The book Politics of Erasure. From ?Damnatio Memoriae? to Alluring Void on the one hand deals with the strategies of widely understood erasure in visual arts (i.e. exclusion, annulment and depreciation) in terms of particular works of art, museum narrations or urban spaces; on the other hand, it attempts to look at the ways of writing history because here the required and necessary virtue of synthesis sometimes transforms into an injurious scheme. Thus, oscillation between the general consciousness of the method and its precise use within case studies becomes not only a presentation of significant works of the Polish art of the 20th century showed in the general European context, but also a reflection on the craft of the historian, its limitations and possibilities. The ?politics of erasure? in the title does not link only with the ruthless power struggle hostile to any signs of resistance, it can also be a strategy aiming at widening our perception or negotiating what is visible and real. In this last case it does not reconcile itself to the terror of the visible and becomes a persevering attempt to expand the range of imagination and activate memory and intuition.

What Do Pictures Want? - 2877368904

What Do Pictures Want? University of Chicago Press

Why do we have such extraordinarily powerful responses toward the images and pictures we see in everyday life? Why do we behave as if pictures were alive, possessing the power to influence us, to demand things from us, to persuade us, seduce us, or even lead us astray? According to W. J. T. Mitchell, we need to reckon with images not just as inert objects that convey meaning but as animated beings with desires, needs, appetites, demands, and drives of their own. "What Do Pictures Want?" explores this idea and highlights Mitchell's innovative and profoundly influential thinking on picture theory and the lives and loves of images. Ranging across the visual arts, literature, and mass media, Mitchell applies characteristically brilliant and wry analyses to Byzantine icons and cyberpunk films, racial stereotypes and public monuments, ancient idols and modern clones, offensive images and found objects, American photography and aboriginal painting. Opening new vistas in iconology and the emergent field of visual culture, he also considers the importance of Dolly the Sheep--who, as a clone, fulfills the ancient dream of creating a living image--and the destruction of the World Trade Center on 9/11, which, among other things, signifies a new and virulent form of iconoclasm. "What Do Pictures Want?" offers an immensely rich and suggestive account of the interplay between the visible and the readable. A work by one of our leading theorists of visual representation, it will be a touchstone for art historians, literary critics, anthropologists, and philosophers alike. "A treasury of episodes--generally overlooked by art history and visual studies--that turn on images that 'walk by themselves' and exert their own power over the living."--Norman Bryson, "Artforum "

