Oriental Studies and Arts Dialog

Kultura i sztuka

This volume is respectfully dedicated to Professor Tadeusz Majda, a renowned scholar in the fields of Oriental Studies and Art History. His numerous publications attest to his preeminent scholarly standing. But it is not the high number of his books and articles that alone mark him as a true teacher and a man of knowledge. It is the position he holds among his learned colleagues; the intense interest in his works shown by his disciples and students; the respect that he has earned among the public; and his values, wisdom, and gentle sense of humour that have all made him a true scholar, one to be followed. And of course there is his admirable elegance and charm. The scholarly fields represented by Professor Majda, Oriental Studies with a special focus on Turkology and the history of Oriental Art

Cracow Indological Studies XVI. Tantric Traditions in Theory and Practice Księgarnia Akademicka Sp. z o.o.

Książki ogólne / naukowe

PrefaceThe 16th volume of Cracow Indological Studies, which we would like to dedicate to the memory of Mr. Jozef Lqczak, concentrates on Tantric traditions of South Asia, just as the 8lh volume, published in 2006. The contributions to the present volume refer both to the topic of the theoretical side of these traditions and to practical issues; some of them pertain also to the mutual relations between theory and practice. The research on Tantric traditions of India, although based mostly on textual sources, deals also with the practical application of the textual prescripts into the daily practice of the followers and into the temple rituals. Therefore, besides inquiring into the theological and philosophical issues within the vast body of canonical scriptures and exegetical texts, scholars search for traces of actual practice. The mutual relation of the prescriptive or normative literature and the actual shape of the tradition is similarly interesting with regard to the past as well as to present-day India.Since our knowledge about the textual sources is growing, also due to several research projects dedicated to collecting new, hitherto unknown texts, scholars gain access to more source materials and are able to deepen or re-consider their views concerning the traditions under research. New data is provided by archaeology and history research; anthropological and ethnological inquiry into the stillliving traditions has also become one of the important components of Indological research. Thus better knowledge and understanding of Tantric traditions is made possible due to the involvement and cooperation of different disciplines: history of the region, ethnography, epigraphy, archeology, art history and obviously philology. The present 16th volume of Cracow Indological Studies is therefore meant for contributions concerning several issues connected with the new developments in the study on the textual sources as well as the more practical dimensions of Tantric traditions.Tantric traditions of South Asia created rich literature, an extensive part of which was viewed as canonical and revealed by the highest god himself, though collected and systematized by men. The theoretical needs imposed by the canonical scriptures, claiming also to belong to Brahmins (which very often was the case because it was mostly Brahmins who created them), were meeting the practical needs of the actual situation. Traditions, existing in the particular space and time, in their daily practice had to acknowledge and react to those needs. Some of these traditions were heterodox, unconventional and they openly presented their sometimes controversial views despite the critical opinions of the Brahma- nical and orthodox milieu. Other ones tried as much as possible to adapt their ideas to the mainstream of the surrounding traditions. Thus, being subject to internal and external influences, they included elements rooted in the orthodox cults, but also those coming from the local and heterodox cults; some of them contain also elements which transgress orthodox norms. The process of combining strands of different traditions can be observed for example in the South of India, where the Brahmanical culture was interacting with the local, social specificity and local religious traditions of Dravidian origin.Additionally, the theoretical canon has to interact with the ritualistic and technical needs of religious practice arising from the necessity of ensuring the proper place of worship, adequate representation of the god and efficient procedure of worshipping him.The relation of the theory and practice draws attention of several scholars, therefore the present volume inscribes also in these streams of Indological research.1 Axel Michaels, in his General Preface to the “Heidelberg Studies in South Asian Rituals”, points out that the study of rituals in South Asia for a long time existed in between philology and anthropology, but nowadays more often field-work and the study of texts are combined.2 It makes Indological research more interdisciplinary. Nevertheless, the research on textual sources still becomes indispensable to the acquisition of knowledge about theoretical doctrines as well as practical aspects of the traditions under research. However, not having enough sources about the history of reception of the theoretical texts (see for example Rastelli, in the present volume), we have to be cautious about referring scriptures to present-day ritualistic practice directly. The authors of the Words and Deeds volume even warn us about such danger.3 Similarly, some of the authors of the present volume draw our attention to the fact that the texts are usually normative and that it would be difficult to answer the question to what extent they were put into practice. Nevertheless, theoretical rules were probably quite often influenced by actual contemporary practice and also by contemporary context (...)

