Politics of erasure TAKO

Sztuka i kultura / Sztuka

The book Politics of Erasure. From “Damnatio Memoriae” to Alluring Void on the one hand deals with the strategies of widely understood erasure in visual arts (i.e. exclusion, annulment and depreciation) in terms of particular works of art, museum narrations or urban spaces; on the other hand, it attempts to look at the ways of writing history because here the required and necessary virtue of synthesis sometimes transforms into an injurious scheme. Thus, oscillation between the general consciousness of the method and its precise use within case studies becomes not only a presentation of significant works of the Polish art of the 20th century showed in the general European context, but also a reflection on the craft of the historian, its limitations and possibilities. The “politics of erasure” in the title does not link only with the ruthless power struggle hostile to any signs of resistance, it can also be a strategy aiming at widening our perception or negotiating what is visible and real. In this last case it does not reconcile itself to the terror of the visible and becomes a persevering attempt to expand the range of imagination and activate memory and intuition.

After the Roman empire fell, medieval Europe continued to be fascinated by Rome itself, the 'chief of cities'. Once the hub of empire, in the early medieval period Rome became an important centre for western Christianity, first of all as the place where Peter, Paul and many other important early Christian saints were martyred: their deaths for the Christian faith gave the city the appellation "Roma Felix", "Happy Rome". But in Rome the history of the faith, embodied in the shrines of the martyrs, coexisted with the living centre of the western Latin church. Because Peter had been recognised by Christ as chief among the apostles and was understood to have been the first bishop of Rome, his successors were acknowledged as patriarchs of the West and Rome became the focal point around which the western Latin church came to be organised. This book explores ways in which Rome itself was preserved, envisioned, and transformed by its residents, and also by the many pilgrims who flocked to the shrines of the martyrs. It considers how northern European cultures (in particular, the Irish and English) imagined and imitated the city as they understood it. The fifteen articles presented here range from the fourth to the twelfth century and span the fields of history, art history, urban topography, liturgical studies and numismatics. They provide an introduction to current thinking about the ways in which medieval people responded to the material remains of Rome's classical and early Christian past, and to the associations of centrality, spirituality, and authority which the city of Rome embodied for the earlier Middle Ages.

Romanticism of St. Francis Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Romanticism of St. Francis: And Other Studies in the Genius of the Franciscans To those who look upon the history of the past as something more than a subject for pleasurable curiosity, who regard it rather as a mirror of the workings of the human spirit, from which one might gain some measure of the wisdom of experience, the main interest will always lie not in the mere spectacle or stage-setting of historic personages and events but rather in the more universal principles or truths of life itself to which the phenomena of history bear witness. We really know men only in so far as we know the ideals and motives by which they act; and a man's ultimate value to the world is not so much in himself as in the ideas and ideals by which he lives. This is true whether we take men individually or as they act together in some body corporate. Moreover, the phenomena of history are of little moment to practical knowledge save as they are connected in our thought with the main current of the world's life in which the human spirit at all times finds its affinity with the past. In this book an attempt is made to gauge the real value of the life and genius of the Franciscans in relation to the human spirit itself. It is indeed but an inchoate attempt which others perhaps will improve upon if they deem the subject of sufficiently vital interest. Historic Links Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Historic Links: Topographical Aids to the Reading of History When a busy worker is asked to write a few words by way of Preface to some book in which he has professed an interest, he may usually hope to excuse himself by a general plea of incompetence or a special plea of over-work. In the present case either of these excuses might have been offered with perfect sincerity, but neither would have commended itself to my former student, whose faith is great, or to my publishers of old whose requirements in the matter of space are not exacting. Moreover having privately expressed my firm conviction that there was room, even in the present crowded region of historical literature, for this modest little work, I could scarcely refuse to publish my opinion when an opportunity presented itself. With these excuses for an unwonted egotism I will address myself to my appointed task. It would not be difficult to show that in the present day the demand for "culture books" dealing with the social aspects of our national history is well maintained. Indeed, without disparagement of any living writer, it might be thought that the supply is unequal to the demand, in quantity and quality alike. The vast output, during recent years, of published Records and other original materials, if it has not yet affected the historical ideals of our younger students, is beginning to influence the methods of their teachers. The new generation of history graduates, men and women who follow the career of teachers in secondary schools and private families, have felt the meaning of historical research and demand a standard of historical literature far above the level of the complacent studies pursued by their predecessors. Account of the Battle of the Chateauguay Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from An Account of the Battle of the Chateauguay: Being a Lecture Delivered at Ormstown, March 8th, 1889; With Some Local and Personal Notes On October 26th, 1888, the Chateauguay Literary and Historical Society was organized at Ormstown, Quebec, to foster Canadian patriotism by encouraging the study of Canadian history and Canadian literature. The Society began its labours at home, taking as its subject the battle whence it derives its name. Mr. W. D. Lighthall, M A., B. C. L., an honorary member, was asked to prepare an account of that victory, and kindly responded by his lecture, which he delivered before the Society on March 8th, 1889. Pleasure is now felt in offering this lecture, in the interests of the Society, to the Canadian world, no apology being required at a time when patriotic literature is in great demand. Mr. Lighthall's researches have been discussed by the members, and the belief is prevalent that his work touching this important item of history, in so far as accuracy is concerned, stands unrivalled, the previous authorities having been carefully compared and their testimony put together. In the Appendix will be found a number of notes having a bearing on the battle and its times. The portrait frontispiece is from a line engraving kindly lent by Gerald E. Hart, Esq., President of the Society for Historical Studies. The drawing of the map, after the design of the author, is due to J. A. U. Beaudry, Esq., C. E., Curator of the Antiquarian Society of Montreal. The first part of the account is partly based upon R. Christie's History of Lower Canada; but William James' Military Occurrences of the War of 1812, was found the most accurate in statistical details, and is, therefore, frequently followed. Other authorities are referred to in their places. The battle of Chateauguay, in view of the important results that followed it, is an event which all Canadians will appreciate, and to which posterity will have reason to point the finger of admiration. Mohawk Valley and Lake Ontario (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Mohawk Valley and Lake Ontario The author and the publishers of the Great Lakes Series feel that it is proper for them to set forth briefly the principles which have guided them in preparing these supplementary readers. Though we realize that our work needs to be interesting, we do not wish it to be merely entertaining. These readers are school books and are not intended as a recreation for idle hours. Therefore we have been careful not to give too much space to stories of battles and skirmishes or to picturesque Indian legends. Because the reading lesson is too often but slightly related to the rest of the curriculum, we have tried to supplement the work in other studies by laying stress upon the more obvious relations between geography, history and commerce. Exploration and trade in America have both romantic and practical aspects, and one or the other of these is sure to appeal to wideawake children. The scenes visited in these books offer abundant material of both kinds - the chief difficulty has been to select. In deciding upon the story form, as a convenient thread upon which to string what we wish to tell, we have tried to steer clear of two temptations. We do not intend that these stories shall be guide-books; therefore we have been sparing of mere dates and figures. Also, we do not wish to make James and Carrie a pair of precocious little prigs, escorted by a pedant. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Orwell and Marxism I B TAURIS ACADEMIC

