History of Contemporary Chinese Art - 2873999686

History of Contemporary Chinese Art Springer Verlag, Singapore

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Chinese art has experienced its most profound metamorphosis since the early 1950s, transforming from humble realism to socialist realism, from revolutionary art to critical realism, then avant-garde movement, and globalized Chinese art. With a hybrid mix of Chinese philosophy, imported but revised Marxist ideology, and western humanities, Chinese artists have created an alternative approach - after a great ideological and aesthetic transition in the 1980s - toward its own contemporaneity though interacting and intertwining with the art of rest of the world. This book will investigate, from the perspective of an activist, critic, and historian who grew up prior to and participated in the great transition, and then researched and taught the subject, the evolution of Chinese art in modern and contemporary times. The volume will be a comprehensive and insightful history of the one of the most sophisticated and unparalleled artistic and cultural phenomena in the modern world.

Contemporary Ceramic Art Thames & Hudson Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

No longer considered merely decorative, ceramic art has broken free from the dusty display cases to which it was once relegated and is now taking centre stage in contemporary galleries. Although often integrating traditional modelling, firing and glazing techniques into their output, the 90 artists featured here invite us to look at ceramics in a different way. Whether creating monumental installations or intricate miniatures, imaginary beasts or life-size human figures, they subtly blur the borders between art and craft, sometimes conceiving witty or unnerving twists on traditional ceramic forms, sometimes using cutting-edge technology, conceptual thinking and new platforms to push the boundaries of clay and broaden its appeal.Packed with works that are questioning and provocative, disturbing and seductive, this is an exciting overview of a booming field.

Minimal Art and Artists in the 1960s and After Crescent Moon Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

MINIMAL ART AND ARTISTS This book is is a study of Minimal art and artists, particularly painters, sculptors, 3-D, installation and land artists. All of the key practitioners and theoreticians of the still-influential 1960s Minimal art movement and style are studied here: Donald Judd, Robert Morris, Carl Andre, Frank Stella, Robert Ryman, Robert Smithson, Brice Marden, Dan Flavin, Eva Hesse, Sol LeWitt, and many land artists (such as Robert Smithson, Christo, James Turrell and Michael Heizer). Chapters include: Minimal aesthetics; Minimal painting and painters; Minimal sculptors and sculpture;  Minimal art and land artists; and Minimal art today. Fully illustrated. 232 pages. Large format. The text has been fully revised for this edition, with new illustrations added. www.crmoon.com. The Minimal artists did not consider themselves a group; they did not produce manifestos; they did not agree on ćsthetics or working practices (though some were friends); they tended not to be directly involved in political art (Minimal art was more conservative than counter-culture); and they disliked the term 'minimalism'. It tended to be the critics (as usual) who came up with the terms for the new art. Lucy Lippard used the term 'structurist', 'dematerialization' and 'eccentric abstraction'; Michael Fried had 'literalist' and 'objecthood'; Peter Hutchinson used 'Mannerist'; Barbara Rose coined 'ABC Art'; Lawrence Alloway had 'systematic painting'; Robert Morris took up 'unitary forms' and 'anti-form'; and Donald Judd employed 'speciżc objects'. Probably the premier Minimal artist (and philosopher) is Donald Judd; Judd stands at the centre of Minimal art, and no account of Minimalism is complete without placing Judd in the foreground. Robert Smithson, Frank Stella, Donald Judd, Ad Reinhardt, Robert Morris and Carl Andre have been among the most lucid of theorists among artists. In the 1960s and 1970s, it seemed as if every artist went through a Minimal period at some time in their career, as well as a painting-as-sculpture period, and a brush with performance art (and perhaps body art). Both a Conceptual art phase and an on-going installation art preoccupation were mandatory for contemporary artists, it seems. All contemporary art can be viewed as basically Conceptual art, and a increasing proportion of it is installation art.

"Jason C. Kuo's in-depth study of the paintings of Gao Xingjian significantly enriches our understanding of a major cultural polymath. This lavishly illustrated book enables us to make important connections between painting and writing, a type of synthesis often downplayed by western post-Enlightenment tendencies toward cultural specialization but very much at the heart of the Chinese literati tradition." żPaul Gladston (University of Nottingham), principal editor of the Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art and author of Contemporary Chinese Art: A Critical History. "In The Inner Landscape: The Paintings of Gao Xingjian, Jason C. Kuo offers his readers a multifaceted lens through which to frame an engagement with the remarkable pictorial, filmic, and literary art of the Chinese writer and 2000 Nobel laureate in literature, Gao Xingjian. A central theme in his oeuvre is reflection on his life as a writer in self-exile in France, a life at once burdened with the memory of his homeland and yet artistically liberating. Kuo illuminates our understanding of the meaning and significance of his art by situating it within a critical discussion of the contemporary context of global modernity, a context that challenges our notions of national cultural identity in an age of mobile subjectivity and the deterritorialization of cultural practices." żStephen J. Goldberg (Hamilton College), author of Dislocating the Center: Contemporary Chinese Art Beyond National Borders. "The Inner Landscape: The Paintings of Gao Xingjian presents almost 300 paintings by the contemporary artist, poet, film-maker, author, and Nobel Laureate Gao Xingjian. Jason C. Kuo's erudite study not only details Gao's development as an intellectual, but also contextualizes and explores his attitudes toward writing, painting, and film-making in the interstices of 'East' and 'West'." żKatharine P. Burnett (University of California, Davis), author of Dimensions of Originality: Essays in Seventeenth-Century Chinese Art Criticism. "The Inner Landscape: The Paintings of Gao Xingjian by Jason C. Kuo is a most thought-provoking and intelligent study of the art of Gao Xingjian. Kuo, driven by a desire for synthesis in his scholarship, brings a modernist practice to bear on a long tradition of intellectual discourse in China." żFrances Klapthor, Baltimore Museum of Art.

Seminar paper from the year 2012 in the subject Art - Extra-European art, grade: A+, University of California, Los Angeles, course: Contemporary Chinese Art Seminar, language: English, abstract: This term paper explores the increasing presence of Chinese collectors of contemporary Chinese art. It is driven by the idea that collectors produce or cultivate meaning in the larger canon of art history. Based on Belk s analysis of collecting as a consumption activity (1991), the motivations of these collectors and the resulting implications for contemporary art are investigated. The development of patronage and art appreciation throughout China s tumultuous past, and the current barren cultural landscape have given rise to a collector who differs greatly to the traditional model. At the same time, it is hypothesized that there exists a more deeper-lying uniquely Chinese altruism next to the amalgam of social refinement, identity, nationalistic and financial motives. On the basis of this, is suggested that whereas the current nature of collecting contemporary art in China does not yet demonstrate the high level of critical thinking and sophistication that would be beneficial for the development of the contemporary art scene, there nevertheless lies potential for a more healthy development in the years to come.
