Despite the dramatic expansion of modern technology, which defines and dominates many aspects of contemporary life and thought, the Western magical traditions are currently undergoing an international resurgence. How can we account for this widespread interest in ancient magical belief systems? In historical terms, Gnosticism and the Hermetica, the medieval Kabbalah, Tarot and Alchemy, and more recently, Rosicrucianism and Freemasonry, collectively laid the basis for the modern magical revival, which first began to gather momentum in Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. Modern Western magic has since become increasingly eclectic, drawing on such diverse sources as classical Greco-Roman mythology, Celtic cosmology, Kundalini yoga and Tantra, shamanism, chaos theory, and the various spiritual traditions associated in many different cultures with the Universal Goddess. In this overview of the modern occult revival, Nevill Drury traces the rise of various forms of magical belief and practice, from the influential Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn to the emergence of Wicca and Goddess worship as expressions of contemporary feminine spirituality. He also explores Chaos Magick and the occult practices of the so-called Left-Hand Path, as well as twenty-first-century magical forays into cyberspace. Drury believes that the rise of modern Western magic stems essentially from the quest for personal spiritual transformation and the direct experience of the sacred--a quest which the trance occultist and visionary artist Austin Osman Spare once referred to as "stealing fire from heaven." Considered in this light, modern Western magic can be regarded as a form of alternative spirituality in which the practitioners seek direct engagement with the mythic realm.

Serial Killers looks at every serial murder in Britain from the 'gay murders' of Michael Copeland in 1960 to the Ipswich murders of 2006 and from a victim-related perspective. Informed by direct experience of his work with serial killers, David Wilson's investigations identify people from vulnerable groups as being most at risk from Hunting Britons: elderly people, women involved in prostitution, gay men, runaways, throwaways, and children and kids moving from place to place. His book also looks at the phenomenon of serial killing in the context of 40 years of change in social attitudes, public mores and working methods and cultures across the criminal justice process. 'Lifts the lid on the social, institutional, political and economic contexts that make serial killing possible': John Muncie 'Reflects on serial homicides in ways which go beyond the usual focus ofż...żclinical characteristics. David Wilson paints on a much wider canvas': Keith Soothill 'Tackles the subjectż...żfrom a fresh perspective...żSerial Killers will undoubtedly stir up a great deal of debate': Roger Hood 'Perceptive and accessibleż...żand David Wilson offers a new analysis on how to understand the failureż...żto stop the Ripper killings': Douglas Sharp 'A timelyż-żand because of its qualityż-ża significant contribution to the field': Homicide Studies

Companion to Medieval Arms and Armour The Boydell Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

"A Companion to Medieval Arms and Armour" covers the entire period from the fifth to the fifteenth century, a thousand years which saw huge changes in military technology in most of the world's major civilisations. Arms and armour in Europe are the principal focus of the studies, but those of neighbouring civilisations, including the Byzantine Empire, eastern Europe, the steppes and the Islamic world, are also investigated, both for the impact upon them of European technological developments, and for their influence upon developments within western Europe. Arms and armour in Europe developed dramatically during the thousand years from the fifth to the fifteenth century. During this broad sweep of time civilisations rose and fell and population movements swept from east to west, bringing in their wake advances and modifications absorbed and expanded by indigenous populations. So although the primary focus of this book is on the arms and armour of Europe, it also includes neighbouring cultures where these had a direct influence on developments and changes within Europe, from late Roman cavalry armour, Byzantium and the East to the influence of the Golden Horde.A truly impressive band of specialists cover issues ranging from the migrations to the first firearms, divided into three sections: from the Fall of Rome to the Eleventh Century, Emergence of A European Tradition in the High Middle Ages, and New Influences and New Challenges of the Late Middle Ages; throughout there is particular emphasis on the social and technological aspects of medieval military affairs. Contributors include: Andrea Babuin, Jon Coulston, Tim Dawson, Claude Gaier, Michael Gorelik, John Haldon, Marco Morin, Helmut Nickel, David Nicolle, Ewart Oakeshott, Anne Pederson, Shihab Al-Sarraf, and Alan Williams.
