"Frontiersmen in Blue" is a comprehensive history of the achievements and failures of the United States Regular and Volunteer Armies that confronted the Indian tribes of the West in the two decades between the Mexican War and the close of the Civil War. Between 1848 and 1865 the men in blue fought nearly all of the western tribes. Robert Utley describes many of these skirmishes in consummate detail, including descriptions of garrison life that was sometimes agonizingly isolated, sometimes caught in the lightning moments of desperate battle. 'Along with his analysis of the general situation, Utley writes an excellent description of the frontier soldier and the army...His style is unobtrusive, entertaining, and objective to an extent rarely encountered today. It is refreshing to find a history of the frontier, the army, and particularly the Indian without the present-day mawkish sentimentalism' - "Journal of American History". 'One of [the book's] several impressive features is the author's talent for drawing from the indispensable detail of campaigns those significant trends in frontier military policy.Certainly Utley has applied creative management to a great mass of military minutiae and given it a meaningful, readable format' - Arrell M. Gibson, "American Historical Review". Robert M. Utley is recognized as one of the leading historians of the American West. He is the author of the much-acclaimed "Billy the Kid: A Short and Violent Life", published by the University of Nebraska Press in 1989, and of the award-winning books "Cavalier in Buckskin: George Armstrong Custer and the Western Military Frontier" (1988) and "High Noon in Lincoln: Violence on the Western Frontier" (1987), as well as the authoritative "Frontier Regulars: The United States Army and the Indian, 1866-1891" (also a Bison Book).

Between 9th and 12th June 1939, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth were the guests of Roosevelt at his country estate in Hyde Park, New York State, during what was the first ever visit by a reigning British monarch to the United States. Coming at a time when Britain desperately needed American help in the conflict that now seemed inevitable, the meeting was front page news on both sides of the Atlantic and imbued with huge political significance. In his new book Peter Conradi - who has already introduced us to the gentle, shy figure of George VI in his number-one bestseller The King's Speech - recreates the backdrop to the royal visit, analysing the political background and the media's reaction, and telling the back stories both of the King and of Roosevelt, whose colourful personal life became entwined with the visit.

American Geography is the visual record of Magnum photographer Matt Black's five-year, 100,000-mile road trip across 46 states of the United States, plus Puerto Rico. It examines the conditions of powerlessness, prejudice and pragmatism among America's poor. The project originated in Matt Black's exploration of his own home town in California's rural Central Valley - a place that has been called 'the other California' - where one third of the population lives in poverty.Travelling out from that location in 2015, he went on to visit designated 'poverty areas' - places with poverty rates of above 20% as defined by the US census. He found that, rather than being anomalies, 'poverty areas' are never more than two-hour's drive apart. They are woven throughout the fabric of the country, yet are cut off from the 'land of opportunity'.Matt Black's compelling black and white photographs, from which one can trace a line back to the FSA Photographers of the 1930s and 1940s such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, are accompanied by his own travelogue - an eclectic combination of observations, overheard conversations in cafes and city buses, diner menus, bus timetables, historical facts and echoes from daily news reports - which enrich the vivid portrait of these 'states of un-America.'With 100 illustrations in colour

Quotable Jefferson Davis - 2867118669

Quotable Jefferson Davis Sea Raven Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Who was America's most important Civil War president? For those of us who live in the South it wasn't Abraham Lincoln, it was Jefferson Davis. If you're not as familiar with Davis as you are with Lincoln, it's not surprising: when the Northern victors rewrote the history of the Civil War, they glorified liberal Lincoln while all but ignoring conservative Davis - a biased trend that continues to this day. In this one-of-a-kind Civil War Sesquicentennial Edition, "The Quotable Jefferson Davis," award-winning author, Southern historian, and Davis family relation, Lochlainn Seabrook, brings the Rebel leader's forgotten words and ideas back to life; traditional American beliefs that were once ardently embraced by over half of the United States. Included here, in some 300 footnoted entries, are examples of Davis' core views on government, the Constitution, the Union, states' rights, slavery, secession, his presidency, the War, the Confederacy, the Southern people, Lincoln, Yankees, Reconstruction, and more. Though brief, this is a significant work that should be required reading in every American home and school. For with the original intention of the Founding Fathers quickly disappearing (that, in Davis' words, "sovereignty is inherent in the people"), and with the central government continuing to enlarge on a daily basis, this book's powerful message and revolutionary contents are now more topical than at any time since President Davis took office in 1861. An attractive, unique, affordable, and popular tourist-friendly work that will appeal to both casual Civil War buffs and hardcore academicians alike, "The Quotable Jefferson Davis" is the perfect addition to any retail outlet, including Civil War sites, historic houses, museum gift stores, antique shops, and gun stores. Civil War scholar Lochlainn Seabrook, a descendant of the families of Alexander H. Stephens and John S. Mosby, is the most prolific and popular pro-South writer in the world today. A recipient of the prestigious Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medal, he is known as the "new Shelby Foote" and is the author of over 45 books. A seventh-generation Kentuckian of Appalachian heritage, Mr. Seabrook has a forty-year background in American and Southern history, and is the author of the runaway bestseller "Everything You Were Taught About the Civil War is Wrong, Ask a Southerner!" His other popular books include: "Everything You Were Taught About American Slavery is Wrong, Ask a Southerner!"; "The Great Yankee Coverup: What the North Doesn't Want You to Know About Lincoln's War!"; "Confederate Flag Facts: What Every American Should Know About Dixie's Southern Cross"; "Confederacy 101: Amazing Facts You Never Knew About America's Oldest Political Tradition"; "Give This Book to a Yankee! A Southern Guide to the Civil War For Northerners"; and "Honest Jeff and Dishonest Abe: A Southern Children's Guide to the Civil War."

