Ladies Like Us: A Modern Girl's Guide to Self-Discovery, Self-Confidence and Love The Darling Academy
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Ladies Like Us - A modern girl's guide to self-discovery, self-confidence and love. Society has long been failing generations of young women. Since the 1960s, the liberalisation of the feminine identity brought about a rapid decline in common courtesy, grace, morality and manners and has almost wiped out the value of what it means to be a lady. We have been told to set aside dreams of an old-fashioned romance in favour of discovering our sexuality, despite what our hearts tell us. Being "ladylike" has fallen aside for the rise of the sell-out sexy celebrity we are told to emulate. This movement has done little to help how young ladies view their God-given feminine identity today. Yet quietly, there is an underground movement among young women who are embracing old-fashioned values and returning to their original dreams after all that exhausting bra burning and man bashing. Gone are the six inch heels, boob jobs, big gobs and fake beauty and in its place a classy, kind, educated and romantic young woman worthy of catching any prince. The Darling Academy is a spiritual finishing school for any young woman who wishes to: Live free from negative thinking and crippling self-doubt Be graceful and elegant regardless of modern pressures and trends Learn to embrace her feminine energy and still "have it all" Enjoy and nurture herself and her relationships right now Have clear hope for her future and follow her dreams Ladies Like Us, the debut book from The Darling Academy shares honest, modern, fun and informative guidance on what it really means to be a young lady today. From finding your identity as a lady and feeling at home in your skin, to cultivating true grace, quiet self-confidence and how to surround yourself with everyday happiness. Welcome to the modern finishing school for ladies, we're glad you're joining us.

How To Live Like A Lady Rowman & Littlefield
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
What makes a lady? It's what the French (who know about these things) call je ne sais quoi. It's a certain something that results from the delicate combination of elegance, charm, and wit. No matter how good looking, wealthy, or accomplished a woman might be, she isn't living the life of a lady until she behaves like one. How to Live Like a Lady is a handbook that will guide any woman, manicured hand in manicured hand, to a lifestyle of manners, style, and elan.

Life Lived Like a Story University of Nebraska Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
"This is an exemplary work...It is thorough, clear, and wonderfully detailed. What's more, it is co-authoredin a real, rather than a fictive sense, bringing to the reader a kind of authenticity and bite that is rarely available...Certainly specialists will be fascinated with this study, but it is so readable, so interesting, so innovative, that I think it will appeal to a wide audience...[It] should be a cornerstone in Native American studies. And essential reading in women's studies, northern studies, and to anyone curious about alternative ways of seeing the world and living a life. It ultimately stands alone, proof that there is progress in anthropological method and description."--Michael Dorris, author of The Broken Cord. "There is pure gold here for those who want to understand the rules of the old ways...[The book] has a convincing sureness, an intensity which cannot be denied, a strong sense of family...Candidly, and often with sly humour, the three women discuss early white-Indian relations, the Klondik gold rush, the epidemics, the starvation, the healthy and wealthy times, and building of the Alaska Highway...Integrity is here, and wisdom. There is no doubting the authenticity of the voices. As women, they had power and they used it wisely, and through their words and Cruikshank's skills, you will change your mind if you think the anthropological approach to oral history can only be dull."--Barry Broadfoot, Toronto Globe and Mail. Of Athapaskan and Tlingit ancestry, Angela Sidney, Kitty Smith, and Annie Ned lived in the southern Yukon Territory for nearly a century. They collaborated with Julie Cruikshank, an assistant professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, to produce this unique kind of autobiography. Cruikshank's books include The Stolen Woman: Female Journeys in Tagish and Tutchone Narrative (1982).

Woman of a Thousand Secrets St. Martins
Powieść historyczna, WojennaPowieść zagranicznaLiteratura kobieca
What drew me initially to this work is the fact that I have visited both Tikal and Copan, ruins of former great Mayan cities in Central America and the setting of this fascinating work of historical fiction. It explores an exciting time period, full of myth, danger and upheaval, as the Mayans lose their dominance and the Aztecs begin to flourish. In the book, we follow the main character Tonina, a young woman who grew up on the islands but arrived as a baby with the dolphins from somewhere else, as she goes on a quest on the mainland not only to find a rare flower that is said to have healing powers but also to find her destiny. Along the way we meet a colorful cast of characters including a one eyed dwarf, a shape shifter, two famous ballplayers (one a spoiled Mayan prince, one a noble outsider), a 15 year old girl who looks like a grandmother, a woman trapped in an underground cave for over 20 years (thought to be the Earth Goddess) and many more. The story is engaging and the historical detail, mixed with a bit of mythical fantasy, really gives you a sense of what it might have been like to live in this far off time and place. You might have known that in the Mayan culture, death on the ball court meant ascending to 13th heaven and consorting with gods in the afterlife. But did you know that dwarves were sought after companions because they were thought to bring luck?
