Entrepreneurship, Regional Development and Culture Springer International Publishing AG

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The aim of this book is to analyze the relationships among entrepreneurship, regional development and culture in the current economy. Using an institutional approach, it examines the main theoretical issues and practices and their effect on different dimensions of society and the economy. Business creation is considered a key element of economic growth, innovation and employment. In recent years, entrepreneurial scholars have studied the factors that affect entrepreneurship and drive economic growth. In doing so, these scholars have aimed to understand what promotes entrepreneurial activity and also how to improve the development of regions or countries to increase wealth in society. The institutional approach can be applied to the entrepreneurship field to understand the phenomenon of entrepreneurship. This view considers the role of environment in the decision to create a company, which is critical to entrepreneurship, innovation and economic growth. Environment relates to legal aspects, public policy and support services (formal institutions) but is especially important in terms of sociocultural context (informal institutions). The creation of new ventures is greatly influenced by culture. Furthermore, it is important to highlight the influence of entrepreneurship on regional development, specifically through job creation, stimulation of economic growth and innovation. Thus, entrepreneurship, regional development and culture are fundamental for understanding economic growth and development as well as other phenomena such as technology transfer or women s entrepreneurship. Featuring contributions and cases studies from various countries and sectors, this volume provides an essential reference for scholars, academics, and researchers in entrepreneurship, business management, innovation and economics.

Culture Institutions & Economic Development Edward Elgar

Inne 1

Regions are increasingly recognised as a key aspect of economic change in Europe, not merely as geographic spaces but also as social systems. Their history, culture, institutions and patterns of leadership mould the way in which they adapt to European and global competitive challenges. This book reviews the debate surrounding the construction of regions and presents eight case studies to illustrate how they are shaped and reshaped in a variety of different ways. The authors find that while some regions exhibit common patterns, there are significant variations, indicating that there is no definitive model of regional development. This book offers a systematic comparison of eight distinct regions and stateless nations, each with its own historical identity, but which is constantly being rebuilt in changing economic and political conditions. Avoiding economic or cultural determinism, the authors show how region-builders can shape their own responses to global challenges to produce models of development reflecting differing understandings and social compromises. Culture, Institutions and Economic Development will be warmly welcomed by academics within the fields of regional studies, European studies and political science.

This book addresses the highly differentiated spatial, social, cultural and demographic structure(s) of Germany, with a particular focus on the reciprocal relations between different levels of spatial development. The historical development of Germany serves as a background in order to provide context for the development of spatially relevant ideas and ideals (whether in relation to politics, landscape, or culture). In this regard, questions of divergence and convergence become highly salient. The book makes the complexity of spatial and social developments in Germany comprehensible. The neopragmatic approach adopted here allows bringing together different theoretical strands while providing a basis for independent regional geographic research at the same time. Beginning with an overview of the physical structures of Germany which provides the material point of departure for the societal development of Germany, key aspects of the German history are discussed. Particular attention is paid to the reciprocal influence between material substrate and notions of landscape. Here, specific 'German' trajectories of aesthetic and normative conceptions of landscape become clear.A common theme throughout the book are questions of divergence and of efforts towards convergence, which become evident when considering past and present economic, political, and demographic developments. Efforts to tackle current challenges, such as adapting to climate change and mitigating it, or securing raw materials, also become apparent. The complexity of spatial processes in Germany is illustrated in case study regions dealing with the challenges of structural change in traditional industrial regions (such as the Ruhr area), or e.g. efforts of Berlin to position and find itself as the capital of a unified Germany.Overall, the book shows how theory-driven regional geographic research can make spatiotemporal complexities tangible and comprehensible.

Early History of the Ancient Near East, 9000-2000 B.C. The University of Chicago Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Hans J. Nissen here provides a much-needed overview of 7000 years of development in the ancient Near East from the beginning of settled life to the formation of the first regional states. His approach to the study of Mesopotamian civilization differs markedly from conventional orientations, which impose a sharp division between prehistoric and historic, literate, periods. Nissen argues that this approach is too rigid to explain the actual development of that civilization. He deemphasizes the invention of writing as a turning point, viewing it as simply one more phase in the evolution of social complexity and as the result of specific social, economic, and political factors. With a unique combination of material culture analysis written data, Nissan traces the emergence of the earliest isolated settlements, the growth of a network of towns, the emergence of city states, and finally the appearance of territorial states. From his synthesis of the prehistoric and literate periods comes a unified picture of the development of Mesopotamian economy, society, and culture. Lavishly illustrated, The Early History of the Ancient Near East, 9000-2000 B.C. is an authoritative work by one of the most insightful observers of the evolution and character of Mesopotamian civilization.

