There is a striking similarity between Marian devotional songs and secular love songs of the Late Middle Ages and Renaissance. Two disparate genres--one sacred, the other secular; one Latin, the other vernacular--both praise an idealized, impossibly virtuous woman. Each does so through highly stylized derivations of traditional medieval song forms -- Marian prayer derived from earlier Gregorian chant, and love songs and lyrics from medieval courtly song. Yet despite their obvious similarities, the two musical and poetic traditions have rarely been studied together. Author David Rothenberg takes on this task with remarkable success, producing a useful and broad introduction to Marian music and liturgy, and then coupling that with an incisive comparative analysis of this devotional form with the words and music of secular love songs of the period. The Flower of Paradise examines the interplay of Marian devotional and secular poetics within polyphonic music from c. 1200 to c. 1500. Through case studies of works that demonstrate a specific symbolic resonance between Marian devotional and secular song, the book illustrates the distinctive ethos of this period in European culture. Rothenberg makes use of an impressive command of liturgical and religious studies, literature and poetry, and art history to craft a study with wide application across disciplinary boundaries. With its broad scope and unique, incisive analysis, this book is suited for scholars, students, and general readers alike. Undergraduate and graduate students of musicology, Medieval and Renaissance studies, comparative literature, art history, Western reglious history, and music history--especially that of the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and sacred music--will find this book a useful and informative resource on the period. The Flower of Paradise is also of interest to those with a particular dedication to any of its diverse subject areas. For individuals involved in religious organizations or those who frequent Medieval or Renaissance cultural sites and museums, this book will deepen their knowledge and open up new ways of thinking about the history and development of secular and sacred music and the Marian tradition.

Korea has an enduring history as a world-renowned centre of ceramic production. While the development of other Korean art forms--whether calligraphy, painting, architecture or sculpture--is strongly linked with that of neighboring China, Korean ceramics stand out as highly individual and largely independent of such cultural exchanges. Perhaps their most remarkable quality is an inherent spontaneity; they are often uneven in their shapes and playful in their designs. Imperfection--a characteristic that strongly distinguishes Korean ceramics from Chinese--is not only tolerated but accepted and respected as naturally given and as enhancing the beauty and individuality of a piece. The five celebrated ceramic artists whom noted art historian Burglind Jungmann has selected to form the focus of this study--Kim Yikyung, Yoon Kwang-cho, Lee Kang Hyo, Lee Young-Jae, and Lee In Chin--all have established and well-deserved reputations in Korea, and some of them have strong international ties as well. Kim Yikyung, for example, was educated at Alfred University in New York State; Lee Young-Jae pursued studies in Germany and has established her ceramic practice there; and Lee In Chin, although born in Seoul, was raised in California and attended college there before continuing his studies in Korea and Japan. These particular artists have been chosen in part because their works acknowledge and engage with Korean ceramic tradition while remaining innovative, contemporary pieces of art. They may be regarded as conducting simultaneous dialogues with the contemporary art scene and with ceramic practices of centuries long past--complex interchanges that differ fundamentally from each artist to the other.

Memory in Culture PALGRAVE MACMILLAN

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This is an introduction to one of the most exciting new interdisciplinary fields of research: cultural memory studies. Who was Maurice Halbwachs, and what are the 'social frameworks of memory'? What can Aby Warburg's work tell us about the 'memory of art'? How do Pierre Nora's lieux de memoire connect history and memory? Where does the ancient art of memory meet the neurosciences? How do media shape our most personal memories? And can remembrance become globalized? Memory in Culture addresses these and many other questions about the socio-cultural dimensions of remembering, offering a unique overview of the history and theory of memory studies. With the concise presentation of key concepts from history, sociology, political sciences, anthropology, psychology, literary, art and media studies, it documents current international and interdisciplinary memory research in an unprecedented way.

Opis - The book Politics of Erasure. From ?Damnatio Memoriae? to Alluring Void on the one hand deals with the strategies of widely understood erasure in visual arts (i.e. exclusion, annulment and depreciation) in terms of particular works of art, museum narrations or urban spaces; on the other hand, it attempts to look at the ways of writing history because here the required and necessary virtue of synthesis sometimes transforms into an injurious scheme. Thus, oscillation between the general consciousness of the method and its precise use within case studies becomes not only a presentation of significant works of the Polish art of the 20th century showed in the general European context, but also a reflection on the craft of the historian, its limitations and possibilities. The ?politics of erasure? in the title does not link only with the ruthless power struggle hostile to any signs of resistance, it can also be a strategy aiming at widening our perception or negotiating what is visible and real. In this last case it does not reconcile itself to the terror of the visible and becomes a persevering attempt to expand the range of imagination and activate memory and intuition. Deborah Parkin - 2874289015

