We can?t be sure that Bach wrote any concertos specifically for the oboe aside from the C minor concerto BWV1060 ? in which it?s partnered by the violin in an exercise of pathos out of all proportion to the modest dimensions of the work itself. The other concertos here come down to us as harpsichord concertos, in which guise they do not sit entirely happily, and it seems more than likely that Bach, as both unhappy Kapellmeister of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig and far more content in his role supplying music, musicians and concerts to Zimmermann?s coffee house in the city, would have been glad to take advantage of the soloistic potential of a resident oboist to craft these Italianate concertos that exploit both the instrument?s origins in pastoral idiom (notably BWV1053, in the ?pastoral? key of F major, and its gently swaying siciliano middle movement in 6/8), as well as more urbane and learned counterpoint of which he was undisputed master among his peers.

Bach recordings ? recordings that celebrate the genius of a composer who was, on account of his harmonic language, preoccupation with improvisation and cultivation of the empfindsamer Stil, undoubtedly the most strikingly individual talent among Johann Sebastian Bach?s sons.Central to Carl Philipp Emanuel?s output was the clavier, with the composer writing more than 50 concertos for this instrument ? an astounding number considering how new a genre the keyboard concerto still was at the time, and a small number of which are detailed on this disc. While J.S. Bach is usually credited with elevating the harpsichord from its traditional role to a solo concerto instrument, his harpsichord concertos are almost certainly arrangements of earlier compositions for oboe, violin etc., and Carl Philipp Emanuel?s collection therefore stands as the first important one of its kind. The works indeed number among the finest of their time, their quality reinforced by the fact that a good few were subject to regular revisions by the composer. Emanuel?s own outstanding ability as a keyboard player is also reflected in the concertos, most of which were conceived with players of advanced technique in mind ? the sparkling cascades of the soloist?s arpeggios in the final movement of the E major Concerto Wq14 come especially to mind.Performing Wq3, Wq6 and Wq14 and bringing to the fore the infectious vitality of these works is Brilliant Classics regular Pieter-Jan Belder. Marcello?s Oboe Concerto is one of the best-loved and most performed works in the instrument?s repertoire. Originally written in C minor, it is heard here in its D minor transcription by J.S. Bach, who clearly appreciated the work?s special qualities. With its astonishingly sophisticated use of melody and harmony for its time, its lyrical and graceful outer movements and the exquisitely beautiful central Adagio that has made it so famous, this work is widely regarded as Marcello?s finest masterpiece (if, indeed, it was composed by Marcello: in his fascinating liner notes, musical director Giorgio Sassi suggests that the piece could have been composed by Albinoni or even Bach himself).This release also features Marcello?s six concertos published under the title ?La Cetra?. The concertos could be regarded as a last outpost of the late-Baroque style, with features that anticipate the development of Classicism, and they showcase a remarkably wide range of expression, atmosphere and timbre, which is done full justice in these consummate performances by acclaimed early music specialists Insieme Strumentale di Roma. The ensemble boasts an extensive and enthusiastically received discography, and has been praised for its ?stylish and sweetly modulated performances? and ?warmth, spirit and sensitivity?
