US Foreign Policy and the Iranian Revolution Palgrave Macmillan

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book provides a fresh perspective on the origins of the confrontation between the US and Iran. It demonstrates that, contrary to the claims of Iran's leaders, there was no instinctive American hostility towards the Revolution, and explains why many assumptions guiding US policy were inappropriate for dealing with the new reality in Iran.

Since 1979, the Islamic Republic of Iran has managed§to consolidate and centralize its power, cement its§authority over the domestic populace, and exercise§increasing influence in the Middle East and beyond;§all this amidst an ever growing population and§escalating economic problems. Yet, the government of§Iran has been able to maintain internal political§control while pursuing a more assertive foreign§policy abroad. Economic sanctions, international§isolation, and strict containment policies have§apparently had little effect in weakening the state.§So, what factors have contributed to the Iranian§state s resilience to sustain itself through times of§political and economic shock? This timely work§examines the scale of political, economic and social§impacts oil-led economic development has had in the§Iranian rentier state. It provides a detailed§theoretical framework for discussing the subject,§comprehensive analysis of Iran s socio-economic and§political developments, and key internal and§exogenous factors that influence state§stability/instability. This book will not only be of§interest to Iran specialists, but also to scholars of§political science, economics, and int. relations.

For Boyle (international law, U. of Illinois-Champaign), the "War on Terror" is little more than a pretext for the expanded imperialist foreign policy of the United States, a policy characterized by a marked flouting of international law and a possibly inevitable slide into a Third World War. Beginning his narrative with a discussion of the U.S.- engineered coup d'ĂŠtat against the democratically elected Iranian leader Mohammed Mossadegh in 1959, he examines U.S. foreign policy towards the Middle East, largely through a legalistic lens honed over years of crafting legal petitions seeking to hold U.S. leaders accountable for their international crimes. He spends most of the work looking at the U.S. wars against Iraq, including the U.S-crafted sanctions blamed for over half a million Iraqi children dead over ten years, and concludes with a "guide to impeaching George W. Bush

History of Ancient Persia - The Achaemenid Empire John Wiley and Sons Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

An innovative approach to the history of the First Persian Empire, offering an accessible historical narrative for students and general readers alikeA History of the Achaemenid Empire considers archaeological and written sources to provide an expansive, source-based introduction to the diverse and culturally rich world of ancient Achaemenid Persia. Assuming no prior background, this accessible textbook follows the dynastic line from the establishment and expansion of the empire under the early Achaemenid kings to its collapse in 330 BCE. The text integrates the latest research, key primary sources, and archaeological data to offer readers deep insights into the empire, its kings, and its people.Chronologically organized chapters contain written, archaeological, and visual sources that highlight key learning points, stimulate discussion, and encourage readers to evaluate specific pieces of evidence. Throughout the text, author Maria Brosius emphasizes the necessity to critically assess Greek sources--highlighting how their narrative of Achaemenid political history often depicted stereotypical images of the Persians rather than historical reality. Topics include the establishment of empire under Cyrus the Great, Greek-Persian relations, the creation of a Persian ruling class, the bureaucracy and operation of the empire, Persian diplomacy and foreign policy, and the reign of Darius III. This innovative textbook:* Offers a unique approach to Achaemenid history, considering both archaeological and literary sources* Places primary Persian and Near Eastern sources in their cultural, political, and historical context* Examines material rarely covered in non-specialist texts, such as royal inscriptions, Aramaic documents, and recent archaeological finds* Features a comprehensive introduction to Achaemenid geography, Greek historiography, and modern scholarship on the Persian WarPart of the acclaimed Blackwell History of the Ancient World series, A History of the Achaemenid Empire is a perfect primary textbook for courses in Ancient History, Near Eastern Studies, and Classical Civilizations, as well as an invaluable resource for general readers with interest in the history of empires, particularly the first Persian empire or Iranian civilization.

Political Economy of Sanctions: Resilience and Transformation in Russia and Iran - 2871793288

Political Economy of Sanctions: Resilience and Transformation in Russia and Iran Springer International Publishing AG

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book presents a comparative analysis of Russia and Iran under sanctions. The use of sanctions in international political economy has increased dramatically in recent years. Sanctions have now become one of the most important instruments of U.S. foreign policy. Whilst the growing literature on sanctions has focused primarily on their effectiveness, much less attention has been paid to the ways in which sanctions have transformed target societies and states. Notwithstanding the relentless enactment of sanctions, Russia and Iran have become more self-reliant, less democratic, and have taken a more aggressive posture towards the West. Both states gradually adopted Hobbesian type of governance based on power centralisation, para-constitutional reformation, economic diversification and optimisation, human resource development, and cadre formation. This book explores the mechanisms by which sanctions operate by developing a novel Welfare State Regime approach (WSR) that combines welfare state functionality with institutional, economic, and cultural structural dimensions. The book distinguishes such mechanisms throughout the comparative analysis of socio-economic processes that evolve in Russia and Iran. Despite cultural differences, Russia and Iran reveal important structural, political, and economic commonalities. Although the Russian and Iranian WSRs have been strengthened in response to sanctions, the contradictory nature of CHMs might significantly constrain further consolidation. What are these contradictions? What are their strengths and weaknesses?