Deborah Parkin Galerie Vevais

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

My work is ultimately about emotion. It is about capturing a moment or a memory. I have always been interested in the idea of 'memory' - I think this came through my studies, my reading of so many diaries and journals for my MA in Holocaust Studies. Although my work is very personal, the intention is that it is open enough for others to bring their own stories to it. My passion for photography started in earnest with the birth of my son. I had always enjoyed the photograph as an object but with his arrival came the need to record our lives. After the birth of my daughter I found that I was photographing as a way of exploring my own childhood memories as well as using it to document our lives. Photography was now becoming a means of expressing myself artistically. In my photography I have always been drawn to the theme of childhood, whether it has been recreating my own personal memories, making images of my children and recording their childhood or working with children using ancient photographic processes. I work with a variety of photographic mediums, from medium and large format cameras using film, to working with the Victorian Wet Plate Collodion Process. I love to work in a slow and considered way and one in which I collaborate with each child that sits before me. Deborah Parkin "The keys to understanding and appreciating the art of Deborah Parkin are beauty and strange-making, that Russian artistic concept called ostranenie (żżżżżżżżżż), a way of making perfectly ordinary things, a portrait of a child, for instance, seem quite strange and extraordinary. Of course, her art is about children and particularly her own children, about preserving the past for the future, and about working in a slow and luminous process. But what rises above all these descriptive aspects of it, what we finally are most struck by and respond to, are its beauty and ostranenie. Look, for example, at "Fern" or "The Unseen Eye" or this astounding image "Fleur and the Flower Crown". As a photographic historian and critic, I have looked at a great many photographs in my career, but these, like many others of hers, came with a shock, a jolt to the heart. These are deeply and movingly beautiful images, even though she has many others more "classically" beautiful, more Cameronesque, one could say: "Anti-climax", "Portrait of a Boy", "Growing Pains", and "I Dream", for example. But the quality that is so striking about those first three I mentioned is that their beauty is entwined with strange-making. They are timeless, as real art always is, but they are so clearly not of our time and our place that when I first saw them, I knew them from history. They seemed very much a part of the 19th century but not of the privileged world of Julia Margaret Cameron. These are the children whose faces one sees in Thomas Annan's Old Closes and Streets of Glasgow, in John Thomson's Street Life in London, and similar work from the 19th century. I am not suggesting that Parkin was attempting to evoke a darker past or pull at our heart-strings in these photographs. I am only pointing out that her strange-making art has the power to evoke history in its ability to suggest a truthful and honest portrait of the child, that her art can with the greatest subtlety suggest the child as the child actually was for most of the history of the world-and, sadly, as the child still is in most of the world. And this is something that I have never seen in the work of any other photographer. The world of children in those three portraits is not the sweet, impossible, and perfect idyll that Heinrich Kühn always photographed his children basking in nor is it that tragic world of the children Dr. Bernardo commissioned to be photographed in order to shock the Victorian consciousness into compassion, just as his contemporary humanitarians Charles Dickens, Frederick Engels, and the 7th Earl of Shaftesbury did in their work. Parkin has written that, though not challenging the actual "innocence" of children, she "is challenging the notion of childhood being innocent. We shouldn't sentimentalize childhood, to do this would be a grave disservice to our children. It would be a lie. It would suggest that a child lives in a blissful bubble and doesn't feel things that we do as adults. Children are acutely aware of what is going on around them. Children feel as vulnerable, if not more vulnerable than adults. [C]hildhood is what shapes us into the adults we become." And, as we all know, it can shape us for good or ill. Deborah Parkin's use of strange-making is not limited to the three photographs I mentioned. There is obvious strange-making in her transformations of children into angels, rabbits, and cats. But that is only strange-making to the eye of an adult, which most of her viewers will be, but not at all to the eye of a child. In his poem "anyone lived in a pretty how town" E. E. Cummings chronicled the loss of that innocent eye: "down they forgot as up they grew." In addition to noticing the beauty and strange-making in Deborah Parkin's work, it also helps to see her work as a child would-if we have not forgotten, if we can remember what we grew up and away from. Seen through our youthful eyes, the world of Deborah Parkin's art can be read as an adventure-a serious, lyrical, truthful, and deeply joyful one." Prof. John Wood

