Inne 1

According to conventional wisdom, the national identity of the Jordanian state was defined by the ruling Hashemite family, which has governed the country since the 1920s. But this view overlooks the significant role that the "Arab street"?in this case, ordinary Jordanians and Palestinians?played and continues to play in defining national identity in Jordan and the Fertile Crescent as a whole. Indeed, as this pathfinding study makes clear, "the street" no less than the state has been a major actor in the process of nation building in the Middle East during and after the colonial era. In this book, Betty Anderson examines the activities of the Jordanian National Movement (JNM), a collection of leftist political parties that worked to promote pan-Arab unity and oppose the continuation of a separate Jordanian state from the 1920s through the 1950s. Using primary sources including memoirs, interviews, poetry, textbooks, and newspapers, as well as archival records, she shows how the expansion of education, new jobs in the public and private sectors, changes in economic relationships, the establishment of national militaries, and the explosion of media outlets all converged to offer ordinary Jordanians and Palestinians (who were under the Jordanian government at the time) an alternative sense of national identity. Anderson convincingly demonstrates that key elements of the JNM's pan-Arab vision and goals influenced and were ultimately adopted by the Hashemite elite, even though the movement itself was politically defeated in 1957. * How the "Arab street" helped forge the national identity of Jordan

The state of Israel is often spoken of as a haven for the Jewish people, a place rooted in the story of a nation dispersed, wandering the earth in search of its homeland. Born in adversity but purportedly nurtured by liberal ideals, Israel has never known peace, experiencing instead a state of constant war that has divided its population along the stark and seemingly unbreachable lines of dissent around the relationship between unrestricted citizenship and Jewish identity. By focusing on the perceptions and histories of Israel's most marginalized stakeholders - Palestinian Israelis; Arab Jews, and non-Israeli Jews - Atalia Omer cuts to the heart of the Israeli-Arab conflict, demonstrating how these voices provide urgently needed resources for conflict analysis and peace building. Navigating a complex set of arguments about ethnicity, boundaries, and peace and offering a different approach to the renegotiation and reimagination of national identity and citizenship, Omer pushes the conversation beyond the bounds of the single narrative and toward a new and dynamic concept of justice - one that offers the prospect of building a lasting peace.

The July-August 2014 issue of New Eastern Europe is our first issue as a bimonthly magazine. It is also a special issue as it celebrates the 25th anniversary of the fall of communism in the countries of Central Europe. Above all, this issue, titled "Our (R)Evolutions", not only reflects on the 25 years of peaceful evolution that have taken place in Poland, but it links this discussion with the revolution that has taken place in Ukraine. In an exclusive interview with New Eastern Europe, Poland?s former president, Lech Wałęsa contemplates on his role in the changes that led to today?s Poland. He admits that he was a destroyer but failed at building, a lesson that he learned too late. Wałęsa?s confession is followed by a portrait of Tadeusz Mazowiecki, a builder of the new Poland. In his recollections from 1989, Aleksander Hall makes a realistic assessment writing that ?Mazowiecki started his mission to build democracy in a situation where practically the entire state apparatus was still rooted in the previous system.?Freedom prevailed in many of the countries of the former Soviet bloc after 1989. However, as Krzysztof Czyżewski observes, ?We needed time to understand that without equality and fraternity, freedom brings enslavement.? His view is confirmed by Shana Penn, who writes that in Poland: ?The forestalled equal rights issues never got their fair due in the wake of Solidarity?s victory.?The reflections on the last 25 years in Poland are followed by essays from a new generation of writers and journalists. Essays by the region?s young voices in countries like Romania, Ukraine and Georgia, illustrate the cautious optimism that is felt in this new generation.Essays and analysis on Ukraine by Mykola Riabchuk, Milan Lelich, Jakub Parusinski, Paweł Pięniążek and Roman Kabichiy assess the situation in this context as well and gives the reader deeper insight into those issues which still remain unresolved in Ukraine.

"This is an exemplary work...It is thorough, clear, and wonderfully detailed. What's more, it is co-authoredin a real, rather than a fictive sense, bringing to the reader a kind of authenticity and bite that is rarely available...Certainly specialists will be fascinated with this study, but it is so readable, so interesting, so innovative, that I think it will appeal to a wide audience...[It] should be a cornerstone in Native American studies. And essential reading in women's studies, northern studies, and to anyone curious about alternative ways of seeing the world and living a life. It ultimately stands alone, proof that there is progress in anthropological method and description."--Michael Dorris, author of The Broken Cord. "There is pure gold here for those who want to understand the rules of the old ways...[The book] has a convincing sureness, an intensity which cannot be denied, a strong sense of family...Candidly, and often with sly humour, the three women discuss early white-Indian relations, the Klondik gold rush, the epidemics, the starvation, the healthy and wealthy times, and building of the Alaska Highway...Integrity is here, and wisdom. There is no doubting the authenticity of the voices. As women, they had power and they used it wisely, and through their words and Cruikshank's skills, you will change your mind if you think the anthropological approach to oral history can only be dull."--Barry Broadfoot, Toronto Globe and Mail. Of Athapaskan and Tlingit ancestry, Angela Sidney, Kitty Smith, and Annie Ned lived in the southern Yukon Territory for nearly a century. They collaborated with Julie Cruikshank, an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, to produce this unique kind of autobiography. Cruikshank's books include The Stolen Woman: Female Journeys in Tagish and Tutchone Narrative (1982).

