The key stylistic transformation of the period was from Expressionism to Constructivism, as artists and writers, against a volatile background of war and revolution, saw the opportunity literally to construct a new world through their work. In 2004 the European Union and NATO each added ten new member states, most from the post-communist countries of Eastern and Central Europe. In order to prepare for membership, these countries had to make many thousands of institutional and legal adjustments. Indeed, they often tried to modernize in just a few years, implementing practices that evolved over many decades in Western Europe. This book emphasizes the way that policy elites in Central and Eastern Europe often 'ordered from the menu' of established Western practices. When did this emulation of Western practices succeed and when did it result in a fiasco? Professor Jacoby examines empirical cases in agriculture, regional policy, consumer protection, health care, civilian control of the military, and military professionalism from Hungary, the Czech Republic, Poland, Bulgaria, and the Ukraine. The book addresses debates in institutionalist theory, including conditionality, Europeanization, and external influences on democratic and market transitions.

This collection of essays aims to look afresh at an institution which, although already the subject of numerous academic analysis and extensive legal research, remains of central importance to all who are interested in the development of European Union law and policy. This book describes the earliest reconstructable stages of the prehistory of English. It outlines the grammar of Proto-Indo-European, considers the changes by which one dialect of that prehistoric language developed into Proto-Germanic, and provides a detailed account of the grammar of Proto-Germanic. Legal history helps us to understand our modern law. It explains why the law has become what it is. It lays open the premises on which the modern law is based. It constitutes a rich source of experience which is as valuable for the development of modern legal doctrines as for law reform. The scientific collective monograph Central and Eastern Europe and the World in the 20th Century. Continuities and Discontinuities is based mainly on the contributions of the international conference held in September 2021 at the University of Pécs (Hungary) in cooperation with the University of West Bohemia in Pilsen (Czech Republic) on the phenomenon of continuity and discontinuity in the 20th century. The individual chapters, authored by experts from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, the Federal Republic of Germany or Slovakia, deal with continuity and discontinuity problems, issues and challenges not only in the history of Central and Eastern Europe, but also focus on non-European areas in this context.