Painting Culture Duke University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Painting Culture tells the complex story of how, over the past three decades, the acrylic "dot" paintings of central Australia were transformed into objects of international high art, eagerly sought by upscale galleries and collectors. Since the early 1970s, Fred R. Myers has studied - often as a participant-observer - the Pintupi, one of several Aboriginal groups who paint the famous acrylic works. Describing their paintings and the complicated cultural issues they raise, Myers looks at the ways the paintings represent Aboriginal people and their culture, and how their heritage is translated into exchangeable values. He tracks the way these paintings become high art as they move outward from indigenous communities through and among other social institutions - the world of dealers, museums, critics. At the same time, he shows how this change in the status of the acrylic paintings is directly related to the initiative of the painters themselves, representing their hopes for new levels of recognition. Painting Culture describes in detail the actual practice of painting, insisting that such a focus is necessary to engage directly with the role of the art in the lives of contemporary Aboriginals. The book includes a unique "local art history, " a study of the complete corpus of two painters over a two-year period. It also explores the awkward local issues around the valuation and sale of the acrylic paintings, traces the shifting approaches of the Australian government and key organizations such as the Aboriginal Arts Board to the promotion of the work, and describes the early and subsequent phases of the works' inclusion in major Australian and international exhibitions. Myers provides an account of some of the events related to these exhibits, most notably the Asia Society's 1988 "Dreamings" show in New York, which was so pivotal in bringing the work to North American notice. He also traces the approaches and concerns of dealers, ranging from semi-tourist outlets in Alice Springs to more prestigious venues in Sydney and Melbourne. With its innovative approach to the transnational circulation of culture, this book will appeal to art historians, as well as those in cultural anthropology, cultural studies, museum studies, and performance studies.

Discourse linguistics and beyond Current Approaches in eastern EuropeIt is commonly said that the major questions to which research contributes can now only be successfully addressed through approaches that draw simultaneously on multiple academic and professional fields. This view is as persuasive in relation to communication as it is with respect to scientific discovery and innovation. If we understand verbal communication as language organised according to its use in given settings, crucially connected with how those uses are understood, and linked to how such understandings contribute to complex chains of further social action (including further communication), then is difficult to see how any single, current field could resolve the important problems. But seeking to bring fields across the necessary areas into dialogue with one another - less to assess their respective strengths than to forge new approaches - remains a major challenge as well as an obviously important one.Difficulties arise partly because, in engaging with issues of communication, a major obstacle is encountered straightaway: that of clarifying what 'discourse' is, and so getting into a position to benefit from the specialised contributions made by fields including linguistics and semiotics, philosophy, hermeneutics, the history of ideas, psychology, translation studies, politics, studies of the professions, and others. Understanding what 'discourse' involves is complicated by different emphases across these fields as regards the nature of the questions to be addressed, the most suitable terminology and frameworks in which to characterise them, and the most productive methods of enquiry. But in a range of practical initiatives cutting across linguistic and national boundaries, innovative work has taken place leading to the emergence of an increasingly influential, interdisciplinary field.D-ART 2 "Discourse Linguistics and beyond" is a substantial and important contribution to that field. Extending roundtable presentations involving participants principally from Belarus, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Poland, Russia and Ukraine, this volume marks fresh cooperation between scholars working in Western European (German, French, and English) and Eastern European discourse studies traditions. When read together and in relation to each other, the essays perform a number of valuable functions: they describe, contextualise, and compare intellectual traditions that have developed in different language cultures not generally accessible to each other; and they tackle and illuminate more specific issues, including how genre structures our ways of understanding and doing things, how far translation is involved in conceptualization, the role played by verbal discourse in creating national identity, and what challenges are presented by modalities of discourse presentation, especially online.D-ART 2 is a work of international convergence and engagement between scholars. It does not claim to provide clear-cut answers to all the questions it raises. Rather, it forms part of a continuing project of collaboration committed to investigating new kinds of interaction that can be achieved between more traditional, theoretical investigations of 'language' and a range of socially situated studies of communication as a challenge in professional, political and wider cultural settings.Alan Durant Professor of Communication Middlesex University, School of Law

