Kurt Vonnegut: The Making Of A Writer Seven Stories Press,U.S.
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
The first and only YA biography of the great American novelist and humanist comes out on the 100th anniversary of his birth.Kurt Vonnegut, author of Slaughterhouse Five, Breakfast of Champions, Cat's Cradle, and many other brilliant novels and short stories, is one of our greatest American writers, often using science fiction, humor, and a humanist view of society, religion, politics, and human nature in his writing to show us the absurdity and the loveliness of life on earth. Born in 1922, Vonnegut's life was full of great fortune and great despair: his family was wealthy, but lost everything in the market crash of 1929; he was the youngest son in a loving family, until his mother fell into a depression and committed suicide; he joined the army in WWII with great pride for our country, but experienced instead a world of destruction and horror. These and many others were the experiences that made him a writer. But how did he channel the highs and lows of his life into great writing?Dan Wakefield, a friend and mentee of Vonnegut's for decades and a fellow Hoosier, distills the facts including Kurt's novels, essays, interviews, letters and personal experiences, into a beautiful telling of the making of a writer. Using the second person "You," it is as though Wakefield is a friend walking through Kurt's life alongside him, a guide for readers to his extraordinary life. Here is an American life, a burgeoning artist's life to inspire anyone who has read Vonnegut's work or who themselves aspire to write.

18 years old and fresh out of high school, Karl Ove Knausgaard moves to a tiny fisherman's village far north of the polar circle to work as a school teacher. He has no interest in the job itself - or in any other job for that matter. His intention is to save up enough money to travel while finding the space and time to start his writing career. Initially everything looks fine: He writes his first few short stories, finds himself accepted by the hospitable locals and receives flattering attention from several beautiful local girls. But then, as the darkness of the long polar nights start to cover the beautiful landscape, Karl Ove's life also takes a darker turn. The stories he writes tend to repeat themselves, his drinking escalates and causes some disturbing blackouts, his repeated attempts at losing his virginity end in humiliation and shame, and to his own distress he also develops romantic feelings towards one of his 13-year-old students. Along the way, there are flashbacks to his high school years and the roots of his current problems. And then there is the shadow of his father, whose sharply increasing alcohol consumption serves as an ominous backdrop to Karl Ove's own lifestyle.

Point Made Oxford University Press Inc
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
With Point Made, legal writing expert, Ross Guberman, throws a life preserver to attorneys, who are under more pressure than ever to produce compelling prose. What is the strongest opening for a motion or brief? How to draft winning headings? How to tell a persuasive story when the record is dry and dense? The answers are "more science than art," says Guberman, who has analyzed stellar arguments by distinguished attorneys to develop step-by-step instructions for achieving the results you want. The author takes an empirical approach, drawing heavily on the writings of the nation's 50 most influential lawyers, including Barack Obama, John Roberts, Elena Kagan, Ted Olson, and David Boies. Their strategies, demystified and broken down into specific, learnable techniques, become a detailed writing guide full of practical models. In FCC v. Fox, for example, Kathleen Sullivan conjures the potentially dangerous, unintended consequences of finding for the other side (the "Why Should I Care?" technique).Arguing against allowing the FCC to continue fining broadcasters that let the "F-word" slip out, she highlights the chilling effect these fines have on America's radio and TV stations, "discouraging live programming altogether, with attendant loss to valuable and vibrant programming that has long been part of American culture." Each chapter of Point Made focuses on a typically tough challenge, providing a strategic roadmap and practical tips along with annotated examples of how prominent attorneys have resolved that challenge in varied trial and appellate briefs. Short examples and explanations with engaging titles-"Brass Tacks," "Talk to Yourself," "Russian Doll"-deliver weighty materials with a light tone, making the guidelines easy to remember and apply. In addition to all-new examples from the original 50 advocates, this Second Edition introduces eight new superstar lawyers from Solicitor General Don Verrilli, Deanne Maynard, Larry Robbins, and Lisa Blatt to Joshua Rosencranz, Texas Senator Ted Cruz, Judy Clarke, and Sri Srinvasan, now a D.C. Circuit Judge.Ross Guberman also provides provocative new examples from the Affordable Care Act wars, the same-sex marriage fight, and many other recent high-profile cases. Considerably more commentary on the examples is included, along with dozens of style and grammar tips interspersed throughout. Also, for those who seek to improve their advocacy skills and for those who simply need a step-by-step guide to making a good brief better, the book concludes with an all-new set of 50 writing challenges corresponding to the 50 techniques.

