'Isaacson's scholarship is impressive-he cites not only primary sources but secondary materials by art critics, essayists, and da Vinci's other biographers. This is a monumental tribute to a titanic figure.' - Publisher's Weekly 'To read this magnificent biography of Leonardo da Vinci is to take a tour through the life and works of one of the most extraordinary human beings of all time in the company of the most engaging, informed, and insightful guide imaginable. Walter Isaacson is at once a true scholar and a spellbinding writer. And what a wealth of lessons there are to be learned in these pages.' David McCullough Based on thousands of pages from Leonardo's astonishing notebooks and new discoveries about his life and work, Walter Isaacson weaves a narrative that connects his art to his science. He shows how Leonardo's genius was based on skills we can improve in ourselves, such as passionate curiosity, careful observation, and an imagination so playful that it flirted with fantasy. He produced the two most famous paintings in history, The Last Supper and the Mona Lisa. But in his own mind, he was just as much a man of science and technology. With a passion that sometimes became obsessive, he pursued innovative studies of anatomy, fossils, birds, the heart, flying machines, botany, geology, and weaponry. His ability to stand at the crossroads of the humanities and the sciences, made iconic by his drawing of Vitruvian Man, made him history's most creative genius. His creativity, like that of other great innovators, came from having wide-ranging passions. He peeled flesh off the faces of cadavers, drew the muscles that move the lips, and then painted history's most memorable smile. He explored the math of optics, showed how light rays strike the cornea, and produced illusions of changing perspectives in The Last Supper. Isaacson also describes how Leonardo's lifelong enthusiasm for staging theatrical productions informed his paintings and inventions. Leonardo's delight at combining diverse passions remains the ultimate recipe for creativity. So, too, does his ease at being a bit of a misfit: illegitimate, gay, vegetarian, left-handed, easily distracted, and at times heretical. His life should remind us of the importance of instilling, both in ourselves and our children, not just received knowledge but a willingness to question it-to be imaginative and, like talented misfits and rebels in any era, to think different.

Discourse linguistics and beyond Current Approaches in eastern Europe It is commonly said that the major questions to which research contributes can now only be successfully addressed through approaches that draw simultaneously on multiple academic and professional fields. This view is as persuasive in relation to communication as it is with respect to scientific discovery and innovation. If we understand verbal communication as language organised according to its use in given settings, crucially connected with how those uses are understood, and linked to how such understandings contribute to complex chains of further social action (including further communication), then is difficult to see how any single, current field could resolve the important problems. But seeking to bring fields across the necessary areas into dialogue with one another - less to assess their respective strengths than to forge new approaches - remains a major challenge as well as an obviously important one. Difficulties arise partly because, in engaging with issues of communication, a major obstacle is encountered straightaway: that of clarifying what 'discourse' is, and so getting into a position to benefit from the specialised contributions made by fields including linguistics and semiotics, philosophy, hermeneutics, the history of ideas, psychology, translation studies, politics, studies of the professions, and others. Understanding what 'discourse' involves is complicated by different emphases across these fields as regards the nature of the questions to be addressed, the most suitable terminology and frameworks in which to characterise them, and the most productive methods of enquiry. But in a range of practical initiatives cutting across linguistic and national boundaries, innovative work has taken place leading to the emergence of an increasingly influential, interdisciplinary field. D-ART 2 "Discourse Linguistics and beyond" is a substantial and important contribution to that field. Extending roundtable presentations involving participants principally from Belarus, the Czech Republic, Latvia, Poland, Russia and Ukraine, this volume marks fresh cooperation between scholars working in Western European (German, French, and English) and Eastern European discourse studies traditions. When read together and in relation to each other, the essays perform a number of valuable functions: they describe, contextualise, and compare intellectual traditions that have developed in different language cultures not generally accessible to each other; and they tackle and illuminate more specific issues, including how genre structures our ways of understanding and doing things, how far translation is involved in conceptualization, the role played by verbal discourse in creating national identity, and what challenges are presented by modalities of discourse presentation, especially online. D-ART 2 is a work of international convergence and engagement between scholars. It does not claim to provide clear-cut answers to all the questions it raises. Rather, it forms part of a continuing project of collaboration