Piazzolla: El Otro Astor, Music For Guitar And Strings Brilliant Classics
Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna
Most albums of music by the undisputed master of Argentine tango, Astor Piazzolla are still issued at full price but following the success of ?Café 1930? (94896) with guitarist Andrea Dieci and violinist Piercarlo Sacco, Brilliant Classics presents some of the composer?s best-loved ensemble works. The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires is a chic 20th-century counterpart to Vivaldi?s cycle of violin concertos, and has been paired as such in performance and on record by Gidon Kremer among others, as Piazzolla?s music has always been susceptible to sympathetic arrangement; here the cycle of four character pieces is performed in a version (created by the guitarist Giorgio Mirto, who has made many albums for Brilliant Classics) nearer to its origins as a piece for Piazzolla to play on bandoneon with his tango quartet. The five Tango Sensations are heard in an arrangement adapted from one made by Manuel Barrueco, where the solo bandoneon part has been reassigned to the guitar, rather than the more common arrangements for chamber orchestra which arose after Piazzolla?s death in 1990; the recording sessions with the Kronos Quartet were the last he attended, and the music itself may reflect a ?late? character of melancholy which is shared by the concerto he wrote in 1985 for bandoneon and guitar. Here the parts for string orchestra are played one to a part by the members of QuartettOrfeo, an exciting young string quartet based in Rome. The album is rounded off by an arrangement made especially for this recording of the Ave maria which has become such a signature tune for Piazzolla, and featured on many film soundtracks. The album overall is a fine demonstration of Yo-Yo Ma?s remarks about Piazzolla: ?His music is endlessly passionate, full of yearning and at the same time tremendously contemporary. There?s a quote to the effect that Piazzolla is the Ellington of Argentina, and in a way it?s true. The music grew in him and he adeptly incorporated the influence of his surroundings whether from New York, Paris or Buenos Aires.?This fascinating disc contains lesser known music by Astor Piazzolla, in arrangements for guitar, (accordion) and string quartet, a formation with which Piazzolla himself performed many of his works. The music, vintage Piazzolla, breathes the pulse of Buenos Aires, the bohemian atmosphere, the yearning, the joy, the passion and the ever present Tango melancholy. Included are The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, The Five Tango Sensations, the Concerto for Bandoneon, Guitar and Strings and the Ave Maria.Performed by virtuoso guitarist Alessio Nebiolo (winner of numerous International guitar Competitions), the Quartett Orfeo, and Nadio Marenco, accordion.Booklet contains excellent liner notes and artist biographies.

Duport: Etudes for Cello Solo Brilliant Classics
Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna
Born in Paris in 1749, Jean-Louis Duport, cellist and composer, also known as 'le jeune' -- to distinguish him from his elder brother Jean-Pierre (1741--1818), called 'l'ainé' -- is today regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of the development and evolution of cello technique. In 1806 he published his cello treatise Essai sur le doigté du violoncelle et sur la conduite de l'archet, a work that became the fundamental reference point for all subsequent schools of cello teaching. At the end of the treatise, we find the 21 Etudes for Violoncello (with a second cello part as accompaniment), works that explain and put into practice the methods described within. They are very difficult, highly virtuosic exercises that present a wide selection of tones and bowings as well as an extraordinary richness of compositional ideas, and in this way the Essai can be viewed as an anthology of concert pieces with real artistic value rather than just a mere practical handbook.Made following precise philological criteria and with attention to the performing practice of the age, this recording includes a second cello as accompaniment (the instrument assumes the role of continuo, developing the performance and enlivening the listening experience) and employs original instruments with gut strings and historical bows. Thanks more to their difficulty and pedagogical reputation, the Etudes may have been rarely recorded, a fact which only adds value to the present issue, but they repay repeated listening for their élan, and will be required listening not only for cello students seeking to master the Etudes themselves but also for anyone with a passing interest in the music of Classical-era France.Other information:- New recording made in 2013.- Jean Louis Duport was one of the most important and influential composers for the cello in the first half of the 19th century. A virtuoso himself, he wrote a treatise on the cello, introducing new techniques, expanding the possibilities of the instrument to a great extent.- As a demonstration of his new instrumental style he wrote 21 Etudes, in which all his inventions are incorporated. They are extremely difficult, requiring a virtuoso technique and deep musical insight, lifting the etude above the level of a mere exercise to a work of art.- This recording, a world premiere, uses a second cello as a continuo basis, and is played with gut strings, as was usual in Duport's time.- A must for cellists, cello lovers and anyone interested in early 19th-century French instrumental music!