Lexikon der Kunstlerinnen 1700-1900 Saur Verlag KG

Nauki humanistyczne

The Lexikon der Künstlerinnen 1700-1900 (Encyclopaedia of Women Artists 1700-1900) contains the biographies of approximately 3,100 female artists in the German-speaking countries: professional and amateur - aristocratic and bourgeois - students and teachers. The artists in question are those active after 1700 or born in 1850 at the latest. Accordingly, the range extends from baroque, rococo, classicism, romanticism and Biedermeier to realism, naturalism and late impressionism, and in some cases, to art nouveau. Besides presenting biographical details, lengthier portraits also shed light on the artist's private, social and cultural environments. Until now, no other work has displayed such comprehensive coverage of the female artists active during this period. Not only was extensive material gathered on professional and academic artists, but also on many amateurs and little-known artists; some material being examined for the very first time. The resulting picture encompasses to the full extent, the quantity and quality of female artistic work from the late baroque period to the end of the 19th century. Many previously unknown or disregarded female artists were tracked down for the very first time. The term "female artist" covers a wide range of disciplines. Among those included are: oil, pastel and watercolour painters, draughtswomen, illustrators, lithographers, sculptresses, builders, interior decorators, garden designers, daguerreotype photographers, craftswomen, textile artists, patrons and collectors, as well as a few studio managers and publishers. Angelica Kauffmann (1741-1807) was one of the most successful portrait painters in the late 18th century. Maria Ellenrieder (1791-1863), the first female student to be accepted at the Münchner Akademie (Munich Academy) in 1813, was employed as the court painter in Baden from 1829 onwards. These are just two examples of artists who were highly esteemed in their time. In the Lexikon der Künstlerinnen 1700-1900, however, there are many other interesting discoveries to be made: for example, 26 of the listed artists achieved the status of chamber, cabinet or court painters, draughtswomen or embroiders. Also remarkable, are the many cases of memberships of domestic and foreign academies as well as enrolment at art schools. A number of the artists listed worked as "academic artists" or art teachers for aristocratic and royal families. One of the achievements of this encyclopaedia, however, is that it also provides comprehensive information on those women who, due to numerous private and social restrictions, were prevented from embarking on careers as professional artists. The Lexikon der Künstlerinnen 1700-1900 will serve as a reference work and a working tool for both art historians and those carrying out women's studies. It is aimed at art experts, academics, school and university students, as well as all those interested in art and art history.

CONSTANTIN BRANCUSI Constantin Brancusi is one of the greatest of all sculptors, and a key sculptor of the modern era, along with Auguste Rodin and Pablo Picasso. Brancusi's influence can be seen in a wide range of Western sculptors, including Donald Judd, Carl Andre, Henry Moore, Jean Arp, Barbara Hepworth, Minimalists and land artists. This new book studies the religious and mythical dimensions of Constantin Brancusi's distinctive sculptural forms, the 'eggs', 'fishes', 'heads' and 'columns'. His central quest was for the 'essence of things', which resulted in purifying a form until only the essence was left. It was Constantin Brancusi's project to strip away the detritus that had accumulated around sculpture, Henry Moore said, and to offer the pure, simple shape. What Brancusi did was 'to concentrate on very simple shapes, to keep his sculpture, as it were, one-cylindered, to refine and polish a single shape to a degree almost too precious.' As well as being a sculptor, Constantin Brancusi was also an accomplished photographer. Quite a few artists (not all of them sculptors) have expressed  for Brancusi's photographs, and the way he would set up his sculptures in his studio and photograph them at particular times of the day, when the lighting was just right. They are early examples of installation art (and some of the best, too). Andy Goldsworthy said he admired how Brancusi created the right conditions in his studio so that his work 'comes alive at a particular time of the day as the light momentarily touches it'. For Goldsworthy, Brancusi's works were at their best when they were arranged by the sculptor in his studio and photographed. Somehow, it wasn't quite the same when they were displayed in modern art museums (such as the Pompidou Centre in Paris or the Museum of Modern Art in Gotham, which have important Brancusi pieces). Fully illustrated, including many photos of Constantin Brancusi's studio in Paris, Brancusi's works in museums in New York, Washington and L.A., and the art of his contemporaries. With bibliography and notes. ISBN 9781861714343. 180 pages. This new (5th) edition has been revised. www.crmoon.com AUTHOR'S NOTE: The art of Constantin Brancusi never ceases to fascinate and inspire, and it always seems fresh, as if it had been created five minutes ago, no matter how many times you look at it. When you encounter a Brancusi sculpture in a museum, it pops out, clear and direct; there is simply nothing else like Brancusi's art in history. I have tried to explore the key elements of Brancusi's art, and the important events in his development as a sculptor. I have also included comparisons with other artists of the period, and also how Brancusi's art has influenced many subsequent artists.

