If it is true that the end of Romanticism coincided with the invention of electric light, then we can date this to 1880 -- the year in which Thomas Alva Edison patented the light bulb. At around this time, a brilliant student at the Paris Conservatoire, Claude Debussy, decided to embark upon a composing career that would soon 'illuminate' the history of music.Debussy's output is roughly divided into three periods, each of which is represented by one of the three discs in this set. Focusing solely on his works for piano duo, the collection effectively represents a vantage point from which to analyse his stylistic development, since it touches on both Debussy's piano and orchestral writing simultaneously: as well as original keyboard works (Lindaraja is one example, the composer's first work inspired by Spain), there are piano pieces arranged for orchestra, vice-versa compositions (Prélude a l'apres-midi d'un faune, for instance) and music that was clearly intended for the orchestra or for specific ensembles (one example is Le triomphe de Bacchus, for which the orchestration was never completed).Performing these works are two of Italy's most celebrated pianists, Massimiliano Damerini and Marco Rapetti. Vivaldi was not the only composer to write for the talented girls and women of the Ospedale della Pieta, the convent school in Venice which was apparently full of young musicians trained in vocal and instrumental virtuosity sufficient to tackle virtuoso sonatas and concertos. Nicola Porpora was born in Naples, and is known as a distinguished alumnus of the more operatically inclined Neapolitan school of composers such as Alessandro Scarlatti and Pergolesi.Porpora worked off and on in Venice, and in 1742 became chorus master at the Ospedale della Piet?, and then from 1744 to 1747 worked in the same role at the Ospedale dei Poveri Derelitti run by the parish of S. Giovanni e Paolo. Most of the works on this CD ? some of them recorded for the first time ? date from this latter period. The choir was apparently in a parlous state when Porpora took it over, but he turned things around within fairly short order through rigorous daily rehearsals: as Porpora himself wrote on 4 January 1745, "To form a good choir calls for many things, the most important of which I shall describe here. [?] resonant voices possessed by girls who are determined, ready to work hard, and skilled as instrumentalists."The works here are multi-movement settings of psalms and other sacred texts, alternating arias and choruses, solo and ripieno texts, mostly lively in character except where pathos is called for in penitential texts. It makes a fine complement to the recent disc of secular cantatas on Brilliant Classics (BC94311) and is performed with native style by a historically ensemble based in Vicenza, just 60km from La Serenissma itself. He held several important posts, notably in Dresden, London (where he was Handel?s rival) and Venice. It is surprising that so little is known about Marin Marais today, as he could be considered one of the most important French composers of the Baroque period. Born in 1656, the son of a shoemaker, Marais spent his entire life in Paris. His musical career began when he joined the choir of the Sainte-Chapelle, but when his voice broken he decided to learn the viol, studying with the renowned bass viol player Sainte-Colombe, who had a profound influence on the young Marais. Marais went on to enter the royal orchestra and the orchestra of the Académie Royale de musique, where he performed and studied composing under Jean-Baptiste Lully. He was hailed as the greatest bass viol player of his time, and is said to have played the viol 'like an angel'.Marais's vast output for the viol (over 800 pieces!) is astonishingly varied, original and affecting ? no other composer has written so many works of such high quality for the instrument. The fifth and final book of Pieces de viole showcases Marais's art at its most mature and sophisticated, and includes a wider range of musical forms and techniques than the previous four books. Paganini composed 6 numbered concertos; the 6th of 1815 actually pre-dates No.1, which appeared in 1817. The Second concerto became one of his most famous works, and one he performed most frequently. The famous finale known as 'la Campanella' became an instant hit from the premiere in Naples in 1827. Later that year Pope Leo XII created Paganini a Knight of the Golden Spur, and his international stardom continued. His playing unsettled and astonished Liszt that he retreated to his hotel room for two weeks and seriously doubted if he could become as good a pianist as Paganini was violinist. Schumann claimed that it was hearing Paganini play that jolted him out of his chosen career as a man of letters to become a composer. Paganini encouraged the stories that he had sold his soul to the devil in order to play so fantastically -- such spin and hype was good for the box office. It did however result in the church refusing him burial in consecrated ground. Franz Liszt wrote an intensely personal and moving obituary when Paganini died in 1840. The Fifth concerto is from 1830, and for many years was un-performable as all Paganini left was the solo part and some vague ideas as to scoring. It was reconstructed and scored by Frederico Mompellio who also scored the Sixth concerto in the 1970s from the violin and guitar reduction that had survived. The Fifth contains all the pyrotechnics expected of a concerto by Paganini, but the slow movement is an especially moving and unadorned Andante. Paganini refused to publish any of his concertos, thus preserving control over them at a time when there was no copyright law.
