Everyday Life in the Ice Age - 2873777869

Everyday Life in the Ice Age Archaeopress

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Everyday Life in the Ice Age is the first attempt to present a truly complete, balanced and realistic picture of life during the last Ice Age, with its many problems and challenges, while dispelling many of the myths and inaccuracies about our early ancestors. One of the most common questions asked by visitors to Europe's decorated caves is 'What was life like for these people?' No previous book has ever managed to answer this question, and most studies of the period are aimed entirely at academics, tending to focus on tool-types rather than what the tools were used for. Women and children are almost invisible in these studies. The book examines all aspects of the lives of biologically modern humans in Europe from about 40,000 to 12,000 years ago, the period known as the Last Ice Age, a time of radical change in climate and environment. It explores how people were able to cope with and adapt to the often rapid alterations in their circumstances.Elle Clifford's background in Social Psychology brings important insights into aspects of the past which are never normally discussed - domestic and family life, pregnancy and child-rearing, and care of the sick and elderly. The book is aimed not only at students and specialists, but also and especially the interested public, for whom the most interesting questions are: How were they like us? and what behaviours do we share?

The Times Nature Book of the Year 2020Winner of the PEN/E.O. Wilson Literary Science Writing Award A Finalist for the Stanford Dolman Travel Book of the Year Award'Remarkable. If only every endangered species had a guardian angel as impassioned, courageous and pragmatic as Jonathan Slaght' Isabella Tree, author of Wilding'Gripping' Dave Goulson, author of A Sting in the TalePrimorye, a remote forested region near to where Russia, China and North Korea meet in a tangle of barbed wire, is the only place where brown bears, tigers and leopards co-exist. It is also home to one of nature's rarest birds, the Blakiston's fish owl. A chance encounter with this huge, strange bird was to change wildlife researcher Jonathan C. Slaght's life beyond measure. This is the story of Slaght's quest to safeguard the elusive owl from extinction. During months-long journeys covering thousands of miles, he has pursued it through its forbidding territory. He has spent time with the Russians who struggle on in the harsh conditions of the taiga forest. And he has observed how Russia's logging interests and evolving fortunes present new threats to the owl's survival. Preserving its habitats will secure the forest for future generations, both animal and human - but can this battle be won? Exhilarating and clear-sighted, Owls of the Eastern Ice is an impassioned reflection on our relationship with the natural world and on what it means to devote one's career to a single pursuit.'Slaght makes the people, wildlife and landscape of the Russian Far East come alive. Our Final Warning HarperCollins Publishers

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book must not be ignored. It really is our final warning. Mark Lynas delivers a vital account of the future of our earth, and our civilisation, if current rates of global warming persist. And it's only looking worse. We are living in a climate emergency. But how much worse could it get? Will civilisation collapse? Are we already past the point of no return? What kind of future can our children expect? Rigorously cataloguing the very latest climate science, Mark Lynas explores the course we have set for Earth over the next century and beyond.Degree by terrifying degree, he charts the likely consequences of global heating and the ensuing climate catastrophe. At one degree - the world we are already living in - vast wildfires scorch California and Australia, while monster hurricanes devastate coastal cities. At two degrees the Arctic ice cap melts away, and coral reefs disappear from the tropics. At three, the world begins to run out of food, threatening millions with starvation. At four, large areas of the globe are too hot for human habitation, erasing entire nations and turning billions into climate refugees. At five, the planet is warmer than for 55 million years, while at six degrees a mass extinction of unparalleled proportions sweeps the planet, even raising the threat of the end of all life on Earth. These escalating consequences can still be avoided, but time is running out. We must largely stop burning fossil fuels within a decade if we are to save the coral reefs and the Arctic. If we fail, then we risk crossing tipping points that could push global climate chaos out of humanity's control. This book must not be ignored. It really is our final warning.

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Allergic to Life Springer, Berlin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