committed to investigating new kinds of interaction that can be achieved between more traditional, theoretical investigations of 'language' and a range of socially situated studies of communication as a challenge in professional, political and wider cultural settings. Outreach: Innovative Practices for Archives and Special Collections explores how archives of different sizes and types are reaching out to new potential users and increasing awareness of programs and collections. The book features twelve case studies that demonstrate ideas that can be transferred into many other settings. Some of the practices described in the case studies rely primarily on technology and the Web to interact with the public, while others are centered on face-to-face activities. The case studies featured are 1.The Oregon Archives Crawl: Engaging New Users and Advocates 2.Moved by the Spirit: Opportunistic Promotion of the Hamilton Family Seance Collection 3.Working Within the Law: Public Programming and Continuing Education 4.Staying Connected: Engaging Alumni and Students to Digitize the Carl "Pappy" Fehr Choral Music Collection 5."Pin"pointing Success: Assessing the Value of Pinterest and Historypin for Special Collections Outreach 6.Creating a New Learning Center: Designing a Space to Support Multiple Outreach Goals 7."Wikipedia is made of people!": Revelations from Collaborating with the World's Most Popular Encyclopedia 8.2 1 Revolutions: New Art from Old Objects 9.Happy Accidents and Unintended Consequences: How We Named Our Tribble 10.Navigating Nightingale: Creating an App Out of Archives 11.DIY History: Redesigning a Platform for a Transcription Crowdsourcing Initiative 12.Taking Preservation to the People: Educating the Public About Personal Digital Archiving All twelve case studies look at outreach as identifying the organization's intended audience, building new ways of reaching them, and helping the organization achieve its mission. Each also reflects a philosophy of experimentation that is perhaps the most critical ingredient for any organization interested in developing its own "innovative" practices. This volume will be useful to those working in archives and special collections as well as other cultural heritage organizations, and provides ideas ranging from those that require long-term planning and coordination to those that could be immediately implemented. It also provides students and educators in archives, library, and public history graduate programs a resource for understanding the variety of ways people conduct outreach in the field today and the kinds of strategies archivists are using to attract new users to collections.

Religion of Ruskin, the Life and Works of John Ruskin Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Religion of Ruskin, the Life and Works of John Ruskin: A Biographical and Anthological Study In preparing Books II to VI of this Authology the writings of Ruskin have first been arranged, as far as seemed practicable, into groups of subjects - then quoted in the chronological order of the works in each group. The reader may thus find the progress of the great Author's religious mind in his own words. All Ruskin's larger works were arranged by himself, or under his direction, into volumes, parts, sections, chapters and paragraphs, to which are often attached lengthy prefaces and appendices. The method adopted in the following selections is to give the name and number of the volume at the head of the chapter, letting the Author's own paragraph number stand at the beginning of each quotation, and giving the further references at the end. Thus on page 105 of this volume will be found paragraphs on "Sensuality Fatal to Beauty in Art" The numbers 21 and 24 are those of Ruskin's own paragraphing and this, with Pt. Ill, Sec. 1, Ch. 14, puts the reader in possession of the full reference, viz.: Modern Painters, Vol. II, Part III, Section 1,Chapter 14, Paragraphs 21, 24. In some instances, where the quotations are continuous, the references to the chapters, etc., are only given at the end of several, but the numbers of the paragraphs are always given. This is especially notable of Vol. IV, Modem Painters. In still other instances no reference is needed other than the number of the paragraph of the work from which it is taken. It must be understood that the topical headlines are our own and not Ruskin's. "Ruskin's Complete Works." "Life of John Ruskin," Collingwood. "John Ruskin," Frederick Harrison. "John Ruskin, Social Reformer," J. A. Hobson. "An Introduction to the Writings of John Ruskin," Vida D. Scudder. "Letters to the Clergy," F. A. Malleson. "Letters to M. G. and H. G." Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In 1832-34, German scientist Prince Maximilian of Wied-Neuwied travelled the interior regions of North America to document what he regarded as vanishing cultures. Accompanying him was the twenty-two-year-old Swiss artist Karl Bodmer (1809-93), whom Maximilian employed to create a "faithful and vivid image" of America and its people. Bodmer's magnificent watercolor paintings and sketches from the expedition are famous; less known today are the resulting engravings and prints, which helped shape Europeans' impressions of Native Americans and of the United States. Upon their return to Europe, Maximilian began the difficult task of turning his field notes and journals into a readable account of his journey, while Bodmer concentrated on the equally complicated process of translating his drawings and watercolors into engravings to