Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... 'Only with the greatest of simplifications, for the sake of convenience, can we say Africa. In reality, except as a geographical term, Africa doesn't exist'. Ryszard Kapuscinski has been writing about the people of Africa throughout his career. In a study that avoids the official routes, palaces and big politics, he sets out to create an account of post-colonial Africa seen at once as a whole and as a location that wholly defies generalised explanations. It is both a sustained meditation on the mosaic of peoples and practises we call 'Africa', and an impassioned attempt to come to terms with humanity itself as it struggles to escape from foreign domination, from the intoxications of freedom, from war and from politics as theft. The Beginning: Collision, Ghana 1958 More than anything, one is struck by the light. Light everywhere. Brightness everywhere. Everywhere, the sun. Just yesterday, an autumnal London was drenched in rain. The airplane drenched in rain. A cold, wind, darkness. But here, from the morning

Letter from America Penguin

Powieści i opowiadania

When Alistair Cooke retired in March 2004 and then died a few weeks later, he was acclaimed by many as one of the greatest broadcasters of all time. His Letters from America, which began in 1946 and continued uninterrupted every week until early 2004, kept the world in touch with what was happening in Cooke's wry, liberal and humane style. This selection, made largely by Cooke himself and supplemented by his literary executor, gives us the very best of these legendary broadcasts. Over half have never appeared in print before. It is a remarkable portrait of a continent - and a man. Fred Astaire 26 June 1987 Movie stars don't make it. Nor statesmen. Not Prime Ministers, or dictators unless they die in office. Not even a world-famous rock star, unless he's assassinated. But last Monday, none of the three national television networks hesitated about the story that would lead the evening news. On millions of little screens in this country and I don't doubt in many other countries around the world, the first shots were of an imp, a graceful wraith, a firefly in impeccable white tie and tails. And for much longer than the lead story usually runs, for a full five minutes on NBC, we were given a loving retrospective of the dead man, ending with the firm declaration by Nureyev that 'He was not just the best ballroom dancer, or tap dancer, he was simply the greatest, most imaginative, dancer of our time.' And the newsmen were right to remind us of the immortal comment of the Hollywood mogul, who, with the no-nonsense directness of an expert, reported on Fred Astaire's first film test: 'Has enormous ears, can't act, can't sing, dances a little.' That Hollywood mogul, long gone, spent his life ducking round corners, to avoid being identified as the oaf who looked in the sky and never saw the brightest star. However, that expert opinion was, as the lawyers say, controlling at the time and in Astaire's first movies, there was no thought of allowing him to act or sing. But not for long. And thanks to the invention of television, and the need to fill vast stretches of the afternoon and night with old movies, it has been possible for my daughter, for instance, to claim Fred Astaire as her favourite film star from the evidence of all the movies he made fifteen, ten, five, three years before she was born. When I got the news on Monday evening here, and realized with immediate professional satisfaction that the BBC had smartly on hand a musical obituary tribute to him I put together eight years ago, I couldn't help recalling the casual, comic way this and similar radio obituaries came about. I was in London at the end of 1979, and Richard Rodgers - one of the two or three greatest of American songwriters - had just died, I believe on New Year's Eve or the night before. Britons, by then, were getting accustomed, without pain, to making what used to be a two-day Christmas holiday into a ten-day much-needed rest. For all laborious research purposes, the BBC was shut up. And there was no retrospective programme on the life and music of Richard Rodgers in the BBC's archives. Of course, in a gramophone library that looks like an annex to the Pentagon, there were hundreds, perhaps thousands, of recordings of his songs. The SOS went out to a writer, a producer, and - I presume - a man who had the key to the gramophone library. The silent place was unlocked, and the three of them laboured through the day to put together an hour's tribute to Richard Rodgers. It was done. It was competent enough, but rushed to an impossible deadline. This hasty improvisation happened just when my own music producer and I, who had enjoyed working together for six years or so on American popular music, were wondering what we could offer next. We'd done a sketch history of jazz, through individuals. We'd gone through all the popular music of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, and were stumped for a new series, at which point I asked if we mightn't go and talk to the head of the channel, network or whatever. We went in, and the genial boss asked me what we had in mind. 'A morgue,' I said. A what? 'Where', I asked, 'is your morgue?' He was not familiar with the word, a newspaper term. 'Well,' I said, 'all newspapers have them.' 'How d'you mean?' 'If, I explained, 'Mrs Thatcher died tonight and you woke up and read a two-sentence obituary, you'd be rightly outraged. But if you saw a two-page obituary, you'd take it for granted. When d'you suppose it was written?' 'That's right,' he said thoughtfully. What I was proposing was a morgue of the Americans eminent in popular music and jazz, so they'd not get caught short again. A splendid idea, the man said; pick your stars. We made a list and were commissioned to return to America and finish all of them. Naturally, we looked at a calendar, and birthdates of Hoagy Carmichael, Earl Hines, Harold Arlen, Ethel Merman, Stephane Grappelli, Ella Fitzgerald. But then, in a spasm of panic, we thought of two giants - if the word can be used about two comparative midgets: Irving Berlin and Fred Astaire. Berlin was then 91. And Fred Astaire was just crowding 80. The boss man, to whom the idea of a morgue had been, only a few minutes before, quaint if not morbid, wondered what we were waiting for. Better get busy, at once, on Berlin and then on Astaire. I remember doing the Astaire obit, then and there, while I was still in London. Meanwhile, we'd simply pray every night that the Lord would keep Irving Berlin breathing till I could get home and get busy. I remember being picked up in a car by a charming young girl to get to the BBC and record my Astaire narration - there wasn't a moment to lose. She asked me, in the car, what the script was that I was clutching. 'It's an obituary', I said, 'of Fred Astaire.' 'Fred Astaire,' she shrieked, 'dead?' and almost swerved into a bus. 'Of course, he's not dead,' I said, 'but he's going to be one day.' She, too, was new to the institution of a morgue. I recalled that when I was a correspondent for a British paper in the United States, and when for example. Dean Acheson was appointed Secretary of State, the first cable I had from my editor said, 'Welcome Acheson obituary soonest.' How ghoulish, she said. I imagine that to two generations at least, it's assumed that Fred Astaire, this slim, pop-eyed newcomer to Hollywood who couldn't act, couldn't sing, danced a little, only made a fool of the mogul through the movies he made, with Ginger Rogers, in the mid- and late 1930s. But long before then, from the mid-1920s on, he was already an incomparable star - as a dancer - to theatre audiences both in New York and in London. Perhaps more in London than anywhere, certainly in the 1920s, with the early Gershwin hits, Funny Face and Lady Be Good, and lastly, in 1933, in Cole Porter's Gay Divorce (which was the title of the theatre show; Hollywood would not then allow so shocking a title and called the movie version, The Gay Divorcee). Of all the thousands of words that have been written this week, and will be written, there is a passage I went back to on Tuesday night which, I think, as well as anything I know, sums up Astaire's overall appeal - the appeal that takes in but transcends one's admiration for his dancing and for his inimitably intimate singing style. This was written in November 1933, by a theatre critic who had so little feel for dancing that he marvelled why London should go on about 'Mr Astaire's doing well enough what the Tiller Girls at Blackpool do superbly'. The critic, the writer, was James Agate, the irascible, dogmatic, opinionated but brilliant journalist, and I believe the best critic of acting we have had this century. He is writing his review of Gay Divorce, after declaring yet again his contempt for musical comedy as an entertainment for idiots, deploring the play's plot and the acting and hoping 'Micawberishly, for something to turn up'. 'Presently,' he wrote, 'Mr Fred Astaire obliged, and there is really no more to be said.' Except