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Whether as a fighter in the Spanish Civil War, an advocate of patriotic Socialism or a left-wing opponent of the Soviet Union, George Orwell was the ultimate outsider in politics - insecure, scornful of orthodoxies, cussedly independent.§Best known today as the author of Animal Farm and Nineteen Eighty-Four, Orwell also wrote seven other full-length books and a vast number of essays, articles and reviews. A pioneering cultural critic, he addressed a range of important issues including art, literature, Englishness, mass counication and the spectre of totalitarianism. Famously describing his own background as "lower-upper-middle class", Orwell had a complex relationship with Marxism and all his work reflects the influence of British counism.§Through close analysis of Orwells writings as well as his historical and literary context, Philip Bounds has produced an important study of one of the iconic writers of the 20th century. Orwell and Marxism offers a thorough introduction to Orwell the intellectual, reviving his reputation as a serious cultural thinker and documenting his most important influences, as well as a convincing portrait of British Marxism and society in the 1930s and 40s.'A really impressive piece of work. This is one of the best books on Orwell I have read recently. An important contribution that points the direction Orwell studies should take.' Excerpt from Selections From the Writings of Hurrish Chunder Mookerji: Compiled From the Hindoo Patriot A literary man is best remembered by his works. But though on this account we certainly attach great weight to this collection of his writings we do not żatter ourselves with the idea that this volume would be anything like a fitting memorial to the man who, more than any other single man, has been responsible for the inspiration of national life at any rate in Bengal. For, we do not rate the life and work of Hurrish Chunder Mookerji as a merely brilliant career. We can trace to him the source and the nourish ment of that political life in our people whose force and importance we are only beginning to appreciate and which are no doubt big with huge possibilities in the future. For of the little band of earnest men who żourished in the early days of English education in India and helped to drag India out of the slough of ignorance and inertia into which she was fallen, Burrish Chunder was about the foremost. And what a brilliant set of men they were One cannot recall their careers without a refreshing sense of the life and vigour that characterised them. Men deeply imbued with western thought and culture 3 whose studies in the different depart ments of learning of the day went to depths which are out of fashion in these busy days of scrappy, knowledge 3 men who felt the ignorance around them like a dense mist which must be cleared, men inspired with a lofty desire to raise their country from these depths and teach her to emulate the healthy and vigorous ideals of life and thought that England opened before them - these were the men who lived in the days of Hurrish Chunder Mookerji, - and amongst them there was none more brilliant, none more enthusiastic and none who has left a more abiding mark on the history of our people than Hurrish Chunder Mookerji. Brain Fuel Evolution - 2862203135

Brain Fuel Evolution Oriole Publishing L.L.C.

