Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Perhaps the two most important conceptual breakthroughs in twentieth century physics are relativity and quantum mechanics. Developing a theory that combines the two seamlessly is a difficult and ongoing challenge. This accessible book contains intriguing explorations of this theme by the distinguished physicists Richard Feynman and Steven Weinberg. Richard Feynman's contribution examines the nature of antiparticles, and in particular the relationship between quantum spin and statistics. In his essay, Steven Weinberg speculates on how Einstein's theory of gravitation might be reconciled with quantum theory in the final laws of physics. Both these Nobel laureates have made huge contributions to fundamental research in physics, as well as to the popularization of science. Anyone interested in the development of modern physics will find this a fascinating book.

In the second, revised edition of a well-established textbook, the author strikes a balance between quantitative rigor and intuitive understanding, using a lively, informal style. The first chapter provides a detailed historical introduction to the subject, while subsequent chapters offer a quantitative presentation of the Standard Model. A simplified introduction to the Feynman rules, based on a "toy" model, helps readers learn the calculational techniques without the complications of spin. It is followed by accessible treatments of quantum electrodynamics, the strong and weak interactions, and gauge theories. New chapters address neutrino oscillations and prospects for physics beyond the Standard Model. The book contains a number of worked examples and many end-of-chapter problems. A complete solution manual is available for instructors.

The Role of Neutrinos, Strings, Gravity, and Variable Cosmological Constant in Elementary Particle Physics Springer, Berlin

This volume, the proceedings of the Coral Gables Conference, held December 12-16, 2000, contains some recent developments in the theory of gravitation, and discusses, in particular, the fact that gravity, like electrodynamics, is both attractive and repulsive. This property of gravitation enables us: (1) to explain the observed expansion of the universe, and, at the same time, its increasing acceleration; (2) to clarify the reasons for the expansion of the universe, together with competing forces of repulsive quintessence and the gravitational force of ordinary matter. Furthermore, given very strong gravitational forces of black holes, particles reach high energies and copiously emit gamma rays as well as neutrinos. The fact that these gamma rays burst at cosmic regions does imply that gravity can be a source of electromagnetism. We have thus obtained an experimental fact that the two long-range forces of gravity and electricity are unified. The conference also had discussions on neutrino masses, the cosmological constant, and violation of the Lorentz invariance.

Introduction to Elementary Particle Physics Cambridge University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The second edition of this successful textbook is fully updated to include the discovery of the Higgs boson and other recent developments, providing undergraduate students with complete coverage of the basic elements of the standard model of particle physics for the first time. Physics is emphasised over mathematical rigour, making the material accessible to students with no previous knowledge of elementary particles. Important experiments and the theory linked to them are highlighted, helping students appreciate how key ideas were developed. The chapter on neutrino physics has been completely revised, and the final chapter summarises the limits of the standard model and introduces students to what lies beyond. Over 250 problems, including 60 that are new to this edition, encourage students to apply the theory themselves. Partial solutions to selected problems appear in the book, with full solutions provided at www.cambridge.org/9781107050402.

Facts And Mysteries In Elementary Particle Physics World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A comprehensive overview of modern particle physics, which seeks to be accessible to anyone with a true passion for wanting to know how the universe works. We are introduced to the known particles of the world we live in. An explanation of quantum mechanics and relativity paves the way for an understanding of the laws that govern particle physics. These laws are put into action in the world of accelerators, colliders and detectors found at institutions such as CERN and Fermilab that are in the forefront of technical innovation. Real world and theory meet, with the use of Feynman diagrams to solve the problems of infinities and deduce the need for the Higgs boson. The volume offers insight from an eyewitness and participant in some of the greatest discoveries in 20th-century science. From Einstein's theory of relativity to the elusive Higgs particle, the text should interest anyone interested in the world of quarks, leptons and gauge theories. The work also contains many thumbnail sketches of particle physics personalities, including contemporaries as seen through the eyes of the author.Illustrated with pictures, these candid sketches present views of the characters that populate the field.

Introduction to Regge Theory and High Energy Physics - 2212841688

Introduction to Regge Theory and High Energy Physics Cambridge University Press

Nauka

Originally published in 1977, this book presents an extended introduction to the theory of hadrons, the elementary particles which occur in the atomic nucleus. The main emphasis is on the theory of the complex angular momentum plane 'Regge theory', which has grown from Regge's demonstration in 1959 that it is useful to regard angular momentum as a complex variable when discussing solutions of the Schrodinger equation for non-relativistic potential scattering. This theory helps to classify the many different particles which have been discovered in recent years, to explain the forces between these particles and to predict the results of high-energy scattering experiments. Regge theory thus serves as a unifying concept drawing together many different features of high-energy physics. This monograph is intended primarily for research students just beginning to concern themselves with particle physics, but more experienced workers will also find much to interest them in this detailed survey of the basic ideas and results of Regge theory.

Symmetries and Group Theory in Particle Physics - 2877177062

Symmetries and Group Theory in Particle Physics Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co....

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Symmetries, coupled with the mathematical concept of group theory, are an essential conceptual backbone in the formulation of quantum field theories capable of describing the world of elementary particles. §This primer is an introduction to and survey of the underlying concepts and structures needed in order to understand and handle these powerful tools. Specifically, in Part I of the book the symmetries and related group theoretical structures of the Minkowskian space-time manifold are analyzed, while Part II examines the internal symmetries and their related unitary groups, where the interactions between fundamental particles are encoded as we know them from the present standard model of particle physics.§This book, based on several courses given by the authors, addresses advanced graduate students and non-specialist researchers wishing to enter active research in the field, and having a working knowledge of classical field theory and relativistic quantum mechanics. Numerous end-of-chapter problems and their solutions will facilitate the use of this book as self-study guide or as course book for topical lectures.