William of Malmesbury's Chronicle of the Kings of England Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from William of Malmesbury's Chronicle of the Kings of England: From the Earliest Period to the Reign of King Stephen "William of Malmesburt," according to archbishop Usher, "is the chief of our historians;" Leland records him "as an elegant, learned, and faithful historian;" and Sir Henry Saville is of opinion, that he is the only man of his time who has discharged his trust as an historian. His History of the Kings of England was translated into English by the Rev. John Sharpe, and published in quarto, in 1815. Though the language of Mr. Sharpe's work is by no means so smooth as the dialect of the present day would require, yet the care with which he examined MSS., and endeavoured to give the exact sense of his author, seemed so important a recommendation, that the editor of the present volume has gladly availed himself of it as a ground-work for his own labours. The result of this plan is, that the public are enabled to purchase without delay and at an insignificant expense, the valuable contemporary historian, who has hitherto been like a sealed book to the public, or only accessible through a bulky volume, the scarcity of which served to exclude it from all but public libraries or the studies of the wealthy. But the translation of Mr. Sharpe has by no means been reprinted verbatim. Within the last ten years a valuable edition of the original text, with copious collations of MSS., has been published by the English Historical Society. This edition has been compared with the translation, and numerous passages retouched and improved. Some charters, also, have been added, and a large number of additional notes appended at the foot of the pages, together with a few other improvements and additions calculated to render this interesting history more acceptable to the reading public. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 12: July and October, M. DCCC. XXXIII The lives which have been devoted most assiduously and successfully to the intellectual pursuits of science, are seldom those which are most fertile in incident, or which afford the best subject-matter for the biographer. Were it otherwise, that of Newton, whose high destiny it was to unravel the mechanism of the universe, and who contributed so largely to the advancement of natural knowledge, would be one of the most interesting and instructive that ever was written. Yet the biography of Newton is little else than a general history of the progress of the mathematical and physical sciences during the age in which he lived. Exclusive of his scientific discoveries, his life presents very few incidents of peculiar interest, or from which we may derive any lessons of practical wisdom. Thirty years of it, after the age of boyhood, he passed in the retirement of a college, closely engaged in profound studies, and having very little commerce with the world. For a short time he occupied a seat in Parliament, where he made no conspicuous figure; and though he afterwards held the office of Master of the Mint, yet he neither took an active part in public affairs, nor connected himself in any way with the political history of his country. The latter part of it - and it was prolonged to the full term of human existence - differed in no respect from that of thousands of ordinary men, in affluent circumstances, of a literary turn, and quietly going through a specified routine of official duty. Accordingly, it is not from anecdotes relating to his domestic life, but in the study of those immortal works which he has left behind him, that we can discover his superiority over other men, or learn the vast extent of the obligation which the world owes to his genius. Kindergarten Journal, 1910 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Kindergarten Journal, 1910 One of the interesting and absorbing subjects of discussion for scholars of modern times has been, and still is, the place which the primitive savage occupies in the history of mankind. This science which studies the human family from its infancy, thousands of years ago, to the present time, in its progress of culture, contributed to by myth, legend, language and custom, is called the science of Folk-Lore. The savage in his very lowest state was occupied with nothing more than supplying his physical needs, but as he very slowly and gradually ascended in the scale of humanity he began to do some thinking, and to deserve the name of "man," which means "to think." He began to perceive the world which surrounded him with its great mountain heights and valleys; its lakes and rivers; its birds and animals; trees and plants. His ear began to be trained to the various sounds of nature; the rumble of thunder; the roar of the sea; the rustle of the leaves on the trees; and the trickling of the tiny rivulet down the hillside. He began to wonder about it and then to ask himself the cause. Then came the attempt to explain it. What was more natural than to endow all external forces with life? He saw likenesses between himself and this phenomena of nature. His great imagination supplied qualities and faculties like his own, such as feeling, willing, hearing and speaking. It was life answering to life without the power to explain; consequently all things were personified. I think we will all agree that the childhood of humanity presents us with a magnified picture of the small boy and girl of today. The little girl bestows fond mother love on a piece of muslin roiled up to look like a doll; while the boy rides a piece of a broomstick and imagines he is making a journey into an unknown world on a fine black charger. This same imagination permitted the savage to interpret all things around him thru analogy. He lived, surrounded by great jungles inhabited by huge, fierce beasts, and water in which lived other wild animals. They seemed to possess powers far beyond those of himself. They could run and fly and swim with incredible swiftness. They were wonderful in their strength. No wonder then that man considered them his superiors and regarded them with awe and fear. He was often inadequately armed and unable to cope with them in battle, consequently he was a slave to these beliefs in nature's powers. One author tells us that "In a cave in France supposed by geologists to be 100,000 years old may be seen the oldest extant picture of man. It represents a very small man, naked and defenseless, fleeing in terror from an enormous serpent. It is the true image of primitive man in his relationship to Nature, and touches the heart with its vivid expression of feebleness and fear." These outside natural objects were very powerful forces in developing early history. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Memory and Commemoration in Medieval Culture ASHGATE PUBLISHING

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In medieval society and culture, memory occupied a unique position. It was central to intellectual life and the medieval understanding of the human mind. Commemoration of the dead was also a fundamental Christian activity. Above all, the past - and the memory of it - occupied a central position in medieval thinking, from ideas concerning the family unit to those shaping political institutions. Focusing on France but incorporating studies from further afield, this collection of essays marks an important new contribution to the study of medieval memory and commemoration. Arranged thematically, each part highlights how memory cannot be studied in isolation, but instead intersects with many other areas of medieval scholarship, including art history, historiography, intellectual history, and the study of religious culture. Key themes in the study of memory are explored, such as collective memory, the links between memory and identity, the fallibility of memory, and the linking of memory to the future, as an anticipation of what is to come.