Selected topics in general and inorganic chemistry Politechnika Gdańska
CHEMIA
The authors would like to explain here the reasons for writing yet another handbook of general and inorganic chemistry. This book is meant for students of interdisciplinary Environmental Protection and Management course, who study inorganic chemistry for several weeks only. Within so short time careful selection of material had to be done. Our aim was to make students acquainted with very basic chemical knowledge such as writing and balancing chemical equations, doing stoichiometric calculations and distinguishing between a true solution and suspended matter. We hope that on completion of this course students will be able to recognize at least some of chemical problems. There are many good inorganic chemistry handbooks and we recommend some of the titles here. We are perfectly aware of the fact that we are not capable of writing a better one. The problem is that those books are rather expensive and out of reach for an average student of Chemical Faculty. Thus, with full consciousness of creating a book, which did not stand a chance of being better in any respect than its precedents, we felt obliged to write it. We hope that our effort will be of some use. CONTENTS: Introduction PART A. BASIC CHEMICAL PRINCIPLES (Anna Dołęga) 1. CHEMICAL EQUATIONS Problems Supplementary problems 2. STOICHIOMETRY 2.1. Kazuo Ishiguro Bloomsbury Publishing
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Kazuo Ishiguro is one of the finest and most accomplished contemporary writers of his generation. The short story author, television writer and novelist, included twice in Granta's list of Best Young British Writers, has over the past twenty-five years produced a body of work which is just as critically-acclaimed as it is popular with the general public. Like the writings of Ian McEwan, Kazuo Ishiguro's work is concerned with creating discursive platforms for issues of class, ethics, ethnicity, nationhood, place, gender and the uses and problems surrounding artistic representation. As a Japanese immigrant who came to Great Britain in 1960, Ishiguro has used his unique position and fine intellectual abilities to contemplate what it means to be British in the contemporary era. This guide traces the main themes throughout Ishiguro's writing whilst it also pays attention to his short stories and writing for television. It includes a new interview with the author, a preface by Haruki Murakami and discussion of James Ivory's adaptation of The Remains of the Day.

Foundations of Macroeconomics Addison Wesley Publishing Company
Biznes
In Foundations of Macroeconomics, Robin Bade and Michael Parkin provide a serious, yet accessible economics course that is focused on helping students understand the basic principles of economics, connecting these principles to today's economic issues, and developing a lasting interest in economics as a relevant part of their own lives. Foundations of Macroeconomics features a tightly constructed pedagogical approach that never wavers from its goal - to give students an in-depth understanding of important economic principles in a way that is clear, concise, and concerned every step of the way with engaging students' interest and understanding. This text is shorter than most and focused on key concepts - but not watered down. The glue that holds together the chapters and the entire teaching/learning package is the "Checkpoint" feature. Bade and Parkin know that the best time to review material is when it's fresh in students' minds. "Checkpoints" reinforce the key points of the chapter by amplifying concepts with a full page of practice problems and solutions that immediately reinforce the learning objectives and strengthen students' understanding of the material. Efoundations, the text's Web site, includes a complete eText, integrated links to the eStudy Guide, Foundations Interactive, Economics in the News, and a full range of Web resources including self assessment quizzes with links back to the eText. Features and Benefits Each chapter focuses on three to four core concepts to allow students to thoroughly explore, analyze, and review a concept before moving on to the next one. Learning objectives are explicitly linked at the beginning of each chapter to the core concepts and to checkpoints and chapter summaries. "Checkpoints" guide students through the material in a step-by-step approach that takes the guesswork out of learning. "Checkpoints" are linked explicitly to specific pages in the Study Guide and corresponding eFoundations Web site material. Chapters are formatted with a carefully balanced blend of text and graphics that provide visual clarification without clutter or unnecessary distractions. A stimulating variety of graphs, tables, and charts illustrate key concepts clearly and concisely. The explanation of a graph always falls on the same page as the graph itself. The writing style throughout is fluid and conversational, reinforcing the underlying principle that economics is an everyday issue that can be addressed in everyday language. A comprehensive, dynamic electronic environment caters to different learning styles - eText, eStudy Guide, Foundations Interactive, four types of PowerPoint slides - some with video links, Web links, and audio - and more. A focus on long-run trends, but with an early, simple introduction to AS-AD, gives students a model to understand short-run fluctuation. Introductory chapters individually tailored to macro issues.