The Very Best Of - Fleetwood Mac (Płyta CD)

Książki & Multimedia > Muzyka

Opis - Wznowienie multiplatynowej kompilacji najważniejszych piosenek z repertuaru genialnego zespołu Fleetwood Mac. Po raz pierwszy składanka "The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac" ukazała się w 2002 roku i w założeniu miała przygotować grunt pod promocję studyjnego krążka "Say You Will". "The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac" to dwa krążki, na których zebrano 36 piosenek z bogatego dorobku zespołu, począwszy od 1975 roku. Czyli z czasów, gdy Fleetwood Mac odnieśli gigantyczny sukces komercyjny na świecie. Atrakcyjność składanki podnoszą zamieszczone na niej wcześniej niepublikowane piosenki, jak "Silver Springs", "Go Insane", jak również remiksy "Rhiannon" oraz "Sisters Of The Moon". W USA kompilacja "The Very Best Of Fleetwood Mac" spędziła na "Billboardzie" aż 42 tygodnie, pokrywając się platyną. Cztery razy osiągnęła ten kolor w Wielkiej Brytanii i aż siedmiokrotnie w Australii. Spis utworów:CD 1Strona 11. Monday Morning (Remastered LP Version)2. Dreams (Remastered LP Version)3. Grandmaster Repertoire 10 - The Tarrasch Defence by Nikolaos Ntirlis Jacob Aagaard (miękka okładka)

