Dramatic Works of Lord Byron, Vol. 2 of 4 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Dramatic Works of Lord Byron, Vol. 2 of 4: Including Manfred, Cain, Doge of Venice, Sardanapalus, and the Two Foscari, Together With His Hebrew Melodies and Other Poems Manfred alone. - Scene a Gothic Gallery. - Time Midnight. Man. The lamp must be replenish'd, but even then It will not burn so long as I must watch: My slumbers - if I slumber - are not sleep, But a continuance of enduring thought, Which then I can resist not: in my heart There is a vigil, and these eyes but close To look within; and yet I live, and bear The aspect and the form of breathing men. But grief should be the instructor of the wise; Sorrow is knowledge: they who know the most Must mourn the deepest o'er the fatal truth, The Tree of Knowledge is not that of Life. Philosophy and science, and the springs Of wonder, and the wisdom of the world, I have essay'd, and in my mind there is A power to make these subject to itself - But they avail not: I have done men good. And I have met with good even among men - But this avail'd not: I have had my foes. And none have baffled, many fallen before me - But this avail'd not: - Good, or evil, life. Powers, passions, all I see in other beings. Have been to me as rain unto the sands. Since that all-nameless hour. I have no dread, And feel the curse to have no natural fear. Nor fluttering throb, that beats with hopes or wishes, Or lurking love of something on the earth. - Now to my task. - About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Works of Lord Byron, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Works of Lord Byron, Vol. 1 Two great collections of Byron's letters have been already printed. In Moore's Life which appeared in 1830, 561 were given. These, in FitzGreene Halleck's American edition of Byron's Works published in 1847, were increased to 635. The first volume of a third collection, edited by Mr. W. E. Henley, appeared early in 1897. A comparison of the number of letters contained in these three collections down to August 22, 1811, shows that Moore prints 61, Halleck 78, and Mr. Henley 88. In other words, the edition of 1897, which was the most complete so far as it goes, added 27 letters to that of 1830, and 10 to that of 1847. But it should be remembered that by far the greater part of the material added by Halleck and Mr. Henley was seen and rejected by Moore. The present edition, down to August 22, 1811, prints 168 letters, or an addition of 107 to Moore, 90 to Halleck, and 80 to Mr. Henley. Of this additional matter considerably more than two-thirds was inaccessible to Moore in 1830. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Autobiography of Leigh Hunt, Vol. 1 of 3 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Autobiography of Leigh Hunt, Vol. 1 of 3: With Reminiscences of Friends and Contemporaries In the summer of 1825 Leigh Hunt had been for three years a sojourner in Italy, whither he had gone at the invitation of Lord Byron and Shelley to edit that ill-fated magazine the Liberal. During these three years a series of disastrous events had occurred, all more or less bearing directly on Hunts life, and all described at considerable length and with much circumstantial detail in the following pages. The death of Shelley, the failure after four numbers of the Liberal, the unfriendly attitude taken up by Lord Byron, and his subsequent death, were sufficient in themselves to make it highly desirable for Hunt to return to England. Italy however had a great attraction for him, and he lingered on at Florence for fully three months, until September, 1825, when his return home became imperative, owing to the action of his brother John, who contended that Leigh Hunt, by his protracted absence, had forfeited his proprietary rights in the Examiner. One of the immediate obstacles to his return was that he was, nominally at any rate, without resources. The expenses of a journey to England were at that time considerable, and this prodigal son of letters had no means whatever wherewith to defray them. It was in these circumstances that Hunts old friend and admirer, Vincent Novello, made an arrangement with Henry Colburn, the publisher, for the advance of a sum of money on account of a book. The book thus arranged for was originally to have consisted of a collection of the authors scattered writings, with an autobiographical introduction. Hunt arrived in England in October, 1825, but no new book appeared bearing his name until 1828, when a large quarto volume was published with the title of Lord Byron and some of his Contemporaries; with Recollections of the Authors Life and of his Visit to Italy. Frankenstein Penguin

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A terrifying vision of scientific progress without moral limits, Mary Shelley's "Frankenstein" leads the reader on an unsettling journey from the sublime beauty of the Swiss alps to the desolate waste of the arctic circle. This "Penguin Classics" edition is edited with an introduction and notes by Maurice Hindle. Obsessed with the idea of creating life itself, Victor Frankenstein plunders graveyards for the material with which to fashion a new being, shocking his creation to life with electricity. But this botched creature, rejected by its creator and denied human companionship, sets out to destroy Frankenstein and all that he holds dear. Mary Shelley's chilling gothic tale was conceived when she was only eighteen, living with her lover Percy Shelley near Lord Byron's villa on Lake Geneva. It would become the world's most famous work of Gothic horror, and Frankenstein's monster an instantly-recognisable symbol of the limits of human creativity. Based on the third edition of 1831, this volume contains all the revisions Mary Shelley made to her story, as well as her 1831 introduction and Percy Shelley's preface to the first edition. This revised edition includes as appendices a select collation of the texts of 1818 and 1831 together with "A Fragment" by Lord Byron and Dr John Polidori's "The Vampyre: A Tale". Mary Shelley (1797-1851) was the only daughter of the author and political philosopher William Godwin, and Mary Wollstonecraft, author of "A Vindication of the Rights of Woman". In 1814 she eloped with poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, whom she married when his first wife died in 1816. She is best remembered as the author of "Frankenstein", but she wrote several other works, including "Valperga" and "The Last Man". If you liked "Frankenstein", you might enjoy Bram Stoker's "Dracula", also available in "Penguin Classics".

Pieces of Eight Forgotten Books

Excerpt from Pieces of Eight: A Sequence of Twenty Four War-Sonnets Here you have a knockout blow with a vengeance. The sonnet as a whole is not one which we can approve from a technical or a sentimental point of view, but it has points. Henley might have plumed himself on the line about the creaking corsets and the last line, a tour de force, in its way reminds us of the withering ironies of Byron. It is only fair to Mr. Chaloner to add that not all his sonnets are concerned with . . . general thumping. Some of them show the tenderer emotions proper to a poet. We like him best, however, in his character as metrical bruiser. He is always on the side of the angels even if he is frequently over vigorous; and his book is well worth possessing. We gather that he has undergone personal troubles of no light or of ordinary nature, and it is pleasant to note that, despite these troubles, he still retains a sane and reasonable outlook upon life, for when he likes he can be quite pleasantly humorous instead of acridly bitter." It is very meet and right that the discoverer - for that is what Lord Alfred Douglas - the then editor of the Academy - undoubtedly was - it is very meet and right that Lord Alfred Douglas - the descendant of that famous Marquis of Queensbury who compiled the rules that formerly guided the mighty right of the peerless John L. Sullivan - of Boston, Massachusetts - the former champion of the world - and now control the dusky member of his formidable successor Jack Johnson - the terror of 'white hopes' - but only until a second John L. Sullivan - shall arise, and put him down and out, for the count - it is very meet and right that the discoverer of the hardest metrical hitter America has as yet turned out, should be the lineal descendant of the Marquis of Queensbury. It is a case of "In hoc signo rences" with us. We at once printed the Academy's review in the edition of "Scorpio" sent out for review to the American press; and consequently our work was treated on the strength thereof - with a respect - from the vast majority of critics, from ocean to ocean - North and South - which was highly satisfactory. Now, alas, the situation has changed. The very correct and desirable attitude of neutrality - advised and urged by President Woodrow Wilson, concerning the European war - has closed the columns of newspapers North as well as South.