2016 Reprint of 1947 Second Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. Klopsteg is assured a place in the history of archery through his scientific investigations of the bow and the revolution in archery technology that he launched. His introduction to archery came in the summer of 1929 when he bought a primitive archery set for the amusement of his three daughters. With his own training in physics and research experience in projectile flight, Klopsteg found himself fascinated by the ancient art of shooting arrows with the bow and quickly adopted the sport as his own hobby. Klopsteg, with the trained eye of the scientist, questioned whether the traditional English longbow which had remained essentially unchanged for centuries, expressed the bow's most efficient form. This scientific investigation of the physics of archery launched a revolution in bow design. Soon other archers were successfully experimenting with manmade materials for both bows and arrows, and the technology of archery is today very different from the sport as Klopsteg first found it. In addition to his research into the efficient design of the bow, Klopsteg pursued an academic investigation into the history and technology of Turkish archery. The result of his studies was the publication of "Turkish Archery and the Composite Bow." The publication of this book contributed to the adoption of the composite bows of reflexed shape in the late 1930s.

The Anglo-Saxon period, stretching from the fifth to the late eleventh century, begins with the Roman retreat from the Western world and ends with the Norman takeover of England. Between these epochal events, many of the contours and patterns of English life that would endure for the next millennium were shaped. In this authoritative work, N. J. Higham and M. J. Ryan reexamine Anglo-Saxon England in the light of new research in disciplines as wide ranging as historical genetics, paleobotany, archaeology, literary studies, art history, and numismatics. The result is the definitive introduction to the Anglo-Saxon world, enhanced with a rich array of photographs, maps, genealogies, and other illustrations. The Anglo-Saxon period witnessed the birth of the English people, the establishment of Christianity, and the development of the English language. With an extraordinary cast of characters (Alfred the Great, the Venerable Bede, King Cnut), a long list of artistic and cultural achievements (Beowulf, the Sutton Hoo ship-burial finds, the Bayeux Tapestry), and multiple dramatic events (the Viking invasions, the Battle of Hastings), the Anglo-Saxon era lays legitimate claim to having been one of the most important in Western history.

Reconsidering the American Way of War - 2869617278

Reconsidering the American Way of War Georgetown University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Challenging several longstanding notions about the American way of war, this book examines US strategic and operational practice from 1775 to 2014. It surveys all major US wars from the War of Independence to the campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as most smaller US conflicts to determine what patterns, if any, existed in American uses of force. Contrary to many popular sentiments, Echevarria finds that the American way of war is not astrategic, apolitical, or defined by the use of overwhelming force. Instead, the American way of war was driven more by political considerations than military ones, and the amount of force employed was rarely overwhelming or decisive. As a scholar of Clausewitz, Echevarria borrows explicitly from the Prussian to describe the American way of war not only as an extension of US policy by other means, but also the continuation of US politics by those means. The book's focus on strategic and operational practice closes the gap between critiques of American strategic thinking and analyses of US campaigns. Echevarria discovers that most conceptions of American strategic culture fail to hold up to scrutiny, and that US operational practice has been closer to military science than to military art. Providing a fresh look at how America's leaders have used military force historically and what that may mean for the future, this book should be of interest to military practitioners and policymakers, students and scholars of military history and security studies, and general readers interested in military history and the future of military power.