Laird Barron has emerged as one of the strongest voices in modern horror and dark fantasy fiction, building on the eldritch tradition pioneered by writers such as H. P. Lovecraft, Peter Straub, and Thomas Ligotti. His stories have garnered critical acclaim and have been reprinted in numerous year's best anthologies and nominated for multiple awards, including the Crawford, International Horror Guild, Shirley Jackson, Theodore Sturgeon, and World Fantasy awards. "A Taste for Brown Sugar" boldly takes on representations of black women's sexuality in the porn industry. It is based on Mireille Miller-Young's extensive archival research and her interviews with dozens of women who have worked in the adult entertainment industry since the 1980s. The women share their thoughts about desire and eroticism, black women's sexuality and representation, and ambition and the need to make ends meet. Miller-Young documents their interventions into the complicated history of black women's sexuality, looking at individual choices, however small--a costume, a gesture, an improvised line--as small acts of resistance, of what she calls "illicit eroticism." Building on the work of other black feminist theorists, and contributing to the field of sex work studies, she seeks to expand discussion of black women's sexuality to include their eroticism and desires, as well as their participation and representation in the adult entertainment industry. Miller-Young wants the voices of black women sex workers heard, and the decisions they make, albeit often within material and industrial constraints, recognized as their own.

'Funny, sharp explications of what these sometimes not-very-nice women were up to, and how they sometimes made idiots of . . .but read on!' - Margaret Atwood, author of The Handmaid's TaleThe Greek myths are among the world's most important cultural building blocks and they have been retold many times, but rarely do they focus on the remarkable women at the heart of these ancient stories. Stories of gods and monsters are the mainstay of epic poetry and Greek tragedy, from Homer to Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides, from the Trojan War to Jason and the Argonauts. And still, today, a wealth of novels, plays and films draw their inspiration from stories first told almost three thousand years ago.But modern tellers of Greek myth have usually been men, and have routinely shown little interest in telling women's stories. And when they do, those women are often painted as monstrous, vengeful or just plain evil. But Pandora - the first woman, who according to legend unloosed chaos upon the world - was not a villain, and even Medea and Phaedra have more nuanced stories than generations of retellings might indicate. Now, in Pandora's Jar: Women in the Greek Myths, Natalie Haynes - broadcaster, writer and passionate classicist - redresses this imbalance. Taking Pandora and her jar (the box came later) as the starting point, she puts the women of the Greek myths on equal footing with the menfolk. After millennia of stories telling of gods and men, be they Zeus or Agamemnon, Paris or Odysseus, Oedipus or Jason, the voices that sing from these pages are those of Hera, Athena and Artemis, and of Clytemnestra, Jocasta, Eurydice and Penelope.

The Rational Male - Positive Masculinity Createspace Independent Publishing Platform

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Building once more on the core works of The Rational Male by Rollo Tomassi, Positive Masculinity is the newest supplemental reading in the series designed to give men, not a prescription, but actionable information to build better lives for themselves based on realistic and objective intersexual dynamics between men and women. Rational and pragmatic, the book outlines four key themes: Red Pill Parenting, The Feminine Nature, Social Imperatives and Positive Masculinity. Free of the pop-psychology pablum about parenting today, Red Pill Parenting is primarily aimed at the fathers (and fathers-to-be) who wanted more in depth information about raising their sons and daughters in a Red Pill aware context. While not an instruction manual, it will give men some insight into how to develop a parenting style based on Red Pill principles as well as what they can expect their kids to encounter from a feminine-primary social order determined to 'educate' them. The Feminine Nature is a collection of essays, revised and curated, that specifically address the most predictable aspects of the female psyche. It outlines and explores both the evolutionary and socialized reasons for women's most common behaviors and their motives, and how men can build this awareness into a more efficient way of interacting with them. Social Imperatives details how the female psyche extrapolates into western (and westernizing) cultural narratives, social dictates and legal and political legislation. This is the Feminine Imperative writ large and this section explores how feminism, women's sexual strategy and primary life goals have molded our society into what we take for granted today. Also detailed is the 'women's empowerment' narrative, and the rise of a blank-slate egalitarian equalism masking as a form of female supremacism that has fundamentally altered western cultures. The last section, Positive Masculinity, is comprised of essays, reformed and expanded upon, that will give men a better idea of how to define masculinity for themselves from a conventional and rational perspective. In an era when popular culture seeks to dismiss, ridicule, shame and obscure masculinity, this section and this book is intended to raise men's awareness of how fluid redefinitions of masculinity have been deliberately used to disempower and feminize men by a feminine-primary social order. This book is the third in of series complements to The Rational Male, the fifteen-year core writing of author/blogger Rollo Tomassi from therationalmale.com. Rollo Tomassi is one of the most prominent voices in the globally growing, male-focused online consortium known as the "Manosphere" as well as one of the 'Godfathers' of intersexual Red Pill awareness.
