KamińskiJakie to dziwne, jakie tajemnicze, jakie straszne w swej tajemniczości...Jeszcze sześćset pięćdziesiąt lat temu na części ziem dzisiejszego państwa polskiego, tam gdzie przepływają Narew i Biebrza, gdzie wznoszą się Suwałki, Augustów i Białystok, mieszkali Jadźwingowie. Byli oni narodem licznym, składającym się z kilkudziesięciu plemion, mieli własny odrębny język, własne wierzenia, swoiste obyczaje. Żyli niezależnem życiem politycznem.A dziś? Śladu po nich nie zostało. Dosłownie żadnego śladu.Legendy i baśnie nie dochowały o Jadźwingach żadnych wspomnień; archeologowie nie natrafili dotychczas na żaden grób, na żaden zabytek jaćwieski; lingwiści nie próbują nawet w językach polskim, białoruskim i litewskim doszukiwać się słów jaćwieskich; historycy nie posiadają najmniejszego kawałka pergaminu, zapisanego ręką Jadźwinga.I obecnie nikt nie zajmuje się losem zanikłego narodu. Nawet uczeni. Siedemdziesiąt lat mija, gdy ostatni raz napisano o Jadźwingach rozprawę naukową.Jadźwingowie nie zostawili po sobie żadnego śladu, ale obcy, ich sąsiedzi, przypadkowo i urywkowo zanotowali o nich garść szczegółów. Na tych notatkach cudzoziemskich opiera się cała nasza wiedza o Jadźwingach.Jadźwingowie nie byli, jak my, Słowianami; należeli do grupy ludów litewskich. Język ich jednak różnił się wyraźnie od litewskiego, pruskiego i łotewskiego. Religja też prawdopodobnie tworzyła odrębny systemat. Liczni książęta plemienni, będąc zarazem czarodziejami i wróżbitami, pośredniczyli między ludem a tajemniczemi i groźnemi bóstwami, wcielonemi w zwierzęta lub uosobionemi w żywiołowych potęgach natury.Normańscy książęta, rządzący Rusią, pierwsi rozpostarli swe zaborcze szpony nad Jaćwieżą. Raz po raz potężne drużyny Skandynawów olbrzymów ciągnęły na rosłych koniach lub skrzydlatych łodziach na daleki zachód. A w stołecznym Nowogrodzie stary mnich Greczyn wyliczał na tablicy paschalnej drżącą ręką te sławne pochody. W lieto 6491*) idie Wołodimir na Jat'wiahi i wzia ziemliu ich.
