WHO Guide to Mental & Neurological Health in Primary Care Royal Society of Medicine Press

Medycyna > English Division

The second edition of the WHO Guide to Mental and Neurological Health in Primary Care has been prepared in the light of the experience of primary-care clinicians and takes account of their specific needs. Concise, user-friendly and orientated towards management, this book contains essential information for GPs and other healthcare workers on how to help patients of all ages who are suffering from mental and neurological ill health. The book gives helpful guidance on diagnosis and on treatment strategies for primary care clinicians. It also provides guidance on what to say to patients and their families and how to give them support and advice. It provides materials to support clinicians in working collaboratively with patients and encouraging their active participation in treatment. A set of patient information leaflets is provided on CD-Rom. These can be printed out and given to patients. A set of summary cards is provided: they are designed to be used interactively by the clinician in order to facilitate discussion with the patient during the consultation. Suggested template charts of information about local resources for people suffering mental and neurological ill health are also provided. The text of the book is available in searchable HTML format on the Centre for Evidence Based Mental Health website: www.mentalneurologicalprimarycare.org The evidence base for the recommendations on treatments is set out: but the guidance contains much more than the outcomes of trials of the efficacy of particular treatments. It represents also the clinical wisdom of a very large group of experts whose collective experience of mental and neurological health in primary care is enormous. Although designed primary with primary care clinicians in mind, the book will be useful to others who work with primary care in the fields of mental health and neurological health - including community health workers, voluntary organizations and primary care patients. The guidance in this book is compatible with ICD-10 and with the Clinical Terms (Read Codes), which are used by GPs. As such, it provides a common language to help all those working in mental and neurological healthcare - primary and secondary care clinicians, patients, families and community groups - to communicate with each other. The volume is a highly practical, simple to use tool that can help make neurological and mental health care a more integral part of primary healthcare practice. Praise for 1st Edition 'This book is a little cracker. The style is ideal for a busy GP.' British Journal of General Practice The real beauty of the book is that it is designed for the clinician that is not a psychiatrist. Hence for learning how to deal with patients in third, fourth and final year exams (not to mention in practice) it is invaluable. This isn't a book aimed strictly at students, but reading through it I rather wished I had it before my finals. GKT Gazette This book is directed at primary care physicians and will be an invaluable resource to them. Mental health professionals will also benefit from using this book, in particular the patient information and resources. doctors.net This book can definitely be recommended as a useful resource for primary care and community mental health teams... a vade mecum of psychiatric disorders and practice. Primary Care Psychiatry An extremely useful resource for busy primary care practitioners, packed with just the sort of information needed when managing patients with mental health problems. Every consultation room should have a copy! Primary Care Mental Health. Vol 2. No 3/4 The book has already been well tested among primary care practitioners. There is a useful resource directory and basic guides such as The Mental Health Act, Children act, audit tools and descriptions of psychological therapies ... Treating Postnatal Depression - A Psychological Approach for Health Care Practitioners John Wiley & Sons Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

When mothers feel depressed in the months after childbirth, their feelings have often been dismissed as understandable reactions to the stress of caring for a new baby, perhaps complicated by family and marital demands. Most mothers cope, with varying degrees of support and success, but for many the neglect and misunderstanding of postnatal emotional problems can lead to long-term difficulties, with implications for their families as well as for mental health services. This book provides an understanding of depression following childbirth which draws together current theories and a synthesis of key research with a framework for intervention. It provides a novel way of thinking about postnatal depression, and a treatment program which is based on this model. The clinical programs and interventions which are outlined have been found to be effective at reducing postnatal depression. These programs are aimed at developing coping skills in women which: Reduce the symptoms of postnatal depression Improve maternal functioning in terms of self-esteem, assertiveness and coping Address marital and partner difficulties which often arise Deal with parent-infant difficulties the may exist Facilitate the use and development of existing social networks The authors have reviewed current knowledge on postnatal depression, and given guidelines for best practice in a variety of approaches to treatment and prevention, Included is a detailed account of a tried-and-tested 10-week treatment program, together with materials and resources that a busy clinician might need to implement a similar program. Treating postnatal Depression will be a valuable resource for clinical psychologists, counsellors, psychiatrists, nurses, health visitors, midwives and other professionals who need to understand and deal with the emotional problems of mothers and babies. "A very readable book which presents an excellent overview of this important topic, and allows the authors to share their wealth of clinical experience in the clinical management of depressed mothers."Professor Peter Lewinsohn, University of Oregon "This book is a very timely and accessible approach for health care workers who treat women with postnatal depression Medical interventions alone are rarely adequate in the management of this disorder, an understanding of the psychological issues is essential, and this comprehensive manual, which deals with how to approach the complexities of the disorder, will aid workers significantly and, ultimately, benefit those who are suffering." This practical and comprehensive title provides illuminating, evidence-based approaches in headache medicine for using traditional medical therapies in conjunction with alternative approaches to care. In all, the book details how multidisciplinary management and the combination of conventional and complementary medical services - integrative medicine - leads to superior patient outcomes: improved patient satisfaction, reduced stress, and more readily treatable, less serious illness. State-of-the-art and developed by experts in their fields, these 12 chapters present research and analysis of a wide range of non-pharmacologic interventions in headache care, seeking to inspire clinicians to formulate personalized headache treatment plans, and to work together by integrating their expertise in a multidisciplinary context to address patients' unique conditions, needs, circumstances, and treatment. Chapter one provides an overview of integrative medicine and proposes a step-wise approach for incorporating integrative modalities into a headache practice. Chapter two focuses on the attention to be paid to relevant aspects of a patient's medical history. The next four chapters discuss lifestyle factors that play a role in headache, including trigger identification, exercise, nutrition, and sleep. The scope of mind-body therapies such as acupuncture, yoga, and mindfulness is explored in chapter seven, and the psychology of pain is the subject of chapter eight. Chapter nine investigates the safety and efficacy of nutraceuticals, or pharmaceutical alternatives. The final three chapters review neuromodulation and interventional approaches to headache management. An invaluable and timely contribution to the clinical literature, Integrative Headache Medicine - An Evidence-Based Guide for Clinicians will be of great interest to neurologists, pain physicians, primary care clinicians, behavioral psychologists, psychiatrists, physical therapists, social workers, nutritionists and any other health professionals interested in delivering the highest quality care for headache patients.

