Nirvana and Other Buddhist Felicities Cambridge University Press

This book presents an answer to the question: what is nirvana? Part I distinguishes between systematic and narrative thought in the Pali texts of Theravada Buddhism in South and Southeast Asia, arguing that nirvana produces closure in both, and setting nirvana in the wider category of Buddhist Felicities. Part II explores other Buddhist utopias (both eu-topias, 'good places', and ou-topias, 'no-places'), and relates Buddhist utopianism to studies of European and American utopian writing. The book ends with a close reading of the Vessantara Jataka, which highlights the conflict between the ascetic quest for closure and ultimate felicity, and the ongoing demands of ordinary life and society. Steven Collins discusses these issues in relation to textuality, world history and ideology in premodern civilizations, aiming to contribute to an alternate vision of Buddhist history, which can hold both the inside and the outside of texts together.

Opis - The publication American Historical Sources from 1945 to 2016, which is divided chronologically, contains eighty-eight documents. It is preceded by a set of the most fundamentally important documents for the United States, on which its whole political system was built: The Declaration of Independence and The Constitution of the United States of America. The texts gathered in this book vary in size and significance; some are reproduced in their entirety, others in fragments, but their selection was meant to illustrate the complexity of contemporary U.S. history. The book is a collection of various types of primary sources, including bills, treaties, resolutions, statements, reports, minutes, transcripts from Congress Committee meetings, records of lawsuits, speeches by dignitaries, presidential speeches, election debate transcripts, letters, memoirs, excerpts of books, magazines and newspapers. The theory behind the selection of texts for this volume was that through appropriate selection and arrangement of primary sources, it would be possible to show the dynamic nature of the events occurring in the United States over the last century. The chosen texts should also contribute to a better understanding of the important role played by the United States on the international stage from the end of World War II to the present. This publication is mainly addressed to students of International Relations, Political Science, American Studies and History. From the experience gained through lecturing on Foreign and Security Policy of the United States and International Relations at the Institute of History and Political Sciences at the University of Bialystok, I believe that an analysis of primary sources is one of the most important tasks in the process of gaining scientific knowledge in this field. Seminar paper from the year 2002 in the subject American Studies - Literature, printed single-sided, grade: 1 (A), University of Frankfurt (Main) (Institute for England and American Studies), course: Harlem Renaissance, 17 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This seminar paper will sketch some of the elements of the cultural Zeitgeist that shaped and was reflected in Nella Larsen s writings. But it will concentrate on the novels that she left behind: Quicksand and Passing. An important topic Larsen is dealing with is race-identity. Larsen assimilates these themes in her two novels, not by representing the lower-class problem, but more by focusing on the life and problems of middle-class females. It is more the psychological than the sociological side she portrays. This paper demonstrates that race identity and race dualism reflects Larsen s own life story. First I will give an introduction on the Harlem Renaissance era. Then I will focus on Nella Larsen s life. I will examine her two novels Quicksand and Passing to find out how race identity and race dualism is assimilated in her novels.

Opis - The Chair of American Studies (CAS) of the Instuitute of American Studies and Polish Diaspora was founded in 1991 as an intcrfaculty research institution of the Jagiellonian University with the aim of teaching Polish students about various issues concerning the United States of America. In 1995 a program was launched of doctoral studies of the Center (until the present moment there have been 18 doctors educated at CAS). In October 2001 CAS 1aunched its program of graduate (M.A.) American Studies and, one year later undergraduate program of studies. At present in the Institute there are enrolled 650 day-system and extramural students and almost 60 doctoral students. The research conducted at the Chair for American Studies includes American history, U.S. foreign policy, contemporary American society, development of the American civilization, U.S. film and theatre, American literature and art, U.S. legal and political system, Native Americans? history and culture, U.S. sports, and many more. Interdisciplinary character of the studies attracts many young people who want to broaden their knowledge and experience concerning various aspects of historical and contemporary American reality. In March 2007, CAS has opened ?M.A. Program in Transatlantic Studies? directed primarily to foreign students who would like to study in Kraków politlcal and cultural aspects of Transatlantic relations. The international conference U.S. Foregin Policy: Theory, Mechanizms, and Practice which took place in May 2007 at the Institute, was an intensive workshop devoted to historical and modern methods and approaches in analyzing U.S. foreign policy. The aim of the conference was to serve as a forum for sharing ideas and discussing new issues in re1ation between the United States and the rest of the world. The organizers wanted, in particular, to stimulate further collaboration of American Studies specialists from the participating institutions and help to formulate proposals of future joint research programs.
