A NEW STATESMAN AND TIMES LITERARY SUPPLEMENT BOOK OF THE YEAR 2021'Deserves to remain the standard treatment of the subject in English for many decades to come' Roderick Beaton, Times Literary SupplementA thrilling history of the revolutionary birth of modern Greece from 'the preeminent historian of a generation' (Misha Glenny)In the exhausted, repressive years that followed Napoleon's defeat in 1815, there was one cause that came to galvanize countless individuals across Europe and the United States: freedom for Greece.Mark Mazower's wonderful new book recreates one of the most compelling, unlikely and significant events in the story of modern Europe. In the face of near impossible odds, the people of the villages, valleys and islands of Greece rose up against Sultan Mahmud II and took on the might of the imperial Ottoman armed forces, its Turkish cavalrymen, Albanian foot soldiers and the fearsome Egyptians. Despite the most terrible disasters, they held on until military intervention by Russia, France and Britain finally secured the kingdom of Greece.Mazower brilliantly brings together the different strands of the story. He takes us into the minds of revolutionary conspirators and the terrors of besieged towns, the stories of itinerant priests, sailors and slaves, ambiguous heroes and defenceless women and children struggling to stay alive amid a conflict of extraordinary brutality. Ranging across the Eastern Mediterranean and far beyond, he explores the central place of the struggle in the making of Romanticism and a new kind of politics that had volunteers flocking from across Europe to die in support of the Greeks. A story of how statesmen came to terms with an even more powerful force than themselves - the force of nationalism - this is above all a book about how people decided to see their world differently and, at an often terrible cost to themselves and their families, changed history.'Exquisite, impressive' The Times'Superbly subtle and thorough' Daily Telegraph

Great French Revolution, 1789-93 Black Rose Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

With an Introduction by George Woodcock. With the international celebrations of the French Revolution as background, the publication of Peter Kropotkin's classic with an introduction by George Woodcock represents the fulfilment of an important documentary need. The turbulent upheaval that swept in the first mighty revolution in the West, and which had such far ranging consequences, has subsequently been described by a thousand differing pens. From the King's summoning of the Estates General in 1789 to the establishment of the Directory in 1793, the revolution has had many interpretations. But Kropotkin is among the very few who analyses this drama not only as a complex interplay of its leading personalities or a chain of political decisions made from above; rather, he penetrates this surface confusion to describe a great reordering of the economic bases of the ancien régime by the mass of urban workers and the peasantry. He saw the redistribution of land impeded at every step by an aggrandising middle class and by the forces of the counter-revolution inside and outside France. Kropotkin, as a true historian, was not concerned with merely the period he discussed. He saw it as a climax in a long past and future development. The result is a very skillful and absorbing book, with great momentum, an active and readable style, and a capable use of a mass of details regarding the most obscure but no less important aspects of the French Revolution. First published in 1909 and long out of print, The Great French Revolution is the finest historical writing from the fluent pen of Peter Kropotkin (1842-1921). The introduction by George Woodcock, the celebrated Canadian author, throws a modern light on the significance and scope of Kropotkin's contribution. 1989: 630 pages, index Paperback ISBN: 978-0-921689-38-6 Hardcover ISBN: 978-0-921689-39-3 For full details and the table of contents, visit: http://blackrosebooks.net/products/view/The+Great+French+Revolution/28116

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... State structures, international forces, and class relations: Theda Skocpol shows how all three combine to explain the origins and accomplishments of social-revolutionary transformations. Social revolutions have been rare but undeniably of enormous importance in modern world history. States and Social Revolutions provides a new frame of reference for analyzing the causes, the conflicts, and the outcomes of such revolutions. It develops a rigorous, comparative historical analysis of three major cases: the French Revolution of 1787 through the early 1800s, the Russian Revolution of 1917 through the 1930s, and the Chinese Revolution of 1911 through the 1960s. Believing that existing theories of revolution, both Marxist and non-Marxist, are inadequate to explain the actual historical patterns of revolutions, Skocpol urges us to adopt fresh perspectives. Above all, she maintains that states conceived as administrative and coercive organizations potentially autonomous from class controls and interests must be made central to explanations of revolutions.

