Sustainable Development Goals and Sustainable Supply Chains in the Post-global Economy Springer International Publishing
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
This book presents a collection of studies on current best practices for delivering sustainable development policies within supply chains. It critiques the limitations of existing business theory and practice on sustainable supply chain management, and discusses opportunities for new conceptual models for businesses to engage with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It examines how businesses can work towards implementing Sustainable Development Goals in the contexts of entrepreneurial initiative, industry collaboration and regional development. SDGs renew the sustainable development agenda for global communities and ask businesses and organisations to reset their sustainable development policies. A strategy to embed sustainable development principles into business operations along the supply chain operations, which has been a conceptual and, in many instances, practitioner, business and industry achievement of the past decades, is not enough to shift the economic and social conditions of poor populations around the world. How would the global supply chains of the future look like? What social relations does it envisage? How will businesses and organisations engage with societies, environments and complex institutional contexts in emerging markets and developing countries, which are faced with issues of population growth, needed leaps in infrastructure provision, educational and health improvements, cultural and institutional shifts? The books challenges current approaches to sustainable supply chain practices guided by discussion on SDGs. It reviews implementation issues of existing sustainable development approaches, assesses the advancement of sustainable development strategies and examines the opportunities for global value chains to increase their positive social and environmental inputs in regions, communities and organisations. The book collects both conceptual and empirical studies set in a variety of business and organisational contexts, such as manufacturing, retail, procurement, cities and industrial parks. It contests the accepted axioms of sustainable practices in the global supply chains and proposes new models for organisations and production networks to engage with societies and address market and production effects on communities and institutions.

Entrepreneurship, Regional Development and Culture Springer International Publishing AG
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
The aim of this book is to analyze the relationships among entrepreneurship, regional development and culture in the current economy. Using an institutional approach, it examines the main theoretical issues and practices and their effect on different dimensions of society and the economy. Business creation is considered a key element of economic growth, innovation and employment. In recent years, entrepreneurial scholars have studied the factors that affect entrepreneurship and drive economic growth. In doing so, these scholars have aimed to understand what promotes entrepreneurial activity and also how to improve the development of regions or countries to increase wealth in society. The institutional approach can be applied to the entrepreneurship field to understand the phenomenon of entrepreneurship. This view considers the role of environment in the decision to create a company, which is critical to entrepreneurship, innovation and economic growth. Environment relates to legal aspects, public policy and support services (formal institutions) but is especially important in terms of sociocultural context (informal institutions). The creation of new ventures is greatly influenced by culture. Furthermore, it is important to highlight the influence of entrepreneurship on regional development, specifically through job creation, stimulation of economic growth and innovation. Thus, entrepreneurship, regional development and culture are fundamental for understanding economic growth and development as well as other phenomena such as technology transfer or women s entrepreneurship. Featuring contributions and cases studies from various countries and sectors, this volume provides an essential reference for scholars, academics, and researchers in entrepreneurship, business management, innovation and economics.

Sustainable development is one of the most frequently used terms in contemporary social and spatial analysis. Theorists, researchers, planners and politicians discuss the problem in all its possible aspects. Sometimes one gets the impression that the notion of sustainable development is used to describe so many different things that its real meaning seems to be lost. The problem is especially complicated when we discuss the sustainable development of urban areas. The concentration of social and economic phenomena in a relatively small area intensifies the problems stemming from the dynamics of development. And the natural environment is often forgotten in urban development plans. Thus the issue of the sustainable development of cities evokes many doubts, misunderstandings and debates on such questions as:

Beyond Growth Beacon Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Herman Daly is probably the most prominent advocate of the need for a change in economic thinking in response to environmental crisis. an iconoclast economist who has worked as a renegade insider at the World Bank in recent years, Daly has argued for overturning some basic economic assumptions. He has a wide and growing reputation among environmentalists, both inside and outside the academy. Daly argues that if sustainable development means anything at this historical moment, it demands that we conceive of the economy as part of the ecosystem and, as a result, give up on the ideal of economic growth. We need a global understanding of developing welfare that does not entail expansion. These simple ideas turn out to be fundamentally radical concepts, and basic ideas about economic theory, poverty, trade, and population have to be discarded or rethought, as Daly shows in careful, accessible detail. These are questions with enormous practical consequences. Daly argues that there is a real fight to control the meaning of "sustainable development", and that conventional economists and development thinkers are trying to water down its meaning to further their own ends. Beyond Growth is an argument that will turn the debate around.