When Glenn Kurtz stumbles upon an old family film in his parents' closet in Florida, he has no inkling of its historical significance or of the impact it will have on his life. The film, shot long ago by his grandfather on a sightseeing trip to Europe, includes shaky footage of Paris and the Swiss Alps, with someone inevitably waving at the camera. Astonishingly, David Kurtz also captured on color 16mm film the only known moving images of the thriving, predominantly Jewish town of Nasielsk, Poland, shortly before the community's destruction. "Blissfully unaware of the catastrophe that lay just ahead," he just happened to visit his birthplace in 1938, a year before the Nazi occupation. Of the town's three thousand Jewish inhabitants, fewer than one hundred would survive. Glenn Kurtz quickly recognizes the brief footage as a crucial link in a lost history. "The longer I spent with my grandfather's film," he writes, "the richer and more fragmentary its images became." Every image, every face, was a mystery that might be solved. Soon he is swept up in a remarkable journey to learn everything he can about these people. After restoring the film, which had shrunk and propelled across the United States; to Canada, England, Poland, and Israel; and into archives, basements, cemeteries, and even an irrigation ditch at an abandoned Luftwaffe airfield as he looks for shards of Nasielsk's Jewish history. One day, Kurtz hears from a young woman who had watched the video on the Holocaust Museum's website. As the camera panned across the faces of children, she recognized her grandfather as a thirteen-year-old boy. Moszek Tuchendler of Nasielsk was now eighty-six-year-old Maurice Chandler of Florida, and when Kurtz meets him, the lost history of Nasielsk comes into view. Chandler's laser-sharp recollections create a bridge between two worlds, and he helps Kurtz eventually locate six more survivors, including a ninety-six-year-old woman who also appears in the film, standing next to the man she would later marry. Painstakingly assembled from interviews, photographs, documents, and artifacts, "Three Minutes in Poland" tells the rich, harrowing, and surprisingly intertwined stories of these seven survivors and their Polish hometown. "I began to catch fleeting glimpses of the living town," Kurtz writes, "a cruelly narrow sample of its relationships, contradictions, scandals." Originally a travel souvenir, David Kurtz's home movie became the most important record of a vibrant town on the brink of extinction. From this brief film, Glenn Kurtz creates a poignant yet unsentimental exploration of memory, loss, and improbable survival--a monument to a lost world.

A humorous and rousing set of literal and figurative sojourns as well as a mission statement about comprehending, protecting, and truly experiencing the outdoors, fueled by three journeys undertaken by actor, humorist, and New York Times bestselling author Nick Offerman Nick Offerman has always felt a particular affection for the Land of the Free not just for the people and their purported ideals but to the actual land itself: the bedrock, the topsoil, and everything in between that generates the health of your local watershed. In his new book, Nick takes a humorous, inspiring, and elucidating trip to America's trails, farms, and frontier to examine the people who inhabit the land, what that has meant to them and us, and to the land itself, both historically and currently.   In 2018, Wendell Berry posed a question to Nick, a query that planted the seed of this book, sending Nick on two memorable journeys with pals a hiking trip to Glacier National Park with his friends Jeff Tweedy and George Saunders, as well as an extended visit to his friend James Rebanks, the author of The Shepherd's Life and English Pastoral. He followed that up with an excursion that could only have come about in 2020 Nick and his wife, Megan Mullally, bought an Airstream trailer to drive across (several of) the United States. These three quests inspired some  deep-ish" thinking from Nick, about the history and philosophy of our relationship with nature in our national parks, in our farming, and in our backyards; what we mean when we talk about conservation; and the importance of outdoor recreation, all subjects very close to Nick's heart.  With witty, heartwarming stories and a keen insight into the human problems we all confront, this is both a ramble through and celebration of the land we all love.

Sayyid Qutb is considered by many to be the founder of radical Islamism - the "Philospher of Islamic Terror," in the words of Paul Berman. Many draw a direct line from Qutb through Ayman al-Zawahiri to Osama bin Laden. Qutb first gained notice as a novelist, literary critic, and poet but then began writing religious and political criticism aimed at the Egyptian government and Muslims he deemed insufficiently pious. Under pressure from the authorities, Qutb left Egypt in 1948 for a two-year visit to the United States, during which he grew even more radical. He returned to Egypt and joined the Muslim Brotherhood, eventually taking charge of its propaganda operation. After members of the Brotherhood attempted to assassinate Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, the group was outlawed and Qutb was thrown in jail. He was executed in 1966 - becoming, in effect, the first martyr to the Islamist cause. In this book, James Toth traces the life and thought of Qutb, giving attention not only to his well-known Signposts on the Road, but also to his less-studied works like Social Justice in Islam and his 30-volume Quranic commentary.By returning to these sources, Toth draws a complex portrait of Qutb: one that moves beyond the cartoonish depictions of him as the evil genius lurking behind today's terrorists.