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

We've learned a lot about the brain: which nutrients are required to make neurotransmitters, which nutrient deficiencies cause depression, and even which nutrients improve memory and intelligence. Wouldn't it make sense, then, to eat "brain foods" that are high in these "brain fuel" nutrients? Fortunately, the USDA recently analyzed several thousand foods for their nutrient contents, so we now know what these brain foods are and can add them to our diet. That's the practical side of this research. The "cool" side is that, in looking back through human history, we discover that major advances in civilization often occurred after new brain foods came into the diet, during the Axial Age, Ancient Greece, the Renaissance, the Elizabethan Era and 19th century France, to name a few. We also see that, in the cases where the brain foods were removed from the diet, the civilizations began to deteriorate shortly thereafter. We can even go back to Paleolithic times and explain the transition from archaic to modern man using simply the concepts of brain fuels and brain foods. These historical "case studies" underscore the necessity of brain foods in human evolution. Nutrients are the fundamental fuel for the brain, but delivering them to the body is an art. If culture is king, then cuisine is queen. Nonetheless, it has been mainly serendipity that has been responsible for these improved cuisines. Multiple factors, including geography, technology and even politics, have time and again led randomly to an improved mix of brain fuels. We judge civilizations in many ways. One way is to look at the visual arts and assess the technical expertise and the artistic expression represented there. Looking within civilizations we see large changes in one or both of these features after a major increase in brain food availability, as well as major advances in philosophy, literature and other arts. The study of science (natural philosophy) can trace its roots to the serendipitous confluence of all the brain fuels in abundant supply in Ancient Greece. The times and places examined here include the first civilizations (Ancient Egypt, Indus Valley Civilization, Mesoamerica, and Inca Empire), the Pan-Asian Awakening in the 6th Century BC (a few decades of the Axial Age), the three eras with the most abundant brain fuels (Ancient Greece, Renaissance Tuscany and 19th Century France), and places where a partial abundance of brain fuels resulted in advancements in specific fields (Elizabethan England, Dutch Golden Age, Scottish Enlightenment). There are also specific examples of civilizations where brain fuels were intentionally restricted to create aggression in warfare (Roman legions and Mongol horsemen). Currently on the scene there are several popular modern diets (e.g. Atkins, Paleo, Mediterranean), and an analysis of these shows that, while they all express some fundamental tenets that improve the level of brain fuel nutrients, each one exhibits a deficit in one or more of them. We consider these diets from a brain fuels perspective and discuss how to adapt them in an easy and sustainable manner to maximize mental performance.

Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 12 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Foreign Quarterly Review, Vol. 12: July and October, M. DCCC. XXXIII The lives which have been devoted most assiduously and successfully to the intellectual pursuits of science, are seldom those which are most fertile in incident, or which afford the best subject-matter for the biographer. Were it otherwise, that of Newton, whose high destiny it was to unravel the mechanism of the universe, and who contributed so largely to the advancement of natural knowledge, would be one of the most interesting and instructive that ever was written. Yet the biography of Newton is little else than a general history of the progress of the mathematical and physical sciences during the age in which he lived. Exclusive of his scientific discoveries, his life presents very few incidents of peculiar interest, or from which we may derive any lessons of practical wisdom. Thirty years of it, after the age of boyhood, he passed in the retirement of a college, closely engaged in profound studies, and having very little commerce with the world. For a short time he occupied a seat in Parliament, where he made no conspicuous figure; and though he afterwards held the office of Master of the Mint, yet he neither took an active part in public affairs, nor connected himself in any way with the political history of his country. The latter part of it - and it was prolonged to the full term of human existence - differed in no respect from that of thousands of ordinary men, in affluent circumstances, of a literary turn, and quietly going through a specified routine of official duty. Accordingly, it is not from anecdotes relating to his domestic life, but in the study of those immortal works which he has left behind him, that we can discover his superiority over other men, or learn the vast extent of the obligation which the world owes to his genius. Jesuits University Of Toronto Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In recent years scholars in a range of disciplines have begun to re-evaluate the history of the Society of Jesus. Approaching the subject with new questions and methods, they have reconsidered the importance of the Society in many sectors, including those related to the sciences and the arts. They have also looked at the Jesuits as emblematic of certain traits of early modern Europeans, especially as those Europeans interacted with 'the Other' in Asia and the Americas.Originating in an international conference held at Boston College in 1997, the thirty-five essays here reflect this new historiographical trend. Focusing on the Old Society- the Society before its suppression in 1773 by papal edict- they examine the worldwide Jesuit undertaking in such fields as music, art, architecture, devotional writing, mathematics, physics, astronomy, natural history, public performance, and education, and they give special attention to the Jesuits' interaction with non-European cultures, in North and South America, China, India, and the Philippines. A picture emerges not only of the individual Jesuit, who might be missionary, diplomat, architect, and playwright over the course of his life in the Society, but also of the immense and many-faceted Jesuit enterprise as forming a kind of 'cultural ecosystem'.The Jesuits of the Old Society liked to think they had a way of proceeding special to themselves. The question, Was there a Jesuit style, a Jesuit corporate culture? is the thread that runs through this interdisciplinary collection of studies.
