a clear description of what values clarification is and is not. The book demonstrates, with great precision and hundreds of clinical examples, how counselors and psychotherapists in many fields can ask good clarifying questions, and employ dozens of strategies with individuals, couples, families, and groups. Values clarification is perhaps best known for the many values clarification strategies that can be used with individuals and groups to explore a myriad of counseling topics. Values clarification is compared and contrasted to other approaches to counseling and psychotherapy, including person-centered, cognitive-behavioral, reality therapy-choice theory, existential, individual psychology, solution-focused, narrative, motivational interviewing, acceptance and commitment therapy, appreciative inquiry, life coaching, and positive psychology.Helping clients determine their priorities, set goals, make decisions, and take action to improve their lives are common tasks for virtually all helping professionals when engaging with clients. This is the process known as "values clarification" (or "Values Clarification"). While counselors and psychotherapists widely practice values clarification-some knowingly, others unaware-they typically do so with a limited understanding of its theory, methods and various applications. The book illustrates extensively how strategies can be carried out in individual counseling and psychotherapy, group counseling and psychotherapy, and psychoeducational work, whatever the subject or topic. The examples throughout the text are often grouped around more specific applications for marriage and family counseling, career counseling, substance abuse and recovery counseling, geriatric counseling, grief counseling, pastoral counseling, financial counseling, school counseling, rehabilitation counseling, counselor/clinical education and supervision, health counseling and personal growth.

Addiction as an Attachment Disorder - 2867104077

Addiction as an Attachment Disorder Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

From the Foreword: "Addiction is a disorder in self-regulation. Individuals who become dependent on addictive substances cannot regulate their emotions, self-care, self-esteem, and relationships. In this monumental and illuminating text Philip Flores covers all the reasons why this is so. But it is the domain of interpersonal relations that he makes clear why individuals susceptible to substance use disorders (SUDs) are especially vulnerable. His emphasis on addiction as an attachment disorder is principally important because he provides extensive scholarly and clinical insights as to why certain vulnerable individuals so desperately need to substitute chemical solutions and connections for human ones. The strength of Flores's paradigm of addiction as an attachment disorder is that it is a theory that effectively and wisely guides treatment, but at the same time, when properly implemented or practiced, the treatment resonates with and further enhances the theory.Flores's work here is an extraordinary one because, in parsimonious and clear language, he makes a major contribution to the literature and practice of effective psychotherapy in general and effective psychotherapy for the addictions in particular. He fills in all the gaps between theory and practice covering wide and ranging issues of what practice and empirical findings have to teach about the critical ingredients of AA, group therapy, and individual psychotherapy. This is a job well done because it helps students and experienced clinicians alike to always be mindful of how they bring their humanity to the distress and suffering of others. His theory of addiction as an attachment disorder makes it particularly clear how especially important this is for those suffering with addictive disorders. " -Edward J. In 2002, the Tourette Syndrome Association formed the TS Behavioral Sciences Consortium (BSC). The charge of the BSC was to develop and test nonpharmacological treatment options for individuals, both children and adults with Tourette Syndrome. This manual is the result of their work, and represents the most scientifically effective behavioral treatment for Tourette Syndrome available today. The treatment program uses Habit Reversal Training (HRT) for children and adults with chronic tic disorder. Individual treatment is based at its core on awareness training, the development of a specific competing response for each tic, and the use of functionally-based strategies for the elimination of tic-exacerbating antecedent and consequent variables. In addition, individual treatment includes techniques designed to enhance patient compliance, including social support and an inconvenience review, as well as scheduled time for the therapist and client to discuss areas of functioning that individuals with TS may find difficult, such as social/familial difficulties and disruptive anger/rage behavior. Each week, clients are given homework assignments, to be done 4-5 times per week, consisting of 20 to 30 minutes of awareness and competing response training to tics addressed in session. The client will be encouraged to keep tally marks to monitor tic behavior. Home-based monitoring and competing response training are reviewed at each session. All homework assignments will be available in this companion workbook.

Cognition in the Wild - 2862643383

Cognition in the Wild MIT Press Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Edwin Hutchins combines his background as an anthropologist and an open ocean racing sailor and navigator in this account of how anthropological methods can be combined with cognitive theory to produce a new reading of cognitive science. His theoretical insights are grounded in an extended analysis of ship navigation -- its computational basis, its historical roots, its social organization, and the details of its implementation in actual practice aboard large ships. The result is an unusual interdisciplinary approach to cognition in culturally constituted activities outside the laboratory -- "in the wild." Hutchins examines a set of phenomena that have fallen in the cracks between the established disciplines of psychology and anthropology, bringing to light a new set of relationships between culture and cognition. The standard view is that culture affects the cognition of individuals. Hutchins argues instead that cultural activity systems have cognitive properties of their own that are different from the cognitive properties of the individuals who participate in them. Each action for bringing a large naval vessel into port, for example, is informed by culture: the navigation team can be seen as a cognitive and computational system. Introducing Navy life and work on the bridge, Hutchins makes a clear distinction between the cognitive properties of an individual and the cognitive properties of a system. In striking contrast to the usual laboratory tasks of research in cognitive science, he applies the principal metaphor of cognitive science -- cognition as computation (adopting David Marr's paradigm) -- to the navigation task. After comparing modern Western navigation with the method practiced in Micronesia, Hutchins explores the computational and cognitive properties of systems that are larger than an individual. He then turns to an analysis of learning or change in the organization of cognitive systems at several scales. Hutchins's conclusion illustrates the costs of ignoring the cultural nature of cognition, pointing to the ways in which contemporary cognitive science can be transformed by new meanings and interpretations.