Knowledge and innovation processes in Central and East European economies Instytut Wiedzy i Innowacji

GospodarkaBiznes, EkonomiaWydawnictwa naukowe i popularno-naukoweEkonomia

Autorami książki są wybitni specjaliści z zakresu innowacji i gospodarki wiedzy z OECD, Komisji Europejskiej, krajów wyszehradzkich oraz z Wielkiej Brytanii i Holandii. The aim of the book was to review recent research results in the sphere of knowledge and innovation processes in Central and East European (CEE) economies, especially in Visegrad countries (namely: the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland). The volume covers large parts of the issues which are connected with the knowledge economy, as it what was called by OECD and the World Bank, namely with R&D, innovations, innovation policy, education (incl. human capital), foresight, e-business etc. The key questions of the book were as follows: do knowledge and innovation contribute to the development of CEE countries?is the distance between (esp.) the V-4 countries and the EU growing or decreasing? are knowledge and innovation priorities included in policy agenda in CEE as factors of further economic growth?do industries and companies appreciate benefits from knowledge and innovation activities and draw more attention to them? MAJOR FINDINGS of the book: - Not only companies but also geography, institutions and policies determine growth and competitiveness. The new EU member states should develop and coordinate policies related to the knowledge economy.- EU should play larger role in the coordination process, including also influence on regional policies, because the policy-makers in CEE countries often concentrate on short-, instead of long-term, problems.- Knowledge and innovation priorities become more frequently included in policy agendas, also on a regional level; nevertheless, in a number of cases they are limited to slogans and the interests of sectoral or local lobbies often prevail. - Policy-makers of CEE countries should concentrate more on creation of pro-innovative working environment and cluster-oriented culture, based on trust and exchange of knowledge and innovation, rather than on an increase of R&D expenditures only. - There still lack sufficient measures of, e.g. knowledge economy or research policy improvement. Therefore, the studies on research systems (and foresight processes) should be intensified and the results included in development policies.

Italy: Abruzzo Bradt Travel Guides

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Bradt's Abruzzo remains the only full English-language guide to this beautiful and increasingly favoured part of Italy. This new edition has been thoroughly updated to cover all developments since the last edition, reflecting the region's growing popularity for holiday homes and as a busy conference destination at the heart of Italy, plus its appeal for wildlife and active tourism, including trekking, family holidays and horse-riding. Abruzzo offers the best of undiscovered Italy from pristine beaches to mountain glaciers, with some of Italy's most beautiful medieval villages clinging to the hillsides in between. This brand new edition of Bradt's Abruzzo provides all the practical and background information you'll need to explore this surprising region. What makes the Abruzzo region remarkable is that it is still about as unique and authentic an Italian experience as you can get in a country so devoured by international tourism. Abruzzo offers one of the most beautiful coastlines in the country, only a short distance from the tallest mountain ranges in Italy outside the Alps (it is the second most popular skiing centre in Italy outside the Alps) and one of the best places for hiking and flora/fauna spotting. What's more, despite the economic downturn of recent times, the regional government continues to invest in a 'beautification' project for its major urban centres and in the development of its regional highlights such as mountains, wildlife parks and rural towns. It's notable that in the 2016 national competition for 'I Borghi Piů Belli d'Italia' (The Most Beautiful Towns in Italy) programme, Abruzzo was recognised as having 22 of the country's most beautiful towns, trailing second only behind Umbria and with at least a handful more than Tuscany. Intriguingly, Madonna's family hails from the town of Pacentro, to which the singer donated US$500,000 for restoration works after the 2009 earthquake in the region. Blue Flag beaches, mountain hiking and where to spot rare wildlife such as bears and wolves are all covered, as are untouched castles and frescoed churches and the region's plethora of Roman ruins. Italian cooking and the best places to eat are featured (Abruzzo is home to the majority of Italy's domestic pasta production), and there is extensive coverage of culture and language (Abruzzo is one of Italy's most linguistically diverse regions). Written with warmth and insight by a native Abruzzesi, Bradt's Abruzzo contains all the information you need to discover this enchanting part of Italy.

Flashpoints in the War on Terrorism Routledge

Inne 1

The future security environment has been forecast in terms of nation-state clashes over natural resources, modernization, and culture. Yet America's security interests are more directly affected by the intractable tension between Muslims and non-Muslims within six specific regions: the Fertile Crescent, Balkans, Post-Soviet Region, the Himalayas, Southeast Asia, and sub-Saharan Africa. These clashes have led to extreme violence and fuel terrorism not only within those regions, but globally. The National Intelligence Council forecasts within the next 15 years "weak governments, lagging economies, religious extremism, and youth bulges will align to create a perfect storm for internal conflict in certain regions." Flashpoints in the War on Terrorism illuminates the root causes of these crises and offers policy recommendations to prevent the coming storm.Countering grass-roots extremism is necessary to ameliorate conflict. However, foreign jihadists are ready to fight anywhere they believe Muslim lands are under attack. Thus it is important to understand the relationship between internal and external actors and domestic and foreign interests. To be successful, the United States must secure lasting peace and economic development in these regional flashpoints, which are primarily characterized in religious terms. By bringing together experts on each region, this book traces the historical roots of these conflicts, the impact of colonial powers imposing artificial boundaries on populations, how modernization transformed these conflicts by making them more deadly, and their link to the ideology of Political Islamic terrorism. Ultimately, Flashpoints in the War on Terrorism prioritizes US foreign policy challenges by identifying critical hot spots that stoke the fire of international terrorism.