Szachy > Debiuty

Wersja językowa książki - angielska. Miękka okładka.  The Tarrasch Defence arises after 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c5 and leads to dynamic play. Based on the variation 9.Bg5 c4, Ntirlis and Aagaard radically change the theoretical landscape for this classic opening, with analysis checked many times over and an ocean of new ideas.Nikolaos Ntirlis is a computer specialist and successful trainer from Greece.GM Jacob Aagaard has won the Guardian, ECF and ChessCafe book of the year awards, as well as many international tournaments. This is his first opening book for 8 years.ISBN 978-1-906552-91-6  - 352 pages - Published 9 December 2011Reviews"Books of this nature are not just about authors doing a good job of collating the material and checking on their computer to avoid missing anything obvious. The authors go beyond the routine. They take the time and make the effort to go just that litle bit further, that little bit deeper. They develop the confidence to challenge the accepted view and supply the analytical proof to present their case with conviction. Boris Avrukh started the ball rolling, and now every one of the Grandmaster Repertoire series authors just has to keep up the highest standards...Many players (I'm thinking about myself!) are a bit touchy about accepting an isolated pawn with Black, but if they get beyond their prejudice they'll find this to be a worthy addition to the best series in chess literature. Put it on the shopping list." GM Glenn Flear , New in Chess "Most opening books are a collection of existing knowledge and a few extra ideas in critical positions. This is not the case with Jacob Aagaard#8217;s and Nikolaos Ntirlis#8217; (called Nikos) new book on the Tarrasch Defence in the Queen#8217;s Gambit. The book is the result of a large piece of research where the two authors have succeeded in turning completely new pages in opening theory. Before The Tarrasch Defence was published the opening was considered dubious, but now that it is here, all super-GMs have been recalled to the laboratory. All main lines have been repaired, including those no one knew were broken. Have a look: 1.d4 d5 2.c4 e6 3.Nc3 c5 4.cxd5 exd5 5.Nf3 Nc6 6.dxc5! This line has always been considered completely harmless, but it is not and is handled over 37 pages! (Don#8217;t fear

The book is ground breaking and sets new standards for the future of opening books." GM Sune Berg Hansen  "As usual with Quality Chess books, production values are high and the paper is of an excellent standard. The authors have geuinely tried to unearth new possibilities and overturn existing theory and it will be interesting to see if the Tarrasch Defence enjoys a revival in the near future." Sean Marsh , Chess Monthly "The two authors have done an outstanding job of not only explaining the basic themes and plans that are typical of this opening but also extensively analyzing the theory in detail, offering many important improvements. This book is an important contribution to opening theory and is highly recommended, without reservation." IM John Donaldson  (full review) "The authors invested an enormous amount of time. The amount of novelties and really astonishing ideas presented here can only mean that they invested hundreds of hours to make this an interesting and really fighting choice." IM Christof Sielecki  (full review) "The book is primarily written as a repertoire for Black, but, just as with the other titles in the Grandmaster Repertoire series, White will also benefit from studying the recommendations. The authors take the theory of this opening several years into the future with their countless improvements over existing theory and analysis, including several very important new ideas for White...Anyone playing the Tarrasch as black on a serious level, or potentially facing it as white should consider this book a must buy." Carsten Hansen , ChessCafe (full review) "The two authors... present so many fresh and fascinating ideas in this old opening that it's impossible to put down. It's also a very objective and sensible book, in which the old opening is both treated with respect and is challenged to defend itself against computer-age scrutiny and rigour.I could go on and on about the many beautiful variations in this book, but the truth is that it is crammed with fantastic stuff - really too much to mention in one review. So let me just say that the authors treat the ever-important Timman Variation (9.dxc5 Bxc5 10.Bg5 d4 11.Bxf6 Qxf6 12.Nd5) with due adoration and skepticism (I've always felt the line to be both overestimated and underestimated at the same time!). Here, too, they improve existing theory as they go along in many crucial lines." Arne Moll , Chess Vibes (full review)

Ramayana Book One NEW YORK UNIVERSITY PRESS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