accompany the text.During the nearly ten-year effort it took to create "Travels in the Interior of North America, 1832-34", many of the eighty-one images underwent significant changes: Bodmer and his team of some thirty engravers altered landscapes and portraits based on Maximilian's input, modified imprecise inscriptions, and reengraved plates for future printings. "Karl Bodmer's North American Prints" is the first book to systematically and comprehensively document and interpret these changes to the prints. Each version - or state - is cataloged, discussed, and linked to one of the five distinct editions. Other issues, including coloring, paper, and dates, are examined. The two essays, eighty-one entries, and six appendixes contained in this volume elucidate all aspects of the project, with special attention to the number of legitimate and illegitimate reproductions the popular North American prints engendered and to Bodmer's post-expedition output as a printmaker.Brandon K. Soldiers True Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Soldiers True: The Story of the One Hundred and Eleventh Regiment Pennsylvania Veteran Volunteers, and of Its Campaigns in the War, for the Union 1861 1865 This book is not a history of the civil war, nor does it contain an exhaustive account of any one of its campaigns. It is the story of but one of the hundreds of regiments which fought that war through to final victory. This particular regiment does not claim precedence of service or merit over any other, and any attempt to assume that it did would be promptly condemned by its survivors. It was simply one battalion of Soldiers True, who, with their honored comrades from Pennsylvania and every other loyal State, endeavored to perform unostentatiously and faithfully the work that was assigned to them. And yet the book is history. The actual story of the great war can never be really known until the service of each participating regiment and battery and ship is narrated; and, therefore, the present volume is believed to contain an essential and important part of the history of the American nation in the most momentous crisis of its existence. The work was undertaken at the earnest and unanimous request of the survivors of the command, and has been indorsed by them as the official history of the regiment. But it was written not for them and their friends only, but for all readers who are interested in civil war studies. Its preparation has been a labor of love, and such patience and care have attended it as the author could command amid the daily exactions of an important city pastorate. In this new collection of essays on the cinema, all written over the last ten years, Peter Wollen explores an extraordinarily wide range of topics, stretching from an analysis of time in film and video art to a study of Riff-Raff Realism in British film. Provocative essays discuss the work both of established auteur directors such as Howard Hawks and Alfred Hitchcock as well as the filmmaking careers of such experimental moviemakers as William Burroughs and Viking Eggeling, the dadaist pioneer of abstract film. The collection also includes fascinating studies of a number of film classics, such as John Huston's Freud, Jean Renoir's Rules of the Game and Ridley Scott's Blade Runner. Other essays deal with the relationship of film to the other arts, such as dance and architecture, and explore the interaction between film and anthropology. This is not a theoretical book but is one that suggests new approaches to thinking about film and many unexpected connections between film studies and the history of such strangely related activities as espionage, psychoanalysis, dance, architecture, anthropology, Stalinism, love of speed and digital technology. Peter Wollen's book new is based on the premise that there are no fixed ways of writing about the film but, rather, a plethora of paths leading in very different directions, each contributing to a new understanding of the twentieth century's major art form.

In Russia, legislation on the separation of church and state in early 1918 marginalized religious faith and raised pressing questions about what was to be done with church buildings. While associated with suspect beliefs, they were also regarded as structures with potential practical uses, and some were considered works of art. This engaging study draws on religious anthropology, sociology, cultural studies, and history to explore the fate of these "socialist churches," showing how attitudes and practices related to them were shaped both by laws on the preservation of monuments and anti-religious measures. Advocates of preservation, while sincere in their desire to save the buildings, were indifferent, if not hostile, to their religious purpose. Believers, on the other hand, regarded preservation laws as irritants, except when they provided leverage for use of the buildings by church communities. The situation was eased by the growing rapprochement of the Orthodox Church and Soviet state organizations after 1943, but not fully resolved until the Soviet Union fell apart. Based on abundant archival documentation, Catriona Kelly's powerful narrative portrays the human tragedies and compromises, but also the remarkable achievements, of those who fought to preserve these important buildings over the course of seven decades of state atheism. Socialist Churches will appeal to specialists, students, and general readers interested in church history, the history of architecture, and Russian art, history, and cultural studies.