Armenian Legends and Festivals (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Armenian Legends and Festivals The author of the study which follows responded to the lure of his task for both theoretical and practical reasons. He seemed, because of his intimate personal relationship to Armenian life, to be peculiarly qualified to study and interpret a cross-section of that country's life. It is particularly urgent that we as Americans have authentic studies of Armenia and Armenian social life. Heretofore there has been a striking lack of such materials readily accessible in English. Because of the not inconsiderable immigration which reaches us from Armenia, and because also there has been a call for the United States to act as mandatory for this country under the peace treaty, we should penetrate more deeply into the Armenian heart than we have been able to do so far, if we are to carry through successfully our job either as assimilator or as friendly guardian. Moreover there is incumbent upon the United States in particular the duty of understanding a country like Armenia, since we have been foremost in proclaiming the doctrine of the rights of small nationalities. Those are the practical purposes from the standpoint of social politics which have given rise to and confer full warrant upon this study. Of no less importance, however, is the contribution which Mr. Boettiger's study makes to theoretical sociology. He has sketched out for us the picture of a refractory culture which refuses to amalgamate with or yield to or be permeated by rival cultures. The social history of this sturdy people offers us a very clear-cut example of what really makes a society or a nation. Not mountains, not dynasties, not blood, but common interests, common traditions, common beliefs; in short, mental community. The theoretical joins with the practical service of this study if it can strengthen our understanding that only as our own blood and that of our Armenian friends reach the place where they boil at the same temperature, or are cooled by the same application of reason, can we minister to each other or carry out the new partnership which may lie immediately ahead of us in the reestablishment of peace and reorganization of world comity. Excerpt from A Memoir, Explanatory of the Chart and Survey of the County of London-Derry, Ireland When Ireland seemed devoted to political parties, withheld neither by true wisdom nor by kind feelings; when all interference seemed full of danger and void of hope; the author formed the design of abstracting his thoughts from public transactions, and of bending them on the studies of inanimate nature. In this pursuit, materials were collected for the natural history of his native county; a part of this collection was placed in the hands of a respected member of the Dublin Society; and this, with other accompanying remarks, too hastily thrown together, was published, in 1808, under the title of a "Statistical Survey of the County of London-Derry." The imperfections of this work did not escape the author; and, in consequence, a design was formed that, on some future occasion, if possible, these defects should be redeemed. In 1809 the worshipful Company of Fishmongers sent over, to visit their estate in the county of London-Derry, three gentlemen of excellent judgment and patriotic views: They were pleased to honour the author with a visit, and to favour him with their confidence. In various conversations, it was suggested that if a Chart of Territory could be combined with a Topographical Map, on an extended scale, it would be a most useful acquisition for the proprietors of the county. Excerpt from Roman Mosaics: Or Studies in Rome and Its Neighbourhood So many thousands of volumes have been written about Rome that it is impossible to say anything new regarding it. Every feature of its topography and every incident of its history have been described. Every sentiment appropriate to the subject has been expressed. But Rome can be regarded from countless points of view, and studied for endless objects. Each visitor's mind is a different prism with angles of thought that break up the subject into its own colours. And as is the case in a mosaic, old materials can be brought into new combinations, and a new picture constructed out of them. It is on this ground that I venture to add another book to the bewildering, pile of literature on Rome. But I have another reason to offer. While the great mass of the materials of the book is old and familiar, not a few things are introduced that are comparatively novel. The late Dean Alford made the remark how difficult it is to obtain in Rome those details of interest which can be so easily got in other cities. Guide-books contain a vast amount of information, but there are many points interesting to the antiquarian and the historian which they overlook altogether. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Heart of the Railroad Problem: The History of Railway Discrimination in the United States, the Chief Efforts at Control, and the Remedies Proposed, With Hints From Other Countries This work is one of the consequences of a conversation years ago with Dr. C. F. Taylor, of Philadelphia, editor and publisher of The Medical World and of Equity Series. The doctor said that Equity Series should have a book on the railroad question. The writer replied that there was room for a book dealing with the political, industrial, and social effects of different systems of railway ownership and control. A plan was adopted for a book, to be called "The Railways, the Trusts, and the People," which is now on the press of Equity Series. For the preparation of this work the writer travelled through nine countries of Europe and over three-fourths of the United States, studying railways, meeting railroad presidents and managers, ministers of railways, members of railway commissions, governors, senators, and leading men of every class, in the effort to get a thorough understanding of the railway situation. He also made an extensive study of the railroad literature of leading countries, and examined thoroughly the reports and decisions of commissions and courts in railroad cases in the United States. As these studies progressed, the writer became more and more convinced that the heart of the railroad problem lie s in the question of impartial treatment of shippers. The chief complaint against our railroads is not that the rates as a whole are unreasonable, but that favoritism is shown for large shippers or special interests having control of railways or a special pull with the management. Are there angels within spitting distance of men? What did Pope Gregory the Great think of pagans? Were the monks of Battle compulsive forgers? Is temptation always a bad thing? These and many other fascinating questions are explored in this book. Commisssioned in honour of the distinguished medieval historian, Henry Mayr-Harting and reflecting the range and focus of its honorand's interests, the twenty-five essays provide a panoramic and stimulating exploration of the interrelated fields of belief and culture in the middle ages. Sanctity and sacred biography, seduction and temptation, forgery and litigation, patronage and art production, conversion and oppression were all part of the rich fabric of medieval Christian culture that is scrutinized here. Individually the studies shed new light on a series of key issues and questions relating to the cultural, religious, and political history of the sixth-century church, of Anglo-Saxon and Norman England, and of Carolingian, Ottonian, and Investiture Contest Europe; while collectively they illuminate the interaction of Christianity and politics, of secular and sacred, and of belief and culture from late antiquity to the thirteenth century.

