Maurice Ravel is famed as a master of orchestral colour, in the context not only of his own work but that of others, most notably Mussorgsky's awkward but brilliant piano original of Pictures at an Exhibition, and yet he wrote almost no music for the orchestra in origin, but instead arranged pieces conceived at and for the piano; so why not follow his lead and transcribe his music for another palette of instrumental colours? This was the rationale of the young and already-acclaimed members of the Orlando Quintet, who commissioned Mark Popkin and Wayne Peterson to fit three works of diverse origin within Ravel's output to the compact ensemble of the wind quintet, and the results are, as we can hear on this new recording, consistently engaging, imparting a pungency that never breaks the line or occludes Ravel's melodic genius for a sad song, such as one finds in the second movement of the string quartet, in part at least because the wind ensemble preserves that vocal quality which can be heard even in Ravel's 'abstract' instrumental music, which yet reflects the culture and vibrant colours of his native Provence, and the melancholy temperament of a deeply reserved individual, with no less precision than the operas and ballets from his pen.Other information:- Recorded December 2012.- A sheer delight: arrangements for wind ensemble of three of Ravel's masterpieces!- Ravel himself was an avid arranger/transcriber of his own music, a master orchestrator, with an incredible ear for timbre and colour. This is especially true of his one "abstract" work for the guitar, the Sonata Op.61, which amply fulfils Turina?s ambition to break free from a strictly local style, especially in its recitative-like Andante. From early in his career, Turina had been determined to write "European" art music as much as (if not more than) works reflecting the language, culture and landscape of his native Spain: It was not by chance that his op.1 was a piano quintet, conscientiously modelled on works he admired.That said, there are also distinctively Spanish works here, none more so than the exuberant homage to the memory of Tarrega, composer-prince of the Spanish guitar. It?s a work that runs through the gamut of Romantic guitar tricks and effects in its brief span, and receives here a virtuoso performance from the Flemish guitarist Jan Depreter. Depreter is a composer himself, and his recreative instincts can be heard to superb effect in the concentrated drama of Sevillana Op.29 and bold drama of the Fandanguillo, which without words seems to conjure a complete mise-en-sc?ne.Joaquin Turina is one of Spain?s foremost romantic composers, receiving his rightful stature next to the giants Albeniz and Granados.Turina left a small but important oeuvre of works written for solo guitar, which is issued on this new recording. Words like "inspiring," "expansive," and "moving" are regularly used to describe Sigur Ros's ( ), and yet the only words heard on the record itself are a handful of meaningless nonsense syllables. The album has no title-or rather, its title is no title: just an empty pair of parentheses. The intention being that listeners will fill in the parentheses with their own title, their own interpretation of the sounds on the record. The CD sleeve consists of twelve pages that are essentially blank, lacking song titles, liner notes or production credits. Instead, it contains only semi-translucent frosted images of abstract natural scenes (tree branches, clouds, etc.), on which the listener is free to inscribe their own notes-or no notes at all. And then there are the lyrics, sung in a deliberately unintelligible tongue called "Hopelandic" which the band invites listeners to interpret freely. Ethan Hayden's book doesn't try to fill in the gaps between the album's parentheses, but instead explores the ways in which listeners might attempt to do so. Examining the communicative powers of asemantic language, the book asks whether music can bring sense to nonsense.What happens to the voice when it stops singing conventional language: does it simply become another musical instrument, or is it somehow more "human"? What role does space play on ( )? And how do we interpret music that we cannot possibly understand, but feel very deeply that we do?
