Englishmen Born and Bred? - Cultural Hybridity and Concepts of Englishness in Hanif Kureishi's The Buddha of Suburbia and Zadie Smith's White Teeth VDM Verlag Dr. Mueller E.K.
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
The idea and image of Englishness has changed a lot withinthe last decades. As Yasmin Alibhai-Brown has memorably observed, modern Britain is \"more reflected in multiracial families, curryand the fiction of Zadie Smith than the Royal family, fish andchips, and Shakespeare?\". This book analyses the works of twomixed-race English writers: Hanif Kureishi and Zadie Smith. HanifKurishi's novel The Buddha of Suburbia was published in 1990,Zadie Smith's debut novel White Teeth a decade later in 2000. Bothauthors deal with questions of identity, racism and culturalhybridity amongst second- and third-generation immigrants living inEngland. The aim of this book is to show how the images ofEnglishness and the attitude towards hybridity have changed between1990 and 2000. Whereas Kureishi's novel focuses primarily onracism, Smith portrays millennial London as a city where hybridity? either by birth or by experience ? is an integral part ofeveryday life.

Digital archives are transforming the Humanities and the Sciences. Digitized collections of newspapers and books have pushed scholars to develop new, data-rich methods. Born-digital archives are now better preserved and managed thanks to the development of open-access and commercial software. Digital Humanities have moved from the fringe to the center of academia. Yet, the path from the appraisal of records to their analysis is far from smooth. This book explores crossovers between various disciplines to improve the discoverability, accessibility, and use of born-digital archives and other cultural assets.

Christina: Twins Born as Light Govinda Verlag
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Book 1 of our best selling book series about Christina von Dreien - now in English translation:Christina (born 2001) is a young woman from Toggenburg, Switzerland. She was born with greatly expanded consciousness and thus belongs to a new generation of young evolutionary thinkers who recognise, describe and live human existence as a complexity of quantum physics, neuropsychology and spirituality. She has always shown remarkable insight into today's world events and one cannot help but be astonished by her high ethics, her wisdom and inner peace that hint at a new dimension of being human.Without being overchallenged in any way, Christina displays a completely natural handling of a multitude of paranormal gifts such as multi-dimensional perception, aura perception, clairvoyance, telepathy, telekinesis, contact with other levels of existence, animal and plant communication and the like. From birth, she has also been consciously connected to higher dimensional spheres and civilisations of light.A harbinger of a new stage in human evolution, Christina, together with her twin sister Elena, incarnated on Earth to spread light and peace. She says, "The lights are already here, all over the world. It just needs someone to press the 'On' button."The first book tells the story of Christina's extraordinary birth, childhood and youth up to the age of 16, from the perspective of her mother, Bernadette. For Christina, it was a time of becoming accustomed to three-dimensionality, of being trained and tested in order to prepare herself for her life's task. Christina summarises this task with the three core concepts of freedom, truth and love."I am here to help human beings to reach a state of expanded consciousness. With an expanded horizon, they will be able to see what is not working properly on this planet today for themselves. Then they can develop new solutions and perspectives in every area of life that will be successful in the long term. But human beings have free will. The decision is theirs alone." (Christina von Dreien)

Men born to distinction do not always develop it in their homeland. Sometimes trans plantation taps routes to hidden sources of concern for the embracing of novel con cepts or the clarification of man's behavior, illuminating this understanding in the lan guage of their adopted tongue. Such a one was Joseph Conrad, the Polish sailor whose new vision graced our literature long after his death in 1924. Such a one also is the author this book, who was born in that same year to carryon his country's vigor and resourcefulness in our time. He is numbered among those distinguished emigres whose contributions to our culture and progress emanated from the trials and tribulations of the political upheavals, persecutions, and wars of Europe. Like many others, he has brought sound traditions and learning from his native land to enhance the new and less developed of what was only recently a frontier land. Watersheds in world events impose themselves willy-nilly on our lives. One such time was 1946, when the author of this book left his native land and set out for the West. He spent six months in London learning English and then moved to Ireland, where he trained in medicine and also absorbed novel ways and a new culture, includ ing the writings of Swift and Joyce. This young medical graduate's potential was soon recognized by his teacher in neurology at Belfast, who with foresight predicted great accomplishment.

Book 2 of our best selling book series about Christina von Dreien - now in English translation: Christina (born 2001) is a young woman from Toggenburg, Switzerland. She was born with greatly expanded consciousness and thus belongs to a new generation of young evolutionary thinkers who recognise, describe and live human existence as a complexity of quantum physics, neuropsychology and spirituality. She has always shown remarkable insight into today's world events and one cannot help but be astonished by her high ethics, her wisdom and inner peace that hint at a new dimension of being human. This second book continues the story - again from the perspective of her mother, Bernadette - of Christina's development: the end of her school days, the revelation of her life plan and the impressive start of her work in public. Further topics in Book 2 are: the universal rules of life; how to follow our individual soul path and unfold our personal potential; support from our spiritual companions; practical tips for increasing individual and collective vibration frequency; the silent revolution of unconditional love; the importance of grounding for "time-change" people; the essential link between lateral thinking and spirituality; holistic science and positive technology; four possible consciousness orientation choices; the five-dimensional future of humanity on Earth and the approaching golden age. "We are all equal in our innermost core. No one is more advanced than anyone else, no light is brighter than any other, and no task in life is more important than any other. We are all divine beings who are experiencing being human, and not human beings who are becoming divine." (Christina von Dreien) Please note that Books 1 and 2 are also available worldwide as eBooks. The third and second centuries BC witnessed, in the Greek world, a scientific and technological explosion. Greek culture had reached great heights in art, literature and philosophy already in the earlier classical era, but it was in the age of Archimedes and Euclid that science as we know it was born, and gave rise to sophisticated technology that would not be seen again until the 18th century. This scientific revolution was also accompanied by great changes and a new kind of awareness in many other fields, including art and medicine. What were the landmarks in the meteoric rise of science 2300 years ago? Why are they so little known today, even among scientists, classicists and historians? How do they relate to the post-1500 science that we are familiar with from school? What led to the end of ancient science? These are the questions that this book discusses, in the belief that the answers bear on choices we face today.