Marion Expedition to Davis Strait and Baffin Bay, Vol. 1 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The "Marion" Expedition to Davis Strait and Baffin Bay, Vol. 1: Under Direction of the United States Coast Guard, 1928 Prior to the loss of the Titanic, on April 14, 1912, as the result of a collision with an iceberg in the North Atlantic, no patrol was maintained in the region of the Grand Banks for the purpose of safeguarding lives and property against the.iceberg peril, and no systematic study had been made of physical and oceanographic conditions pertaining to icebergs and their drift in the North Atlantic. While a patrol of the ice zone was maintained during the seasons of 1912 and 1913 to meet an almost universal demand, arising from the Titanic catastrophe, for protection against the iceberg menace, it was not until the season of 1914 that the United States Government undertook the management of the international service of study and observation of ice conditions and of ice patrol, pursuant to the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea signed on January 20, 1914.This was a new and important duty, inaugurating the entry of the United States Coast Guard into an international service of iceberg scouting and patrol, and into a field of scientific study and research not previously developed nor sufficiently known. The early history of the International Service of Ice Observation and Ice Patrol represented a pioneering service and purpose not only to maintain an efficient patrol worthy of the high standards and traditions of the United States Coast Guard, but also to accumulate scientific data to afford an intelligent understanding of the forces of nature having an effect on or a relationship to the iceberg menace. With the growing importance of a knowledge of ocean currents, and of the source, characteristics, and drifts of icebergs in the conduct of this international service, ever opportunity was availed of and every effort directed, each ice season, toward assembling data and making studies of oceanographic conditions in the Grand Banks region. The data gathered during the ice seasons were supplemented by observations made during special cruises at other periods of the year in order to study seasonal changes in ocean currents and water temperatures. Each succeeding season brought to light extensive and important data in furtherance of our knowledge of the elements entering into the study of ice conditions, and strengthening and corroborating opinions held as a result of prior scientific investigations. Reports of these observations were published in the annual bulletins of the International Service of Ice Observation and Ice Patrol.