Building the New American Economy Columbia University Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
In this passionate and powerful book - part manifesto, part plan of action - the renowned economist Jeffrey D. Sachs offers a practical strategy to move America, seemingly more divided than ever, toward a new consensus: sustainable development. Sustainable development is a holistic approach that emphasizes economic, social, and environmental objectives in shaping policy. In focusing too much on economic growth, the United States has neglected rising economic inequality and dire environmental threats. Now, even growth is imperiled. In Building the New American Economy, Sachs shows how the United States can find a path to renewed economic progress that is fair and environmentally sustainable

Circular Economy: Global Perspective Springer Nature Singapore
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
A circular economy is an alternative to a traditional linear economy (make, use, dispose) in which we keep resources in use for as long as possible, extract the maximum value from them whilst in use, then recover and regenerate products and materials at the end of each service life. Circular economy (CE) is important towards sustainable development, resources circulation and conservation, involving closing of material loops and cascading used resources, to prevent waste occurrence, and transforming the resulting residual streams into new (secondary) resources. Strategies and legislative framework for waste management are important steps for development of a more CE where resource efficiency becomes the key driver for both economic growth and environmental protections. A few countries achieved good results implementing CE as a replacement of the linear economy. Resource managers and planners should thoroughly identify factors to implement CE for societal benefits. This book presents how resource consumption is minimized with rational use based on 3Rs, legislative framework and government supports towards implementing CE initiatives, example of best practices, future plans and targets in different countries those are helpful for researchers, planners and implementers.

Asia & Africa In The Global Economy United Nations
Biznes
The performances of Asian and African economies over recent decades has clearly shown that engagement with the global economy can play a key role of advancing development. Researchers and policymakers have paid particular attention to the marked divergence of growth in Southeast Asia and in sub-Saharan Africa. One of the most obvious differences in their performance and economic structure has been the extent of their participation in the global economy. While many East Asian economies have accelerated their integration into the world economy and upgraded their mode of linkages, the majority of sub-Saharan African countries have been increasingly marginalized. What is less clear, however, is the significance of different policy, institutional and structural issues - and the manner in which they have interacted - in explaining the divergent performances of Southeast Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. This book systematically deciphers the different experiences in the two regions as they have interacted with an ever-changing global economy. It provides comprehensive coverage of policies and institutions, focusing on the key sectors of primary exports, resource processing for export, manufacturing, foreign direct investment, financial flows, and official development assistance. This detailed comparative analysis comes at a time when developing countries continue to search for strategies to strengthen their participation in the global economy - and bring more widespread and sustainable benefits to their peoples.

Spatial development of Polish and Ukrainian Big Cities at the Beginning of the 21st Century - Habrel Mykola, Marszał Tadeusz
Książki & Multimedia > Książki
Opis - Poland and Ukraine have a centuries-long history of neighbourly relations. There have been various periods in the long coexistence of the two nations, sometimes good and sometimes painful - besides conflicts that are difficult to forget there are many examples of creative cooperation and joint Polish-Ukrainian achievements. The collapse of the communist system and changes on the political map of this part of the world have created new conditions and new opportunities for the development of relations between Poland and Ukraine. Apart from intensifying economic cooperation, commercial exchange and movement of population (not only in the border region), there is a growing scientific and cultural cooperation. Poland's membership in the European Union and NATO on the one hand, and Ukraine's striving for strengthening the ties with the Western world on the other hand make fostering the partnership relations even more important for achievement of convergent strategic political goals serving the best interests of both nations. During the past two decades, starting from the political breakthrough in the early 1990s, both countries have gone a long way towards reinstatement of democracy, self-government and market mechanisms, and recreation of contacts with the world. Today, Poland anci Ukraine arc dtffeTent countries than twenty years ago. Still, much effort is needed from both nations to completely eliminate the economic and social backwardness caused by five decades of 'real socialism', 'socialist democracy' and 'centrally planned economy'. Among major issues that need to be addressed are those relating to spatial development and sustainable socio-economic relations. Nature Tourism Conservation & Development in Kwazulu-Natal World Bank
Biznes
This volume assesses how various institutional, policy and managerial options can enhance nature tourism's contribution to the 'triple bottom line'. There are win-win outcomes but also trade offs between various policy objectives including: economic growth; poverty reduction; conservation finance/biodiversity conservation. This collaborative report highlights the complementarities and the trade-offs in promoting and managing sustainable nature tourism development and conservation. Nature tourism is important for many developing countries, including South Africa. If wisely managed, nature tourism offers valuable opportunities for generating revenues for development and for conservation. The recommendations are fairly specific to the Ezemvelo KwaZulu Natal Wildlife area. By combining various options into an integrated package to achieve economic development, equity and conservation, such a balanced approach provides pro-poor tourism opportunities for local communities, by reinvesting the proceeds in on-the-ground work in the reserves and in the community. It requires collaboration with private game reserves to drop fences and could contribute to a successful transformation of wildlife management to a nature tourism economy.
