Idea Web serwisów powstała około 2000 roku w kręgach potentatów informatycznych takich jak IBM i Microsoft. Polega ona na automatycznej integracji heterogenicznych aplikacji biznesowych i jeset kontynuacją poprzednich paradygmatów programowania rozproszonego CORBA i RPC. W ramach tej inicjatywy powstało szereg ciekawych specyfikacji takich jak SOAP, WSDL, BPEL4WS czy UDDI, które jednak wraz z upływem czasu stawały się coraz bardziej skomplikowane i coraz bardziej problematyczne stawało się ich zastosowanie na szeroką skalę. Z drugiej strony, w środowiskach akademickich związanych z konsorcjum W3C, rozwijano koncepcję Semantic Web zainicjowaną przez samego Timothy Berners-Lee. Zasadniczy cel był podobny, jednak środkiem do jego realizacji miał być uniwersalny język ze ściśle zdefiniowaną semantyką tak, aby aplikacje działające na WWW mogły go rozumieć, czyli przetwarzać rónież na poziomie semantycznym, a nie tylko syntaktycznym. Tutaj również początkowe specyfikacje RDF i DAML były proste, a nawet zbyt proste w stosunku do zamierzonego celu. Zaczęto je komplikować, przez co ich praktyczna stosowalność stawała się coraz bardziej utrudniona. Obok tych dwóch głównych nurtów prowadzone były niezależne badania, a jednym z nich był projekt enTish realizowany w ramach grantów KBN i MEiN w IPI PAN oraz Akademii Podlaskiej w Siedlcach. W tej książce przedstawiono obszernie te trzy nurty. Książka jest przeznaczona dla informatyków i osó zainteresowanych najnowszymi technologiami informatycznymi i nie zakłada znajomości innych zaawansowanych technologii.
