Peter Blume - 2870388181

Peter Blume University of Pennsylvania Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Russian American artist Peter Blume was one of the earliest practitioners of surrealist painting in the United States, and his elaborately detailed and dreamlike compositions helped define American Modernist art. Blume worked out the themes of his ambitious large-scale paintings through dozens of drafts in different media, slowly developing layers of allegory and imagery that dramatized the creative process, cultural memory, urban expansion, destruction, rebirth, and political power. Showcasing over a hundred paintings and drawings, as well as sketches, sculpture, and ephemera from all periods of his six-decade career, Peter Blume: Nature and Metamorphosis provides unprecedented insight into the artist's process, his relationship to Surrealism, and his profound visions of twentieth-century social and spiritual upheaval. This comprehensive volume draws on a selection of previously unpublished interviews with Blume and selected examples of the artist's writings, and reflects previously unknown aspects of Blume's work, including a poster design made during World War II, a major painting not seen in public since 1961, and extensive photographs and drawings from his archives.Essays by Samantha Baskind, Sergio Cortesini, Robert Cowley, David McCarthy, Sarah Vure, and Robert Cozzolino delve into topics such as Blume's relationship with an international community of artists and writers and their work, his engagement with politics in the 1930s and 1940s, his vital role in the evolution of Surrealism in America, the relationship between automatic drawing and precise painting in his own practice, and the influence of his Jewish heritage on his work. The first retrospective of this influential artist in several decades, Peter Blume: Nature and Metamorphosis brings the artist's significance within the history of American art into sharp focus. Distributed for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Contributors: Samantha Baskind, Sergio Cortesini, Robert Cowley, Robert Cozzolino, David McCarthy, Sarah Vure.

What Has the Government Done to Our Money? [Reprint of First Edition] Martino Fine Books

2011 Reprint of 1963 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Murray Newton Rothbard (1926 - 1995) was an American author and economist of the Austrian School who helped define capitalist libertarianism and popularized a form of free-market anarchism he termed "anarcho-capitalism." Rothbard wrote over twenty books and is considered a centrally important figure in the American libertarian movement. Building on the Austrian School's concept of spontaneous order, support for a free market in money production and condemnation of central planning, Rothbard advocated abolition of coercive government control of society and the economy. He considered the monopoly force of government the greatest danger to liberty and the long-term well-being of the populace, labeling the State as nothing but a "gang of thieves writ large"-the locus of the most immoral, grasping and unscrupulous individuals in any society. Rothbard concluded that all services provided by monopoly governments could be provided more efficiently by the private sector.

Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus Martino Fine Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

2015 Reprint of 1922 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition. Not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. The "Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus" (Latin for "Logical-Philosophical Treatise") is the only book-length philosophical work published by the German-Austrian philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein in his lifetime. It was an ambitious project - to identify the relationship between language and reality and to define the limits of science - and is recognized as a significant philosophical work of the twentieth century. Considered by some to be the greatest philosopher of the 20th century, Ludwig Wittgenstein played a central, if controversial, role in 20th-century analytic philosophy. He continues to influence current philosophical thought in topics as diverse as logic and language, perception and intention, ethics and religion, aesthetics and culture. Contains an introduction by Bertrand Russell.

Graffiti Lives - 2870299060

Graffiti Lives New York University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

On the sides of buildings, on bridges, billboards, mailboxes, and street signs, and especially in the subway and train tunnels, graffiti covers much of New York City. Love it or hate it, graffiti, from the humble tag to the intricate piece (short for masterpiece), is an undeniable part of the cityscape. In Graffiti Lives, Gregory J. Snyder offers a fascinating and rare look into this world of contemporary graffiti culture. A world in which kids, often, shoplift for spray paint, scale impossibly high places to find a great spot to "get up," run from the police, journey into underground train tunnels, fight over turf, and spend countless hours perfecting their style. Over the ten years Snyder studied this culture he even created a few works himself (under the moniker "GWIZ"), found himself serving as a lookout for other artists engaged in this illegal activity, spent time in the train tunnels in search of new work, created a blackbook for writers to tag, and took countless photographs to document this world - over sixty included in the book.A combination of amazing "flicks" and exhilarating prose, Graffiti Lives is ultimately an exploration into how graffiti writers define themselves. Snyder details that writers are not bound together by appearance or language or birthplace or class but by what they do. And what they do is reach for fame, painting their names as prominently as they can. What's more, he discovers that, though many public officials think graffiti writing will only lead to other criminal activity, many graffiti writers have turned their youthful exploits into adult careers - from professional aerosol muralists and fine artists to designers of all kinds, employed in such fields as tattooing, studio art, magazine production, fashion, and guerilla marketing. In fact, some of the artists featured have gone on to international acclaim and to their own gallery shows. Snyder's illuminating work shows that getting up tags, throw-ups, and pieces on New York City's walls and subway tunnels can lead to getting out into the city's competitive professional world. Graffiti Lives details the exciting, risky, and surprisingly rewarding pursuits of contemporary graffiti writers.

Theory of Collective Behavior - 2878625587

Theory of Collective Behavior Quid Pro, LLC

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The golden anniversary edition of THEORY OF COLLECTIVE BEHAVIOR is a modern republication of a sociological and social psychology classic. Adding a reflective new Preface by the author and an extensive, analytical Foreword by MIT's Gary Marx, it is an authorized and painstaking edition - not just scanned and forgotten like most such reprints today. As part of the 'Classics of the Social Sciences' Series by Quid Pro Books, it features quality formatting such as legible figures and tables, a complete subject index, and an extensive bibliography (including updating references for the new Foreword). Moreover, the original page numbers are embedded into the text for continuity of citations, syllabus, and referencing. As Gary Marx notes in his Foreword, "The book is elegant, original, carefully crafted and forcefully argued. In its totality, it is a fine example of an effort to define a field, identify major types and systematically connect central variables. This is done to organize an amorphous collection of behaviors that seem to be intuitively linked, but which had not previously enjoyed an equivalent framework for identifying those links. Smelser's innovative treatment of the form known as the craze nicely illustrates this. Drawing on his extensive knowledge of economic history and applying stages of the value-added process, he shows commonalities across areas previously seen as distinct - such as economic swings, expressive crowds and fads and fashion - and offers a systematic way to differentiate these from other forms. The sense of craftsmanship and the care in construction can serve as a model for theorizing and for the effort to both acknowledge and yet reduce the indeterminacy of social phenomena." Marx concludes, "As 2011 events such as the Tsunami in Japan and the unexpected uprisings in the Middle East suggest, the importance of the field and the need to advance knowledge is not just historical. This book remains a rich contribution toward that advancement." NEIL J. SMELSER is professor emeritus of sociology at the University of California, Berkeley.