Transgender Medicine Springer Nature Switzerland AG

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Although transgender persons have been present in various societies throughout human history, it is only during the last several years that they have become widely acknowledged in our society and their right to quality medical care has been established. In the United States, endocrinologists have been providing hormonal therapy for transgender individuals for decades; however, until recently, there has been only limited literature on this subject, and non-endocrine aspects of medical care for transgender individual have not been well addressed in the endocrine literature. The goal of this volume is not only to address the latest in hormonal therapy for transgender individuals (including pediatric and geriatric age groups), but also to familiarize the reader with other aspects of transgender care, including primary and surgical care, fertility preservation, and the management of HIV infection. In addition to medical issues, psychological, social, ethical and legal issues pertinent to transgender individuals add to the complexities of successful treatment of these patients. A final chapter includes extensive additional resources for both transgender patients and providers. Thus, an endocrinologist providing care to a transgender person will be able to use this single resource to address most of the patient's needs. While Transgender Medicine is intended primarily for endocrinologists, this book will be also useful to primary care physicians, surgeons providing gender-confirming procedures, mental health professionals participating in the care of transgender persons, and medical residents and students.

Naturopathic Medicine - 2871697969

Naturopathic Medicine Springer, Berlin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book offers comprehensive coverage of naturopathic medicine. The principles and values of this profession are already clearly stated (i.e., Find and Treat the Cause; Treat the Whole Person, etc.), but few are the textbooks that provide a clear exposition of what the approach is that differs from what is described as conventional or allopathic medicine. The toolkit - herbs or nutrients - then becomes the defining feature, but this is not the most important attribute. To paraphrase the historian of medicine Harris Coulter - in this approach the body reacts creatively to stressors - and the Empirical school or natural medicine approach is more focused on supporting adaptive responses than suppressing symptoms. Or to put it another way, naturopathic physicians certainly do things to ameliorate symptoms, but their real interest is to discern what disturbances to the determining factors of health lead to imbalances, physiological dysfunction, and are generating the symptoms.  This is not an attempt to argue that all health issues can get better on their own or that conventional medical interventions aren't capable of producing stellar outcomes. Conventional medicine holds great value, but there remains a concurrent need for a naturopathic approach that helps rebuild the body. There is a need for an approach in medicine that works to support adaptive responses of the body, reduce maladaptive responses, address determining factors of health, and sometimes create temporary homeostasis with agents such as drugs (or certain natural medicines) can play to maintain life when the body's healing responses are insufficient. This book takes this approach and begins by examining what health is and then what states lead to disease. In terms of the basis of disease states, the book teaches about how the lack of coordination in the body's bioregulatory systems (hormones, nervous system, cell signaling) can lead to disease, as well as the impact of irreversible degeneration, genetic damage, chronic stress, etc. The book takes the reader to some of the more common and well described reasons for these states of dysfunction, including the body's inability to process environmental toxins and disruptions to the human microbiome. The book then teaches how to assess a patient, and how various natural therapies impact root causes of disease, the long term consequences, and the various clinical manifestations. The book then takes a systems approach - cardiovascular, pulmonary, etc. This is where most books on the subject start, but instead of breaking out a  number of conditions and giving protocols of diet, supplements, herbs etc., the author examines how to restore stability and function to that system. There is in depth coverage of how to confront degenerative processes that make self-healing far more challenging, or perhaps not entirely attainable. The application of the model of healing outlined in previous chapters is applied to each system. Special topics are then covered, ranging from lifespan/primary care considerations to the role of research, the rise of advanced data analytics as decision assistance, to the environmental, cultural, and global determinants of health. Each chapter will additionally include tables that summarize key diagnosis or treatment points, arrayed in an order that reflects the model presented in the book. This is an ideal guide for students in naturopathic medicine, as well as physicians and medical professionals looking to learn more about this field aimed towards maximizing patient resilience.