Fauvel Studies Clarendon Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The manuscript Paris, Bibliotheque Nationale, fonds francais 146 is an unparalleled witness to the politics, society, and culture of the French royal court in the early fourteenth century. It contains an interpolated version of the Roman de Fauvel, completed by Gerves du Bus in 1314, that uniquely combines the Old French text with music setting poetry in French and Latin, high-quality illuminations (including early depictions of the architecture of medieval Paris), and further literary elaborations and additions. The narrative finds a place within several literary traditions, serving as a satire on Enguerran de Marigny, a fallen minister of Philip IV (d. 1314), and also as admonition or advice for the new king Philip V (crowned 1317). Alongside the Roman de Fauvel, fr. 146 also includes French and Latin narrative dits (the latter edited here for the first time), the complete known works of Jehannot de Lescurel, and an important French verse chronicle. Fauvel's short refrains and chant pieces are also newly collected and catalogued. Leading medievalists and younger scholars from a wide range of fields have contributed to this exciting interdisciplinary venture. Their essays reveal the extraordinary range of material and contexts touched by Fauvel and its interpolations, adding to our understanding of political satire, of the processes of literary or musical composition, and of patronage in the medieval period, amongst numerous other topics, advancing knowledge and enriching contexts on many fronts. Generously illustrated, this volume includes essential new reference material for medievalists in political, social and urban history, art and architectural history, musicology, the history of the book and codicology, and medieval languages and literatures, principally Old French and Latin.

Studies in Ephemera Bucknell University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Studies in Ephemera: Text and Image in Eighteenth-Century Print brings together established and emerging scholars of early modern print culture to explore the dynamic relationships between words and illustrations in a wide variety of popular cheap print from the seventeenth to the early nineteenth century. While ephemera was ubiquitous in the period, it is scarcely visible to us now, because only a handful of the thousands of examples once in existence have been preserved. Nonetheless, single-sheet printed works, as well as pamphlets and chapbooks, constituted a central part of visual and literary culture, and were eagerly consumed by rich and poor alike in Great Britain, North America, and on the Continent. Displayed in homes, posted in taverns and other public spaces, or visible in shop windows on city streets, ephemeral works used sensational means to address themes of great topicality. The English broadside ballad, of central concern in this volume, grew out of oral culture; the genre addressed issues of nationality, history, gender and sexuality, economics, and more. Richly illustrated and well researched, Studies in Ephemera offers interdisciplinary perspectives into how ephemeral works reached their audiences through visual and textual means. It also includes essays that describe how collections of ephemera are categorized in digital and conventional archives, and how our understanding of these works is shaped by their organization into collections. This timely and fascinating book will appeal to archivists, and students and scholars in many fields, including art history, comparative literature, social and economic history, and English literature. Excerpt from More Nineteenth Century Studies: A Group of Honest Doubters Significance, than that of the divergent courses of the brothers Newman. It is as if two rivers, taking their rise in the same dividing range, should yet be deflected by some minute original irregularity of level, so that one pours its waters into the Mediterranean, the other into the German Ocean. The Morning Leader newspaper, shortly after the death of Francis called John 'a spiritual Tory' and Francis 'a Spiritual radical'. Long before this - even five years before his own conversion to Rome - John took his younger brother as an omen of the dangers of Protestantism 'whether or not Anglicanism leads to Rome,' he wrote to his sister Jemima, 'so far is clear as day, that Protestantism leads to infidelity.' The career of Francis, indeed, seemed to him the clearest and most painful illustration of one of his own deepest beliefs, that there is no logical standing-point between Romanism and Atheism. One of my main objects in what follows will be to suggest that this antithesis represents a dangerous half-truth. The foundations of nineteenth cen tury Protestantism were indeed insecure, and out of this insecurity there was bound to emerge, and did emerge, a drift on the one hand towards Rome and on the other to wards unbelief. The brothers John and Francis Newman had a great deal in common; far more than might at first sight be supposed. They had not only drunk the same milk of evangelical doctrine in their childhood, but they both had subtle and dissolvent intellects, and the instinctive scepticism which questions received assumptions. But see ticrsm, as history has repeatedly shown, may be the basis of orthodoxy as well as of heresy; according to the proportion it bears to. Constructive Bible Studies Forgotten Books