Beethoven: Complete Cello Sonatas & Variations Brilliant Classics
Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna
Beethoven's oeuvre only comprises a small collection of works for cello and piano, but that the composer was an accomplished writer for this combination of instruments is evident from the fact that Jean-Louis Duport, one of Frederick II's court cellists and one of the most revered musicians of his day, incorporated many of the techniques found in the Op.5 sonatas into his instruction manual for cello. The two works each contain only two movements, and the absence of a slow movement was probably to avoid the problem of dynamic imbalance between the instruments (which would have been accentuated in adagio passages) -- something that is also the case with the Op.68 sonatas, composed in 1807. Only with the second Op.102 sonata does the composer finally replace the slow introduction, as found in No.1 and all of the above works, with a full-scale slow movement, one that precedes the massive fugal finale that was to form such an intrinsic part of Beethoven's late-period works. Also featured are the three delightful sets of variations for cello and piano, each modelled on a different aria from Handel's opera Judas Maccabeus and Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, and each (just like the sonatas) placing the piano on an equal footing with the cello throughout. The works are an engaging addition to a collection that marks the return of Israeli/Dutch cellist Timora Rosler and Hungarian pianist Klára Würtz, whose previous Brilliant Classics release 'Cello Rhapsody' (9157) was released to critical acclaim, and which provides a snapshot of the composer's stylistic development over a period of nearly 20 years.Other information:- Filling "only" two CD's, the complete works for cello and piano are quintessential and vintage Beethoven. The two youthful Opus 5 sonatas are written in virtuoso concerto style, with an especially glittering role for the piano (Beethoven was a tremendous pianist in his early years), the sonata Op. 69 is in the expansive, sonorous and deep-feeling tonal language of Beethoven's Middle-Period, whereas the two Late sonatas Op. 102 are marvels of originality, experiment, "quirkiness" and humanity.- The two musicians Timora Rosler and Klára Würtz have been playing together for more than 15 years, having won several chamber music prizes. They performed the Beethoven cycle several times in concert over the years, and their interpretation has ripened to such an extent that the time came to record it. And here it is: every note alive and vibrant, played with gusto and feeling, alternating melancholy and joy, sadness and sheer fun.- Contains notes on the music and detailed artist biographies.- Recorded 19--23 January 2013, Sala congressi del Parco naturalistico di Onara, Padua, Italy.

Hindemith: Orchestral Works Brilliant Classics
Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna
Here's a collection unrivalled in its scope within the current catalogue, of orchestral works by one of the most prolific of 20th-century, Paul Hindemith, whose reputation as a purveyor of 'useful' music has perhaps overshadowed his colourful orchestrations and often powerfully dramatic transformations of a wide range of extra-musical inspirations. His masterpiece may be the opera he based on the life and work of the painter of the Isenheim alterpiece, Matthias Grünewald, but the Mathis der Maler symphony he derived from its music is hardly less emotive. Nobilissima visione, originally a ballet on the life of St Francis, is as visionary as its title implies; and the Symphonia Serena is another under-estimated masterpiece of quiet grandeur. This set contains the most important works of Hindemith: the symphony Mathis der Maler, the orchestral suite Nobilissima Visione, der Schwanendreher (for viola solo, Hindemith's own instrument), Pittsburg Symphony, the moving Trauermusik for viola and strings, and the sumptuous Symphonic Metamorphosis after themes by Carl Maria von Weber. The final disc pays homage to Hindemith's quest to involve the younger generations in music-making, including his 'play for children' Wir bauen eine Stadt, which was originally performed by school children in Berlin. The performances here are all given by native and experienced Hindemith interpreters, in fine studio recordings from the 1970s.Other information:- Paul Hindemith was one of the most important and influential composers of 20-th century Germany. His eclectic style incorporated diverse influences such as expressionism, neo-classicism and even jazz. His music is energetic, rhythmically vibrant, witty and joyous, but also able to express deeper and tragic feelings.- Excellent and authoritative performances by the Staatskapelle Dresden & Otmar Suitner and the Dresden Philharmonic & Herbert Kegel.- An important and well deserved tribute to a great composer!- Booklet contains extensive liner notes on the works.- Several of these works otherwise unavailable.

Organ Music For Christmas Brilliant Classics
Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna
The French word ?noël? is closely associated with the organ, and this new recording from the Breton organist Christian Lambour introduces the listener to works from the 17th to the 20th century. Noëls provided organists with the opportunity to introduce variations on popular tunes, often making use of Christmas carols and shepherd songs. The evocative sound of these traditional melodies ? sung around the fire during advent ? are assured to get you in l?esprit de Noël!The album takes in some of the country?s most assured writers for the instrument, from the well-known figures of César Franck and Théodore Dubois to lesser-known names like Michel Corrette and Alexis Chauvet ? notorious among his contemporaries as ?le petit Bach? because of his contrapuntal style ? whom the listener may be not so familiar with. Many of the contributors held distinguished organist positions in Parisian churches, such as Claude Balbastre at Notre-Dame de Paris and two members of the Dandrieu family ? both at one time organist at Saint-Barthélemy en Cité, Paris. The melody incorporated into Puer nobis nascitur by Pierre Dandrieu will be recognised by many as a popular Christmas carol still commonly sung today. The music of Pere Franck, as his students affectionately knew him, and Alexandre Guilmant provide a contrast with their noëls which were revived in line with the emerging symphonic tradition of the 19th century. Christian Lambour?s masterful recital is rounded off with movements from Boëly?s Messe du jour de Noël, published in 1842 for performance on Christmas Day.The historic organ used on this recording in the former Benedictine Abbey of Neu St Johann in Switzerland, built in 1779, is instrumental in bringing the music alive. An attractive and beautifully compiled programme of French organ music for Christmas. The Noël is the French pendant of the Christmas Carol, a popular tune of often pastoral character. Organist Christian Lambour selected a range of French organ works based on the Noël, spanning 3 centuries from the 17-th century to the 20-th, by composers Dandrieu, Corrette, Balbastre, Guilmant, Franck, Dubois, Boëly.Beautifully played on the superb historic organ (1779) of the Benedictine Abbey of Neu St. Johann in Switzerland.Other information:Booklet includes liner notes, artist biographyRecorded in 2014 on an historic instrument