As a practicing Allergist/Immunologist, I have written a general interest medical book on allergic disease, summarizing several of the major changes in day to day life over the past 50 years that has led tostates of increased inflammation. There is now an Epidemic of allergicand autoimmune disease in the first and developing world. While outdoorclimate change is now considered common knowledge, the impact oflonger work hours, artificial lighting, increased food shelf life and changesto the microbiome all have made a large impact. An "Allergy" is best defined as an "damaging response from theImmune system due to a substance in the environment." Immune responses start asout warning signals, or generalized "symptoms" that are caused by something inthe environment. Itching, aches, pains, swelling, coughing, and fatigue arejust Immune responses. Humans have adapted and dwell in extremely differentenvironments all over the world, but there is no place on the planet thathasn't been drastically affected by the planetary changes of the past 50 years. The cost of becoming the modern world is obvious, and recognized as is a globalpriority. But more than the polar ice caps or global warming, the personalmicroenvironment, I.E the things in people's lives that their body interactswith on a daily basis My hope is that after the first two chapters, readers should beaware that their body is in an unquestionably harmful environment, and that forthe most part the Immune system is just doing its job. With the followingchapters we get into the specifics, starting with microorganisms. The humanbody needs good bacteria to feel good, unfortunately we killed them all. Wedidn't kill the good ones on purpose, at the time there was no real clue howimportant good bacteria were. The miracle of antibiotics has transformed theworld - but at the cost of the good bacteria. Bacteria are much simplerorganisms and their reproductive life cycle is measured in hours to days. The next two chapters focus on indoor living, where we spend 98%of our day. Dust mites are worth a whole chapter on discussion. Whilescientists have been aware of these nearly invisible parasites for hundreds ofyears, and they have existed within our society since Ancient Egypt. The pastfew decades have seen an explosion of climate controlled, humidified indoorairspace that is ideally suited more mass production of mites. They cannot bekilled and they cannot be cleaned. At approximately 75% of the way throughthe book the reader should have complete awareness that the environment weexist in is alien, hostile, and our bodies are doing an amazing job stillhanging on!All roads of inflammation from the environment lead to the mastcell compartment. The stresses responses of the body, summarily drive up thiscompartment of the body, and has led to a world-wide prevalence between 14-17%of "mast cell activation syndrome." While genetics and comorbid conditions areimportant in any symptom or disease process, the mast cell compartment feedsand grows off all the major environmental changes of the past 50 or so years. Thisis why the human body in the 21st century is in a low level state of"rejection," of the world. Most of these changes are irreversible, but thesituation is not hopeless. Understanding how the body changes itself inresponse to its environment will allow controlled desensitization to theenvironment. With a special focus on Allergy and Mast Cell Activation, the target audience would bePrimary Care providers, physician assistants, nurses, patients and family members ofthose with Allergic Di

A Times Best Book of 2021From the very first dog to glowing fish and designer pigs - the human history of remaking nature. Virus-free mosquitoes, resurrected dinosaurs, designer humans - such is the power of the science of tomorrow. But this idea that we have only recently begun to manipulate the natural world is false. We've been meddling with nature since the last ice age. It's just that we're getting better at it - a lot better. Drawing on decades of research, Beth Shapiro reveals the surprisingly long history of human intervention in evolution through hunting, domesticating, polluting, hybridizing, conserving and genetically modifying life on Earth.Looking ahead to the future, she casts aside the scaremongering myths on the dangers of interference, and outlines the true risks and incredible opportunities that new biotechnologies will offer us in the years ahead. Not only do they present us with the chance to improve our own lives, but they increase the likelihood that we will continue to live in a rich and biologically diverse world.

(Very) Short History of Life On Earth Pan Macmillan

'A dazzling, beguiling story . . . told at an exhilarating pace' Literary Review'Henry Gee makes the kaleidoscopically changing canvas of life understandable and exciting. Who will enjoy reading this book? - Everybody!' Jared Diamond, author of Guns, Germs, and SteelFor billions of years, Earth was an inhospitably alien place - covered with churning seas, slowly crafting its landscape by way of incessant volcanic eruptions, the atmosphere in a constant state of chemical flux. And yet, despite facing literally every conceivable setback that living organisms could encounter, life has been extinguished and picked itself up to evolve again. Life has learned and adapted and continued through the billions of years that followed. It has weathered fire and ice. Slimes begat sponges, who through billions of years of complex evolution and adaptation grew a backbone, braved the unknown of pitiless shores, and sought an existence beyond the sea. From that first foray to the spread of early hominids who later became Homo sapiens, life has persisted, undaunted. A (Very) Short History of Life is an enlightening story of survival, of persistence, illuminating the delicate balance within which life has always existed, and continues to exist today. It is our planet like you've never seen it before.Life teems through Henry Gee's lyrical prose - colossal supercontinents drift, collide, and coalesce, fashioning the face of the planet as we know it today. Creatures are engagingly personified, from 'gregarious' bacteria populating the seas to duelling dinosaurs in the Triassic period to magnificent mammals with the future in their (newly evolved) grasp. Those long extinct, almost alien early life forms are resurrected in evocative detail. Life's evolutionary steps - from the development of a digestive system to the awe of creatures taking to the skies in flight - are conveyed with an alluring, up-close intimacy.