". But above all Essad Bey was a brilliant, intoxicating stylist. Bey's writing is of a kind that hardly exists among contemporary non-fiction writers, even less so among experts on Islam. It has rhythm and uses harmonious imagery; it is rich in semantic and syntactic variations; he understands the arc of suspense so well that it sometimes carries the author away from historical facts towards possible but not proven fiction. His biography on Mohammed has perhaps no place in scientifc libraries - but one could not think of a more entertaining depiction, one which captures the spirit of early Islamic history above and beyond that of any source-critical monograph." Navid KermaniEssad Bey (1905-1942) was born in Kiev as Lev Nussimbaum. He gew up in Baku/Azerbaijan where his father was in the oil busniess. After Lev's mother's death in 1911, he was brought up by a nanny who taught him German, her mother tongue. After the family's escape from the Russian Revolution via Istanbul, Rome and Paris, the Nussimbaums settled in Berlin in 1920. Having loved the Muslim religion and culture since his early childhood, Lev converted to Islam at the age of 15 and, henceforth, called himself Essad Bey. He soon became a writer, starting out in the role of "The Man for the East" in the most prodigious German literary review "Die literarische Welt". In the winter of 1929/1930, at the age of 24, his satirical quasi-autobiography "Öl und Blut im Orient" was published which caused a press scandal. However, this was the starting point of his career as an author. In the following eight years he wrote at least sixteen more books, all of them having been translated into many languages. Amongst these titles are his biographies of Mohammed, Tzar Nicholas II, Stalin, Lenin, and Reza Shah. He also wrote two novels under the pseudonym Kurban Said - the world famous Ali and Nino and The Girl from the Golden Horn. Essad Bey died at the age of 36, poor and miserable, in Positano/Italy from complications of Buerger's disease. After Ali and Nino, Mohammed is his most popular and best-known book.

From 1918 to 1933 revolution and counter-revolution followed hot on each others' heels. The barbarity of the Nazis is well-documented. Less well-known are the events that preceded Hitler's rise to power. Rob Sewell gives a picture of the tumultuous events - the 1918 revolution, the collapse of the Kaiser's regime, the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic, the Kapp putsch in 1920, the French occupation of the Ruhr in 1923 and the ensuing revolutionary upheavals culminating in the abortive Hamburg uprising, finally Hitler's rise to power in 1929-33. Above all this book shows in the decisive and tragic role of the German workers' leadership the answer to one of the key questions of the modern era: How was it possible for the mightiest labour movement in Europe to be trampled under the iron heel of fascism? This edition features several new articles by Rob Sewell, including an analysis of the pre-revolutionary situation Britain faced in 1919.

As we confront the challenges of climate change, author James George calls us to wake up and stop our careless treatment of our planet before it's too late. At the same time, he shares his own practice towards waking up - the practice of Presence, known to all spiritual paths, and simply and eloquently presented in this book. From THE LITTLE GREEN BOOK... "To become aware of the omnipresence of Consciousness may be the next great leap in human evolution and the foundation of the new paradigm in which both science and spirituality can find common ground. For consciousness is the field that connects - not separates - everything with everything, at all levels, and everything with the All, in one Wholeness." Advance Praise: "The ecological revolution needed for a sustainable society will involve our technologies and institutions, of course, but it must also involve a radical shift in our relationship with ourselves, with each other, with other species and with the planet as a whole, in short a revolution of consciousness. This book is highly recommended." - Ravi Ravindra, author of Science and Spirit "What is needed above all, James George writes, is a radical awakening of our consciousness, a transformation of what we have mistakenly called human nature. This book eloquently cries out to the world for a radical blending of environmental sensibility and spiritual insight. - Jacob Needleman, author of The American Soul "The Honorable James George has put into his thoughtful and timely

A treasury of information based on solid scholarship, anyone seeking a factual and vivid account of the story of arms from the Renaissance period to the Industrial Revolution will welcome this book. The author chooses as his starting-point the invasion of Italy by France in 1494, which sowed the dragon's teeth of all the successive European wars; the French invasion was to accelerate the trend towards new armaments and new methods of warfare. The author describes the development of the handgun and the pike, the use and style of staff-weapons, mace and axe and war-hammer, dagger and dirk and bayonet. He shows how armour attained its full Renaissance splendour and then suffered its sorry and inevitable decline, culminating in the Industrial Revolution, with its far-reaching effects on military armaments. Above all, he follows the long history of the sword, queen of weapons, to the late eighteenth century, when it finally ceased to form a part of a gentleman's every-day wear. Lavishly illustrated. EWART OAKESHOTT was one of the world's leading authorities on the arms and armour of medieval Europe. His other works on the subject include Records of the Medieval Sword and The Sword in the Age of Chivalry.