Excerpt from Constructive Bible Studies: The Priestly Element in the Old Testament This treatment of the Priestly Element in the Old Testament is intended to serve as a guide for students who wish to take up the questions relating to the subject from an historical point of view. The materials for a preliminary study of the various topics are gathered together, and arranged with suggestions as to order and method of procedure. It is thought that the work proposed is within the reach of the more mature pupils in the Sunday school, although the needs of college and theological students have been kept especially in mind. The general results of modern historical criticism have been taken as a basis for the work, since it is only from the point of view of history that these subjects may now be considered intelligently. Each special topic connected with the general subject of the Priestly Element furnishes a beautiful illustration of the growth and development of Israelitish and Jewish thought under the controlling influence of a conception of God which became more and more pure with the advancing centuries. Three methods of treatment have been employed, each being deemed best adapted to the case in hand, viz.: in Chapter I, a systematic statement of the scope of the Priestly Element; in Chapters II-IV, an historical statement covering in barest outline the story of the Priestly Element as a whole, in its progress and development; in Chapters V-XI, a classified and comparative examination (indicated by questions and suggestions based upon the material presented) of the more important special factors which, taken together, constitute the Priestly Element. Some effort has been made to indicate definitely and fully the more accessible literature on each topic. I wish to express my appreciation of the assistance rendered me by my colleague, Dr. John M. P. Smith, especially in the arrangement and verification of the scriptural references, and the references to the literature on the various topics. For obvious reasons the latter have been arranged chronologically, the literature in languages other than English being placed by itself. A second series of studies, designed to supplement and complete the present work, is in process of preparation. In these it is proposed to take up (1) the priestly literature of the Old Testament, viz., the priestly histories, the codes of legislation, the Psalms; (2) the priestly ideas as a whole; and (3) the relation of the Priestly Element to the work of Old Testament Prophecy and Wisdom. Studies in the Latin of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Studies in the Latin of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance It is an interesting as well as a significant fact that Latin, the language that has played the most important part of any perhaps in the history of the civilized world, has during almost its whole literary existence been the language of a class, holding itself aloof from the household tongue of the common people even when most intimately related to it. At the very time of its greatest degradation it was to a certain extent aristocratic in its character, its traditions, and its sympathies. This fact is significant; for upon it probably depended the very possibility of Latin's continuing a world language. No form of speech could long withstand the discrete, disintegrating tendencies of the commons, though it might continue to serve for a long period as the universal tongue of the narrower sympathied, but, from the point of view of nationality, more liberally educated classes. It is no ordinary phenomenon that this language, so foreign in its very essence to modern life, should still remain the touchstone of culture through all the enlightened world. If we can throw though it be but a partial and transient light upon some of the features of its genesis and history that help to explain this fact, the object of the present writer will have been attained. The literary language of Rome at the time of Cicero and Augustus was a cultivated variety of the Roman dialect of Latin. It represented the result of a process of differentiation that had been going on for over two centuries, separating the originally homogeneous speech into a cultivated and a vulgar dialect, a process that had been hastened and emphasized by the introduction of Greek culture at Rome, and by the political importance which the conquests of Rome's generals had given to her language in the legal and administrative world. As such, the literary idiom of Rome must be distinguished from the dialect of the Roman commons on the one hand, and from the rustic dialects - of the same Italic stock, but more remotely related to it - on the other. Książki & Multimedia > Książki

Opis - The book Art in Jewish society contains a wide spectrum of interpretations of Jewish art in the social and cultural context. The authors of these studies presented the profiles of artists and people of art as well as artistic trends against the social and cultural background prevalent in the Jewish communities of Central and Eastern Europe from the period of emancipation until the mid-twentieth century. These studies of diversified methods, methodologies and research perspectives included texts devoted to the relationships of the output of Jewish artists with Zionist ideology, Christian threads in Jewish art, the reactions of Jewish artists to political events, such as the pogroms, World War I, or the persecution they experienced after Hitler?s rise to power. The last part of the volume is devoted to Jewish museums and collections. The topics presented by the authors are extremely diverse yet at the same time complement each other to form a cohesive whole. The volume contains studies of various aspects of the work of individual artists (Yankiel Katz and his relationship with the art school in Kazan, Theresa Berenstein, Bruno Schulz and Samuel Hirszenberg, Marek Szwarc), as well as more comprehensive studies on Jewish architecture (the synagogue in Volhynia; the designs of Henryk Stifelman), photography (a comparative study of the works of Menachem Kipnis and Alter Kacyzne, as well as an article about the South African Litvak photographers) and film (the work of Maya Deren on a 1949 Jewish War Film in Moscow), as well as arts and crafts (Jewish papercuts) and monuments (Jewish monuments before 1939). Studies on art education are also included (Jewish students at the Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts). Three articles examine the topic of the relationship between Jewish artists and European avant-garde circles (David Bomberg, Marc Chagall, Ludwig Meidner). Compatible with the thematic framework designated by the editors of the volume, there are articles on Christian-Jewish relations (Pieta in Jewish art), or the involvement of Jewish artists in important historical events and politics (the presentation of pogroms in art; Jewish artists against the policies of National Socialism), including their involvement in Zionist ideology (Ephraim Moses Lilien, iconographic motifs in the interior of Eastern European synagogues). There are also some interesting articles discussing the activities of Jewish art critics and historians (Tea Arciszewska, Otto Schneider) and patrons (the Margolin family who supported the artist Israel Lejzerowicza), who played an important role as intermediaries between the artists and society. A similar social role in the promotion of culture was played by Jewish museums and private collections, directly represented in this volume by three articles (the Jewish Museum in Prešov, the history of art collections in the Jewish museum of Vilnius [Wilno, Vilna], the Judaica collections of the National Museum in Kraków).