Pre-order the enthralling new biography of Ernest Shackleton by the world's greatest living explorer, Sir Ranulph Fiennes.'THE definitive book on Shackleton . . . such an authentic account by one of the few men who truly knows what it's like to challenge Antarctica.' LORRAINE KELLYTo write about Hell, it helps if you have been there. In 1915, Sir Ernest Shackleton's attempt to traverse the Antarctic was cut short when his ship, Endurance, became trapped in ice. What followed became legend.Throughout the long, dark Antarctic winter, Shackleton fights for his life and the lives of his men - enduring freezing temperatures, a perilous lifeboat journey through the ice-strewn sea, and a punishing march across the South Georgia glaciers to seek the one slim chance they have of rescue. Their situation is disastrous.Their survival would become history's most enthralling adventure. Yet Shackleton's critics have argued that the expedition was always doomed to fail. And that had Endurance not been destroyed by ice, his men would have suffered a slow and horrible death before completing their journey. No previous biographer has experienced even a tiny taste of the polar hell on earth endured by Shackleton and his men. That cannot be said of Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who has been described as 'our greatest living explorer'. From Shackleton's pursuit of adventure as a young merchant seamen, through his rivalry with Captain Scott, culminating in the two remarkable expeditions to Antarctica that revealed his unrivalled leadership and personal courage under the most extreme of circumstances, Fiennes brings the story vividly and viscerally to life, his own near-death on the ice, fifty years after his subject's death, providing the necessary proof to silence Shackleton's critics once and for all in a book that is part celebration, part vindication and all adventure.Praise for Sir Ranulph Fiennes:'The World's Greatest Living Explorer' - Guinness Book of Records'Full of awe-inspiring details of hardship, resolve and weather that defies belief, told by someone of unique authority. No one is more tailor-made to tell [this] story than Sir Ranulph Fiennes' - Newsday'Fiennes' own experiences certainly allow him to write vividly and with empathy of the hell that the men went through' - The Sunday Times

Everything that lives will die. That?s the fundamental fact of life. But not everyone dies at the same age: people vary wildly in their patterns of aging and their life spans?and that variation is nothing compared to what?s found in other animal and plant species. A giant fungus found in Michigan has been alive since the Ice Age, while a dragonfly lives but four months, a mayfly half an hour. What accounts for these variations?and what can we learn from them that might help us understand, or better manage, our own aging? With The Long and the Short of It, biologist and writer Jonathan Silvertown offers readers a witty and fascinating tour through the scientific study of longevity and aging. Dividing his daunting subject by theme?death, life span, aging, heredity, evolution, and more?Silvertown draws on the latest scientific developments to paint a picture of what we know about how life span, senescence, and death vary within and across species. At every turn, he addresses fascinating questions that have far-reaching implications: What causes aging, and what determines the length of an individual life? What changes have caused the average human life span to increase so dramatically ? fifteen minutes per hour ? in the past two centuries? If evolution favors those who leave the most descendants, why haven?t we evolved to be immortal? The answers to these puzzles and more emerge from close examination of the whole natural history of life span and aging, from fruit flies, nematodes, redwoods, and much more. The Long and the Short of It pairs a perpetually fascinating topic with a wholly engaging writer, and the result is a supremely accessible book that will reward curious readers of all ages.

A married person falls deeply in love with someone else. A man of average income feels he cannot be truly happy unless he owns an expensive luxury car. A dieter has an irresistible craving for ice cream. Desires often come to us unbidden and unwanted, and they can have a dramatic impact, sometimes changing the course of our lives. In On Desire, William B. Irvine takes us on a wide-ranging tour of our impulses, wants, and needs, showing us where these feelings come from and how we can try to rein them in. Spicing his account with engaging observations by writers like Seneca, Tolstoy, and Freud, Irvine considers the teachings of Buddhists, Hindus, the Amish, Shakers, and Catholic saints, as well as those of ancient Greek and Roman and modern European philosophers. Irvine also looks at what modern science can tell us about desire--such as what happens in the brain when we desire something and how animals evolved particular desires--and he advances a new theory about how desire itself evolved. Irvine also suggests that at the same time that we gained the ability to desire, we were "programmed" to find some things more desirable than others.Irvine concludes that the best way to attain lasting happiness is not to change the world around us or our place in it, but to change ourselves. If we can convince ourselves to want what we already have, we can dramatically enhance our happiness. Brimming with wisdom and practical advice, On Desire offers a thoughtful approach to controlling unwanted passions and attaining a more meaningful life.