'Writing a poem is like trying to describe a totemic column which passes right through and beyond the world. We see it, but its existence is elsewhere' - Stanley Diamond, Totems. The Northwest Coast totem pole captivates the imagination. From the first descriptions of these tall carved monuments, totem poles have become central icons of the Northwest Coast region and symbols of its Native inhabitants. Although many of those who gaze at these carvings assume that they are ancient artifacts, the so-called totem pole is a relatively recent artistic development, one that has become immensely important to Northwest Coast people and has simultaneously gained a common place in popular culture from fashion to the funny pages. "The Totem Pole" reconstructs the intercultural history of the art form in its myriad manifestations from the eighteenth century to the present. Aldona Jonaitis and Aaron Glass analyze the totem pole's continual transformation since Europeans first arrived on the scene, investigate its various functions in different contexts, and address the significant influence of colonialism on the proliferation and distribution of carved poles. The authors also describe their theories on the development of the art form: its spread from the Northwest Coast to world's fairs and global theme parks; its integration with the history of tourism and its transformation into a signifier of place; the role of governments, museums, and anthropologists in collecting and restoring poles; and, the part that these carvings have continuously played in Native struggles for control of their cultures and their lands. Short essays by scholars and artists, including Robert Davidson, Bill Holm, Richard Hunt, Nathan Jackson, Vickie Jensen, Andrea Laforet, Susan Point, Charlotte Townsend-Gault, Lyle Wilson, and Robin Wright, provide specific case studies of many of the topics discussed, directly illustrating the various relationships that people have with the totem pole. Aldona Jonaitis is director emerita of the University of Alaska Museum of the North and professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. An art historian who has published widely on Native American art, she is the author of "Art of the Northwest Coast" and "Looking North: Art from the University of Alaska Museum", among other titles. Aaron Glass is an assistant professor at the Bard Graduate Center in New York City, where he teaches anthropology of art, museums, and material culture. He has published on visual art, media, and performance among First Nations on the Northwest Coast and has produced the documentary film "In Search of the Hamat'sa: A Tale of Headhunting".

"5000 Years of Korean Martial Art" is a one of a kind history book.  No other Korean martial art history book on the market is as complete and in-depth.  Citing historical references for support, and featuring many rare pictures and some images that are not available from any other published source.  This book attempts to place Korean martial arts in it's proper historical perspective in relationship to Chinese and Japanese martial arts.  Both Chinese and Japanese martial arts have well known and documented histories, so much so that they have completely overshadowed Korean martial art history.  I have attempted to compensate for that overshadowing by focusing on the successes of the Korean martial arts throughout history. Barry Harmon has a BA degree in "Psychosomatics and Alternative Healing Studies" from San Francisco State University.  He has an acupuncture degree from the San Francisco College of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine.  He is certified nationally through the NCCAOM and license to practice acupuncture in Texas.  In addition to his academics, he has been training and studying martial arts since 1965 and Kuk Sool Won since 1971.  In 2002 KBS (Korean Broadcasting System) featured Master Harmon and his family in an hour long documentary which was aired throughout South Korea. Master Harmon currently holds an 9th degree black belt in Kuk Sool Won and has been featured in numerous martial arts magazines.  In 2005 he was chosen by Tae Kwan Do Times magazine as instructor of the year.  He has taught martial arts in many countries around the world including South Korea.

Leonardo Da Vinci PRASA BALTYCKA

Literatura obcojęzyczna

'Isaacson's scholarship is impressive-he cites not only primary sources but secondary materials by art critics, essayists, and da Vinci's other biographers. This is a monumental tribute to a titanic figure.' - Publisher's Weekly 'To read this magnificent biography of Leonardo da Vinci is to take a tour through the life and works of one of the most extraordinary human beings of all time in the company of the most engaging, informed, and insightful guide imaginable. Walter Isaacson is at once a true scholar and a spellbinding writer. And what a wealth of lessons there are to be learned in these pages.' David McCullough Based on thousands of pages from Leonardo's astonishing notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, Walter Isaacson weaves a narrative that connects his art to his science. He shows how Leonardo's genius was based on skills we can improve in ourselves, such as passionate curiosity, careful observation, and an imagination so playful that it flirted with fantasy. He produced the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and technology. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry. His ability to stand at the crossroads of the humanities and the sciences, made iconic by his drawing of Vitruvian Man, made him history's most creative genius. His creativity, like that of other great innovators, came from having wide-ranging passions. He peeled flesh off the faces of cadavers, drew the muscles that move the lips, and then painted history's most memorable smile. He explored the math of optics, showed how light rays strike the cornea, and produced illusions of changing perspectives in The Last Supper. Isaacson also describes how Leonardo's lifelong enthusiasm for staging theatrical productions informed his paintings and inventions. Leonardo's delight at combining diverse passions remains the ultimate recipe for creativity. So, too, does his ease at being a bit of a misfit: illegitimate, gay, vegetarian, left-handed, easily distracted, and at times heretical. His life should remind us of the importance of instilling, both in ourselves and our children, not just received knowledge but a willingness to question it-to be imaginative and, like talented misfits and rebels in any era, to think different.