Dice, Cards, Wheels A Different History of French Culture Thomas M. Kavanagh "With his connoisseur's knowledge (and manifest love) of the rules, and ruses, of games and the culture that they shape, Kavanagh makes a convincing case that gambling ought to be considered not a moral failing or individual pathology but a conspicuous, and uncommonly revelatory, practice that sets the social scene that it dramatizes."--Journal of Modern History Gambling has been a practice central to many cultures throughout history. In Dice, Cards, Wheels, Thomas M. Kavanagh scrutinizes the changing face of the gambler in France over a period of eight centuries, using gambling and its representations in literature as a lens through which to observe French culture. Kavanagh argues that the way people gamble tells us something otherwise unrecognized about the values, conflicts, and cultures that define a period or class. To gamble is to enter a world traced out by the rules and protocols of the game the gambler plays. That world may be an alternative to the established order, but the shape and structure of the game reveal indirectly hidden tensions, fears, and prohibitions. Drawing on literature from the Middle Ages to the present, Kavanagh reconstructs the figure of the gambler and his evolving personae. He examines, among other examples, Bodel's dicing in a twelfth-century tavern for the conversion of the Muslim world; Pascal's post-Reformation redefinition of salvation as the gambler's prize; the aristocratic libertine's celebration of the bluff; and Balzac's, Barbey d'Aurevilly's, and Bourget's nineteenth-century revisions of the gambler. Dice, Cards, Wheels embraces the tremendous breadth of French history and emerges as a broad-ranging study of the different forms of gambling, from the dice games of the Middle Ages to the digital slot machines of the twenty-first century, and what those games tell us about French culture and history. Thomas M. Kavanagh is Professor of French at Yale University. Among his previous books is Esthetics of the Moment: Literature and Art in the French Enlightenment. Critical Authors & Issues 2005 | 264 pages | 6 x 9 | 2 illus. "Between 1170 and 1190 in Alsace, Abbess Herrad compiled for her canonesses an elaborate manuscript, the Hortus deliciarum, which combined resplendent images with quotations from more than fifty texts to portray a history of the Christian church across time and through eternity. Destroyed in a bombing during the 1870 siege of Strasbourg, Herradżs lavishly illuminated manuscript was one of the earliest works created by a woman expressly for other women, the nuns training at the Hohenbourg abbey. In this close study of the art and history of the Hortus deliciarum, Danielle Joyner shows how the book reflected twelfth-century concerns, such as emphasizing a historical interpretation of the Bible and reconciling scientific and theological accounts of the cosmos. She analyzes the images, texts, ideas, and processes at work in the manuscript and offers insights into how it configured a history of the Church in the temporal world as a guide to achieving eternal salvation. By tracing the flexibility and efficacy of the multiple visions employed in the manuscript, Joyner explores how the Hortus deliciarum crafted a deeper understanding of the integral role of time in medieval constructions of history, the cosmos, and humanityżs place within them. Scholars and students of art history, medieval and early modern studies, religion, gender, and the history of the book will find Joynerżs work especially valuable, compelling, and provoking.

This book is devoted to paintings and sculpture of the Soviet period, so from 1920 to 1991, a period with a unique place in art history in its own country and internationally. It embraces dozens of stylistic tendencies - including Socialist Realism, Impressionism and Severe Style - that gave birth to and replaced each other at a pace unknown in previous centuries.Clearly divided into two parts, the first two chapters deal with Soviet Art, the latter two with Soviet Sculpture. Among the select group of artists featured are Vasily Baksheyev, the twentieth-century 'custodian' of the Levitanesque lyrical landscape and Vitold Bialynitsky-Birulia, who remained loyal to the Moderne to the end of his days. The traditions of the Moscow School of Painting are represented by Piotr Konchalovsky and Igor Grabar. There follows a brilliant constellation of figures in post-war art - Victor Gavrilov, Alexei and Sergei Tkachev, Vladimir Stozharov and Tair Salakhov - all inheriting from their predecessors an accomplished mastery for experimentation, bold, uninhibited and profoundly human, thus proving the inexhaustible potential and vitality of the Moscow School of Painting. The chapters on sculpture augment an art form that for decades took second place to painting in studies of the Soviet oeuvre. We see here how in addition to producing large public monuments, Soviet sculptors created a more personal body of work in their studios, using stone, wood, bronze and plaster. Accomplished sculptors of the period, and featured here, include Aleksandr Matveev, Vera Mukhina, Sergei Konenkov and Elena Yanson-Manizer. Russian museums have recently started to rediscover their collections, and the Tretyakov now exhibits sculpture throughout its Soviet art galleries.
