Mariology at the Beginning of the Third Millennium Pickwick Publications

Since the Second Vatican Council the place of Mary in theology and generally in the life of the Church has been at times muted. This is perhaps understandable given the debates concerning Mary's ""place"" in the documents of Vatican II. In an ecumenical age, it was argued, the church needed a less triumphalist Mariology and piety with a greater focus on Mary as model disciple. In certain respects this has led to a dichotomy between the continued Marian piety of many faithful (and, truth be told, the piety of the post-conciliar popes) and a theological timidity concerning Mary. This collection of chapters seeks to address the current situation of Mariology. Taken as a whole these chapters represent a welcome call for renewal and reawakening in Mariology. The collection is also delightfully eclectic, both in terms of topics covered and in terms of the denominational and academic backgrounds of the authors. FOR BACK COVER: ""This work begins with Professor Isabell Naumann's magisterial synthesis of the contemporary themes and official Church teachings in Mariology, followed by essays that integrate Mariology with topics in spirituality, Scripture, theological anthropology, aesthetics, ecclesiology, and historical theology. . . . This is the most engaging collection of essays on Mariology currently available in the Anglophone market."" --Tracey Rowland, University of Notre Dame (Australia)   ""These contributions illustrate the richness of Marian traditions throughout Christendom . . . . While this is a book about tradition, its message is not about the past; it is a message for our own time."" --Doru Costache, Sydney College of Divinity, Australia   ""Here is a resource that every theologian interested in the study of Mary will find useful. . . . It provides a thorough presentation of Catholic Mariology to date, with pointers of what is to come for the future study of Christ's mother . . ."" --Virginia M. Kimball, Assumption College, Worcester, MA   ""This book is a scholarly work. The essays published in it are up-to-date and wide-ranging. . . . Every Christian should read this book because the more we know Mary, the more we will come to know her son."" --Denis S. Kulandaisamy, Marianum Pontifical Faculty of Theology, Rome FOR FRONT MATTER: ""This work begins with Professor Isabell Naumann's magisterial synthesis of the contemporary themes and official Church teachings in Mariology, followed by essays that integrate Mariology with topics in spirituality, Scripture, theological anthropology, aesthetics, ecclesiology, and historical theology. A number of the authors came of age during the pontificates of John Paul II and Benedict XVI, and their contributions showcase themes in the theology of these pontificates. This is the most engaging collection of essays on Mariology currently available in the Anglophone market."" --Tracey Rowland, St. John Paul II Chair of Theology, Professor, University of Notre Dame (Australia)   ""The reader of Mariology cannot but acknowledge the complexity of the topic. These contributions illustrate the richness of Marian traditions throughout Christendom, their connections with a range of doctrinal, missional, and devotional aspects, diachronically and in contemporaneity. They show likewise how these other dimensions feed back into Mariology, adding dynamism to the topic. Whilst this is a book about tradition, its message is not about the past; it is a message for our own time."" --Doru Costache, Senior Lecturer in Patristic Studies, Sydney College of Divinity, Australia   ""Here is a resource that every theologian interested in the study of Mary will find useful. The chapters, written by a variety of scholars,

Resounding Soul - 2877858162

It is surely not coincidental that the term ""soul"" should mean not only the center of a creature's life and consciousness, but also a thing or action characterized by intense vivacity (""that bike's got soul!""). It also seems far from coincidental that the same contemporary academic discussions that have largely cast aside the language of ""soul"" in their quest to define the character of human mental life should themselves be so--how to say it?--bloodless, so lacking in soul. This volume arises from the opposite premise, namely that the task of understanding human nature is bound up with and in important respects dependent upon the more critical task of learning to be fully human, of learning to have soul. The papers collected here are derived from a conference in Oxford sponsored by the Centre of Theology and Philosophy and together explore the often surprising landscape that emerges when human consciousness is approached from this angle. Drawing upon literary, philosophical, theological, historical, and musical modes of analysis, the essays of this volume vividly remind the reader of the power of the ancient language of soul over against contemporary impulses to reduce, fragment, and overly determine human selfhood. ""According to Aristotle, inquiry into the soul is one of the noblest human tasks. Such an inquiry, however, has all but disappeared: if the soul is not denied altogether, it is rarely thought about. The Resounding Soul helps us recollect this ancient knowledge, and at the same time opens up new avenues of reflection. By inviting us to lift our gaze in this bourgeois and pragmatic age, the editors have rendered a great service."" --D. C. Schindler, author, Associate Professor of Metaphysics and Anthropology, The John Paul II Institute ""These exacting essays variously suggest that the apparently problematic category of the soul nonetheless secures the reality of mind without reduction, and without a dualistic contrast to body and matter. Both body and mind live, and it is the living force of the soul which combines them in growth, motion and reflection."" --Catherine Pickstock Professor of Metaphysics and Poetics, Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge Eric Austin Lee (PhD) is Research Fellow/Deputy Director, North America at the Centre of Theology and Philosophy, University of Nottingham, where he also received his PhD. He is coeditor of the Veritas and KALOS book series. Samuel Kimbriel (MPhil; PhD) is a Teaching Fellow in philosophical theology at the University of Nottingham. He is the author of Friendship as Sacred Knowing: Overcoming Isolation (2014).

On the Ego and on God - 2875910649

On the Ego and on God Fordham University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In this most recent of his seminal studies on Descartes, Jean-Luc Marion brings together essays on the topics of the ego and of God, most of them previously unavailable in English. More than any other of Marion's works, the book illustrates the profound connection between his phenomenological concerns and his writings on Descartes. Liberating God and the self from the constrictions of metaphysics are fundamental tenets of Marion's theological and phenomenological work. This book highlights the same topics in the philosophy of Descartes. In Part I ("On the Ego"), Marion explores the alterity of the Cartesian ego, arguing that it is not as solitary as has often been assumed, and shows how Descartes' writings themselves are framed by dialogue. He explicates the status of the rule of truth in the Meditations, on the one hand highlighting how Descartes' argument is not circular, on the other hand showing how Pascal responds to and alters Descartes. He also elucidates the ambivalent status of the concept of substance in Descartes by returning to its roots in the philosophy of Suarez. In Part II ("On God"), Marion returns to the important Cartesian thesis of the creation of the eternal truths, setting it in the context of the claims of earlier thinkers and showing its demise in philosophies following Descartes. The study closes with a careful delineation of the concept of causa sui and a detailed survey of the idea of God in seventeenth-century thought.