'The books line up on my shelf like bright Bodhisattvas ready to take tough questions or keep quiet company. They stake out a vast territory, with works from two millennia in multiple genres: aphorism, lyric, epic, theater, and romance' - Willis G. Regier, "The Chronicle Review". 'No effort has been spared to make these little volumes as attractive as possible to readers: the paper is of high quality, the typesetting immaculate. The founders of the series are John and Jennifer Clay, and Sanskritists can only thank them for an initiative intended to make the classics of an ancient Indian language accessible to a modern international audience' "The Times Higher Education Supplement". '"The Clay Sanskrit Library" represents one of the most admirable publishing projects now afoot...Anyone who loves the look and feel and heft of books will delight in these elegant little volumes' - "New Criterion". 'Published in the geek-chic format' - "BookForum". 'Very few collections of Sanskrit deep enough for research are housed anywhere in North America. Now, twenty-five hundred years after the death of Shakyamuni Buddha, the ambitious "Clay Sanskrit Library" may remedy this state of affairs' - "Tricycle". 'Now an ambitious new publishing project, the "Clay Sanskrit Library" brings together leading Sanskrit translators and scholars of Indology from around the world to celebrate in translating the beauty and range of classical Sanskrit literature...Published as smart green hardbacks that are small enough to fit into a jeans pocket, the volumes are meant to satisfy both the scholar and the lay reader. Each volume has a transliteration of the original Sanskrit text on the left-hand page and an English translation on the right, as also a helpful introduction and notes. Alongside definitive translations of the great Indian epics - 30 or so volumes will be devoted to the "Mahabharat" itself - "Clay Sanskrit Library" makes available to the English-speaking reader many other delights: The earthy verse of Bhartrihari, the pungent satire of Jayanta Bhatta and the roving narratives of Dandin, among others. All these writers belong properly not just to Indian literature, but to world literature' - "LiveMint"."The Clay Sanskrit Library" has recently set out to change the scene by making available well-translated dual-language (English and Sanskrit) editions of popular Sanskritic texts for the public' - "Namarupa". 'By any measure the "Ramayana" of Valmiki is one of the great epic poems of world literature...Now the New York University Press is republishing the translations, without notes and with minimal introductions, in more accessible and less expensive editions, as part of the "Clay Sanskrit Library". So far the translators have been eminently successful' - "The New York Sun" [Refers to the nine volumes of the "Ramayana"]. Rama, the crown prince of the City of Ayodhya, is a model son and warrior. He is sent by his father the king to rescue a sage from persecution by demons, but must first kill a fearsome ogress. That done, he drives out the demons, restores peace, and attends a tournament in the neighboring city of Mithila; here he bends the bow that no other warrior can handle, winning the prize and the hand of Sita, the princess of Mithila.Valmiki's "Ramayana" is one of the two great national epics of India, the source revered throughout South Asia as the original account of the career of Rama, ideal man and incarnation of the great God Vishnu. The first book, "Boyhood," introduces the young hero Rama and sets the scene for the adventures ahead. It begins with a fascinating excursus on the origins and function of poetry itself. It is co-published by New York University Press and the JJC Foundation.

Medical Statistics Made Clear Royal Society of Medicine Press

Medycyna > English Division

There is no need to be wary of medical statistics with this book at your side. It is important that clinicians have a basic understanding of statistics if they are to fully understand the peer reviewed literature emerging from the field of evidence-based medicine. This book clearly explains commonly-used statistical techniques to aid understanding of published literature, describing the key concepts without bombarding the reader with mathematical formulae. As an introductory text, it covers a great deal of ground in concise fashion and makes reference to the majority of statistical methods that are likely to be encountered. It is a considerable challenge to cover such a large number of topics in a book of this size... the author has succeeded. -- Journal of Telemedicine and Telecare, 2003 This is a useful little book for the shelf, and you will soon find yourself thumbing through it. -- Bandolier An excellent introduction to the dark art of statistical analysis and also a very good 'jargon-buster'. Unlike many textbooks on statistics, this book avoids the use of mathematical equations, and so it is a very useful means of introducing non-mathematical people to the ideas behind common statistical processes. -- Current Medical Research Opinion This is a sound textbook which provides a comprehensive overview of medical statistics... -- Dr Avril Drummond, British Journal of Occupational Therapy, July 2003 66 (7) This book is short, clear and competently written and should be of great value not only to people engaged in research, but for everyone who wants to check for themselves whether what technical paper asserts in its conclusions is justified by the work that was done. -- Derek Steinberg, Psychiatrist, The British Holistic Medical Association The book is of great practical value for any geriatrician or gerontologist who has to test hypotheses, assessing therapeutic advances, and who evaluates the validity of collected data. The author's aim to write a practical guide concerning basic concepts of medical statistics is outstandingly achieved. -- Gerontology, 2004
