Irit Amiel urodziła się w Częstochowie w 1931 roku jako Irena Librowicz. Wojnę przeżyła w Polsce w częstochowskim getcie, a po ucieczce z niego ? na ?aryjskich papierach?. Opuściła Polskę w 1945 roku i nielegalną drogą, przez obozy dipisów w Niemczech, we Włoszech i na Cyprze w 1947 roku dotarła do Palestyny. Od tego czasu mieszka w Izraelu. Studiowała języki, historię i literaturę. Jest pisarką, poetką i tłumaczem, tworzy po polsku i po hebrajsku. Debiut poetycki Irit Amiel, tom wierszy Egzamin z Zagłady, miał trzy wydania po hebrajsku (1994, 1995 i 1998) i dwa po polsku (1994, 1998). W Polsce ukazały się też dwa jej kolejne tomiki: Nie zdążyłam (Łódź 1998) i Wdychać głęboko (2002). Niniejsza edycja jest poszerzonym powtórzeniem tego właśnie zbioru. Zbiór opowiadań Osmaleni (Warszawa 1999), cieszący się dużym zainteresowaniem czytelników i krytyki, w 2000 roku został nominowany do Nagrody Literackiej Nike. Tę samą nominację w 2009 roku otrzymał prozatorski tom Podwójny krajobraz (włoski przekład ukazał się w 2010 roku). Tom Osmaleni został przez Autorkę przetłumaczony na hebrajski, następnie wydano go po węgiersku, angielsku, niemiecku i francusku.Z polskiego na hebrajski Irit Amiel przełożyła książki M. i M. Mar­iańskich (1987), Mieczysława Frenkla (1988), wiersze Lei Rozenzweig (1993) i Abramka Koplowicza (1995). W izraelskich czasopismach literackich publikowała przekłady opowiadań Leo Lipskiego, Marka Hłaski, Henryka Grynberga i Hanny Krall, wiersze Wisławy Szymborskiej oraz kilka sztuk teatralnych. Opracowała angielską antologię najważniejszych współczesnych poetów hebrajskich. Z hebrajskiego przetłumaczyła też jeden z najważniejszych dramatów Hanocha Lewina, Requiem, który został opublikowany w tomie: Hanoch Lewin, Ja i Ty i Następna Wojna. Teatr życia i śmierci (Kraków 2009). W 2014 roku ukazała się jej książka autobiograficzna Życie - tytuł tymczasowy.Irit Amiel was born in Poland in 1931 as Irena Librowicz.She survived the Second World War having escaped from the Częstochowa ghetto and living under false Aryan papers. Via illegal routes and displaced persons camps in Germany, Italy and Cyprus she reached Palestine in 1947. She has lived in Israel ever since, where she studied history and literature. She works as a poet, writer and translator in two languages, Polish and Hebrew.Irit Amiel?s debut volume of poetry Egzamin z Zaglady had three editions in Hebrew (1994, 1995, 1998) and was published twice in Polish (1994, 1998). The subsequent two collections of poems were also printed in Poland: Nie zdążyłam (Łódź 1998) and Wdychać głęboko (2002). This publication is an enhanced, bilingual edition of the latter. Her volume of short stories Osmaleni (Warszawa 1999) received widespread praise and was nominated in Poland for the prestigious Nike Prize. Her collection of short stories Podwójny krajobraz was published in 2009 and was shown the same appreciation. It was translated into Italian a year later. The book Osmaleni was translated by the author into Hebrew, then published in Hungarian, English, French and German. Irit Amiel has translated the writing of M. and M. Mariańscy (1987), Mieczysław Frenkel (1988), poems of Lea Rozenzweig (1993) and Abramek Koplowicz (1995) into Hebrew. Her translations of Polish works by Leo Lipski, Marek Hłasko, Henryk Grynberg and Hanna Krall, as well as Wisława Szymborska?s poems and a number of theatre plays have been published in Israel. She has prepared a Polish anthology of key contemporary Hebrew poets. She also translated into Polish one of the most significant plays by Hanoch Lewin, Requiem, which was published in the volume: Hanoch Lewin, Ja i Ty i Następna Wojna. Teatr życia i śmierci (Me and You and the Next War. Theatre of Life and Death; Kraków 2009)In 2014 her autobiography Życie ? tytuł tymczasowy was published.

Political theorist and critic hooks continues the work of Black Looks (not reviewed), exploring the politics of representation, aesthetics, and the place of the African-American woman artist. This collection of 18 essays in art criticism and five interviews with prominent black women artists is hooks's response to the paucity of African-American art critics, particularly women. Drawing effectively on her personal experience of art as both maker and viewer, hooks urges that we take art seriously as a focus for struggle, emphasizing its transformative power. At the same time, she eschews essentialist arguments that would reduce all black art to protest art, arguments that have repeatedly been narrowed to discussions of "good" and "bad" images. Instead, she calls for "a revolution in the way we see, the way we look." What is at stake here, she says, is nothing less than control over the representation of the self; she points to the empowering nature of personal photography as an example. The book itself is an odd creature. The first half is a rocky road full of academic artcrit jargon of the kind usually found in the pages of artforum (which is where one of these pieces first appeared), and the early dialogues, with Carrie Mae Weems and Alison Saar, are unsatisfying, with hooks dominating the conversations. But the second half of the book is a return to form for one of the most astute cultural and political writers in the country today. Essays on black vernacular architecture, representation of the black male body, and the creative process of women artists are powerful and concise, and the dialogues with Emma Amos, Margo Humphreys, and particularly LaVerne Wells-Bowie are a real contribution to our understanding of the situation of black women artists. It is impossible to imagine hooks writing a book devoid of interest, and the second half of this one is excellent indeed. (Kirkus Reviews)
